The Cars: The Making of ‘Drive’ + The Love Story Behind the Hit | Synth Recreation & Mixing Tips
How The Cars’ ‘Drive’ became an 80s classic ballad, blending synth innovation and heartfelt storytelling. Discover the emotional heart behind ‘Drive’ and the groundbreaking synths that made it unforgettable.
This week I dive into how Ric Ocasek and Paulina Porizkova’s connection brought emotional depth to this classic love song and the synth breakdown setup that defined its sound. I recreate “Drive” in my studio, using vintage and software tools to get as close to the original sound as possible. Plus I´ll show you how to use Logic Pro synths and plugins, including reverb, EQ, and other effects, to emulate the original track’s sound.

Greatly reproduced!
My all time favorite song 🎧 👍🏿
One of my favourite love songs ever. Good job!
None of these remakes ever get the lead CMI Violin Sample riff right 😔
😔
Really nice
Funny how the claves never sounded like claves which are a lot higher and hollow sounding, I can get a similar sound to this with a rimshot pitched down which is actually what I thought Prince did
The original is one of the worst mixed pop records in history 😂
Another great video of an 80’s classic.
Thanks!
Its a very, very good sounding recreation of Drive .... there is only one - very important - thing ... the staccato B--major chord (F#/B/D#) is played 4 times .... and every >second< of the four there is a D-major (F#/A#/D#) --> Bm/Dm/Bm/Bm. Try it and your recreation is nearly perfect! :-)
How did I missed that!? Thanks!
"What do you think makes this song so special?" IMO, the most critical words in her lyric are near the middle, "...come on darlin', let's exchange the experience...". With that simple expression Kate nailed the concept of human relationships - since the dawn of relationships. Kate is a child prodigy that became a lyrical genius. I hope this 'one' song encourages others to discover ten dozen of her other songs. The streaming numbers give me hope - she'll surpass 2.5 billion streams for her 123-song catalog in a few days.
Excellent!! I was singing along the whole time.
It's hard not to do it when listening to this song. Thanks for watching!
Amazing how something as simple as 1 snare beat per bar can give a song a unique feel. Great job.
Thanks and that's exactly what I thought when I was recording this, the same with the tambourine and the rimshot, adding the right effects you can get a unique sound.
Love this! You really nailed it! And the demonstration was really enjoyable, too. Thank you!
Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed it! It has been a fun exercise to explore these amazing tracks!
what's the quiet backing track in the introduction please?
Hi Philip, that is a track I made for this video. Cheers!
@@NostalgicExplorer okay! will it be on Bandcamp?
@@philipbanks8002 I will upload it either on Bandcamp or Patreon that I am about to set up.
Great job on the video. One of your best so far. You are able to strike a great balance of the song's history and band,. Recounting what was originally used and using your existing hardware and software to emulate it wonderfully! As one, who loves vintage synths and 80's New Wave music, I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for the kind words and I am glad you enjoyed it! Today it is great to be able to mix new technology with vintage gear, you can definitely do much more. Cheers!
Absolutely beautiful song, and a beautiful recreation, well done. by the way I remember reading somewhere that they used a Prophet 5 on this track.
Thank you so much for the nice words and thanks for the info on the Prophet.
@@NostalgicExplorer You do good work, and some of it is absolutely enlightening, I'm a 'dawless' recorder but to watch others use daw's is good, I just can't get into it I tried several, but guess I never left the 70's/80's ;) hahahahahahahahaha
@@paradoxstate5018😂 I completely understand. I use less and less DAW lately.
...so far the best cover since my subscribtion.
Thanks Gerald!
First single I ever bought when I was 8yrs old for 99p in Woolworths, then I heard the 12inch at a birthday party and was blown away coz I’d never heard an extended version of any songs before 😂
A great song to hear at age 8. I think I was maybe 12 when I hear it for the first time.
Beautifull. Just 1 request sir , can you please include shots of you playing the (main) chords ? I think there are more people like me who want to follow along what you are doing , recreating it (especialy as a beginner) 🙏
Thanks for watching! I recorded that pad in two parts because of the limit of keys on the Digitakt, but I was thinking of posting a longer version of that process because I had to take out a lot of footage to make the video flow better and it will include that part.
how great is this channel. Your videos are perfect. I never get tired of the Linn Drum.
Wow, thanks for the kind words!
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
Was it the Linn that was used for the iconic drum sound that begins on Blue Monday?
Hey, that was the DMX. A great machine!
Another wonderful trip down 80s memory lane. I read somewhere that the digidrum company that made the ROM chips evolved into digidesign and then developed Pro Tools then sold to Avid.
Thank you so much for watching and it was quite impressive to be able to have an affordable machine at the time with those capabilities.
Are those custom blinds? Look useful for light control
No, they are not custom blinds, however I have had them for a long time. Thanks for the compliment!
Used this to write my music as a kid guitar player. It made me learn to play drums to a click and from there I moved from guitar to drums and did many studio recordings being a young drummer who could play to a click.
That's amazing! You got some proper click training there. Cheers
@@NostalgicExplorer made a decent living from those sessions. They use to bring me in after 12 and redo drum tracks as a ghost player. Next day the band members had no clue and just tracked to my drums. Never got album credits but… I got pay checks
@ That's amazing even if you didn't get the credits still pretty cool. Cheers!
Enjoyed this video, apart from when you did that fast forward on the video how long did it actually take you??? Also how far in your list before you do the making of the great wall of sound track by A-ha-The Sun Always Shines on TV?? ☀📺 BTW-will def message on you fb about the Kate Bush thing at some point 👍🏻
Hey Mike, That part took what the song last times 2, because I had to pass it to the tape and then back to Logic Pro. The A-ha song is on my list it just happened that there are so many other suggestions so I am organizing and planning. And please message me on FB. Cheers!
repeat with me: /depésh/ /mashín/ thanks anyway for the channel and the efforts
Eres genial Manuel! Me gusta más Depeche y machín. Saludos!
grande!!
