  • Every controller needs a game or two to help users get used to it. For Valve's eccentric piece of tech, I found three good ones.
    Don't worry, the Favorite Games Project is chugging right along. I'm almost done recording, and I'm a little more than halfway done writing. This stuff takes time. Hopefully this'll sate your appetite for now.

      Had it from 2017. Its a nice controller, you just gotta learn how to operate the controller and its software (Steam Big Picture).
      What I love about it tho is being able to download community's binding profiles for any game. And people also get creative by adding extra HUDS to a game, I remember trying a config for MW3 and you could open a HUD with the D-PAD

    A list of things:
    1. Congratulations to be humble enough to admit you were hasty with your judgement. My respects.
    2. Thank you for not taking the opportunity to take low blows at the Wii Remote. Games that implemented the Remote correctly were fantastic experiences: Galxies, Metroid, Zelda, etc.
    3. Thank you for bucking the negative trend of most gamers not wanting to adapt to a diffeernt control scheme. With practice you managed to adapt even playing 2D platformer with the left Trackpad.
    4. Nintendo and Valve are the 2 big companies that give a damn of moving videogame interfaces forward instd of taking the comformoist easy way out.

    • @mamuburaa
      @mamuburaa 6 років тому +2

      Duh. Adaptation is what games are all about. If you can't adapt, you will lose.
      Just like real life. Players that don't wanna adapt, like Dark Side Phil for example, are just spoilt.
      That's because - unlike in real life - you get to pick your games freely.

      I feel Nintendo has always been the company to step out of the comfort zone and try something new, even if it flops. *cough* the atrocious attempt at vr *cough* but the switch and all are very intuitive things that they've created. People make fun of them as a company but they don't realize that without stepping out of that comfort zone we wouldn't have had the nes, the Gameboy, etc. Which were all the original bases for later gaming consoles that people respect. It's ridiculous.

      Hell, I'd argue it equals one as it takes the principle of using a mouse and applies it to controllers.

    Took me about 5 minutes to get somewhat used to Left 4 Dead 2 with Gyro. Now a few games later, on Destiny 2 and it's perfect. Not sure why you're recommending these types of games, FPS and TPS games are what it truly excels at. Not at the level of mouse + keyboard, but still far beyond the level of dual analog. But it seems like you haven't even given it a shot for those games.

    Does anyone actually care about pirating games from 30 years ago that are hard to find and can cost a ton depending on the game?

    • @SherrifOfNottingham
      @SherrifOfNottingham 6 років тому +3

      Actually it's not illegal to download a pirated game, even a current one.
      What's illegal is when you're uploading the game... Which has a problem since most games are pirated via a torrent file, where as you download you also upload the game to other people at the same time, making you guilty.

      Steam Controller is a nice controller but bad they dont have 2 options... Left handed and right handed Thumb Sticks. Cause its left handed and playing with the Thumbstick on the right and having the keypad on the left it would be a AMAZING controller for right handed people, but now nah. I dont like it.
      It is usefull for game like Rocket Leaque where aiming is not a thing.

    With GYRO is simple enough and it's kind of fun to play CS GO, in casual deedtntach I easily get into the top 3 scoreboard players (I like to play with random weapons), however in the competitive mode the results are obviously worse than with the mouse. But as I said, for a casual game in CS GO, steam controller it's a real thing!

    As someone who pre-purchased the steam controller, I have used it in every game that I have felt the need to use a controller in, fighters, emulators, gta, helldivers, for honor, etc. The fact that every single input is rebindable down to even the trigger can have multiple inputs, ie in for honor to change the direction of the guard just touch that area of the right pad, to do an immediate counter for that side you would click it. It is definitely a great controller, sure the pad isn't as normal to use as a stick when it comes to shooters and whatnot but as with any game enough practice and you'll get used to it. The amount of things you can do with this controller are incredible, you can have it zoom in when holding the trigger slightly and using the pad to turn, then if you click the trigger in by pulling back all the way have it enable the gyroscope in the controller and use that as a gyro mouse for even more control, even in cod this helped gain a pretty significant advantage over controller players and almost kept up with mouse players, gaining the benefit of the aim assist and then the sensitivity of a mouse when needed. To this day I still don't use it when shooting people in gta if I can avoid it but that's just due to not spending a whole lot of time spent on shooters with it.

