...that and I like how the game is definitely more balanced to compensate for the overpowered stuff, while cackletta still somehow kept her difficulty spike
I think the reason they removed a lot of the unique Designs from the original is the same reason why they reused Dream Team and Paper Jam‘s artstyle: So they don‘t have to make new sprites when they can just reuse Sprites from the other Games and maybe recolor them at most. I remember hearing that the devs at AlphaDream were really burned out by the time they finished Dream Team which explains why they reused that exact style for Paper Jam and then the two Remakes (plus the fact they probably were already very low on budget when making both Paper Jam and the Remakes)
@@BiggestSniffto give you proper context, Alpha Dream had this big crunch problem when developing both Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team that lead in a fall in the morale, there's a video that explains that and maybe that's the reason in Paper Jam and subsequent games they re use so may assets
NOT TRUE! If you side by side compare the Toad sprites from Dream Team or Paper Jam to the Toad sprites from the remake, they are different! So they deliberately chose not to use original character designs for Toads and Koopas sadly
I’ve gone back and played both versions as a marathon for all games until Brothership comes out. I had more fun replaying the 3DS version in comparison to the GBA. The 3DS version just does more things that I liked better than the original. I do prefer the original’s difficulty though in terms of attacking and defending, but it’s not enough to have the edge on the remake for me. Going a bit off topic, but this marathon will also be the first time I’m playing and completing the og Bowser’s Inside Story, I’ve only played the remake beforehand because I didn’t own the original, the original is better not even a question. 60 fps, getting excellents feel more rewarding, and I do prefer the sprite work there.
This remake adds in the free ability to save at will and beefs up the experience to 60fps, while throwing in the additions made to the original's Japanese version, so aside from graphics that makes this the more definitive version of the game for me. As for the Bowser's Minions side game, it only interrupts the main game once and can more or less be ignored from then, as I don’t think losing 20 seconds makes the overall experience bad. Even then, I think if you want to play a minion tactic game, just play Bowser Jr's Journey on the BIS remake as it basically improves the prior game with some ability to actually strategise your team's positions prior to battle and it actually feels like a full game rather than the side quest.
I actually like the new QoL features added for the remake. The new sidegame doesnt hinder the overall experience; i just thought it was funny comparing it to the original’s sidegame
@@BiggestSniff The original’s side game shouldn’t really be a point towards the original since it was just a lazy reuse of the side game they just took from the previous Mario Advance games. It’s not GBA Superstar Saga’s own original thing.
Og advanced bros attacks were just so much more fun even if more broken imo. Also the pixel art looked better to me as well. Best artstyle direction in the series goes to brothership coming out though. Agree with the vid hard. The QOl like higher FPS isn't enough to make me like the remake more. Remake has the better final boss fight though.
I prefer the original over the remake for the reasons listed above but also and more importantly, cycling overworld abilities (which is just pure muscle memory at this point due to how many times I've played it) and the ability to swap the lead bro without the need to have an ability active is just plain fun.
remake is better, but the og still has a place. id rather the remake embraced all the designs from the og. they also added koopa robots whatever they are called and got rid of the mecha dogs. its weird choices like this that leave me scratching my head. were these changes needed? not really. do they impact the game enough to make it worse than the og? also not really. so why make these choices? just leaves you with smthn missing. also what they changed is that save blocks no longer have the locations named. if you save in specific spots it would list th area, and then the location in that area. they removed it. why did they do it? it has no influence overthe game whatsoever but it did add charm. but im not gonna be mad that its gone, im just lost as to why these changes were made. lots of people say some assets were changed to make it easier on the devs, but this is literally one sentence of a text you have to fill out anyways. literally copy and paste it. literally noone cares that its gone but why is it gone???
I havent played the remake but i cant get past the art style. i love the original game so much. its one of my favorite games of all time. The sprite art is also just legendary. I know it might be lost on some people but theres a reason flash animations like Super Mario Bros Z used these sprites as the baseline. they’re so expressive and detailed while still distinctly being sprite art. they arent huge sprites but they arent small. the sprite work of this game blew my mind as a child and to this day still impresses me.
The remake, definitely the remake. The original is not bad at all but the remake really smooths over all of its rough edges. Also I completely disagree about what you said with the games side mode. The gameplay is a bit basic but if you play it in short bursts, it’s fun enough and the writing is phenomenal. Also the Bowsers inside story remake isn’t bad at all. It’s unnecessary yes but it’s still a great game and even improves over the original in some aspects
The remake to BiS is a great game mainly because the original is very similar to it. Many, including myself, also appreciate the original's soundtrack. as for the new side modes, it just wasn't for me. however i do appreciate the extra story content added to them.
@@BiggestSniff I really like how the remake gave the dark star and dark fawful their own themes and both are excellent. Using tough guy alert in the original for both of those fights felt super wrong tonally
@@theghostwiththemost789 What I find funny is that they straight up forgot to change Dark Star X's battle theme. It's still tough guy alert like in the original.
