      +Jack Plays Yes. I've been looking for reviews for weeks, it seems like most people just plugged it in and tried it on 1 or 2 games for 10 minutes. Hopefully more reviews by people that have actually used the damn thing start showing up.

    If folks are still new to this vid, I also just wanted to point out that I'm STILL on the original AA Batteries... This thing must operate on voodoo magic. I'm using it quite a lot too. I haven't kept a full tally but JUST in Fallout 4 I'm already at 36 hrs of play time and all of that is on the Steam Controller.

      +ExistentialEgg What is your profile for Fallout 4 like? I was pretty unhappy with the Official Bethesda Steam Controller Profile.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +nathan cooley I put right pad to be mouse-joystick with fast accuracy and an outer ring to be like a joystick for continuous movement and I made double tap on right pad for pipboy or double tap hold for flashlight. Gyro aim on left trigger full pull. Everything else is basic controller. You can find it in community profiles for F4, it's got my name in the title.

      Depends on what you want out of it. I'd say Steam Controller because it has more potential BUT it also has more of a learning curve and can be a little finicky with non-steam games.

    Digging in the profile is I think, a good idea. Also using it as a steam controller instead of expecting to emulate a XBox controller give some pretty interesting result I think.
    My last try is to use only the pad for the control .. not the stick. like the first prototype of steam controller and combining this with an alternate control. Which mean the left pad act as a motion/stick when touching and as a Dpad when clicking.. And the right pad act as a camera/mouse when touching and as XYAB when clicking. So it's possible to play about every game while keeping the thumbs on the pads. Doing this also free one stick and four button to map something else. and there are still the paddle in the back remaining too.
    We can go crazy like touching the pad to control a camera/mouse, clicking in the middle start the gyro and click up/down/left right as ABXY and we can still add an other function for the outside ring. It mean we can control 6 button and two axis with only one pad... And the pad is large enough to get the expected function every time.
    I do feel like it may be a total revolution and it definitively worth spending little time learning it.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому +1

      +Eric Jacques (Leucome) There's definitely more to it than meets the eye. When you dig in under the hood it's pretty crazy how much we can tweak. Still a few things missing to make it perfect (taps and holds) but it's nearly there.

    • @leucome
      @leucome 8 років тому +1

      Yeah a hold/toggle function would be pretty useful. And it might come soon they seem to add new feature all the time.

Not an unboxing ( box review) or unboxing/steam controller review (let's not use it, just look at it and call it a review plus talk about the stupid box) Thank you for doing an actual review. Hope to pick up a steam controller soon. think it will be a good fit for me.

    I was so heartbroken when Steam discontinued it. I am glad I have both Controller and Steam Link. I honestly believe this is the best overall controller to my liking. I wish someone would pick it up and evolve it, refine it features.
    Also, the software is massively impressive and I do love it, it is possible to play a lot of keyboard and mouse exclusive games on this controller. The haptic feedback and gyro is amazing. This these will certainly be a hell of a legacy for those that utilized it full potential.

  • @8BitCerberus
    @8BitCerberus 8 років тому +2

    FYI on the mode shifting, you can shift the stick and ABXY buttons, and even the gyro as well. Great review though, I definitely appreciate you taking time to get used to it and learn it's quirks, rather than jumping on a quick first impression and never following up like so many I've seen.
    Battlefront runs great with it, BTW :) Easiest way I got it running was adding Origin.exe as a non-Steam game, then launching Battlefront from there. Just turn off the Origin overlay, and maybe have Origin exit when you exit the game to keep things from getting too frustrating. It does alright with Gamepad with High Precision Camera/Aim, though I felt the hand-off between the two added some "resistance" to the mouse. Not MGS5 or Skryim's complete lack of mouse input bad, but it definitely felt a bit more sluggish and needed higher sensitivity. But using it in Keyboard and Mouse mode felt great, and you can even set it up to mimic the gamepad layout if that's more comfortable to you.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +8-Bit Cerberus Hmm.. I could have SWORN that mode shifting wouldn't work for ABXY. I wonder if that was a recent'ish firmware update or maybe I just got hung up and confused because I know you can't do Taps and Holds yet and that's really what bothers me the most.
      Yeah, I definitely plan to play Battlefront with it, probably in mouse precision mode. Interesting to add Origin into Steam. Any particular benefit or reason doing it that way instead of adding Battlefront.exe into steam?

