- Let's talk about the Steam Controller, one of the most important input devices in modern history of PC Gaming, that also paved the way to the success of the Steam Deck!

Hopefully Valve makes a V2. My favorite aspect of the original SC is the big right trackpad that made it easy to play any game with mouse input.
I'm pretty sure once they release a desktop version of the steamdeck operating system or some type of new age "steam box" to market a new controller with
I'm really hopeful a V2 will happen especially now with the majority of the parts it would use being in production for the Deck. I would like the touch pads to be bigger than the Decks though.
I'll buy V2 if it's as ergonomic as a DS4 controller.
Those LB/RB are hard to press on a snap. I still like to 2 Stage setup of the triggers though.
@@digivagrant oh dude i totally feel you i use a PS5 controller because of the shape, i play racing games with manual shift+clutch so i use those bumpers alot
a V2 could have 2 analogs,
Just wanted to chime in to say that this controller is a life-saver for people with disabilities. I have ulnar tunnel and can't use a mouse anymore, and the steam controller has single-handedly saved my steam library from being useless and allowed me to continue playing games with friends.
It's a tragedy that they're so expensive now and that we never got a 2.0
Fr
Wis they still sold it
Just got one on eBay for $58
The Steam controller is one of the very few controllers that can wake a computer(& Steam Deck) from sleep via dongle. Very nice feature.
where in australia can i get a steam deck?
@charlie :p theres no queue anymore
Huh interesting. I didn't even realize my Xbox controller didn't wake from sleep (I always wiggle my mouse or tap the keyboard to wake) but it's true.
I used mine for Elite Dangerous and if you ever played that game you know its got about 100 different commands and the steam controller steps up to get the job done. The day I learned to program the controller was a day my eyes opened to how amazing this thing was.
I remember getting the steam controller on sale for five dollars on steam, Definitely a worth purchase even at full price. The amount of remapping capabilities and community support is just insane
5 dollars??????
@@yol_n yeah they were cleaning inventory because they discontinued the product. I think this was back in 2020 or something?
5 dollars? For a steam controller? You're lying.
@@umamifan No, it's not a lie.
@@umamifan I bought 2 of them from the same sell. I intended on reselling one later but I think I'll keep them.
I mainly use this controller when I'm sick, it's like the perfect remote too as you get a mouse, scroll wheel and keyboard in a controller package. I still think it's kinda underrated
I love my Steam controllers so much I bought four and still have two that have even been opened. My first two still work as they did out of the box.
pass me one lol
Lucky bugger. By the time I saved up enough to buy one, they already discontinued it. Still beating myself up over not pulling the trigger sooner.
I remember when they offered it for $5. Can't remember why but my stupid ass didn't even jump on that deal.
I just bought one for the first time yesterday on offerup for 40 bucks.
There's not a single day that I regret buying a Steam Controller. I bought mine used 5 years ago but the original owner barely used it. Like how you said it, it remained in a good condition.
I find it funny how my 8bitdo Pro 2 Controller already started drifting after 1 month upon purchase. I finished Doom and Doom Eternal on SC, had a lot of fun than a K&M.
I just bought one at the flea market. Same situation, seems to have just never been used. Got it with its dongle for 50 bucks. So far it's wonky but I'm sure that's just me needing to configure it.
It has a bit of a learning curve, but its way of utilizing both trackpads to do split keyboard text input is one of the most innovative ways I've entered text via a controller.
B
I got my steam controller from a GameStop in 2015, last one there and first one I've ever seen. It's been going strong, it's gone through a thousand hours of breath of the wild with me. Absolutely my favorite controller
battery life is amazing compared to xbox
What I liked about the Steam Controller is the Bluetooth (technically BLE) update that Valve did when the Steam Controller was already discontinued. It added Bluetooth support to the controller and allowed it to function without a dongle on Nvidia Shield, Multiple TVs, iPhones, Android etc. Combining this with the Steam Link app was great for playing games remotely or on a bigger screen. Even if the input lag of this BLE method wasn't great.
Tried the Bluetooth and it's less responsive to me compared to using the Steam dongle :(
@@digivagrant try a USB Bluetooth adapter and disabling the internal one
Wait, they updated the steam controller itself? And somehow managed to add bluetooth? How does that even work?