I’m more a stickler for the unique aesthetic the original offers. I absolutely despise these remakes washing out animations and designs. And I fail to see how anything substantial is added for good Qol. M+L is a game about style and slapstick. The remake tones both of those things down, and makes the game feel like a spin-off of Dream Team.
the quality of life features are nice, but one weird quirk i didnt like was being unable to switch luigi in-front to cycle through the actions manually, but thats mostly because i prefer to have the map on the bottom at all times. as for that side mode, it just wasn;t for me, but i'm glad other people liked it
people dont play it because they dont really care for the gameplay. im not gonna hop onto zelda oot to play some platforming sidemode. even the og mario bros from the gba i never touched. maybe played it once. same for theminion quest. i like that the minion quest adds context and fills gaps but its not smthn i want to complete
Not only is the original coop, but it’s one of the only RPGs I know of that have coop multiplayer. Especially for turn based games, I feel like coop would be in every RPG like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Persona, just to name a few. But no.
Those don’t necessarily *need* co-op, since they are just “click and confirm” to attack, while rpg’s like undertale and mario-rpg’s are more interactive. the combination-attack nature of mario & luigi series seems more worthy of coop than the others
I'll just say this, the remake made Fire Bros a move I'd use regularly, idk why but it always felt too slow in the original, but the points you raised are really solid. The original's art direction was definitely one of the most unique and while I'll probably say the original still feels better in the general snappy controls, the remake really does a good job blending the original back inline with the rest of the series. On a kinda unrelated note though, I really wished Partners in Time got a similar treatment as its still an early DS game with a lot of potential if it were a bit more polished
I’m like, sorta glad partners in time was skipped cuz it was my nostalgia-favorite, so the blame of alphadreams downfall can rest solely on the BiS remake lol As for fire bros, i just miss mario spiking the ball 😭
I usually love remakes, but I vastly prefer the original here. The QOLs didn't really make the game more enjoyable to me, I couldn't remember any significant ways the gameplay was improved where the Zelda remasters had some "oh nice, they fixed this" moments. What they did to the Big Koopas was unforgivable, they used to be Lenny/Big the Cat characters, but in the remake, it's just a normal koopa that's been resized by dragging a corner in Paint. It's like watching Spongebob if it was remade in GoAnimate. If it was one or two characters, I could deal, but it's like at least half the cast looks worse, including the Mario Bros, so it reeked of cheapness or corporate whitewashing. It kind of shows Alphadream was in a dire situation at the time and remakes of proven gems seemed like a safe bet to stay afloat. As an artist myself, the original holds up really well. It has a strong color palette, uses the Twelve Principles of Animation, it's very readable as a game with higher contrasts. The art style and timing suit the comedic tone of the game and adds a bit of an exotic flare to the Bean Bean Kingdom so it's less of an extension to the Mushroom Kingdom.
I've played the original game first and then the remake when i hacked my 3ds.. i was actually surprised by how easy the remake is compared to the og. Bosses that i remember really struggling with, i now beat them in 3 hits. I like the fact that you can now save everywhere though.. Because I only have short periods of time to play so it's cool to have this option and the save books
The original. Enough said. The remake nerfed attacks and removed the unique toad and enemy designs. They now got the boring generic designs. Thank god brother ship will have unique NPCs.
The sprites alone make the original my preferred choice. I know the remake had a lot going for it and I do still like it but I gotta be honest wasn’t the biggest fan of the Dream Team sprites from the very beginning.
@@BiggestSniff For me it's 1. Superstar Saga 2. Bowser's Inside Story 3. Partners in Time 4. Paper Jam (believe it or not Dream Team has their own sprites that don't get reused which are the ones used in the overworld while the battle sprites are used entirely in Paper Jam and the remakes both in the overworld and battles) 5. Dream Team
fair ranking. i feel like putting the first three below the latter two is wrong haha. i look upon paper jam and dream team with equal disdain. dream team for feeling like a recycled BiS, and paper jam for "oh shit, its paper mario!" without substance
@@BiggestSniff I can see that. Funnily enough this is also my ranking of my favorite to least favorite as well which is honestly very funny but it definitely isn’t because of the sprites I just didn’t like the newer titles nearly as much. Still great games though.
The remake is for the QoL and fixes, the original is for aestetics. Gameplay can go either way depending on the player, they are just diffrent in that regard. Not interms of balancing tho, those supposed diffrences that some people mention were actually from the japanese release of the original and they barely tweaked any of the values for the remake(In contrast to BiS where as far as anyone can see, the remake is the originator of its balance changes. RIP original challenge medal btw.)
You make a good point about the enemy designs, didn't actually notice that weird inconsistency. I actually do prefer 3DS version though, I was surprised that I did, I just found it more fun and I think the new soundtrack is dope too.
