A Way In The Wilderness
Приєднався 15 лют 2022
Our hope with this channel is to capture the peace and tranquility of nature and impart it to the viewer. We also hope to inspire people to get outdoors and experience that peace for themselves.
A big part of spending time outdoors is learning skills that can make it more enjoyable, but also to keep yourself safe. We hope to help in teaching some of these skills as well.
We do live in the city, so we have some plans for urban survival, preparedness, and stealth camping as well.
Last of all, we hope to show different concepts in kit building, showcase different gear, and possibly even do some reviews. We hope you stick around and join us!!!

Sub Zero Camping | What Went Wrong & Why? Important Lessons Learned
This was the coldest temperature I have ever camped or hiked in. -10°F was the low for the area I was in.
The trip started really well. A little ice, but overall, the hike of about a mile was not too bad.
The goal was to test some new gear and push some old gear to the limit. Some mistakes were made on my part, and I ended up having to hike out at around midnight. I learned some very important lessons on this trip, which I discussed at the end of the video.

Consider Yourself DEAD Without This In COLD WEATHER! Part 3 - "Something to sleep in"
Переглядів 12 тис.Місяць тому
The final component to a good cold weather sleep system is something to sleep inside of. Once you're covered underneath something and insulated from the ground, you'll want to have a sleeping bag, quilt, or wool blanket to wrap yourself up in to trap heat. With just one of these components missing, you will be cold. Fire is great, but keeping one burning all night in an emergency is not ideal d...

Haters will hate! But for what you need for you at 5 lbs great setup in a small package!
A tarp a mat, a bag, and bivi, a silk inner and newspaper.
Dang…. That’s a sweet setup!
hi, your emergency shelter is too big and too heavy, I have one that is a bit bigger than a packet of cigarettes and works like a sleeping bag , but I could carry my Camp minima 1sl tent for 1 person that folded is smaller than your folded shelter and is only 1kg !!! who goes for trekking is always looking for portable, good quality and light equipment ! ciao
I camp in winter/snow/storm conditions. I use a hot tent and have my fire within the tent with a stove pipe. This has provided the most fun and comfortable experiences in the dead of winter... and much safer. I highly reccomend you try it unless you are trying to learn how to camp without a fire.
@@mr.corazon4765 That was part of it. Most of my winter weather trips I just sleep next to a long fire. Wanted to see how some gear would perform in that kind of cold. Long fires are a lot of work. Thanks for watching! I definitely want to get a hot tent at some point.
You failed plan and simple alot of other camper stay out.
Nonsenses
Besides a cell foam pad under the inflatable pad which everyone in the comments mentioned you need a double wall tent. The main difference between 3-season tent and all-season tent is that all-season tent has double walls. Double wall does not add any warmth but it prevents the crazy condensation you encountered.
Constructive criticism: Some us watch this to relax! We don’t like a BUNCH of talking.
@@jdeloise6730 I like the no talking style of video myself. I also enjoy videos where there is talking. Gear videos are something I enjoy as well. I will continue to make the asmr style videos with no talking, but I am going to make other content as well. I appreciate your views and your input. 👍✌️
Perhaps use a bivvy big enough to slide the inflatable mattress in also, to create an air pocket, where the side of the mattress isn't in direct contact with cold air, or if you move around at night and your sleeping bag doesn't fully cover the mattress. It doesn't need to be the 'ultimate rainproof' bivvy, as long as it's breathable material. I'd also bring a cell foam mattress in such weather.
Not enough skill and knowledge, good thing to be close to car so you could bail out. Tip, learn before trying this.
@@runawaypeter That's exactly what I was doing. Testing the limits of my gear. I could've stayed out and been a little cold. I would've survived, just been uncomfortable. I stated goin into it that I might not stay out. You can watch all the UA-cam videos and learn some things, but it can't compare to actually getting out and doing the thing. It's funny how many comments I see like this. I specifically asked for advice in the video from people who have more experience in the extreme cold. You give zero advice and nothing to learn from. Thanks for watching!

