The AMAZING Subplot To Doctor Who & The Face Of Evil
I came away with the thought of the raiders of the lost ark critique, I.e if indie was not in the film the same outcome would have happened. I feel the doctor was a bit like that in this episode. Also the doctor on earth for a year I got the feeling of Moffat re-doing power of 3. But in a journey over destination approach I enjoyed the ride.
It was OK, I suppose. I decided I would be happy if it wasn't a 'wokefest', I can't face another of those 'debates'. Needless to say the Usual Suspects were shouting at clouds (literally) but I don't watch their channels any more, I can go down Spoons if I want to hear right-wing ranting. In my opinion, this was two good episodes conflated into one meh episode. I'm really tired of "oh, he's dead, oh he's alive, but on another plane of existence/ on a database" it's getting really tedious and repetitive. Ncuti seems to have settled into the role, but the writers need to give this version of the Doctor some more substance and unique quirks, rather than constant blubbing. The plot, such as it was, seemed a bit thin, and padded out with the Anita sequence. Again, good, but an episode in its own right. Overall, I enjoyed it and might even watch it again over New Year, not going out, got that cough myself 😢
This was a pss poor experience, Shallow sentiment where story should have been, cardboard cutouts where characters should have been, all in service of a tiresome catalogue of gimmicks and nudge wink references and bad jokes. And yet again some pleasant enough nobody turned out to be cosmically significant, there wasn't an enemy and the Doctor might as well not have been there at all. Moffat may be getting all self congratulatory about connecting doors but the hotel concept obviously came from his childhood memories of Mr Benn. And for your food to be served instantly the kitchen would have to be 30 mins in the past. They're not even trying anymore and frankly it's annoying. Although just perhaps the Doctor's meddling mistakenly introduces Joy into the plan and she foils it by just being erm nice. But if that's the idea he didn't intend it, surely the others were erm nice enough already, she dies as a result and it isn't made clear enough. Thankfully plasticene followed and saved the day, making a 5mph barge chase thrilling. The Who crew are plainly now just gathered in a cosy circle telling each other how wonderful they all think they are.
I put my thoughts in a reply to another comment, but I just want to say that I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's ill. Been practically bedbound since Boxing Day. Nightmare!
Haven't left the house in days, a bit of a cough and low energy. Lots of viruses are going round. I'm glad I had my flu and covid jabs!
I think Dr Who is starting to run out of steam a bit. No shade on the actors who are doing a bang up job, but the stories are weaker in general. I wonder if part of it is the George Lucas Effect. When the show was in its early days, Powers That Be said no a lot more than they might be doing now
Speaking of Cybermen with accents, I always thought the Cybermen in The Wheel in Space sounded a bit Welsh.

Yes that's one of the symptoms of my virus unfortunately.
CHIMP!! We missed you :) I think part of the point of the episode was the personal relationships, something Moffatt liked exploring. After a second watch, I would float this theory to you for the end of the episode: Joy removed the star seed from the briefcase, thus cutting off Villengard's influence entirely. She (along with the other conciousnesses) chose to become a beacon of hope. Is that the strongest end of an episode ever? Probably not. But I think it is consistent internally. Mostly, I think this was fluff, a Christmas treat with few external or future ramifications. I *did* notice that "mavity" was mentioned again, and I'm wondering if that's going to be addressed in future seasons. Hopefully not as a season finale plot point :/
I think (hope) the mavity thing is just a recurring joke, like "timey-wimey"
There was no year zero as the mathematical idea of zero hadn't been invented when the Julian/ early Christian calender was created. So, 1 BCE, -no year zero, 1CE. Merry Christmas mate I'm rotten with it too.. personally I thought it could have been far worse.
I thought it was brilliant, a really fun adventure with some nice wit and emotion which I think is all you could really ask for at Christmas!
Nicely put. Always great to hear other people enjoying it.🙂
Was there no weekly alien invasion the entire year he stayed in the hotel, he never got in touch with Donna or UNIT. Why cant any alien race just attack the Time hotel and go change history.
It all just felt very tired this year didn't it? I'm not convinced RTD has much new to say within the format of Doctor Who after season 1 but I am absolutely sure Moffat doesn't! It feels like he's been recyling the same tropes, themes, jokes and character archetypes for years now. If I never have to watch another supporting character's consciousness being creepily uploaded to a mainframe after they have been killed off it'll be too soon. Bootstrap paradoxes, bigger on the inside, mother's love metaphysically saving the day, Villengard, the long way around, always took you where you needed to go... Really felt like we'd seen every bit of this before.
Moffat's two episodes in RTD2 have been below average episodes in this era to me. I don't think he's writing 15 very well. In Boom 15 and Ruby felt more like 11 and Clara than themselves, and 15 didn't feel right in this epiaode either. He didn't even feel that much like The Doctor here, to me, which is odd as Gatwa has had a good few Doctor moments so far, right from The Giggle. I really think Moffatt is too stuck in his comfort zone.
Bring out the Moffat haters. Boom was by far the best episode of S1. Joy to Worlds was nice. It was a nice heartfelt story which is what you want at Christmas. Moffats Christmas episodes are far superior to anything RTD ever did
I really dig the idea of each variant of Cybermen (Mondasian, Telosian, Cybus etc) all being a product of the location/era, Cybus is very modern, made of state of the art technology because they came from the modern 21st century, whilst Mondasian is quite literally spare parts and bits and bobs thrown together with duct tape because of the extremely harsh conditions and circumstances of Mondas.
I clearly now need to head over to big finish and add to my collection.
Definitely the most bizarre origin story ever- can't wait for Big Finish to do 'Genesis of the Cybermen' next year
It's a Christmas Chimp! May you proceed in a festive simian manner.