One thing i relly didnt like about the gba version was that you constantly had to change the leading bro for some actions, in the remake they moved all actions to the bottom screen and made the l and r buttons instantly change the leading bro for the action Thats why i like the remake more
Valid point. I actually had the opposite problem; I prefer the bottom screen to be the map, so not being able to switch the leading bro in the remake makes it more tedious
I really wanted to try the 3DS version but the change in artstyle is a big deal breaker. The original looks so lovely. The shaded style may look good in Dream Team but the original is unbeatable.
this an amazing video boss 🙏🙏 keep up the good work, i thoroughly enjoyed it and have only played the remake so i was wondering what others opinions on it were 🙏
Whats your opinion on the music? Personally i think the og is better, the remake sounds too "synthy" and artificial, loses the feel of the original. But yeah, overall id say remake is better. Visuals are beautiful and difficulty is more balanced. Def better than whatever the BiS remake is supposed to be lol
I’m a sucker for those GBA-condensed horns akin to tracks you’d hear from ruby and sapphire, so i’d say overall i also prefer the original’s soundtrack. However some new tracks really surprised me, notably teehee valley. The new visuals are very impressive, but also very different, to the point where its just a different visual experience that, while good, doesn’t invalidate the original in my opinion.
I would say both are on par with each other. The remake optimizes everything and refines the gameplay and I would consider it to be the best game in the 3DS art style. I would say that it’s technically better in every way minus the nostalgia points. I know it’s a tired and weak argument to say that a remake doesn’t quite hit as hard as the nostalgia does but in this case I think it’s a valid point because the original was so iconic. Bowser’s Inside Story and its remake are a completely different scenario since I would argue the original is far superior in nearly every way.
an interesting part about the original vs the remake, is, specifically because Knockback bros's infinite was for good reason, nerfed, and due to Roy+Wendy+Larry all having time Bombs+bosses havin some increased stats in the remake(due to the bros being able to Double Jump for Jump attack), the og+remake effectively makes a Low-Level no gear, no bros attacks, no Items Challenge, called "Nerve Mode" completely Impossible late-game, as you cannot beat those 3 bosses or even Bowletta+Cackletta Soul w/o the og's Knockback Bros Infinite. and in the remake, would be forced to used the overpowered Mushroom Badges. granted, everything before that point can absolutely be beaten w/these restrictions in both games no problem. its because of the Knockback bros nerf this challenge becomes completely impossible in the remake, whereas the og is forced to use the Infinite Knockback Bros to win the good part is at least roy's Fire Ball was fixed in da remake, cuz in da og due to some sorta oversight, it was bugged to be always guaranteed to hit Mario no matter what if he fired at him. I think both versions are good but the og at least, due to Infinite Knockback/Chopper Bros, allows you to do low level no gear challenges, which makes it only technically better
da interestin part bout dis challenge is the only one thats completely legit possible is Bowser's inside Story on DS/3ds w/Jump/Hammer/Punch/Fire Breath only, only Stache/Horn on Level Up(must get +3 or its a reset) for DS, Challenge medal on(obtained after Scutlet) ect. and this's legit all w/only +1 level per "area arc" ie if it Bowser's turn in story he gets +1 level, if it da bros, they get +1 level. the best part bout dese runs is it really makes you see how some bosses that were easy due to gear/bros items ect actually are extremely difficult. Dark Star for example is the hardest boss in DS BIS cuz of da 4 color orb attack being actually almost unavoidable if its top to bottom and 4 of the same color orb. da bros must be at exactly level 35 to win, cuz Mario out speeds at dat exact level. which means he gets 1 extra turn in da Dark Star's vulnerable cycle. Excellent+POW Badge 2x damage effect is required too. Partners in time nerve mode requires bros items cuz Elder Shrooboid has an unavoidable spin to win attack even tho it can be stopped. hence why its a whole rng fight. and Elder Princess Shroob's 2nd phase is a time limit cuz of her leg sweep attack. the min level for this nerve mode challenge's exactly 23 cuz of how da damage/level scaling works in dat game. I deff think Partners in time can be beaten w/o bros items but unless someone can figure out how to consistently stop Elder Shrooboid's unavoidable attack, thats basically impossible I deff recommend tryin these if possible. it really changes your perspective on some of da bosses
Nostalgia aside, the GBA version simply looks superior. The 3D artwork just doesn't carry the same charm as the 2D versions. It's Pokemon all over again; the games looked WAY better when it was 2D sprites vs the 3D models. I'm so tired of remakes trying to give everything this 3D look. It doesn't look good. Stop doing it.
