    4:46 Very simple technical explanation. This game, just like Mario 3, uses a special chip which gives the game the ability to scroll horizontally and vertically at the same time. Due to the way the hardware is designed, it can't load the color palette for the next screen for both directions at the same time off-screen, so one of them is displayed on-screen.

    • @mario64remix

      You don't see it? It might not have been noticable back in the day on old TVs since they would have cut if off, but it certainly is now. I actually really like it, gives the game that typical NES look.

    • @mario64remix
      @mario64remix 8 років тому +15

      Also note that on Mario 3, it actually happens at the right side of the screen, but in this video the graphic to indicate it stays on the left.

    The bar on the side of the screen is an artifact of the NES' when the screen could scroll on both the X and Y plane. Normally it was hidden by CRTs' cutoff edges, but modern displays show the flaw.

      Actually, I think it has something to do with special hardware instead that allows the HUD bar to be rendered at the bottom of the screen; the same issue appears (more famously, in my opinion) in Super Mario Bros. 3, which I believe DID use special hardware for the HUD.

    "I don't understand why Meta Knight is on the cover of Nightmare in Dreamland when he plays such a little role in the actual game."
    Probably because there is a complete new mode, Meta Knightmare, which sees the player play the entire game again, but as Meta Knight.

      @@Mqstodon he isn't important. He's like a bonus character if anything. This would be like mario 64 having Yoshi on the cover art because when you 100% complete the game you can finally meet him ontop of peachs castle. So people would have to spend the entire game wondering where yoshi is until the very very end lol. Would have been better with King DeDeDe in the background on the cover. Mike Abbo
      don't see why the game needs to be compared to similar titles of its age. I was of the impression that this video series is to judge if the original game has aged well and if the remake addresses the issues the original game has.
      Addressing issues like the different float, ability mechanics, or ability aesthetics for instance seem very relevant especially for players unaware with the games in question considering the way the video is structured.

    • @Brutalmoon
      @Brutalmoon 8 років тому +37

      Not really. They're different styles
      Adventure - Nightmare in Dreamland - Amazing Mirror - Squeak Squad are fast paced and the abilities feel more unique.
      SuperStar (Ultra) - Return to Dreamland - Triple Deluxe - Planet Robobot are slower and is more about picking a favorite ability, and the levels are more gimmicky.
      Dreamland Series - Kirby 64 are unique titles that have a different approach in terms of direction and tone.
      I'd say that Nightmare in Dreamland, SuperStar Ultra and Kirby 64 are each "style"'s peak.

    • @JJ_TheGreat
      @JJ_TheGreat 5 років тому +7

      I totally agree, especially considering that the future games took inspiration from the past games, such as Kirby's Adventure. They had more time to evaluate themselves (as designers) and make some fixes in order to make the future games better. For that reason, I do not think it is fair to compare an older game with a more recent one in the same series.

      That's what this whole game was. Nintendo wanted to capitalize on the popularity of "Right Back At Ya!" and didn't want to take the time to design a new game from the ground up. The fact that they never mentioned this was a remake in any of the marketing was a little shady, too.

    I don't think losing your ability when hit is a bad thing at all, it just gives you extra incentive to not take hits since the game's pretty easy and you won't die often. It's like the sword beam in the 2D Zeldas.

    • @ZipplyZane
      @ZipplyZane 6 років тому +8

      I was with you until you mentioned the sword beam. I hated how easy it was to lose it in the original Zelda. It made a huge difference whether you had it or not. You didn't have any other sword move but the dinky little stab that I always found hard to use.
      Now, after you get to Link to the Past and beyond, the ability to hold out the sword and do the spinning slash are good enough that the sword beam isn't as important, so I don't mind there.
      Same with Kirby. He's got a lot of moves, so I don't mind that you use your copy ability with one hit. Especially since you always have a chance to grab it right back.

    I think the losing the ability when you get hit is not a negative. It means you have to be careful if you have an ability you like. Kirby is an easy game but having it does add a small level of tension to it. That you can't just completely turn your brain off and that messing up does have some consequences.

    I honestly don't really like how you constantly compare flaws from the NES game to the improvements made in future installments, as it's really not too fair. Comparing it to the Remake to see which version is better is perfectly fine, but it's not entirely fair when you complain about issues with Kirby's Adventure to the improvements made in Super Star or something. It's kinda like complaining about how Pokemon Green is significantly worse than Pokemon Moon, as it's kind of obvious that the newer games are technically more advanced and play smoother.

      Myzma After watching this, I agree. Nightmare in Dreamland is a remake of Adventure, not the sequels. Complaining that it’s not a complete overhaul that brings in every improvement from later games is missing the point. It did improve the controls, visuals, added new content, and if Exo treated this like his other critiques, this would be a replace. But he just got on this weird tick of “It’s too much like its source material! What is this, a remake?”

    • @ActingandGames
      @ActingandGames 5 років тому +2

      So if I was to, per say, explain how A Link to the Past improved a lot on the original Zelda formula that’d be a problem to you? Obviously most new games in a series improve upon the old ones (with some exceptions,) but it’s not fair to point out flaws from a past game even if it is fixed in a new installment? It doesn’t make sense to me. You can still point out flaws in old games in the series that may have been fixed later as is the point of game analysis/criticism.

    4:47 its a limitation of the nes. Every game that doesent have this, cant scroll in 2 directions at once. In mario bros 3 you can scroll up and right at the same time. Same with kirby. The nes didnt have enough ram to store the whole stage in vram, so the stage is loadet as soon as you scroll to it, but that interfears in the colour pallet so you get some artifacts.