    I can't imagine gaming without the Steam controller now, that controller is really amazing. I also learned how to get used to it playing Portal, in my case Portal Stories Mel. The effectiveness of this controller depends on how fast you get used to it, and how much knowledge you have about its customization. If you don't like a controller mapping, you can download one from another user, and if you still don't like it, you can change it or create one from scratch and share it. If this controller doesn't work for you, it is because you don't understand how to use it, and that's fine for some people, but don't blame the device because of that

    An emulator, an FPS, and a controller friendly game are all you really need to master it.
    An emulator helps you learn how to rebind your buttons, an FPS acquaints you with the touch pads, and a controller friendly game helps you build confidence in the controller.

    There is so much to this controller and it's configuration and the tech in there is truly revolutionary in my opinion. Yes it takes time to get use but once u spend more time with it and configure the way you would like to play your games you will like this. I have to say that now after 3 months i prefer it better than my xbox one controller why more so barely any input latency. I figured and use other configuration on playing third party games. The steam controller is a learning curve and is 9nly getting better.

    About a week ago, I dislocated my kneecap, so I can't get to my computer easily. So I've been employing the use of the Steam Link and Steam controller, and I love it now. (I didn't before.) Portal 2 really helped me learn it, and one if my favorite thing about it is how you can really customize it any way you want. I have Stardew Valley working now, I setup Skyrim, Fallout 3 and NV to use Keybindings on it, just so I can use the gyroscope. The Steam controller is my favorite controller to use now.

    Thank you, excellent video. I just bought this controller and, never having owned a console and thus never gotten used to any other controller, it was a little frustrating just to get it to work properly with one game (Fallout 3). I do think that both touch pads, the gyro, and the configurability of this controller make it a timeless and almost universal device.

    • @SuperDQP
      @SuperDQP  7 років тому +1

      That's actually a really interesting perspective. How does this controller feel to someone who's never used a controller before? A big barrier to a lot of people for this controller is that they already have an idea of how a controller (already a pretty complex device to a gaming outsider) works, and they have a hard time adjusting. I wonder how someone who's never used a controller before would find this thing compared to, say, a PS4 controller or something.

    • @Gersberms
      @Gersberms 7 років тому +1

      I have tried handling a PS3 controller before, and a loooong time ago, I played Tomb Raider 1 with a PS1 controller. I completely forgot about that until now. All controllers until now seemed extremely un-ergonomic. The thumbstick and d-pad never seemed very usable to me because as a PC gamer you use your fingers which are more nimble if you ask me. The Steam Controller is awesome, I already like it better than the mouse knob and touchpad on my laptop. It will however probably never match a mouse for speed and accuracy. Comfort wise, it's better than using a keyboard. WASD seems a little awkward now.

    Portal 2 definitely is the best game to learn how to use the Steam Controller, but you can pick really any of Valve's FPS Games to start. With the right track pad for aiming, the left track pad for cycling weapons, gyro controls, and the paddle buttons on the back for mapping actions like jump and grab without taking your thumb off the pad, it was made for FPSes or any other games that require precision aiming. It's not Mouse and Keyboard precision, but if I don't feel like sitting at my desk and straining my wrists, it beats the shit out of a standard controller for those types of games. With using the left track pad as a D-Pad for 2D games though? I'll stick to a real D-Pad. It's like using a touch screen on a phone, which is totally playable, especially if you turn haptics on, but I wouldn't use it unless I absolutely had to. A great controller overall for certain games, but definitely not others.

  • @jbee02

    I like the steam controller its great for non first or third person shooters, and i love the two extra buttons on the back. I always map one of those as a push to talk button. But i actually prefer to use the switch pro controller ever since steam started supporting it. I map the video record button to a push to talk button, and steam supports gyro controls which us not as intuitive as a mouse and keyboard but its has just as much fidelity as a mouse and keyboard. Its definitely better than a steam controller for precision shooters.