@@yol_n the Steam controller + dongle (and Vive/Valve Index) use controllers/radios made by Nordic Semiconductors that support Bluetooth and proprietary 2.4Ghz. They are programmable and updatable.
To add and use Bluetooth you need to update the controller using USB in Steam big picture and you can then use the Steam button + A B X Y to switch modes
@@yol_nthe same way you download more RAM.
It is wild how people keep saying that Valve drops support for their hardware, both the Steam Link and Steam Controllers may no longer be manufactured but they're still being updated and supported for years even after they've flopped. They weren't perfect for sure, but goddamn it they are not abandoned.
Edit: Changed Steam Machines to Steam Link
Edit 2: Yeah Steam Machine OS got dropped but also not at the same time? I've heard anecdotally that some people managed to get a new update somehow?
Ehhh steam machines didn't really get much support, SteamOS (the desktop version) stopped getting updates a looong time ago
@@colbyboucher6391 I think I got steam machines and steam links mixed up then, apologies for that. Will edit my comment then
@@colbyboucher6391 "SteamOS Desktop version" is still alive.
It just moved to Arch instead of Debian (due to it's rolling updates), but SteamOS 3.0 is gonna get a full release soon.
In the meantime: there's HoloISO.
the steam controller was discontinued due to being sued by scuf, they won but during.tge bumpy road, they had to discontinue the SC.
I love my SC though, i would never have loved series like halo without it, hope the V2 will also be great
I've been working as a developer for 8 years now and have worked on a couple of games featuring native Steam Controller support. I always thought the idea behind the Steam Input API was amazing. What killed it for me was just how incredibly buggy it was and how annoying it was to work with. Adding Steam Controller support to any game was always a nightmare, and the buggy API gave you very little control over anything and forced you to often recreate your entire controller mappings from scratch, because any configuration was always stored only on Steam servers, with no access to the developers except via the same mapping tool end users use. Having just a simple text file to edit for the mappings would have gone such a long way for us developers.
Nevertheless, I still think the idea itself is great and I'm glad they tried to somewhat evolve it for the Steam Deck. It remains kind of a buggy mess and sometimes disables certain configuration options for no reason at all, but when it works, it's super useful and lets you play PC games in pretty convenient ways on your handheld. It was actually pretty nice to, let's say, just add gyro aiming to the first person views in Dark Souls.
It's such an interesting device. I'm so sad they don't make them any more. I have a second (new in box) that I can't decide if I should sell for an inflated price or save in case my normal one dies. It doesn't work great for every game but when you need it for a niche game, it's amazing.
What a good documentary, so far my favourite controller. Thanks for this.
Here´s hoping for a Steam Controller 2 based on the Steam Deck layout. Having both d pad, a second stick and also the trackpads hence combining the best of both a traditional controller and the OG Steam Controller.
But WHY did they take the click out of the steam deck triggers? I really liked that feature.
@@greyspot00 you mean the two stage triggers? i hope they bring them back for "Steam Controller 2.0" but TBH i´ve found extremely little to no use for them in my experience.
You won't see backside buttons until 2031. Steam lost their patent case when with the original controller. The steam deck isn't a standalone controller, so the patent didn't apply. Gotta love US patent law... What a joke.
@@meeponinthbit3466 They appealed and won.
The editing in the video is so satisfying. Especially the first second in time with the music.
Such a great video man. Really enjoyed it.
very good review, like your videos please upload more!
This was such a good review. It literally mentions everything I've wondered about if a long term user were to give their modern opinion on the steam controller.
10/10 video
SC V2 PLEASE
always good to see a good sc video
The new UI in particular is really nice. Definitely an improvement over BP.
That slick stick says everything.
I have two of them, one still in the original packaging. One of the best functioning controllers I ever used, 2nd to the quest 2 controller.
The Steam Controller walked so the Deck could run.
A new steam controller based on the stream deck's controller would be awesome.
Im glad this existed, it paved the way for the awesome control layout of the steamdeck, which is so good I wish I could use it as a regular controller on my main PC
you deserve more subs, very good quality video
Bought 1 on release : "this is genius!" immediately bought 2 spares (so glad I did).
9:10 This is the one thing I completely disagree with. The new Steam Input is abysmal for some use cases - compared to the old, Big Picture-style Steam Input.
