    not really a hidden gem, or an indie, but one of the best low end game i played last year was Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I did not expect it to run at 60 fps on my over 10 year old laptop's intel HD 4000 (i had to turn off grass & bloom tho). I only played it because my gpu died and had literally nothing to play, but it turned out to be one my of the best decisions ever.
    I feel like people forget how there are many old PC games that run well on low end and have aged quite well, Batman Arkham city, Bioshock, Stalker, Fallout 3 and new vegas, the older hitman games, prototype probably some more than arent coming to my head rn

    • @smudgey5000
      @smudgey5000 9 місяців тому +5

      That's funny because even high end rigs have trouble with that due to it being poorly optimized for anything over 2 cores. I assume GOG version or no mods?

    • @Quasartist
      @Quasartist 9 місяців тому +2

      I love the sentiment, but after having Fallout New Vegas corrupt my save 4 different times, 3 of which had a boatload of stability mods installed from Vortex which is supposedly the best one, I gotta call cap lol.
      But I can attest to Batman being a good decision, I can nearly max out the settings with my rig which was beefy when I made it but now considered a budget build.

      I've been replaying it on the steam deck, for the most part it's been running silky smooth, but certain oblivion gates tank it to 30 fps?

    • @soudi1684

      i don't have issues with oblivion on steam deck, do you have certain settngs turn on ? battery savers, certain hz refresh rate ? the problems are the controller schema on steam deck

    4:28 This kind of aesthetics is closer to the SNES, the NES was displaying less colors and effects like parallax (which is still possible on the NES but less used)

    Great video. Vast majority of computers don't have a dedicated graphics card. They have an APU or CPU GPU combo like Intel chips. These have surprisingly become quite capable over the years. Some of the newer ones could even run games from the last generation of consoles.
    Side note, Axiom verge is amazing. Trace rising theme is great. I also recommend Blasphemous.

    Need to hear about what RPGs/cRPGs you like in this low spec world - and, yeah, I realize some of them might be obvious, LOL.
    I find myself, albeit my current nowadays self, wanting immersion over graphics - I still enjoy old emulated classics (Ultima, Bard's Tale) - but I have poked at the new enhanced nostalgia with a lot of interest. Skald looks like a very, very good contender for me personally.

    One of my favourite low spec games is Nova Drift. Top-down view roguelite with a LOT of player control over the run and very satisfying synergies leading to both high run variety and low frustration at RNG. Runs are about an hour, depending on skill level, and there is a gameplay modifier to jump into lategame with a stock of upgrades

    I sold my GTX 1080 when the prices were sky high during the pandemic, and used I5-8600K's integrated graphics to play some low spec games for 10 months til' I could bag a 3070 FE for retail price. Here are a few that you reminded me of with your list:
    Death Road To Canada - for the roguelike pixel action game with choose your own adventure style stuff. You choose your crew and can get and maintain vehicles as you travel north to escape into Canada from the zombie apocalypse.
    A Short Hike - played this one since it was on Game Pass and really enjoyed it. It's really relaxing and charming, and was fun without being too long.
    Endless Sky - for space action and shooting sim that reminds me of the old days growing up with Escape Velocity and EV: Nova. This one is straight up free.

    Thanks again, Mr. Dweeb, I absolutely love your Hidden Gems series! There always seems to be one game from your list that I've played and several others that I add to my list of future titles. You reminded me that I really need to go back and finish Axiom Verge and add Bot Vice to my list. There was a Contra-like game in your opening and closing montage, with the protagonist running up a diagonal platform. Do you remember the name of that title? I kinda suck at the genre, but I always have 1 - 3 on my system as they are great for on-the-go gaming.
    One of my recent 'Low-spec' faves is, UnMetal. The humor might not stick as well if you hadn't played the Metal Gear series but I often had to stifle laughter late at night when playing it in bed. You can pick it up on most current-gen consoles, but I played it on the Deck.

    Great to see it on this list. I have a gaming rig now that will play anything but games like Axiom Verge are as good as anything that has high end requirements. The NES was the console of my teenage years and Metroid a top exclusive title I still like to go back and play. Axiom Verge is a classic not to be overlooked.