    I picked the controller up, when it was on Sale for like 30€ and I'm mostly using it as a mouse for my Steam Link. (Desktop mode). And to be fair, it works pretty good for that purpose. But I think I will now test some games with it, even though I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the customization options. But as far as I can tell, I don't think the controller deserves all the negative reviews. I mean sure, it takes some time to get used to, but it's also fun to use and pretty well build. Especially for the price (when it's on sale!) The only annoying thing for me is the loud "click" sound of some buttons. But yeah, think think I will spend some more time with the controller now, thanks to your video :)

      Pyro is LITERALLY the only way you could possibly play competitively using a controller, even Medic isn't viable since you might need to switch to a weapon in case your partner dies or is too busy to defend you cuz HEAVY NEVER FUCKING TURNS AROUND TO SEE THE SPY!
      I can't even imagine Engineer being viable since you could need to use your shotgun at some point to ward off a Spy who's trying to sap your buildings...trust me, when you're panicking, trying to shoot, you'll be thankful for that mouse aim.

    Great vid. You really should try a racing game using the gyro. Takes a bit of fiddling, but it's as good as a wheel for things like DiRT Rally, which sucks to play on an analogue stick.

    I just got the controller a week ago & it's really hard to use for shooter games. I didn't try on multiplayer game. The 1st game I tried is Choice Chamber which is just side scrolling but I sometimes accidentally pressed the Y or B button when trying to press X or A button. Then, I tried Isaac Rebirth but I'm okay with shooting with the buttons but not the track pad. After that, I tried Enter The Gungeon which I test the controls in the tutorial but my aiming is way off. Finally, I tried Slime Rancher which I got the problem with rotating the screen (changed some bindings & settings but still hard to play).
    EDIT: After changing the settings a few times, it gets easier but still can't beat keyboard / mouse & keyboard. I really need to use mouse & keyboard for Enter The Gungeon

      @TheRibbonRed 6 років тому

      Dab510 Gungeon is really punishing. You almost have to use M+KB for that, though I’ve beaten one lucky run with good drops through the Steam Controller.
      The only type of games I found the controller feels like a limited control method is on competitive FPS. RTS, TBS, and many other games actually benefitted from the controller with its all-round on-the-fly customizability.

      Just so you know, the steam configurator has the option to toggle sensitivity with most buttons by doing “mode shift”. Just set your sensitivity low, and then make the mode shift profile make the sensitivity go higher, and apply the mode shift to whatever button you want (like a back paddle). Then you can have nice precise aiming by default, and you can hold a paddle to make the sensitivity go higher for quickly repositioning. This dramatically boosts how easy it is to aim.

    I just bought steam controller. I never had ANY controller in my hand before and I have no clue how they work and I have no previous habits because of that. My impressions are:
    - steam controller lays in hands pretty well, all buttons are easily accessible and pads are working well, they feel surprisingly natural
    - I naively thought that there are some standards to use controllers so I thought I jump right away to them and learn them quickly - nope, my first games are not controller optimized, they work for keyboard but their shortcuts are rich and... confusing as hell (almost not playable - Witcher 2) and that is why I bought controller, hoping it will help me to deal with those confusing controls,
    - I didn't expect there are sooooooo many options, that's scary but on other hand that's great because I can figure out how to map those pesky keyboard shortcuts if there is so many of them
    - community configurations help a lot but are not complete and I have to adjust them
    - if a game has rich keys shortcuts, I have to know them first to set up controller, if I don't have them, both keys and controller are not much helpful, so I figured, I have to go through tutorial, write down all keys on a piece of paper and then figure out what is the best way to put them on controller - lot of work and as stated previously, I hoped to jump right away to it.... but I have no choice, Witcher 2 is unplayable with keys, it has one of the most retarded keys controls ever!
    - still, despite all those hardships, steam controller is exciting, gives lot of options and once I master them, it's way easier to use them then keys, which I always hated, so I don't regret buying it
    - your video is great and gives lot of valid points, I started my adventure with steam controller really wrong, from not controller optimized, complicated titles, but I'm still invested to beat them anyway ;)
    - learning process is also part of fun ;)

    • @JohnSmith-mk8hz
      @JohnSmith-mk8hz 7 років тому

      Take the time to learn and get used to it. It's very unique and amazingly configurable to just about any task or game on computer. There are MANY user made configs on Steam for most games etc. so you don't have to worry about setting up everything yourself. Watch all the videos you can. In a way it's a somewhat complicated controller and I think that may be the main reason some people don't like it. But as this video shows, once you get used to it, you love it.