Example: I want to invert my camera controls on the thumbstick. Vertically _and_ horizontally
Old UI:
- open Controller Settings
- click the Right Analog on the visualized controller before you
- immediately realize there is no setting for this on the current screen
- click on Additional Settings
- select Invert Horizontal Axis On
- select Invert Vertical Axis On
- press the back button thrice
Deck UI:
- open Controller Settings
- scroll down to Quick Settings
- click Invert Right Thumbstick X-Axis
- realize you cannot do the same to Y-Axis here
- click on Edit Layouts
- click on Joysticks
- try to comprehend that the Right joystick is the first 4 rows
- figure out that the very first row is what controls the movement
- click on the cog for settings
- try to figure out which sub menu to use
- click on Output
- spend a moment thinking because you were looking for a setting called Invert Y-Axis
- tick Invert Vertical Axis
- press the back button five times
And it is even worse if you want to use the buttons instead of clicking.
Which is an issue if they roll out the Deck UI for desktop, where you could be using a controller without a mouse nearby:
- open Controller Settings
- down
- down
- down
- down
- confirm
- up

I definitely like the visuals more, and the simple toggles instead of the select -> On/Off is way, way better.
But it's a serious problem that I can no longer see the whole controller with its binding at once.
And Steam knows this, because they made that* screen the opening screen _before_ the settings (and also the Preview).
But 1) you can't edit anything there, and 2) the labels don't correspond to the buttons' physical locations.
And I appreciate how they put the Horizontal Invert toggles in the quick settings, but I'm one of those weirdos that wants to invert both.
So it's just a distraction to me. It'd be great if I could pin _my own_ favorites there.
And as a power user, I will say, Virtual Menus work _waaay_ better
If they make a 2.0, definitely it needs two sticks, but also I'd want a proper D-pad.
It doesn't need sticks thats what the touch pads are for.. i wouldn't say no to a dpad tho
@@HollowRick The sticks on the steam deck are way better than the pads for most use tbh
Just get a ps4/5 controller with back buttons
Tbh, idgaf about having a second stick, the touchpad was more than suitable (& better). But not having a proper D-pad was easily that controller's Achilles' heal.
Tbh just turn the steamdeck into a bigger controller
Loved this. Never seen your channel before but as someone who adores the Steam Controller and wished it was more universal in support, I echo a lot of your views here.
I wonder if they'd released their original concept, with just the two trackpads, weirdly shaped ABXY buttons, screen and thumbstick if we'd even be talking about it this far down the line, as it stands this thing is my favourite controller hands down.
Great review, tnx mate
good video! tho one thing, whats ur keyboard??
Still have mine, love it.
underrated controller, especially if you don't play competitive multiplayer.
great to see a new stylish video
Amazing video.
Recently got one for early Christmas, love it
Absolutely adore the inputs on steam deck
Still will never forgive Valve for letting me buy it when they were doing the $5 clearance deal and then emailing me saying that they accidentally sold to many and could not sell me one
Very cute intro, simple but snappy
God I wish a new version of this controller is released following the success of Steam Deck
That's what led me here. I wish they made a new one that's pretty much a steam deck layout without the track pass or maybe with them
I feel like some sort of built in library of user submitted game control presets could have made the process of setting up the steam controller easier.
Similar to the use of the proton database for game compatibility on the steam deck and other linux systems.
EDIT: Apparently this exists! Now I kind of want A steam controller.
But there is such database for it built into Steam. Pressing the Steam button mid game, you can choose from all available presets detected for the game, including user created ones. Also, you can share your own. As far as I remember this even works for games imported from other launchers eg. with SteamGridDB Manager.
that exists! in big picture mode in a game, just press the steam button and you can browse community presets
@ @Sheepy Thank you! I had no idea this existed.
This system practically gave birth to Steam input, which now officially supports Xbox and PS controllers, and most lately, Switch joicons as separate units as well!
The SC userbase also basically established popular presets for almost any game you can think of for new users for when the Steamdeck came around.
Really wish I had bought more of these when they were $5. I really didn't appreciate mine enough; glad it still works perfectly *fingerscrossed*
I still have mine along with steam link, absolutely love this controller
Since I use my Steam Deck 50% of the time in docked desktop mode having a new version of their controller would be awesome.