    • @8BitCerberus
      @8BitCerberus 8 років тому

      ExistentialEgg The only benefit is if the executable needs Origin to authorize it for whatever reason. The beta did not need to be loaded through Origin, but no telling what's going to happen with the release. I know games like Battlefield 4 generally don't work so well just adding their executable to Steam, and adding Origin then launching BF4 from there seems to cure any ails.
      Hoping a recent update hasn't removed the mode shifting on ABXY o.O We finally got them to add it to the triggers (still hoping for the bumpers and grips eventually, too) so they best not be taking it away from somewhere else...
      Ok, whew! Just checked and still is available in the latest beta client.
      Now if I can just get them to fix and bring back the "Stick Mouse" input type. That one would be ideal for aRPGs and MOBAs if they can get it working properly. It would basically "stick" the mouse cursor at center screen, and you could move it around, then it would snap back to center screen when you let go. Set the sensitivity low so it can't travel too far, and you've got a great joystick based movement for those types of games. Map the mouse click to the outer ring, or just hold down whatever you map to left mouse. Keepin' the dream alive.

      +ExistentialEgg That's why your Steam controller videos are as good as they are - because we can tell that you're just a regular dude with no bias, who goes out of his way to produce high quality in depth full reviews, tips, guides, and more. You're a great help to those of us in need of the truth about it. On top of that you're a one stop shop for setups and configuration, experimentation. And your presentation is professional quality. Just wanted to say thank you sir for being an invaluable resource. I link your videos on forums that cover the topic of controller issues in PC games. You single handedly saved games like Star Wars Battlefront and SQUAD for people like me who have a PC, no consoles, but got our gaming experience over the years on consoles and therefore learned to use a controller as an extension of our bodies and seek out a controller experience in the PC games that snub proper controller support. Again, thank you.

    Very interesting review! I'm liking the combination of speed and precision it gives for things like FPS's (although I'd probably still prefer mouse & keyboard, being old and stuck in my ways :)). Sorry if you answered this already and I missed it, but does it allow sharing of custom profiles? Seems like it would be a good way to get people up to speed (particularly those that don't want to mess with the settings) if they had access to a well set up profile for the particular game they're playing.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому +1

      +GearBlocks Profiles are tied to the game in Big Picture Mode. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to link to or share them individually (yet). So for now, I need to go into BPM / Configure Controller / Browse Community and then you can see what other players have made for that game. Where it's going to be a problem is for something like GearBlocks that isn't in Steam right now. I can add it as a non-steam game but I don't think anyone else could view that profile because it's not integrated into the steam ecosphere. Though I bet GearBlocks could work out VERY well with the Steam Controller. :)

    I felt the same way when I first started using the steam controller... "Oh damn, I suck at games again" like the first time I played a game using a twin stick setup. After playing around with it for a few hours though, tweaking profiles and thing... gotta say I really like the pad.

