- This is the updated version of my mini haversack. The first video I released of this concept got quite a few comments with some great suggestions. In thinking about what people were saying, I decided to just use the comment section to revamp the kit completely. This video details the changes.

I gave up. There are a lot of options and products.
I finally settled on a FILBE sustainment bag. It has room for some basic equipment. Deciding what equipment is hard.
I think we have a basic choice: Urban or The Wild.
“Survival” in a city is drastically different from survival in the woods!
In the city a reliable pocket flashlight, a small SAK and Pepper Spray. Pepper Spray is problematic in that it’s hard to find reliable and effective products! Lots of luck …
Hiking, backpacking - once again, The 5Cs! And here you have decide! The best way to find out what is important and what isn’t is just go out and spend some time outdoors. Take notes. Shelter? Warmth? Food? Water? Knife? Bag? Pack? How much? What?
Remember: Tool or Toy.
The only way to find out is get out and see!

I think the best idea is to have a small haversack. We tend to fill our packs if there is room and the best way to keep weight down is limit the space to carry extra stuff.

I watch you on UA-cam often ! You give good advice and its great that you take vice . But you know what you want and what you need . We all our own paths to take so always fix it the way that works for you .
Thanks so much for the support and the kind words! I really enjoy putting together different kits and I think people who do this type of thing can offer some great advice. This kit in particular I think is far superior to the original version. I definitely think that what works for some person might not work for the next. This kit will probably evolve more still, as I'm always thinking up and trying new things. Thanks for watching!
I used to carry a messenger bag with my edc, which was set up for most survival situations. I finally carry a sling bag for my things in which I can throw in my backpack when I go further outside of civilization. The strain on my shoulders eased as I got older after using my backpack for my edc and survival BOB. Things to add: superglue for wounds, tampon plugs for fire starting or wounds, rope lighter for fire starting and you’ll have char rope as back up, three oz squeeze bottle with isopropyl alcohol for fire and sanitizer, permanent match to be used with isopropyl alcohol, goggles and/or sunglasses for windy sunny days, bandana for covering nose and mouth for sandstorm, gloves, magic candles, large trash bag, and maybe hard candies and/or gum. I know you’ll rotate things around and this won’t be your all go to gear in the following years. I thought I had a decent set up but after watching UA-cam for years and my wife asking me if I had a certain items I know I’ll never have the perfect set up. Sometimes it’s a good thing because it keeps us searching and learning always.
Sounds like a good setup. I've definitely realized that a kit will always change. I love the idea of having a smaller bag that can be tossed in a bigger backpack when you're going further out, as you said. My EDC is a sling bag. I have a video on that if you want to check it out. I like the way you put your kit together. I’m just in the process of redoing my haversack and my ruck sack, got some good ideas here. I have that same cup from Pathfinder, it’s just perfect for the haversack kit

Great kit. I would are a Second space blanket To be used in conjunction with your 1st blanket as shelter and a cover element And you could also add a couple of hand warmers that would be useful to keep you warm. But overall you have a great kit beautiful idea like your videos keep up the great work

You have a nice kit but id throw in a proper rain poncho, 2 50 gallon trash bags and a bandana and a triangle bandage which could be used for anything from bleeds to carrying things. God bless and keep posting.

The Algorithm suggested this video and it's the first time I see your channel. It just happens that I am working on a haversack EDC... because I watched a prophecy some 2 years ago that backpacks would be forbidden in urban areas due to terrorist attacks. I can see that coming with the current scenario. Little pouches and containers have fallen in my hands. Yesterday I was walking my dog to a park and in a street corner there was some trash and in there was a Tequila Patrón shoulder bag! Alcoholic beverage companies give those with purchase of two bottles (they are designed to carry two bottles). Was this a coincidence?😮
I am looking a larger bag however this will allow me to get started and fine tune things.
Your setup should include sea salt and turbinado sugar in plastic tubes and *more* coffee! The medications should be segregated, as well as taking along some udder balm in a small tin. I would exchange the emergeny blanket for a knit cap...I was a military rescue seaman. As for blades, I would just carry a beefy folder, like my 30 year old USA made Camillus lockback hunter and a little keyring knife (found a Swiss Army one in the trash, too!😂).
Other than that, it's up to individual requirements. Good job.🎉
Thanks so much! I hope you get some ideas. Check out my other haversacks. I have some bigger ones that have more shelter. Given the conditions outside a hat and gloves would be on my person. Jacket or on my head and hands. Hope you nail down your kit. Putting together these kits is very fun. ✌️👍
@@awayinthewilderness4319 I will watch your other videos. Blackie Thomas has excellent videos based on a haversack & bedroll for emergency preparedness. That's what 19th Century US Army soldiers carried.
Impressive what you put together. If possible I would add a bandanna and paper handkerchiefs on your person. I also like a small charger for my phone.
A smaller power bank is on my list. (Pocket size) Bandanna is actually in the kit, just forgot to mention. Another one is generally in my back pocket as well. Forgot to mention that as well 🙂 Thanks for watching!
It's a very complete kit, good job. Only thing that comes to mind that I might add would be a write in the rain pad and pencil, and oh yeah one of those mini dude wipes😅

Use a mini m&m container for your candle, in case it some what melts.