Back when this came out I sold a bunch of CSGO skins I won from gambling in the eSports tournaments and bought one of these and the Steam deck. I haven't really used either and I am bloody hopeless with the controller, but I need to spend a while just using it to get the hang of it. I hear it's insanely powerful if you get good with it
Do you know how to manage vibration and hepatic settings? It seems like steam removed that configuration from the Steam client, at least its not longer like it was
On 1:29. How did you make an extra touch menu by sliding up from center of the left touchpad?
As someone who has used the steam controller since launch and does extensive configuration work... I honestly do not like the new ui. It is way more tedious to work with, taking anywhere from 2 to 5 additional button clicks to do anything. Seriously... go back to old big picture mode and add a long press activator to a button. Then try to add a long press command in the new ui. Then try to remove both of them. Compare the experience of those things. The new ui SUCKS for detailed configuration work.
And I also really dont steam controller v2 to just be the Decks controls. Having used both, I cannot use the trackpads on the Deck the same way I can on the Steam Controller; the Decks pads are too small, the wrong shape, and positioned in a poor ergonomic location. The Steam Controller found an audience, however small that audience is. I really do not see why a Steam Controller v2 should try to alienate that audience to appeal to a more traditional/casual audience. Make both a proper Steam Controller v2 AND a "Deck Controller" imo.
This ^ you're comment should be pinned
Very good comment. ❤ I Love my steam controller. The steam deck trackpads are more precise but not that ergonomic as the steam controllers right trackpad. Hope they will release a version 2 of the steam controller in old design but new technic😊
I absolutely love the ability of changing every button for whatever you want, it makes you able to construct your own comfortable layout for any game, and that's great. But the reason why I've bought my Steam Controller - is a gyroscope. I was astonished by the idea that I can aim in games using movements of my hands in the air (even if they hold a controller) instead of just moving mouse on the desktop. Yes, it was a pain in the ass to setup gyroscope sensitivity like I want and adjust it right, but it was worth every single hour. It's not ideal type of aiming, but it gives so good feelings when you move your controller and see your weapon moving at the same time - like you are actually holding it -, that I really enjoy very much to play games with it instead of keyboard and mouse. And of course, it's also satisfying to move third person camera like that, still feels smooth and like a freaking magic.
Still have mine after five years to the point that the joystick is worn down but still works like an absolute charm. The most interesting controller I've ever used, hands down. This is the nerd controller that wants it their way, it never caught on because the average consumer doesn't like configuring settings right out of the box because that takes time. This time spent configuring is well worth it as it makes for a more well refined experience, especially with games that have limited options for controller inputs. Massively underrated controller.
Thank you!
one of my friends gave me one of these a while back as a form of paying me back for something, and I haven’t wanted to use any other kind of controller since.
while weird to get used to at first, it’s now easily the best controller i’ve ever used.
As a console gamer who recently switched to PC gaming. I can confirm.. an analog stick for movement and a mouse pad for aim/camera is the best universal gaming setup.
Despite how I never would have given this design a second thought a year and a half ago.
I've pretty much been using half an Xbox controller and a mouse to play open world games like GTA that require driving and shooting. Keyboard and mouse for fps, and controller for action adventure titles.
True I use the aimon xb elite v
I can't believe 7 years has passed already. How time flies. If i game on PC it's always just with an Elite Series 2 controller or just good old mouse and keyboard anyway. i tend to just stick to Series X so i can laze in the recliner with the cupholders though nowadays.
I bought a steam controller probably about a year after it first came out, it was on sale at Gamestop for about $20-$30. It was cool, but I didn't have much use for it, so I returned it after a few days. A few years later, presumably at the time they discontinued them, they were on sale for like $2.99 so of course I bought one. The Steam Link in home streaming box that had an MSRP for $100 was also on sale for a similar price so picked up one of those two. They are both pretty neat, but they've just been sitting in my closet for most of the time since I've bought them. I think the biggest issue with them is, as you said, the amount of configuration you need to do to get them working properly. I just don't have time for that now, hell I didn't even have time for that when I was a student and didn't even have a full time job like I do now.
What's that Might and Magic looking game you're playing? And what about that fps with a giant Commodore 64 in the background? Looks interesting.