Here comes my long views about the SS remake and on Minion Quest (hope it's understandable): For me, my memory of playing the original SS was short, was able to get to the second area of the game and died and for some reason I couldn't save (don't know if it was my DS being incompatible with the GBA cartridge or something else). For battles, it can be seen in a rough state but this was the first game of the series though. I remembered that the only way to know the timing and button presses of the Bros Attack in that version was to spend more BP to the prompts for less damage. Then from what another gamer told me is that the original game doesn't tell you what are the right button prompts to do the advance version of the attack. The remake essentially standardizes battles to the post-BIS style of battling regarding Jumps, Hammers, and Special Moves. I only know how the original one plays out because of a let's play. I also can't tell if the Bros Attacks was "slower" in the remake compared to the original. For overworld explanation, the remake added bit more items to find but aside from a few changes everything is the same. For the artstyle, I feel that I like the remake's style a bit more than the original one, possibly for the small additions like the shoe imprints on the sand and the "dark" effect in certain areas like in caves, Joke's End, and Bowser's Castle. For character design, also for the latter but sometimes it depends though. While some Beanbean versions of classic Mario enemies are now updated to be like the modern designs, some like Dry Bones and "Beanerang" Bros still had their old design. And many returning characters in the SMRPG remake also uses the modern design as well. For the Toads in SS, maybe their body shape could be standardized but the colors and clothing should still be kept the same since Toads in SMRPG remake still kept those unique clothing and colors amongst others. For Minion Quest, there were many improvements that Jr.'s Journey had compared to the former, but there were things that I liked in MQ. It depends on how you like the story of MQ and the connections it makes for the main mode, but I liked Captain Goomba's desire to save Bowser in a sense of a being a true loyal minion that is sometimes shown as a kind of (in my mind) "love" towards him. For the gameplay side, one mechanic removed in Journey was the Team Skill combos where if you have certain units in your team, such as all units of the Melee class, you get bonus stats for a level. I understand that many of them feels not useful for many levels (one combo was having six Spinies and one Lakitu, can be useful if most enemies were mostly Ranged but your units needs to be close to the recommended level of a certain stage/level), but in Jrs Journey I feel the special units limited to being one like the Elite Trio or the Koopalings (that are not co-captains) feel "weaker" compared to just using multiple copies of the same normal enemy, mainly in regards to their special skill and sometimes on their stats. Another thing that was removed was the "Captain" Levels where you only use the captain for the entire stage and have to be smart with using their Captain Commands. There were a few levels like that in Jrs Journey, but it would've been better if Jr. could have many levels that involve around switching his typings, using the Captain Commands in a certain time, and/or be accompanied by a specific Koopaling or Kamek with their commands as well. And another thing I hear nobody talk about is the usage of amiibo in this game. You can use them in Castle Town after beating Queen Bean if I remember. If you use Mario series amiibo, you can get the four types of beans in the game early for each compatible amiibo. I remember doing that and by the time the cafe was opened, I was able to get all of Egad's special items in one setting. If you use amiibo in MQ, you can get gold versions of Cp. Goomba, Boo, and Koopa (sorry Shy Guy) and unlock their special Captain levels (can't remember if the gold captains had different stats or level-up moveset compared to the original ones). Additionally, if you have certain units in your party in MQ, use a Goomba, Boo, or Koopa amiibo to scan them, then scan it back in Castle Town for the main mode, you can get really good items and equippable gear for the Bros. I used amiibo a lot while playing the game and I loved the rewards but I can very much understand how much it causes the game to be "different" compared to a playthrough where you don't use amiibo. I wish there were more guides/wikis that explain more about how using amiibo works for SS remake since there's not much info about them. I'm busy with other things to help out with the amiibo explanation, but if anyone has the game and the amiibos, can you please help out too? That's everything I have to say about the SS remake. If there's a video talking about a "definitive" way of playing BIS, I might come to give my thoughts about it too.
I completely forgot to mention the smrpg remake choosing to keep the original designs; that’s an excellent point. As for the amiibo functionality, the items you get are definitely cool, but that’s about all i can say about it. The slowed down attacks definitely didnt help me understand bros moves in the original, too 😅
1:14 I think the Bowser's Inside Story remake is better than the Superstar Saga one for having less questionable character design changes. Plus, Bowser Jr.'s Journey is more fleshed out compared to Minion Quest.
i hear ya, and in those departments i'd agree. but the slower framerate and questionable music changes make it a downgrade for me personally. otherwise the games are basically identical
I remember thinking I lost the remake at my aunt’s house when I was leaving as a kid, and my mother didn’t believe me, and that was the last time I played the remake.
@@BiggestSniff A one of recolor of a character whom themselves doesn’t have a unique design. Their existence just brings up eyebrow questions like “Why is there a Magikoopa in Little Fungi Town?” “And why are they named Psycho Kamek? Kamek is a singular character, not a species. Are there other Kamek variants that are separate from the original Kamek” ofc this is all disregarding the localization which I guarantee you, only a niche subsection of an already niche section of the fanbase will know about. I just think over all Toadley is just better 😅 (I do like Psycho Kamek’s design tho)
I personally say both are subjective to their time periods for being definitive. Take the gba release: it was peaked for it's time, and it's portability helped it gain sales (most likely.). The 3ds version was the definitive edition for it's time. It ad better graphics, a different charm to it, and so on. ALSO I LIKED MINION QUEST
The GBA one is easily superior-it simply oozes charm. The 3DS remake's art style is terrible, and it makes a number of weird choices like homogenizing the enemies for no real reason, also now Luigi can't be in front anymore? The animations are additionally whitewashed to be more generic and toned-down. The extra game mode is also completely throwaway. It's the original by a mile for me.