      I made my WItcher 2 work well with steam controller. It took me a whole day of playing around but after that, I really got to know the controller.
      I just asked myself: what are the most important shortcuts I must use on the fly during battle? Which ones can be chosen outside battle, when having time to consider it?
      This way I came to my configuration.
      - Right pad is mouse (camera) with Q (spell) on a click.
      -Left pad is a pad buttons for inventory, journal, character etc. But it also works as a pad scroll on inventory and shop lists!
      - joysitck is of course movement with block on click
      - pad buttons are shortcuts to 1,2,3,4 (swords, next spell and quick slot)
      - right forward button is left click when soft clicked, on full click it's space - which works well for rolling/evading in battle and also for quick looting - that's the best setting, I couldn't image it better
      - left forward button is of course right click or Q (again) on full trigger
      - right bumper is R for traps and whatnot
      - left bumper is for quick menu
      - under right push is Enter
      - under right push is Z (medallion)
      - button right of steam logo is esc
      - button left of steam logo is map
      - joystick is a secondary up/down button (triggered by left main forward button on soft click) which allows for easily browsing through dialogues and main game menus!
      I have some other secondary menus but they are not so important or often used.
      It works very well for me. I am very happy with quick looting and browsing lists on shops/inventory and through dialogs, because standard community settings mostly missed that or put on secondary, weird, un-intuitive places.

      I love more options so steam controller just wowed me, even when I was confused at first with so many options. I figured out a lot of them in last days. It's just impressive. I can adjust it to probably most keyboard games and it's so powerful. I doubt that other controllers can do as much stuff as this one.
      I am more of a power user (even not being too technical) so I just love lot options and that is why I run manjaro kde as my main system. Anyway, steam controller is just amazing.

    It's a great replacement for a mouse and keyboard for couch gaming. I've really never liked aiming with an analog stick. However, i REALLY don't like the left pad as a Dpad replacement. I want a Steam controller with a Dpad on the left

  • @GeorgeCowsert
    @GeorgeCowsert 6 років тому

    The best two pros of the steam controller are the track pads, and the customizable settings.
    The customizability is something more controllers need.
    I mean, I programmed my controller so that the paddle swapped my mouse sensitivity from high to low when in desktop mode (on day 1 I might add)
    You just don't see that in console controllers, because the developers don't ever think about their smarter customers.
    The track pads are infinitely better than analog sticks, solely because you don't sacrifice as much precision with them.

  • @DanielYoud86
    @DanielYoud86 7 років тому

    I've owned the Steam controller for about a year and not really used it much because I found it harder to use than my 360 controller for games which are better with a gamepad and near impossible to use on games that use mouse and keyboard.
    Two games I have used it on successfully was KSP which with it's default config works excellent on all aspects of the game and Elite Dangerous which works well.
    Unfortunately I tried playing FPS games on this and this is what killed it for me and it hasn't been used for a little while now, but I recently bought a Steam Link to take advantage of my TV downstairs and hopefully get back into using the Steam Controller again as I don't want it just collecting dust.
    Your video helps a lot and I think I'll fire up Portal 2 again but on my Steam Link this time and with the Steam Controller too see if I can really get used to this thing.

      That's 100% false. Give a standard controller to a non-gamer and they will not be comfortable with it at all. It's just the fact that you've been using the same type of controllers for years. No one was instantly fucking used to Dual Shock the moment it came out. Dual Analog didn't even become the FPS console standard until Halo. Use some common sense.

    So for the first year of living in my apartment I didn't have a desk, nor did I think I had room for one. My computer was attached to my TV, and I had no place for a keyboard and mouse. In consequence of that I played Overwatch with the Steam Controller for well over six months. It was certainly less than ideal . . . but not awful.
    Fair caveat here: I am not an overly competitive player, and even with keyboard and mouse I'm still in bronze. However, I was surprised at how accurate (and how comfortable) it could be to use a combination of gyro controls and trackpad. Trackpad for large movements, gyro for small, make sure the gyro is only active when your finger is on the trackpad, and then make sure none of the common functions are on the four letter buttons because you won't be reaching for those any time soon. Definitely not my preferred way to play a competitive FPS, but for a bit of casual play on the couch it was actually quite nice.