      Gotta confess... Only had the pad for around 48 hours or so now. Put in the order full price a while back, had to wait ages for it to ship and arrive... The day I got it the pads and steam link went on sale lol :/ Not a bad thing though as I've ordered a few more.
      Its a really nice middle ground controller... not quite a mouse and keyboard, not quite as familiar feeling as a standard control pad BUT its so tweakable that even games that were never intended for couch and pad use work really well. The evening I got the thing, I sat tweaking a profile to play Vanilla wow with no UI add ons... It works... amazingly well :D
      As you say in the video... tweaking the pad is what really makes it. Not everybody likes tweaking settings but if you take time with the pad it really is a cracking experience :)

    Great review. I noticed that more and more videos are beginning to understand this strange nature of the controller, which is so unique that must be used for quite a bit of time to be understood. First impressions/unboxing's are going to completely miss the point of this gamepad. To be fair, Valve has not done justice to some of the more advanced features of the gamepad, namely the gyro, which not all early users are aware of, plus there're driver features that grows costantly and adds features/fix issues so much that all reviews should be updated every now and then to be up to date... but well, from all I've seen so far the controller has a HUGE potential, the only real problems are the really steep learning curve and the necessity to rely on other people's profiles to avoid spending A LOT of time settings things up. The community have a big role on the success of this gamepad.

    It would be so much better if people reviewing games with this controller would review games that do not have controller support. That's the whole purpose of this controller. That is the #1 reason anyone would use it over an Xbox One controller...

      That doesn't apply to me so much. The vast majority of my library has controller support. I have other videos though with dayz, Squad,etc. Hell, in my last one I used it as a fishing rod.

      ***** I have the elite too, it's awesome! I'm doing research on the steam controller right now to see what none controller games I can play with it. If I can't find anything I'm interested in playing, I'll skip the steam controller for now, because there is no need for it in regards to playing PC games that can already be played with a controller.

    Gyro must be great to use with racing games. Bind the back panels to accelerate, left touch-pad click to brake, right touch-pad click to perform an action (Such as using a power up in Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, for example), bind L1 to left drift and R1 to right drift.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +Blank ᅚ Yeah, I also find myself using the gryo a lot for FPS tweak aiming (bound to full left trigger pull). It's VERY accurate and you can mess with all the settings of it. I noticed in the most recent patch they also added in Roll Left / Right bindings too. So you could have yaw rotation for steering, then roll rotation for shifting or power ups or whatever. Pretty cool and awesome that they keep improving the mapping software.

      It's great. Nothing is wearing out even though it gets near daily use. Software has improved GREATLY, still not perfect though. There are separate Action Sets now so in something like Arma I can have one set of controls for Infantry, hit Select, and then it switches to a completely different Flying set of controls. Really all I'm still waiting on are Taps and Holds for button assignments which they've stated in a June update are coming soon. All in all I'm tremendously impressed with the controller. I have a full playlist of Steam Controller vids on my channel if you are interested. I try to cover updates and go over any interesting features I come across.

    Hello there. I'm currently on Xbox Elite Controller and I'm curious how it compares to this one. What I'm especially looking forward to are gyro sensors and extreme customisation.. Do you have any experience with the controller I have? Also, can I customize controller settings in non-steam games?

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      I don't have the Elite. In fact, I don't even have an Xbox one. I have PS4 and 360 and then upgraded to Steam Controller. I personally feel like SC gives you the most bang for your buck with all the customization. If you watch more recent vids you can see that I've been covering all the updates it's gotten on the software side and it's pretty amazing what we can do now. You CAN customize for non-steam games but the caveat is that you need to add them into steam as non-steam shortcuts so the Steam Overlay functions (that's where the magic juice is for steam controller). Without the Steam Overlay it'll operate in "lizard" mode which means games will see it as a mouse and keyboard.

    • @RabbitFCB
      @RabbitFCB 8 років тому

      Wow, that was a fast answer :D. Now I'm wondering about those NS games. Can you, for example, export your settings and send it to me? I already know, that you can just upload them in steam games.

    • @RabbitFCB
      @RabbitFCB 8 років тому

      Also, that's the question that I should ask at the beggining? Is it worth switching to this controller when I'm not planning to play FPS games on it at all?