I find that I prefer the artstyle and sound design of the original game but what breaks it for me is how hard it is to defend against attacks. Many enemies' hitboxes are bigger than they look and especially hammering things has a massive learning curve because of how quickly it drops on you on gba. Didn't help that the last time i revisited the game was in a randomizer with custom shuffled enemy formations, which made the start of the game way harder than it was supposed to be, haha. 😅 Also went back to the remake recently but I find these games I've played half a dozen times aren't as exciting anymore. Definitely super hype about Brothership!!!
For what it’s worth, I don’t really have a preference between the two versions of the game. The remake has an arguably better art-style and fixes some of the problems with the original game. But on the other hand, the original version has vastly superior sound design which enhances the game’s overall comedic charm due to how whacky and surprisingly memorable the OG’s sound effects are. In fact, the recycled voice clips actually kinda clash with the remake’s new sound effects and remixed music. It’s my only complaint with the remake if I’m being honest, but it was enough to stop from enjoying it as much as the original version. That’s not I dislike the remake, but it’s kinda the main reason why I can’t say which version is my preferred one.
The only one I've played is GBA version through the GBA app on the Switch Online Expansion Pack services, and I actually do prefer the pixel art on the GBA version over the art style of the 3DS remake
Honestly, Alphadream should've only done this remake since the original can't be played on the 3ds but the original bowser's inside story CAN be so the remake feels pointless especially when the switch was coming up. Also the graphic changes while some are cool is sadly during the era where 'creative' characters weren't allowed for Mario rpgs which makes me really happy that they aren't following that for the remakes of Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario TTYD and hoping it doesn't go back to that. If Brotherhood becomes peak that even without Alphadream, it would mean more new adventures and the only one I feel could use a switch remake as it's only one 'good' one for me of the 3ds entries is Dream Team since there are some creative things there that would feel better with some refinement to the graphics and overworld traversal considering that and Paper Jam (really needs a lot fixed there and some time to pass) have really BIG overworld maps that have just too much empty space with only PJ having some fix for that being a dash mechanic.
I am worried about another dream team situation, where they just keep reusing the same engine, to the point it gets stale, but its unlikely. As for the BiS remake, it 100% shoulda been on switch, but alpha probably had nowhere near the budget
Both art styles are good. But the GBA version is one of the most graphically impressive games of its system, the best looking GBA RPG and in some aspects the best looking GBA game full stop. Meanwhile, the 3DS one just hits par for its system. Its good, its great, but its not topping a best looking 3DS games list.
First of all, that isn’t even true because the remakes have purely 2D sprite visuals with 2D character sprites with 2D sprite environments whereas Dream Team and Paper Jam had 2D character sprites mixed with 3D modeled environments and second of all, they were all released on the same fucking system, what did you expect? What are you gonna criticize Kirby Planet Robobot and the Pokémon 3DS games after X/Y for having the same artstyles from previous 3DS releases?
My problem with the remake is the 3D characters on a 2D plain. Dream Team and Paper Jam have full 3D modeled areas and the camera moves around a lot during cutscenes, but the camera stays at the same angle like the original. The camera definitely works to replicate the original, but 3D models on 2D art just feels really weird and I dunno how to describe it. Also, being a Bowsers inside story fan and playing through Dream Team for the first time in a decade, I hate the pacing in Dream Team so much. The story is drastically long to go through and all the attacks are extremely slow compared to the three games before it. I mention this because this remake suffers the same problems as dream team, except you can speed the story up, yet the attacks take way too long to finish, like at 4:42 That’s my rant, anyways you’re criminally underrated because your editing and commentary just screams 10K at the very least, hope you get them subs fast 😭
I never even thought about the 2d/3d perspective thing, you’re insanely right. Idk why but i think i dislike dream team more than paper jam, and i didnt even finish either lmao In my colorblind gaming video i mention how the newer colors straightup prohibited me from finishing the bye bye canon attack 🤣 And yea, those luiginary gyro attacks killed the game for me. And you’re too kind 😭
Could you elaborate what you mean by 3D characters? IIRC the only 3D character in this game is Cackletta's Soul. PJ and DT had way more 3D characters than this game
I haven’t played the remake much but it’s partially because, honestly I just do not like how the remake looks in terms of style compared to the original. It’s a good style don’t get me wrong but I vastly prefer the style of the original even if the game itself has some rough edges. Even the designs that they kept the same just look odd in the remake.
Honestly you can’t say that the bipedal design is worse strictly because of your head canon. The new game is much better to play and 90% of your complaints are small nitpicks with the only real valid complaint being to hit noise being worse as that actively impacts the feeling you get from gameplay. The remake is much better than the original in almost every way and that’s a fact.
I will never understand how people prefer the OG over the remake. The orignal hasn't aged too well in my opinion. Visuals and controls were so much better on 3DS. Still enjoyed the video though.