I think the kit is pretty much as good as it’s gonna get. This is obviously a smaller sack so it’s hard to fit in too much. I guess the only thing I’d recommend is an extra survival blanket. One as a shelter and one to sleep in/on and those small emergency ponchos. I know you’ll be dressed for the weather but if you ever need it in a survival situation where you’re out there for a couple days, it might rain when it’s something you didn’t plan for. I know they’re pretty thin but something is better than nothing

Glad to see your update. MiniHav1.0 was awesome. Heavy on fire, maybe(debatable), but it's great project and good bit of kit to put together.

Absolutely mate. I've been doing this for about 30 years. I know all the tips, tricks, everything, etc, but at this point I'm observing ones approach, and your approach is good. Fair, humble, and balanced. I'm a trainer in WA, and I'm setting up an event this summer. I'd love it if you could attend, but odds are slim you're in the PNW.
Either way, you've got the headspace right. You can admit failure, make corrections, and your knowledge base is sound. Keep up the good work, and thank you.

I agree. I was once torn between a full tang knife, a high carbon steel thick machete with a 30% sawback, and a hatchet or axe, but I realized that all of that metal just increases weight, and you can split an oak tree in half with a solid belt knife if you know how to make wedges etc.

Great setup but I would add a strong bin liter bag and water purifier tables
I do have some Katadyn tablets in the kit with a Whirlpak bag. Might be hard to tell the size of this kit without seeing it in person. If I tossed in a trash liner I would literally have to remove half or more of the other items. This is a very small haversack. Thanks for watching!

I carry the same tinder on my SAK. I cover my tinder with a small section of plastic drinking straw. It keeps wear from pocket carry to a minimum.

I didn’t see the first video but I would suggest trading out the cheap survival blanket for a SOL HEAT SHEET and get the
one rated for two people so you could huddle and share body heat, maybe 2 of them if you have kids

I would probably swap out the compass and mirror for a more competent compass that has a mirror
Thought about that, but it would take up a lot more room. Suunto sells a mini compass. That's the one I thought about, but it would take a lot more 4eal estate in the bag.
@@awayinthewilderness4319 If your talking about the suunto MCB i probably wouldn't grab that one. The way the hinge is made would make me worry about its longevity. I understand the real estate but its a tool that can keep you from getting in a bad situation or get you out of 1

Immediate Shelter after First Aid is an absolute priority! Shelter element severely lacking in a kit of this size!
Added a small FAK in this updated version. I'm all ears on a better shelter element. I think I could get by in an absolute emergency and I'll obviously be dressed appropriately for the weather, but I definitely agree it's not ideal. Thanks for watching! Do you know of any smaller shelter items?
@@awayinthewilderness4319 the humble poncho is thee best shelter option imho. The best one on the market is made by wilderness innovations. Tell Perry that Michelle sent you and that you want the xtra wide. Add the Sea To Summit 2-person bug net along with a hand-made gum blanket, and you’ve got a reliable and portable shelter system that takes up little space. I’ve camped out with our Bushcraft group with this very Kit - comfortably.

I love micro-kits like these. The ultimate portability that gets the job done efficiently & effectively.
Have you considered Centerline Systems’s Canteen Carriers with a padded strap wrap by them to house your gear? It’ll permit you to have a full size canteen with a couple of cups that’ll increase your capabilities.
I’ve successfully camped out with my GCC for an entire weekend, exclusively out of my carrier and the supplies contained within. The size is similar to your bag but allows me to carry a ton more gear; including a 7x5 tarp plus 8x5 poncho & STS bug net. I’ve also switched to all titanium gear as I kayak camp a lot and the salty air was destroying my S.S. Gear. Even my ferro rod gets eaten up so I’m always keeping backups to switch out .

How do you like that Pathfinder cup, and do you have the canteen for it? I am thinking about getting the set for my Haversack load out. FYI, the Sawyer water filters, do not filter out viruses. But that is where your water purification pills come in handy. That is if you cant boil the water. Good kit by the way. Maybe a coffee filter or three, they are good to filter out the grit and bigger things. Plus they make good fire tinder, Oh, you will need a rubber band or two, too hold the filter over your cup. Just my two cents worth.

@@longrider42 Oh, I forgot to answer that. I haven't used it much as it was in my sling bag that I carry every day. I still keep the canteen itself in that sling bag. It's definitely well built and it's a perfect size for a smaller kit. Pretty straightforward piece of durable gear. The cup is awkward on some stoves and such given the shape, but other than that I have no complaints. They sell great products. 👍

Can you convert a haversack into a concealed carry
Not sure exactly what you mean?
If I wanted to carry a handgun in the sack, could an opening on the side or back of the sack could be created so the weapon could be drawn.