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому +1

      Yeah, profiles can be shared outside of steam. I've uploaded a few here: www.steamcontrollerdb.com/
      And yeah, to me it's the best choice for PC gaming in general. I've used it as a gyro steering wheel in simulation games, great for FPS, excellent for building games designed only for mouse and keyboard, etc. ONLY games where I personally don't find it to be better are games designed to be analog stick twin stick shooters.

      +Gavin Tang It would probably be perfect for you. The biggest hurdle most of us have with it is that we are immediately comparing and using it like a standard dual analog stick console controller. • @digitalmcp2327

    rechargeable batteries are the same as battery packs lol.. like just friggin keep them charged. grab like 10 batteries and shuffle them as you charge them.. worth it. this controller already boasts 80 hours or more per charge like omg. if you run out of battery power or need more because of your play.. idk what to tell you.. you should NOT have nay problems if you keep it charged

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому +2

      +TheCrazyBadGamer my problem with battery packs is that they die over time and aren't as easy to change out. Like in my PS4 controller. It only holds a charge for about 3 hrs but you can't easily swap out the battery, you have to disassemble the controller to even get to it. I'd always prefer AAs with the option to buy my own rechargeables.

    Do you think you would successfully be able to use this in Arma 3? Getting most of the button features like you would almost with a Xpadder? Did the mode shifting work out for applying to other buttons? Recommend for it, yes, no? Thinking about purchasing one but only really play Arma 3!

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +SeiZe ReZo I haven't committed fully to trying it in Arma 3 yet. I've only tinkered a bit. I was hoping they'd add in taps and holds so I could try to port my Xpadder profile as closely as I could. Mode shifting works but only while holding the shifting button so I couldn't make a "vehicle" set of controls how I have in my Arma xpadder profile. You'd have to make some compromises because the mapping software isn't QUITE as robust as xpadder yet but yes, I think it would work fine.

Its been frustrating because all that is there is the enable controller feature in the game itself. How do i get the xpadder layout into the game? any advice? links? videos? really appreciate it! thanks for your fast response! +1 follower for you.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +SeiZe ReZo If you are using xpadder for Arma you actually want to DISABLE controller support in the game. Xpadder is handling it and as far as the game is concerned you are still using a mouse and keyboard (those commands are mapped into xpadder). IMPORTANT: goto Arma 3 menu. Disable any detected Controllers in Arma 3: Configure / Controls / Controller / Disabled (both sets)
      I also have xpadder tutorials and an Arma 3 profile for xpadder on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/QogiBH7ITPE/v-deo.html

      +SeiZe ReZo Yes, xpadder needs to be running in the bg. And it may even require to be run as admin if it's still not working in Arma 3. You can make sure xpadder is working before launching the game by moving the right stick, it should move your mouse cursor even while on Desktop.

    Can the trackball mode work with the dpad as well?

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  7 років тому

      Both track pads could be a dpad (push click off or on, meaning you could just tap with the haptic feedback if you want), you could also bind dpad functions to left analog stick.

    • @Aristoper
      @Aristoper 7 років тому

      Nice to know on the dpad, but what I was interested in is can the d-pad on the left side work emulate a mouse cursor/trackball like the right touch pad can either to have one function as a cursor and the other for mouse look or both track pads function as a mouse just to add to the speed/or precision by utilizing both thumbs at once for increased motor skills same idea as twin analog really just applied track pad cursor movement.

    • @Aristoper
      @Aristoper 7 років тому

      I see a lot of programming potential in the steam controller though I know that much. Using the motion control for lean or strafe left and right and run walk for example seams like it could work very well and the fact that it can be toggled is a bonus. It would be even better if the shift paddles could change the motion controls to a entirely different profile setup though.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  7 років тому +1

      Yes, you can bind in the mouse more than once. I usually have it bound to Right Pad and also on Gyro. You can also have the mouse go to any position on the screen with the push of a single button (you define the position). The software has come leaps and bounds since this video. If you watch more recent vids you can see how much it's developed.