@BiggestSniff nah you definitely hit on a few good points outside of nostalgia. I also have a soft spot for the 3DS M&L games so my opinion isn't completely impartial either lol
@@BiggestSniff Except they didn’t. Dream Team and Paper Jam used 3D modeled environments for its areas whereas the SS and BiS remakes use painted 2D sprite backgrounds.
I like the remake more only because of the better maps and 60fps looks so buttery smooth
for sure,! i don't hate the remake lol
My brother in christ the gba version runs at 60fps. 🤡
be nice or i’ll kiss💋
...that and I like how the game is definitely more balanced to compensate for the overpowered stuff, while cackletta still somehow kept her difficulty spike
Wish they were treated with the same respect as intelligent systems, but they didn’t have something like fire emblem to fallback on

I believe it. Its pretty evident too unfortunately
NOT TRUE! If you side by side compare the Toad sprites from Dream Team or Paper Jam to the Toad sprites from the remake, they are different! So they deliberately chose not to use original character designs for Toads and Koopas sadly

I prefer the original over the remake for the reasons listed above but also and more importantly, cycling overworld abilities (which is just pure muscle memory at this point due to how many times I've played it) and the ability to swap the lead bro without the need to have an ability active is just plain fun.
^ this 100%
remake is better, but the og still has a place. id rather the remake embraced all the designs from the og.
they also added koopa robots whatever they are called and got rid of the mecha dogs. its weird choices like this that leave me scratching my head.
were these changes needed? not really. do they impact the game enough to make it worse than the og? also not really. so why make these choices?
just leaves you with smthn missing.
also what they changed is that save blocks no longer have the locations named. if you save in specific spots it would list th area, and then the location in that area. they removed it. why did they do it? it has no influence overthe game whatsoever but it did add charm. but im not gonna be mad that its gone, im just lost as to why these changes were made.
lots of people say some assets were changed to make it easier on the devs, but this is literally one sentence of a text you have to fill out anyways. literally copy and paste it.
literally noone cares that its gone but why is it gone???
I havent played the remake but i cant get past the art style. i love the original game so much. its one of my favorite games of all time. The sprite art is also just legendary. I know it might be lost on some people but theres a reason flash animations like Super Mario Bros Z used these sprites as the baseline. they’re so expressive and detailed while still distinctly being sprite art. they arent huge sprites but they arent small. the sprite work of this game blew my mind as a child and to this day still impresses me.
I have a feeling most will recognize the sprites from that flash series first 😅
The remake, definitely the remake.
@@lpfan4491I think the reason why they did that is because the Dark Star’s theme would sound out of place in a battle arena.
@@Masked_Mastermind I doubt it. Antasma's theme in Dream Team does not fit in a bossrush either and Antasma X kept it regardless.
I think it has more charm than dream team, but i’m also overally critical of dream team
The 3DS version fixes so much things. And a lot of extra things are added. And Bowser’s Minions IS A GOOD MODE. PEOPLE JUST SUCK AT IT
the quality of life features are nice, but one weird quirk i didnt like was being unable to switch luigi in-front to cycle through the actions manually, but thats mostly because i prefer to have the map on the bottom at all times.
as for that side mode, it just wasn;t for me, but i'm glad other people liked it
people dont play it because they dont really care for the gameplay. im not gonna hop onto zelda oot to play some platforming sidemode.
even the og mario bros from the gba i never touched. maybe played it once. same for theminion quest.
i like that the minion quest adds context and fills gaps but its not smthn i want to complete
The remake replaced the Koopas in flight suits with generic ones and the unique Toads with generic ones. That's a downside
I’m like, sorta glad partners in time was skipped cuz it was my nostalgia-favorite, so the blame of alphadreams downfall can rest solely on the BiS remake lol
As for fire bros, i just miss mario spiking the ball 😭
@@BiggestSniff He still spikes the ball in the remake as a part of the Advanced Fire Bros move.
Art style aside the remake fixes so many issues with the original. All the quality of life improvements are a blessing
Some are, some were unnecessary. Both are equally good experiences.
❤️ its nice to feel justified for not liking some of the new designs by an artist, thank you 😅🤘🏼
@@BiggestSniff You’re not even remotely in the minority with your take.
Too be fair I only played 3ds superstar saga. So I can’t really say anything about the original.
unfortunately i'm old enough to remember 😂
I've played the original game first and then the remake when i hacked my 3ds.. i was actually surprised by how easy the remake is compared to the og.
Bosses that i remember really struggling with, i now beat them in 3 hits.
I like the fact that you can now save everywhere though.. Because I only have short periods of time to play so it's cool to have this option and the save books
There’s enough pros and cons to warrant playing either, for sure
The original. Enough said.
The remake nerfed attacks and removed the unique toad and enemy designs. They now got the boring generic designs.
Thank god brother ship will have unique NPCs.