I got mine when they were selling them off really cheap. I currently have a Steam Deck on the way and this video just convinced me to give the controller another go :)
your video just made me dust off my old controller and give it a go again, trying to set it up good
I bought mine just a few weeks after it launch. One of the best controller I ever had. Too late to buy when it was on sale for $5 though, should have bought 2 more. Sadly, the left back button of mine stop working, but since very few games really needs it, I'm still using it. Once you get used to the x/y/a/b button placement, it's gold from there and I got used to it after like a few days. Personally, the major downside of steam controller and steamInput as a whole is that fact that, for the first few years, you can't use it as a controller if it's not a steam game. Outside of steam, it would behave like a mouse and keyboard. The fact that I had to download a 3rd party app so it would behave and detect as a controller by non steam games is probably one of the reason it did not sell well. Not everyone will have the time and patience to google "how to setup steam controller for non steam game."
Honestly with the steam deck and if they made a steam controller 2, it needs to work like a regular xbox controller for non steam games. What they can do is to make steaminput a separate or that as long as steam app is open, you don't need to add the non steam game to steam. If you can set it as a xbox/ps controller even for non steam games, it would truly be a universal pc controller.
If you add a non steam game to your steam library and launch it through steam, you can usually play it with the steam controller config settings and even save custom bindings for just that application / game including emulating keyboard inputs.
@@tiggerbiggo I had my steam controller just a few weeks after it was launch, I think I've tried every customer settings I can think of and read about in forums. Adding a non steam games to steam doesn't always works. The best option is really to use 3rd party app, that rebinds the steamInput in system level, like glossi. Using this, you don't even have to run steam and steam controller would work.
btw, this same app, can also be use in steam deck if you install windows and your having issues with the controllers when the steam app is off.
You can make it behave it like a xinput device if you add the app to steam via the steam menu, it'd be awkward if steam started injecting shit into apps you didn't ask it to interact with ya know?
Got it working on rpcs3 in like 2 minutes and it even emulated the right stick on the trackpad without any setup required.
Lazy nub. Also, fix your button. I fixed both my shoulder buttons after they broke down. Warranty be damned
I absolutely love the Steam Controller. I have 3, my first one's right bumper broke the same year the Controller was discontinued. I bought 2 more cheap, they're both still working beautifully. Would love for Steam to at the least bring back support for this unique piece of gaming hardware.
*Edit:*
Also got my brother's SC where his left bumper broke. Now I'm just going to swap parts and his Controller will be back up. Thinking of buying 2 3D printed bumpers for my first Controller and see how that works out.
i like how you talked about needing a wireless adapter for the Xbox one controller, but the controller you showed in the video is the model with bluetooth :0
New viewer here, enjoyed the video very much, subbed :)
The triggers are also dual stage and they took that away in the Steam Deck, it would be nice to see the best of both on a Steam Controller 2. 2 Thumbsticks, 2 trackpads, 4 back buttons, and dual stage triggers.
Dual stage is nice for FPS games as you can do ADS + Fire or Fire + Reload on 1 Trigger
now that they made the steam deck i really wish they would try to give the steam controller another shot, by incorporating all the features that are on the steam deck and putting them on a controller, including both sticks, dpad, face buttons and track pads, with additional buttons at the back, and maybe implement their own adaptive triggers, which may not be usefull now, but if we give incentive to developers to use we might get games to implement them.
God I would be over the moon if we got a steam controller v2 that had a control layout like the steam deck with duel stick a dpad and the duel touch pads. It would solve my biggest problem with the steam controller. The lack of a 2nd thumb stick bugged me at times as the touch pad wasn’t a perfect stand in but the touchpad was also quite nice for some things. Also the steam controller still has my favorite shell shape out of any controller I’ve used. Nice and large grips that just fall into your hands. I could use my steam controller way longer then I can use my switch pro controller before getting discomfort in my hands
Steam Controller 2.0 Needs SteamVR tracking. I wanna use my Steam Controller in VR!
What are the games you showed us? I would love to search some of them ❤
I was late to the Steam Controller party, only just bought 2 off ebay last year. While I wasn't completely sold at first, they've grown on me to the point that I've stopped using other controllers.
To me the lack of a second thumbstick actually has never been an issue, I even find the trackpad superior most of the time. What I don't like is the trackpad used as a DPad, that part actually sucks and I'm glad the Deck has a proper DPad.
Can I use this to play boxing games like undisputed and fight night which rely primarily on the right stick to throw punches?