    • @Aristoper
      @Aristoper 7 років тому

      Cool I just wanted to make sure the left d-pad can also work in the same way as the right track pad for mouse look or cursor movement. I use a "cult fanatics" dual trackball setup left/right hand ;) So you know I wanted to know if I could actually emulate the twin trackballs with this controller's two touch pads good to know the software supports it. In a lot of cases I'm sure I'd prefer the d-pad software setup implementation. How functional is it for light web browsing and desktop usage tasks can it function fine as a actual desktop mouse?

      Once you get comfortable and competent with the touch pads they can be as accurate as a mouse, especially when combined with gyro for fine aim adjustments.

    • @cy9nvs
      @cy9nvs 6 років тому

      Yeah but then again, if I just think about anyone playing cs with a steam controller I can't help but feel like there's no way of him matching an equally skilled player with a mouse. While it has mouse-like accuracy for many top-down view games like civilization or Cities Skylines, that improved accuracy and customizability is actually the reason I got it instead of the xbone elite controller, but when it comes to shooters on PC it can't match a mouse in my opinion.
      Just wanna say you still did a great job with the video , I'm just some randy disagreeing with that particular point. :D

    I was about to buy this from Steam but the handling & shipping is almost £8 alone bringing the price up to £48, no chance I'm paying almost £50 for a controller.

      +Moritz K I beg your pardon? In what capacity? I have MANY vids on Steam Controller which cover updates and tweaks to the software. This still stands as a comprehensive overview for when I published it. It's from 5 months ago. I've been considering making a sort of post-review update but I would never edit this particular vid. I would just make an entirely new video that offers new insights.

    • @moritzkorsch9029
      @moritzkorsch9029 8 років тому

      Not trying to insult you or anything. I saw your comment in which you basically said you didn't like your "uhhhhh"s, so I thought you might understand what I was getting at.
      I actually cannot say anything about the content of this video, since I did not watch all of it. My comment was more about the editing and the format of your video.
      Seems like you didn't write a script for this video. That's okay if you are someone who can pull it off, but - as you said - you stumble a lot. So you either need to write a script beforehand or edit out any "uuuuuhhh"s. As I said, I didn't watch your whole video. But I bet that the information in this video could be summed up in 50% of its duration.
      I also urge you to look into the analytics of the video. I predict that the average watchtime is about four minutes and most of the views don't actually come from subscribers.
      I do UA-cam consulting for money, so I won't go further than that. I didn't want to insult you or anything. Just trying to help people make better content and you seemed like you knew already what you could improve (based on your own comment on the video).

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +Moritz K Considering you didn't actually watch the video I find any input rather useless. This was intended to be a very comprehensive video, hence the length. I go into more detail than most review vids (which is abundantly apparent by most comments and likes on this vid) If you actually watch the video, you'd find that it's HEAVILY edited and produced, my stuttering and slow speech is my thing, clearly you don't enjoy it, which is absolutely fine.

    • @moritzkorsch9029
      @moritzkorsch9029 8 років тому

      ExistentialEgg I didn't watch *all* of it, but I did watch enough to find the flaws. If you think my input is rather useless, that's up to you.
      The length has nothing to do with the comprehensiveness of it. You could still give the information in (my guess) 60% of the videos length.
      The likes also don't have much to say. The voting participation on this video is (at the time of writing) 1,5%, with a hundred votes probably coming from subscribers. This is such a small percentage that you can't actually use this as analytical information.
      I know it is edited, since I watched enough of it. I am saying you should improve your format! That means either scripting or editing! You seem like you want to build up your youtube channel and even make money from it (via Patreon). What you take from my comments is up to you.
      Yes, the stuttering and stumbling is your problem, but it becomes the viewers as soon as they watch your content. Imagine you taking a ride on the bus and the thing just goes 20mph. The driver says "I'm just slow. That's my problem". Yeah that would suck... (this might sound a bit harsh, but I am trying to make a point. Again, I am not trying to insult or annoy you.)
      Since this is an informative video, not one that is made for entertainment purposes, I think most people don't watch it wanting to enjoy it. I don't enjoy watching your video the same way I don't enjoy watching a video on "how to install windows". It just has a whole different point!