    Ooh, boy... I could list pretty much all my games here, since my PC is ancient=\ Here are some that are not retro and are hidden/forgotten:
    - Aquaria - beautiful underwater metroidvania;
    - Bad North - minimalist roguelite (RL) RTS;
    - Battle Chef Brigade - brawler with match-3 cooking system and a nice story;
    - Bleed 1 and 2 - simple and short run-and-gun games. Get two at once, have a day or two of old-school fun;
    - Broforce - Contra-like action platformer;
    - Card Crawl, Card Crawl Adventure - cool little solitaire RLs;
    - Charlie Murder - my absolute favourite beat'em-up;
    - Children of Morta - Hades-like story-based RL about family. Has 2-player coop;
    - Dead Estate - Isaac-like RL. Sexy Newgrounds artstyle aside, the game itself is actually really fun, and surprisingly wholesome;
    - Deathstate - kinda like a precursor to Vampire Survivors. Had a ton of chill fun with it on a crappy laptop while stuck on a business trip in the middle of a desert;
    - Death Road to Canada, Organ Trail, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure - roadtrip RLs, kinda parodying Oregon Trail. All three are different, all three are great;
    - Downwell - RL action platformer. You just go down a well; somehow have 60 hours in this thing;
    - Dungeon of the Endless - RL tower defense/strategy with indirect control. Cool idea and pixel art, coop;
    - Eldritch - RL stealth FPS. Looks like crap, plays like a dream;
    - Hedon - Hexen-like fantasy FPS with puzzles;
    - Nightmare Reaper - RL looter boomer shooter. Kinda demanding, YMMV on your PC. Love this game to bits;
    - Nuclear Throne - RL top-down shooter;
    - Overfall - RL tactical RPG with a ton of cool random story bits;
    - Pit People - weird simple tactical RPG, Adventure Time meets Mad Max meets HoMM;
    - Reigns, Reigns: Her Majesty, Reigns: Game of Thrones - card-based RL choice-based games. A tad forgotten, but very cool;
    - Road Not Taken - RL socoban puzzle with a town and relationships;
    - Slipstream - old-school racing, basically Outrun;
    - Space Tyrant - minimalist, boardgame-ish 4X strategy with short matches;
    - Stikbold! - silly arcadey dodgeball;
    - Super Blood Hockey - great little arcadey sports game. Another good one is Tape to Tape, a silly hockey RL, but that one is in EA and is more demanding to the PC. (Also, if you like arcadey sports and RPGs and haven't played Pyre - you really, really should);
    - Super House of Dead Ninjas - RL action platformer. Got overshadowed by Dead Cells, but is still great (and more fast-paced);
    - Sunless Sea - weird, gothic/eldritch, story-based, RL boat managing sim;
    - Unrailed! - silly little train-managing RL, with coop;
    - Viking Squad - beat'em-up along the lines of Castle Crashers;
    - West of Loathing, Shadows Over Loathing - silly turn-based RPGs with absurdist humor;
    - Ziggurat - RL FPS.
    Bonus category: PC games that everyone should own. Hours of fun on any ol' PC; just get them, trust me: Bastion, Brawlhalla, Castle Crashers, Darkest Dungeon, FTL, Horizon Chase Turbo, Into the Breach, Kingdom Two Crowns, Left 4 Dead 2, Mount & Blade: Warband, Portal 1 and 2, Rusty Lake series, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, Slay the Spire, Spelunky 1 and/or 2, Terraria, The Binding of Isaac, Torchlight 2, Vampire Survivors... Plus classics like Diablo 2, Doom 1 and 2 (and other old FPS like Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior; all 3 have Steam remasters), HoMM 3, old GTAs, Warcraft 3, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War...

      the X220 can do more than THAT ... I have one with a mobile i5 and I've been playing resident evil 5 and 6 at 30fps-ish on that poor thing.

    Nice video and interested to see the follow ups as some of those clips of the 'unmentioned' look awesome. Since these will technically run on a potato do you think there are any that might run on something like Winlator on a Android handheld?

    I recommend "It Lurks Below". It's made by David Brevik, who was one of the main designers on Diablo and Diablo 2, and it is essentially a mash-up of Terraria+Diablo. So, kind of a survival ARPG dungeon crawl I guess. The whole game is only like 256 MB but has a ton of gameplay. It supports controller or KBM, but in my opinion it plays much better with KBM.

    Do you need a big beefy PC to run?
    Gamers: NO.
    Developers: Yes, we're too lazy to optimize it so just buy a new pc.
    Manufacturers: Yes, otherwise our planned obselesence model won't work.

    Also, Ocean's Heart and Astalon were good.
    Play-on-a-potato JRPGs I'd recommend are Shadows of Adam and Rise of the Third Power. Very nostalgic for me since i was a big Final Fantasy guy in the SNES days.

    I know it's not considered "hidden" by any stretch, but Hotline Miami is a good contender. Literally a potato game that I can run on my aunt's all-in-one computer from 2015 with no stutters. I think that's just the nature of a pixel art game but still its a worthwhile game to play.
    Another low requirement game I enjoyed was Dreaming Sarah, it's a similar game to Undertale. And I also liked Neon Struct but admittedly I didn't finish it, it's a very basic 3D first person stealth-ish game that focuses more on telling a story rather than gameplay so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Then there's also Xeodrifter. Not sure if that one is a hidden gem either but I had never heard of it. Its a Metroidvania with 4 different levels but you go back and forth between them a decent bit, and its very short. So short that there's an achievement for beating the game in under an hour, which I got on my second or third try. Not difficult, not super long, but a fun way to kill a few hours on the weekend.
    Bot Vice looks right up my alley, and gives me some really strong Gameboy Advance vibes. It was on sale at 80% off so I went ahead and bought it lol gonna be a fun little weekend.

    Every game by the Post Void developer seems to say "Hey, you're going to either get motion sick or have an epileptic fit from our games, and we're cool with that if you are." Bot vice was one of the first games I bought when I got my pc it's tough, but a good value, also the developer makes mostly games that cost about a dollar or two depending on the day.

    My brother in Christ... StarSector. It's the best space game ever made and it runs on a toaster. It's an actual game and not these throwbacks to times when games were made simple. Low graphical requirements do not equate simplistic gameplay.

    Hello, for a future episode you could check out also Graveyard Keeper, it has good pixelart, an amazing soundtrack, very good leveling upnsystem with complex skilltree, it is like a darker version of Stardew Valley, it also has an amazing story with several DLC's that just add new layers to the storry adding back storyes to sidecharacters.