Non-stop Erotic Cabaret is a fantastic album.
It is, many great songs in that album including Say Hello, Wave Goodbye and What
Your voice sound is very considerate (not too LOUD). Thank you 🙏
Thank you! I noticed that I was almost shouting at the beginning of making these videos, so I decided to modulate my voice.
It was in June 1984 when this song first came on the radio and nostalgic explore is right, the baseline was the glue that held a pop song together and it’s a sound that most pop fans were accustomed to at the time. When I first heard When Doves Cry I didn’t like it. I was confused and I ask myself what the hell is Prince experimenting with? no melody, no baseline, of course all the hot chicks loved it, they were forward thinking & I wasn’t, I hear it today and it jams as hard as it did then. Its difficult to hear other songs of the 80s because it sounds typical 80s, very outdated, however When Doves Cry sounds very relevant opposed to songs like “Come on Eileen” or that one hit wonder “Take on Me” by A-ha which sounds very hokey. Prince was truly ahead of his time, and I remember people saying that. Here we are now almost 41 years after its release and it’s a classic jam that can be relevant today. Long lives the Prince. 5:43 5:43
I remember the first time I heard it, and it was definitely very different from the rest of the songs out there, as you mentioned. Those were extreme decisions in a song, but he was absolutely right and resolved to create a song using the toms as a substitute for the bass, which was genius. Thanks for sharing, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Definitely revolutionary. He didn't use any hats as well. Would have never thought to use toms for rhythm like that. He loves to use those claps on the last snare in the drum loop for accent purposes.
What? When was the first time? When did you bite into an apple for the first time?
When Doves Cry never had a bassline, because Prince didn’t feel the song needed it. There was a bassline when the song was played live. Prince used the following: LM-1 Drum Computer Yamaha DX7 Oberheim OB-Xa Your rendition is close to the original, with the LM-1 pattern being spot on. A great job!!
Great piece of information and thank you for the support!
I dont advocate for AI narration, but in this case it would be a LOT better! And the annoying dramatic music didn't help.
🤷🏽
I think he sounds good, AI always makes me think it’s gonna be full of lies or a kid wrote it that gets everything wrong
@@TayWoode It is mostly the SOUND of the AI voice.. it's annoying, because it's fake.
@@MediaBuster sorry yes that’s what I meant too
You don’t need bass on this song, as the toms are tuned to the key of the song and occupy the space and frequency the bass would anyway.
You are absolutely right!
Thank you for posting this. He was a musical genius.
He truly was and thanks for watching!
The first time I saw one of these was when I saw a punk band, The Fast, use one live in 1981. I bought one soon after for $125 and still use it. Thanks for posting!
Those things are little tanks. I am glad you still keep it and use it!
Good tune. Like the overview/history. Thanks.
Thanks for the nice comment!

Really nice to see Soft Cell! Well done! I have a suggestion for a track. Cry Little Sister by Gerard McMann. Love the videos. ❤
You bring memories from when I listened to this song for the first time when watching The Lost Boys, a movie I love to this day with a great soundtrack. That will be a fun song to explore!
@NostalgicExplorer Never grow old. 🦇🖤
Awesome. I had it on 45 single. And I still love it. Thank for sharing your thoughts and story. Keep up the good work. Visage - fade to grey.
Thank you so much for the support! I remember a friend recording Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret on tape-I listened to it so many times! I still have that tape, though it sounds terrible now 😆. Visage is actually on my list, so you’ll definitely hear about it soon. Cheers!
I hear Blondie's - Heart of Glass in there, or some Roxy Music.
Yes, the sound is very similar to the CR-78 which is the one used for Blondie in Heart of Glass, you can see that exploration here: ua-cam.com/video/yq-K9mNVqsM/v-deo.html also Phill Colling "In The Air Tonight" Cheers!
Never ignore Coil’s version of Tainted Love
Never!
She was so different. Beautiful and unique. This remains one of my favourite songs.
A very talented woman pioneering with electronic instruments and samplers. Thanks for watching!
Amazing! Thank you for another great video!
Thank you so much for the support and glad you enjoyed it!
you know the rhythm itself could have easily been programmed into the CR78 don't you? I had one back in the 80's with the programmer and it was easy to program rhythms in.
Yes, the problem is that I do not have the pedal to program the CR78 but I will try it the next time. Not with the original because that is almost the same price as the machine but with a newer one. Cheers!
@@NostalgicExplorer Not criticizing, I think you did an absolutely fantastic job :) as for the synth drum sound, its likely to have been the JHS Drumsynth as these were A LOT cheaper than the Synare 3 at the time, and produced the exact same sounds, I know we had 2 of each. one thing that did surprise me was that it used Synclavier, I honestly thought it was all Analog synths.
THANK YOU! and please do a tutorial on how you mix the drums! or a general tutorial on how you process drum machines. i cant seem to get them right and tried already everything...
Thank you for watching and for sure, I will make a video tutorial soon on how to mix drum machines.
Blimey.. That is impressive!!!! Maybe 4 or 5 bpm faster than the original, but still. That was a phenomenal recreation.
Thank you so much, man! I tried to match it with the original and it might be just 1 bpm faster but maybe that's because I was listening to the song on a record player. Who knows... glad you liked it!
@@NostalgicExplorer I really did, because I know exactly how much hard work goes into recreating these things!
@ I really appreciate your words. Thanks again!
Yes!
I love seeing you tackle these songs and break them down. This is not only entertaining but educational! Great job!
Thanks man, appreciate the support!