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +Moritz K You are not insulting or annoying me. I would argue the fact that you even FOUND this video is speaking to the success of my approach. My stutters and pauses are my style, I would never edit all of that out. The last thing I want is to be like every other rehearsed and bland infovid. That's what you seem to not get. I understand what you are saying, my content is not deficient (as you would clearly see it) out of ignorance or lack of trying. My slow speaking and long pauses are what makes my channel mine, that's what you aren't understanding. I'm not looking to change, I have continuous growth, and my content is often regarded as being of a higher quality than most.

  • @MrMegatony73
    @MrMegatony73 8 років тому

    The downfall to this thing seems to be that most games now support the 360 controller and the 360 controller is basically "plug and play" (although not nearly as accurate as a keyboard/mouse). Now, on titles that absolutely don't support the 360 controller, this thing seems like a good idea. But, since the vast majority of games I play work with the controller I don't think I will get one. Even if it is more accurate/mouse-like.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому +2

      +Anthony Shabrack If you are content with a 360 then yeah, it won't be a big deal. However, now that I've gotten used to it more I feel like it has more potential than any other controller I've used before. It takes some time to get used to but in the end I feel like for most games if players went head to head the steam controller would come out on top, only trumped by very fast mouse players.

    • @MrMegatony73
      @MrMegatony73 8 років тому

      +ExistentialEgg Yes, I ment to mention that in competitive multi-player games I can see it being very beneficial against your typical mouse & keyboard player.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому +6

    • @xibeon
      @xibeon 8 років тому

      +ExistentialEgg There are just too many things I don't like about the steam controller right now, the glossy surface, cheap look, the haptic, battery, no real drivers outside of steam, also the controller is way too loud for my taste. I've been also hyped about the controller at first and Valve did a pretty decent job for a first try but the Dualshock 4 is way superior controller, the best controller I ever played with. Perhaps in some years, when new revision is released I give a another try. But hey, it's only my opinion. ;)

  • @MsPokemonsoulsilver
    @MsPokemonsoulsilver 8 років тому

    soo many damn tweaks and exceptions just for this thing to work properly..... ill just stick with my dualshock 4... nice try i guess steam

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +jjtonelli Plug in and play and it'll work fine for pretty much any game. All the tweaks are there for power users who want more control (like me as an Xpadder profile creator).

    • @MsPokemonsoulsilver
      @MsPokemonsoulsilver 8 років тому

      +ExistentialEgg idk man 4 hours of getting used to how it functions, and odd backwards shape as opposed to most controllers. and what about metal gear 5 not working properly with the mouse function, that doesn't really seem like plug and play to me and i dont wanna change little settings like that between games all the time.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +jjtonelli That's why there's "Mouse Like Joystick". And you don't change them between games all the time.. you set the profile once and then it switches automatically per game.

    • @MsPokemonsoulsilver
      @MsPokemonsoulsilver 8 років тому

      +ExistentialEgg well then i stand by my point that it is not plug and play if i have to create profiles for individual games even if its just one time. i understand that in many scenarios peripheral profiles are very useful and i've even used them in the past even going as far as having 4 macro keys for most of my games, but plug and play is 2 steps step 1 plug step 2 play. no step 1.5 troubleshoot controller activity for each game and create specific profile for best functionality.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 років тому

      +jjtonelli More than likely a power-user (like me) has already created a profile for the game. And most of the bigger games are currently getting dev approved profiles catered specifically to their games. But eh, whatever, you're clearly not receptive to the controller which is fine. I personally find it to be hands-down the best PC game controller I've ever used due to it's customizable nature.