The sprites alone make the original my preferred choice. I know the remake had a lot going for it and I do still like it but I gotta be honest wasn’t the biggest fan of the Dream Team sprites from the very beginning.
Its so bizarre that i feel somewhat alone in that exact opinion lol
@@BiggestSniff For me it's
1. Superstar Saga
2. Bowser's Inside Story
3. Partners in Time
4. Paper Jam (believe it or not Dream Team has their own sprites that don't get reused which are the ones used in the overworld while the battle sprites are used entirely in Paper Jam and the remakes both in the overworld and battles)
5. Dream Team
fair ranking. i feel like putting the first three below the latter two is wrong haha. i look upon paper jam and dream team with equal disdain. dream team for feeling like a recycled BiS, and paper jam for "oh shit, its paper mario!" without substance
@@BiggestSniff I can see that. Funnily enough this is also my ranking of my favorite to least favorite as well which is honestly very funny but it definitely isn’t because of the sprites I just didn’t like the newer titles nearly as much. Still great games though.

i can’t believe i forgot about NSO 😅
The remake is for the QoL and fixes, the original is for aestetics. Gameplay can go either way depending on the player, they are just diffrent in that regard. Not interms of balancing tho, those supposed diffrences that some people mention were actually from the japanese release of the original and they barely tweaked any of the values for the remake(In contrast to BiS where as far as anyone can see, the remake is the originator of its balance changes. RIP original challenge medal btw.)
Yeah, both are very different in the gameplay department.
Hard mode would have been nice too 😅
You make a good point about the enemy designs, didn't actually notice that weird inconsistency. I actually do prefer 3DS version though, I was surprised that I did, I just found it more fun and I think the new soundtrack is dope too.
We like em both, here 👌
One thing i relly didnt like about the gba version was that you constantly had to change the leading bro for some actions, in the remake they moved all actions to the bottom screen and made the l and r buttons instantly change the leading bro for the action
Thats why i like the remake more
Valid point. I actually had the opposite problem; I prefer the bottom screen to be the map, so not being able to switch the leading bro in the remake makes it more tedious
@@BiggestSniff You can switch the bottom screen to the map, Bruh.
I really wanted to try the 3DS version but the change in artstyle is a big deal breaker. The original looks so lovely. The shaded style may look good in Dream Team but the original is unbeatable.
Isn’t it charming?
Removing the flight suits from the Koopas killed the charm the remake could have had
DAMN! Forgot about that 😅
this an amazing video boss 🙏🙏 keep up the good work, i thoroughly enjoyed it and have only played the remake so i was wondering what others opinions on it were 🙏
Thank you ❤️🙏🏻
Whats your opinion on the music?
Bowser’s Inside Story and its remake are a completely different scenario since I would argue the original is far superior in nearly every way.
an interesting part about the original vs the remake, is,
specifically because Knockback bros's infinite was for good reason, nerfed, and due to Roy+Wendy+Larry all having time Bombs+bosses havin some increased stats in the remake(due to the bros being able to Double Jump for Jump attack),
the og+remake effectively makes a Low-Level no gear, no bros attacks, no Items Challenge, called "Nerve Mode"
completely Impossible late-game, as you cannot beat those 3 bosses or even Bowletta+Cackletta Soul w/o the og's Knockback Bros Infinite.
and in the remake, would be forced to used the overpowered Mushroom Badges.
granted, everything before that point can absolutely be beaten w/these restrictions in both games no problem.
its because of the Knockback bros nerf this challenge becomes completely impossible in the remake, whereas the og is forced to use the Infinite Knockback Bros to win
the good part is at least roy's Fire Ball was fixed in da remake,
cuz in da og due to some sorta oversight, it was bugged to be always guaranteed to hit Mario no matter what if he fired at him.
I think both versions are good
but the og at least, due to Infinite Knockback/Chopper Bros, allows you to do low level no gear challenges, which makes it only technically better
I would love to do a challenge run like that holy shit
da interestin part bout dis challenge is
the only one thats completely legit possible is Bowser's inside Story on DS/3ds w/Jump/Hammer/Punch/Fire Breath only, only Stache/Horn on Level Up(must get +3 or its a reset)
for DS, Challenge medal on(obtained after Scutlet) ect.
and this's legit all w/only +1 level per
"area arc" ie if it Bowser's turn in story he gets +1 level, if it da bros, they get +1 level.
the best part bout dese runs is it really makes you see how some bosses that were easy due to gear/bros items ect actually are extremely difficult.
I deff think Partners in time can be beaten w/o bros items
but unless someone can figure out how to consistently stop Elder Shrooboid's unavoidable attack,
thats basically impossible
I deff recommend tryin these if possible.
it really changes your perspective on some of da bosses
I liked the Advance moves being a selected choice. I actually like the Bowser's Minions side mode
I’d like to talk over coffee
@@BiggestSniff sounds like a plan👀
Nostalgia aside, the GBA version simply looks superior. The 3D artwork just doesn't carry the same charm as the 2D versions. It's Pokemon all over again; the games looked WAY better when it was 2D sprites vs the 3D models. I'm so tired of remakes trying to give everything this 3D look. It doesn't look good. Stop doing it.