@@tjellis1479 it's a really cool neck knife! I'll be doing a review on here very soon. Very affordable as well. I hope they get more in stock soon. I might reach out and see when they're available before I release the review.
4 season tent for the 4th season brother. I wouldn't camp up north without a hot tent and a wood burning stove.
@@guadalupeskitchen3734 I was hiking in. Honestly, the only thing I could use as a hot tent is way too heavy for that. I knew going into this that I would be pushing my gear. I would've been totally comfortable had I took gear to sleep next to a fire, which is what I do a lot in the colder months. I will probably invest in a hot tent at some point. Thanks for watching!
Thermarest sleeping pads It doesn't get any better than that....
@@stevenensminger5737 Thought about getting an x therm for a while now. I've heard good things.
Is this a bushcraft outing or is this a promotional video for onewind bivy tent
@@stevenensminger5737 I wouldn't consider this a bushcraft outing. I do collaborate with companies. My approach is to show them in use while I'm on my outings and actually using them.
What is that in the background? A stone fence? One side or t'other would seem to be a good wind break, especially if there's a corner or you could make a corner by moving some rocks. How close to civilization/residences are you?
@@harrymills2770 That is a long stone wall. This patch of woods is only about 5 miles from a town. Farmland scattered around it with some houses. I've used those rocks on other occasions. Thanks for watching!
That’s cool! Nice camp bro
@@Davidg1t1 Thanks!
Very cool! Subd 👍🏼
Its all good learning experience in the end of the day, most important is you safely went back, many people underestimate freezing temperatures but its deadly when something goes wrong and one can't get at least fire started when theres no way back or car wont start up.
Definitely! I did learn some things and hope to use those lessons on the next extreme cold trip. I appreciate that you actually understand that. So many people in comments just want to Monday morning quarterback and try and prop themselves up as though they never had to learn anything. I think leaving extra firewood and the fire going was key in this situation. Sucks that I had to call it, but it is what it is. Like I said in the discussion at the end, I'll never be above learning, getting advice and taking constructive criticism. Really appreciate you watching and taking time to comment. ✌️
@awayinthewilderness4319 I really appreciate your attitude and this video, people should talk more about these experiences as we want to enjoy our stay in nature and not to survive which would mean life threatening situation. Many people watch nice bushcraft videos and then want to replicate it maybe without any prior outdoors knowledge. Most injuries come from underestimating nature and preparation. I've run in to serious issues before like not having enough water or sleeping on a hill in hottest summer day with light sleeping bag and hammock when night temperature dropped to 0°C what a hellish night without any fire starting tool. I always remember Survival Russia when he went many miles to a camping spot and forgot second water bottle, so he just went back as sun was setting. Cheers✌️
Leather gloves for fire …extra foam pad for under your inflatable pad…hot hands chemical heaters for emergency and practice with your gear.. not preaching I’m older and screwed up a few times also had 20 years plus Army . Have fun stay safe.
@@kennethwilson8633 Thank you, my friend! 👍✌️
Just a couple tips from a Canadian who has winter camped in below -35C: have your closed cell foam pad under your Exped, put a wool blanket under your quilt/sleeping bag, and this is the most important part, your quilt or sleeping bag should be rated for temps at least 10 degrees lower than the lowest temp expected overnight.
@Vickyscampingobsession… I had wondered about the use of a closed cell foam pad beneath the sleep system. Such sound advice for anyone here. Very helpful.
@@Vickyscampingobsession 👍 Thanks for the advice!
I camped in Minnesota for December. Temps were @ -20 then. I had 2 layers of tarp; tent; then another 4 layers on floor (folded tarp); 3 in. foam; quilt; down mummy bag. Tent was a one man low ceiling. Shoved into a log jam covered w much leaves and debris. Toasty! And had a Sasquatch experience. Isolated nature preserve @ 3am. Bipedal long gated steps. We had 3 ft of snow. No one was out joy walking. Definitely sounded like a large humanoid moving at a very fast pace. Great vid bro! Thanks for sharing your experience
Cell foam pad under the inflatable pad is mandatory with low temps. That would probably save the night.
Learn some Celsius first
Learn some Fahrenheit
It took some grit to attempt to camp in that weather!!!! Give it to you!!!! 👍

It took a lot of drive and determination to attempt a camp in those temperatures. And you did it with wisdom and humility, which is what got you home safely. In my estimation, that sets a better example for others than any picture perfect camp could have. As Charles Stanley used to say, “We learn more from our valley experiences than from our mountaintops”. Thanks for sharing what you gained with the rest of us.
@@HuntCreekBushcraft Thank you for that! I've heard a lot of great preaching from Charles Stanley. My wife has listened to him since she was a little girl. Looking forward to meeting him in heaven one day. Thanks a lot for the kind words and for taking the time to watch. God bless!

Your So Wrong about reflective foils, It is an absolute Phalacy to believe just because an element is reflective it can generate heat back, When the truth is the outside temperiture is always Colder makes any heat turn to water condensation & ice are the facts. These emergency aids are more for Wind chill factors & keeping snow & rain off to a minimum. Dont Believe Sales Hype that will get You Killed in the Wild through ignorance. Have You Ever Wondered Why Your foil rapped Chicken skin looks uncooked, Thats because there was no inner reflective heat! If There Were the Chicken would be Golden Cooked as if not Foil Covered. It's a Dangerous myth about emergency kit that is only an aid to keep extremities off whilst emergency recovery is in place.
🏴✌ All the best from over the pond.
May as well be dead if you gotta live in that!!
The few times I've had to sleep outdoors in the cold I always made sure I had a big sheet of cardboard underneath me. Saved my life in winter. If you find yourself outdoors in winter make that your first priority.
I like this format; one video-one component of a system. Don’t be discouraged by the naysayers. They are either not listening or are know it alls. Keep up the good work. Can you do a video on “worst case scenario “? No injuries but cold, wind, and rain on the way.
One can make a very decent "debris bed" without the same exposure to ticks & other nasties by snapping a halfway decent (and large enough) poncho - treated with permethrin - closed and stuffing it with leaves & such. Lay on it & compress, and re-stuff until you achieve desired thickness.
@@baronedipiemonte3990 I think the bivy on top accomplished the same thing.
Over, under, & in, it’s simple .
Not good advice for staying warm on a cold night. Or day. Better than nothing tho.
Sleep directly on the ground is cold
@@michelanonyme300 Definitely is. Wouldn't do that. I agree with you
This demonstration was a mixture of trivial things and nonsense. Okay, you have shown a lengthy, wordy standard rigged setup of a tarp that is painted orange on one side and coated like a reflexive blank sheet on the other. So what? If you carry this as an additional item, it would have been much more useful to try out, test and demonstrate how to get additional benefits out of it, like using it as a ground sheet /footprint, or shielding you from thermal cameras, or focusing /directing the heat of a fire. But showing the use of a signal color blank sheet as a signal color blank sheet ...? Well, not really smart, is it?
@@frankyboy1131 perhaps I could have talked about those uses for a high visibility reflective tarp also. The main focus of this video was simply to show a few configurations and talk about a proper sleep system for cold weather. The things that you mentioned are a great way to utilize this piece of gear as well. Thanks for watching! 👍
BE SAFE AND WARM ⛺🫕🛶
What does it weigh? Isn't a light weight tent just as heavy? Looks a more decent option to sleep in to me. At least when it is not too cold.