Well, this was a really nice review!!
But... I want to ask something, is there a way i could get one controller? Is valve still selling them?
@Kat Thank you very much, in fact I have searched in some places, but there is very little product that I can find, they even sell them for approximately 20 - 25 dollars
@Kat Not months. Years. That was around 2020
I got one back in 2017, and absolutely loved it. I always preferred playing games with a controller (but I'm exclusively a PC player), and Steam Controller allows you to play not just shooters with the precision of a mouse, but even games like Factorio, and comfortably at that.
It's a shame how it all ended, and made me hate Scuff even more. As far as I understand, they were actually planning to develop Steam Controller 2 until the lawsuit, judging by the patents Valve has made and stuff like that.
i like this video, thx. The "new" steam controller sounds Great. Would buy too.
I picked this up years ago when it was being discontinued for like 10 bucks from steam and I still use it on occasion and wish I could get another one for anywhere near the same price lol
The SC is so friggin ergonomic and feels so good once you have your mappings dialed in. Other than the great suggestion here of more grip buttons, the only way I could imagine substantially improving it would be to split the controller a la Joy-Cons or split keyboards. Squishing both of your arms close together to hold a little controller just isn't comfortable and should have been outmoded years ago. Some sort of divine marriage between Nintendo Joy-Cons and the SC would birth my perfect game controller
Thanks for the nice review! However, could I ask you to list the games you showed in the video (aside from the Battlefield ones)? They look interesting! Thank you!
Would also like to search about these games in the video.
Still have mine. Used it hardly any times!
I wish my SC isn't gathering dust. But I also don't want to sell it
Great video though! Really great points!
Running 2x Steam Controllers on SteamOS 3.3. Total convert. Will instant purchase a Steam Controller v2 if they ever release one.
Pretty sure this video was recommended by a bigger channel maybe fan the deck?
Edit yeah they put a video link in the description!!! well deserved you made some great points about the controller.
I was an early adopter of the Steam Controller, and I agree the missing right thumbstick was probably the biggest issue for the average gamer. If it could have been used as a "basic" controller, with the added functionality of the touchpads, I believe I would still be using it. The missing thumbstick took away more than the touch pads added.
I don't think the steam controller could totally replace a normal controller for me but I can see some games benefiting from it more than others
I literally found one of these guys in a Thrift Store the other day, immediately had to pick it up.
I originally bought a Steam Link and Controller from GameStop in 2016, wound up selling both in 2018 after not using it as much as I intended, to buying another Steam Controller just now. I managed to find one in great condition with a dongle for $40, which currently is a steal for it from what I see. I used to play ESO with it a LOT in 2016 but when I started playing competitive titles (especially Rocket League) I ended up not using it for long periods of time until I got rid of it. I'm just getting back into ESO again so I'm looking forward to pouring more hours into the game with this!
Lovely and underrated controller
I hope they make another one for the Steam deck that function like a Nintendo Pro controller, but with any OS support as well
I love the Steam controller so much. I find it so easy to use and it has opened up a whole new world of gaming for me. I actually was so worried about mine breaking i bought 2 new ones as spares. Still using my original one.
i figured out Songs of Conquest but there is a lot of game footage of games i didn't recognize and am curious what they were...
my dad and i have been thinking of getting a steam controller for both of our pcs, is it worth it?
love the fact that hyper charge unboxed was on here
You don’t have to tweak settings though, anyone can upload settings and the community has provided, especially for any popular or FPS game. And you can access this very easily.
I wish I bought a bunch on sale. Valve always support their stuff, and they go for $200 now
What good video and nice Laco watch
Love the controller and just started using one again regularly for star citizen!
While at work I can flip through the fps, flight, and ground vehicles
But at home I leave it on fps to sit back with the dual vkbs
Game changer for the industry.
Not only was the controller itself brilliant...but ut also paved the way for steam's universal controller mapping api...no more need for 3rd party mappers. i paid $50 at launch and when Valve blew them out for $15 shipped...I picked up another...still new sealed in it's box because the 1st one is practically indestructible.
Best controller ever!!!
Mine's all beaten up, but still works fine. I love the configurability and the trackpads are super accurate
I still love my steam controller, plus it's input system was ported over to deck nearly perfectly
I gotta try this controller out