It was fine for one game, but im excited we’re getting something new for brothership
Here comes my long views about the SS remake and on Minion Quest (hope it's understandable):
For me, my memory of playing the original SS was short, was able to get to the second area of the game and died and for some reason I couldn't save (don't know if it was my DS being incompatible with the GBA cartridge or something else).
The slowed down attacks definitely didnt help me understand bros moves in the original, too 😅
AMAZING VIDEO
That means a lot! Thank you :)
Obviously the Remake. Modernized Bowser’s Inside Story Gameplay, Lighting, and Better Graphics.

I remember thinking I lost the remake at my aunt’s house when I was leaving as a kid, and my mother didn’t believe me, and that was the last time I played the remake.
“As a kid”
I’m so old 😭
3:58 Dr Toadley at all I’d say is a net upgrade
I like toadley,
But PSYCHO KAMEK
@@BiggestSniff A one of recolor of a character whom themselves doesn’t have a unique design. Their existence just brings up eyebrow questions like “Why is there a Magikoopa in Little Fungi Town?” “And why are they named Psycho Kamek? Kamek is a singular character, not a species. Are there other Kamek variants that are separate from the original Kamek” ofc this is all disregarding the localization which I guarantee you, only a niche subsection of an already niche section of the fanbase will know about. I just think over all Toadley is just better 😅
(I do like Psycho Kamek’s design tho)
I like both but i definitely echo some of your sentiment
the original art style was so much better!
I believe The hammer timing changed starting with the third game, so it probably just carried over to the remake. I do prefer the original’s timing.
I prefer the sprites on the original (except for Bowser), but I prefer the gameplay on the remake.
valid af
For what it’s worth, I don’t really have a preference between the two versions of the game. The remake has an arguably better art-style and fixes some of the problems with the original game. But on the other hand, the original version has vastly superior sound design which enhances the game’s overall comedic charm due to how whacky and surprisingly memorable the OG’s sound effects are. In fact, the recycled voice clips actually kinda clash with the remake’s new sound effects and remixed music. It’s my only complaint with the remake if I’m being honest, but it was enough to stop from enjoying it as much as the original version. That’s not I dislike the remake, but it’s kinda the main reason why I can’t say which version is my preferred one.
the old game definitely had superior sound design
The only one I've played is GBA version through the GBA app on the Switch Online Expansion Pack services, and I actually do prefer the pixel art on the GBA version over the art style of the 3DS remake
Both are perfectly serviceable!
The original. The remake‘s character design just pisses me off. Especially the absence of fat Koopa and Bone Kong
I think they just wanted to reuse sprites they already made for dreamteam and paper jam 😭
Remake is only good because Swing Bros
Do you mean swing bros?
Both art styles are good.
But the GBA version is one of the most graphically impressive games of its system, the best looking GBA RPG and in some aspects the best looking GBA game full stop.
Meanwhile, the 3DS one just hits par for its system. Its good, its great, but its not topping a best looking 3DS games list.
agreed
My issue with every game post Dream Team is that they just reuse the art style. The remakes + paper jam lack a unique identity bc of that.
100%
The remakes have a distinct art style tho
it lacks an identity because it was used 4 times in-a-row, at least to some
@@BiggestSniff No, Dream Team and Paper mix 2D and 3D while the remakes are entirely 2D (except for Cackletta's Soul and giant battles)
You sir, have won the internet today!
Stop 🤭
My problem with the remake is the 3D characters on a 2D plain. Dream Team and Paper Jam have full 3D modeled areas and the camera moves around a lot during cutscenes, but the camera stays at the same angle like the original. The camera definitely works to replicate the original, but 3D models on 2D art just feels really weird and I dunno how to describe it.
Also, being a Bowsers inside story fan and playing through Dream Team for the first time in a decade, I hate the pacing in Dream Team so much. The story is drastically long to go through and all the attacks are extremely slow compared to the three games before it. I mention this because this remake suffers the same problems as dream team, except you can speed the story up, yet the attacks take way too long to finish, like at 4:42
That’s my rant, anyways you’re criminally underrated because your editing and commentary just screams 10K at the very least, hope you get them subs fast 😭
I never even thought about the 2d/3d perspective thing, you’re insanely right.
Idk why but i think i dislike dream team more than paper jam, and i didnt even finish either lmao
In my colorblind gaming video i mention how the newer colors straightup prohibited me from finishing the bye bye canon attack 🤣
And yea, those luiginary gyro attacks killed the game for me.
And you’re too kind 😭
the characters are still sprites though?
Could you elaborate what you mean by 3D characters? IIRC the only 3D character in this game is Cackletta's Soul. PJ and DT had way more 3D characters than this game
@@Faniwa828 guess it’s just an artstyle choice my eyes don’t agree with. idk.
