a when I have to mark things like this, I use a pinpoint paint pen. I always use yellow; shows up really good. This video is top grade. My compliments!
That steering column bolt can be removed with the steering wheel turned 180 degrees and then center and lock the wheel after the bolt is removed but u-joint yoke still in place. Install in reverse. Also using a center punch to mark drivetrain locations is a good permanent marking system.Striking the stud of the tie rod ends with a hammer needs no special tools and works without damaging the boots.
Great videos. I started getting frustrated when taking out my steering gear when it wouldn't fit out of the wheelwell opening and so found your videos. Good job, great explanation and great camera placement. I'm hoping that I can just remove the same exhaust section that you removed without touching the frame or driveshaft. I'm hoping that I will then have enough room to tilt the steering gear up and pull it out of the passenger side.
I have a 2011 Buick Enclave with 80k miles on it. Just got it used. The steering wheel makes all kinds of Star Wars droid noises when I turn it back and forth while stopped and idling. I see (now, after buying) that there is some issue with the these vehicles steering and there is actually a Class Action Lawsuit against GM about it. Do you know if there is any new information on this? Is GM doing anything for these 2009- 2012 Lambda Class vehicles steering component issues?
Well, to get the steering gear out, the exhaust has to come out. To get the exhaust out, the front sub-frame has to be lowered. Your instructions prove to be on the money!
Hey great I was able to do everything now I can't get the steering column in with the rack and pinion its not sliding down what am I doing wrong ? It looks like its in place the cut is facing the bolt
+Alejandro Rivas Did you remove the pinch bolt from the steering shaft before trying to slide it down? If so, then you might just need to us a flathead screwdriver to pry open the steering shaft side slightly to get it to slide down.
My 08 Enclave has good power steering but I am getting a popping sound when I turn. If I don’t push the gas it won’t hardly do it. I had the front left CV axle replaced and it helped at first then it came back. Would the steering shaft or any of the rack and pinion or the gear box cause this? Also mine is FWD so I don’t have a shaft to take out that goes to the rear.
just wanted to reply for others that are reading your comment. That sound is most likely a CV joint popping. When those start to go out, they can make a popping noise.
@@luisdaniel75 Yes its normal. Its a sign that your CV joint or universal joint is somewhat worn out. Ive driven around on popping CV joints for years and nothing happened. Even if they break, the CV joints dont hold up the structure of your vehicle, so it wont kill you. It will incapacitate your vehicle until you get them replaced.
You mentioned you were trying to isolate another front end noise when you added a zerk to the ball joint; Did you ever figure out what it was? I've had terrible front end noise. I replaced lower control arms and ball joints, as well as a deteriorating lower control arm bushing. Also replaced steering control rods and bushings and still have terrible rattle. My mechanic is telling me most of that rattle is the play in my disintegrating steering gear, and I know it's going bad, but I hate to do all that labor hoping it will solve the noise thing. Hey, thanks for posting such a clear video!
I've got a knocking sort of noise on the front drivers side. Happens on uneven surfaces. Large bumps aren't so much an issue nor is turning. Haven't figured it out yet. Is this similar to your symptom?
It's been about 2 years since you've done this work. Has the new part held up alright? Considering buying an '08 Enclave and I'm just preparing myself for possibly having to do this repair in the future.
+Chris Bruno Awesome! Are there any other repairs that I should take into consideration before deciding to buy the '08 Enclave? It has already had the wave plate replaced in the transmission so I shouldn't have to worry about that common issue too.
Well, the only other major repair that I dealt with was the timing chain replacement. That would be a big deal if you had to handle it. Otherwise, all of the repairs we've had with ours have been relatively minor.
Hey thanks for posting this, I have a gmc Acadia 2008 awd and going around turns gets pretty jerky. I'm trying to diagnose the problem. Looks like this may the problem
I had my steering gear replaced on my GMC Acadia a few months back now my a/c stopped working. Do any of the a/c lines have to be removed to perform his job. My car has 32000 miles I'm very disappointed with this car and the $2000 dollars I had to pay this job.
If they had to replace the power steering pump and the steering rack, then the dealer may have found it easier to just drop the engine. If they did that, then the A/C lines to the car are disconnected. Otherwise, there is no reason to disconnect the A/C to just change the steering rack. Hope this helps!
+anticommander7 SPECIAL POLICY 14329/POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT. If you take it to dealer they know what it is. It isn't a recall, it is extended warranty that covers this. Mine was losing power steering when I went to turn, then it went all the way out.
GM only pays the new power steering pump if it leaks and caused losing power. However, you have to pay for the gear and the labor cost. Dealers recommend to replace the gear whenever replacing the pump

bigzzzt I'm glad I could help! Good luck!
I got this replaced on my 2011 Chevy traverse at the Chevy dealerships at 96k under warranty big item cost was $2,000 dollars not cheap.
My hero, thnx
Is it possible to unplug an actuator on the driver side while replacing steering gear?
What noise have you been having a problem with.?

@@bmo5082 thanks for your response, so I assume this noise is normal? I have this little noise when doing a sharp turn and then tires back straight

Our noise ended up being the strut bearing. Good luck!
Is it possible I can take it out with out taking the exhaust off?
Hi Alejandro, I believe it will be rather difficult to remove with the y-pipe in place. Sorry. Good luck!

Any chance you can share where you got the pdf instructions?
Hi Gabriel, I bought the GM service manual from Ebay many years ago (~2010).
There is a recall now. I got my 2010 Traverse done at no cost.
+Sean Tisdale Do you have a link to the recall?

+Sean Tisdale this wasn't a recall? You was still under warranty or had some sort of warranty when you got this done?
+Jack Davis it isn't a recall it is a warranty extension. it extends it to 10 year, 120,000 miles. there is one on the water pump also