    I really like the fact that the game has few moves per ability. It makes each one have its use and I often find myself struggling to keep the same ability for too long. Way more fun than how current Kirby is just waiting until you get sword and never changing it
    Losing an ability after getting hit is great too because you often will have to either adapt fighting styles mid boss fight, or risk more damage by chasing your ability. Again, way more interesting than wailing away with all of the I-frames that sword gives you

      honestly, i felt like exo was way too used to how the recent kirby games played, and that was a reason for his complaints on getting hit while attacking, because in adventure and nidl, the attacks come out a lot slower, so you cant rush as how you probably would in super star or rtdl.

    The GBA box art and the title is supposed to reflect the anime style of the companion anime show, Kirby:Right Back at Ya! Thats why Meta Knight is on the background. I like the way the box art always reminds me of the anime since have heard of it. The developers at Hal Laboratory had an option of making a totally new game, but to make a good one that coincided with the anime's release, the developers decided to do a GBA remake of Kirbys's Adventure because the GBA button layout would make the control game play of SNES Kirby games like Kirby Super Star complicated.

    Interestingly, Kirby was always pink and happy in Japan, as seen in the box art. White Kirby and angry-eyes Kirby were NA box art changes made probably because marketing thought pink and cute wouldn’t sell in NA as well as a gender-neutral color and “cool”.

    The "weird bar" on the left side of the screen is a feature of the NES's graphics processor that intentionally prevents pixels from being drawn to the leftmost 8 columns of pixels. This restricts the viewport by one "tile", thereby making it possible to do four-directional scrolling using only one of the four background segments. Suffice to say, it's available and employed for the purpose of saving video memory.

    Does anyone else find it odd how people are usually quick to point out that Kirby tends to be on the easier side of things, but then dismiss challenges in the games? For example, dropping your power up is not pointless in the original or the remake. Kirby tends to be easier so adding a challenge of having to re-obtain your ability adds difficulty to otherwise not so hard games. It encourages you to get good enough to avoid as many hits as you can. It feels great to make it through levels without losing your power.
    Also, I found the extra mode and Meta Knight mode of Nightmare to be decently challenging when I last played them. Only having 3 hits makes the game so much harder, and yet people don't seem to appreciate a legit challenge like that where you have to get good at the game but still love to bring up how "Kirby is easy". Sure, the original might have some more lag, but I found it to be a fair challenge in Nightmare. Also, the boss rush mode is a challenge as well. Do people not appreciate a legitimate challenge in Kirby at all? Maybe these two games' boss rushes go a bit too far, but people love Super Star's arena mode for instance.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 9 місяців тому +1

      It's just annoying and not particularly challenging outside of a singular secret where you have to take a hammer through a watersection. And VS boss, besides being way overdone, is very much tanked by Meta Knight existing. Even if he has any sort of rhyme or reason to what he does, then he leaves so little room for reaction that it may as well be entirely random. People say that Magetrio in Star Allies Soul Melter EX is poorly designed, but that fight actually has a method to the madness, while this fight is just balls.

      The Sleep ability forces you to stay still for a few seconds while Kirby goes to sleep.
      The "Wait" ability icon is used in the pause screen for a player if said player disconnects in multiplayer mid-stage.
      The "ファイヤー/Faiyā" ability icon goes completely unused. It appears to be a test icon.

    4:53: Megaman games will sometimes have artifacts like that as well. It's an artifact of how tiles work in the NES, and wasn't supposed to be visible, on a standard CRT they would be within the overscan area, which is not typically visible.

    There is another version of Kirby's Adventure to consider; the 3D Classic version for the 3DS. It rips the graphics directly from the NES game, but it puts all the background and foreground art and stuff on different layers, which you can view if you turn 3D on.
    And its GORGEOUS.The only other change I think they made is in the boss rush, where you get healed after defeating Heavy Mole, just in time for Meta Knight and Kind Dedede. Ignoring the GBA remake, I'd consider the 3D Classic version a Replace for the NES one.

    I just played through this one (NES version) and I know what you're talking about with the controls feeling unresponsive. What I think is going on is that Kirby has animations for the various things he does (jumping, landing, attacking, getting hurt etc.) that take up a certain number of frames, so he can't do something new until he's finished the animation for what he's currently doing. And the way the game seems to handle this when it comes to player inputs is very strict: if, for instance, you hit the attack button when Kirby's just landed and is still in the "landing" animation, the game will ignore the input, even if there's just a few frames left of that animation. This leads to a lot of situations where you take damage or fall in a hole and go "I swear I hit the button!" You have to get used to waiting to input the next thing you want Kirby to do till the moment after he's finished his previous animation, as opposed to the game just cancelling the previous animation for you or queuing the new action behind the current one.

    Kirby's Adventure NES was the first Kirby game I owned, though I had played Dream Land before. I always found it easier to play through the game without using any copy abilities since the suck ability mostly had longer range and a wider cone than most abilities, and pretty much got the job done no matter what you were up against. It did mean you had to wait for bosses and mini bosses to use certain attacks before you could damage them, but it was safer to keep your distance the rest of the time. I always found the beetle harder than the turtle for some reason. I think it was because the bugs you could suck up moved slower than the turtle's suckable, leaving you more open to an attack. I only ever used abilities in spots where I needed them to reach an item or button, but always grabbed the UFO because it was deliciously OP.

    Now catching up on these two kirby reviews, and I'm happy that you covered the remake and original game. I grew up with NIDL as a kid, not knowing it was even a remake to begin with, so when I played Kirby's Adventure on the Wii VC I had massive Deja Vu. After playing both versions for the past decade, I've leaned a bit more towards NES Adventure due to the art style and also the fact that I think Kirby and the Amazing Mirror was the better Kirby GBA game.