Love the ending. Next installment: PACKER!!! (How many "PACKER!!!!" can be squeezed into one video? Tune in and find out.)
Great video as always, Chimp! Is there anywhere I can see music credits for this one?
Merry Christmas!
I really must purchase this audio adventure asap, it sounds awesome and I look forward to having it and listening to it. I also say that many Big Finish, adventures, are awesome in billions of ways and I have got many of them.
Wow this is really interesting I love how this fleshes out ideas in revenge while putting a amazing spin on new ones and also does still link to stories like last of the cyberman. After you’ve done the cyber wars can we take a look at the after math and a more proper in-depth in to the cyberman spin off series? (Re listening to it now and I am always blown away by how great it is)
There's a Virgin Missed Adventure called The Killing Ground with Revenge Cybermen. It says that due to lack of materials caused by the war, the Cybermen have kept more of their organic parts.
I've said this before but it's important to say. I'm a child of the 80's and grew up with Doctor Who regularly on TV. It was mostly the Baker and McCoy eras and even though I am a massive Sci-fi fan I never connected with the campy tone. I know for some that is part of the enjoyment but it wasn't for me. What I do find genuinely interesting is some of the lore and your channel has been a great way to expand on that.
Did the Cyberleader in Earthshock really die to Adric's gold star though? Really? The Doctor had to shoot him a few times as well. And the one in Silver Nemesis took more than one hit with gold to go down. Also, I love the idea that the Cyberleader from Revenge is literally turning into Kroton from the comics. An evil Kroton. Perhaps Cyberneomorphs having time travel could be next? They've got a stolen timeship in Attack that presumably blows up, then in The Reaping one survivor escapes from the destruction of Telos in a stolen pod, one with Timelord tech inside of it. Then by Silver Nemesis, they've all travelled back to 1988, after travelling back to '85 for Attack of the Cybermen. And that time travelling Cyberfleet is wiped out by the Nemesis statue. So what happened, how'd they get their hands on it, and where did they go after that? Are there still Cybermen left after these stories take place? Because Real Time indicates that there are a few.
I was under the impression that Smutty Thomas was a distant relative of that ever present thread thru Doctor Who, Ibrahim Namin
Yeah the cyber nomads were more biological in action rather than the classics robo zombie I like to think of it as the cyber nomads are more human as they were essentially divided small isolated groups that needed to perform with more independently to survive, essentially making each unit a piece of a cybercontoler rather than a single unit. With this in mind they could coordinate with each other and if they lost the leading unit the others could adapt and fill in. This contrast with the earlier and modern incarnations that were unified on mass so required less independence in there average unit that were coordinated by a more independent controllers/leaders when they needed to adapt to more nuanced situations. This had the downside of if the controller or leader was destroyed they would have to convert someone to fill the role that could take time as seen in the episode were a cybership is under a shopping mall waiting until they found the best candidate to lead them while merely stagnating without orders.
It's interesting that the CD cover depicts Invasion-style Cybermen, which in turn justifies Nick's reworking of the voices (and it's not like they couldn't have done this to the original on it's Blu-Ray release similar to Day of the Daleks). I'm kind of scracthing my head though as to why someone thought the story needed a sassy non-white non-male character grafted into it -- aka lets add "Poochie" to the story to make it hip to the NuWho expectations. Just let the original script sink or swim on its own merits rather than trying to round out the demographic checkboxes.
Doing good work Chimp!
Love a mystery, I would say the mystery is solved, but I imagine there's yet more about this episode. Like the actor who played this master I think, plays someone else later in a future story. But I recall him in a Bill Bunter episode film I saw a while back. I am unable to recall this films name, but I think he played a teacher in an episode. Later, he appeared in Dad's Army as Captain Mannerings bos at the bang in an early era of the series. The intriguing thing is that Arthur Lowe also was to appear in Doctor Who but didn't because of his roles in TV Coray and Dad's Army. There was a roam he might of played a government official in Doctor Who, as a part of an early version of Unit. The teaser was his choice.
I always found it funny how this story gets blasted for the Toymakers costume and racism yet he is wearing the same costume used in Marco Polo and a story which fans gush over and is riddled with black face 😂. You cannot make the hypocrisy up. Of course the old rhyme is a bit unfortunate.
I actually like this story. I remember reading the Target Novel of it as a child and was drawn in. After seeing the surviving episode and the current dvd release I still like it. It's very abstract 😂. I always found season 3 the more enjoyable of the first Doctor as it does cover darker themes. Plus you have Vikki and Steven - as for Dodo...... Well......
The history of the Fendhal or Taren Capel and the Voc robots.
The mystery of The Wheelies continues 😂. I always thought they were a rogue Cybermen fraction.
I've always enjoyed The Wheel in Space - if I recall the audio there is no real music but just unnerving ambient sounds giving the feeling of isolation. The Cybermen design is one of my favourites. Plus the story does rocket along quite quickly. Maybe they don't remember the Cybermen as it's deleted out of their history. Even the woman doctor says to Zoe about the Psych department brain washing their students. Maybe all humans go through this same treatment? As a radical group were causing problems maybe they rejected the brain washing or it failed?
My favourite Dr Who series. I remember it vividly.
So Cybermen are basically the crabs of Dr Who. People keep evolving into cybermen.
Coming back to this video after Big Finish announced that they are gonna do Genesis of the Cybermen with the 5th doctor
Telos IV from KOTOR had better days I see. Being Cyber-converted probably made sure Nihilus couldn't consume them
I always wondered why cybermen had handles on their head.
Leela was a good character also K9!
wholly agree
well written...
