The list of albums that you presented showed a wide range of the punk genre. Two albums that I would recommend for the list are : The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy!! and Husker Du - Zen Arcade. Cool topic. Thanks.

Appropriate that you had a rough week and came home to focus on some of the most cathartic music ever written! I listened to that first Tom Robinson album on UA-cam after you talked about it on your last video and I like it a lot! As for making my own list, I don't know, it's a bit complicated for me. A lot of bands start out as punk and then expand their horizons, so should those later albums be considered punk just because they were originally a punk band? The obvious example is your number two, London Calling. Is it a punk album? My favorite Midnight Oil album is Blue Sky Mining, but I don't think it belongs on a punk album list, if I made one I would have to put Head Injuries even though I don't think it's as good. Same with X, Under the Big Black Sun is their best, but it also starts to move away from the more punky sound of their first two albums, so if I did make a list, I would put Wild Gift instead. So I admire your willingness to wade into the mire. Your top two would be in my top ten albums of all time, so I certainly can't argue!

Thanks so much Chris. I understand and agree with what you're saying. Really kind of hinted at that with Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads - how on earth is that a punk album - they grew way passed it, as did The Clash, Blondie, Pretenders and others. But they did start out that way. But really, a mark of a great band / artist is expanding and doing different things which they did. At the end of the day, really, great music is great music and the "labelling" of punk or anything else genre wise is unimportant - but I guess for videos and conversations like this...a necessity. But really it's just great music. Best, Alan

Cool. Punk ... as you say is difficult to pin down ... The Kinks "You Really Got Me"? ... Neil Young in full grunge mode? [most of which is not awesome [being polite] ... and I like Neil Young] ... Green Day giving it "laldy"? [as we say in Scotland] ... I do like though the broad definition you used of late-ish '70's to early '80's punky, new waye-y tunes [before it all became mainstream pop / rock] ... For me, many of the classic "punk" tunes are one-off belters that sit apart from the rest of the material that a band / artist might put on an album [e.g. Ramones output is "spotty" as you stated] ... hence, in my view granted, the best albums for punk tend to be the one or two compilations that gather together the best tracks. You highlighted the key artists [Pretenders, Talking Heads, Graham Parker [awesome artist], Joe Jackson, etc ... but, great songwriter that he is, I never "got" Elvis Costello .... maybe there still is time] When I used to do week-end DJ-ing, the artists you highlighted and the following would be in my go to punk / new wave pile [i.e. separate to 70's disco, Kool and the Gang, EW&F, Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie et al and the then current Top 40 chart material] ... See what you think .... some "biggies" include The Stranglers, XTC, Boomtown Rats, The Cure ... Altered Images The Boomtown Rats China Crisis The Cure Echo & The Bunnymen Gang of Four Human League [early material] Joy Division Killing Joke The Knack Lene Lovich Magazine Martha & The Muffins The Motors New Order The Police [early material] The Psychedelic Furs Public Image Limited Simple Minds [early material] Siouxsie & The Banshees The Skids The Smiths The Stranglers The Teardrop Explodes Thompson Twins U2 [early material] Ultravox [early material] The Vapors XTC plus pub rockers like Dr. Feelgood, Ian Dury & The Blockheads CMcG aberdeen Scotland

Many of your favorite punk/new wave albums are representative of the best offerings from these two genres. And I think that they are distinct styles, even though many people conflate them. In your video, it makes sense to cover both because several of the bands/artists you featured started out playing punk and morphed into new wave, standard rock or pop rock. Beginning with punk rock, I must state that I think all “true” punk rock performers owe a debt of gratitude to both the pioneering MC 5 and the legendary Stooges. These two proto punk bands were about a full decade ahead of every punk band/artist who emerged in the mid 1970s when punk was officially recognized as a genre. Personally, both bands were too raucous and raw for me. But I appreciate their roles in the development of punk rock. My taste in punk has made The Clash and Patti Smith my favorites in the genre. While I continue to believe that The Clash is the best punk band ever, I lament how decades ago Patti Smith became the darling of much of mainstream society. When I first saw the Patti Smith Group perform, I was standing (sandwiched, to be precise) in front of the tiny and low stage at CBGB in 1975. From that vantage point, I saw Patti spit all over herself and watched the spittle trickle down strands of her hair. (Sorry, if I’m being too graphic, but I think it drives home my point.) Each time she did what seemed to be a demon-possessed dance, I held my breath - fearing she would fall off the stage. Not because she would have gotten hurt. (The stage was too tiny and low for that.) But, rather, because I was directly in front of her and thought she would land on top of me - with all that spittle dripping! Fortunately, she never fell. Fast forward to Patti today: She is polite on talk shows, she sang (despite forgetting lyrics) at the Nobel Prize ceremony honoring Bob Dylan and she has been name dropped in the most positive ways by celebrities who have always played it safe offscreen. When Patti first hit the scene, many were disgusted by her. Now, a big part of the general public showers her with accolades. Go figure. Of course, no discussion about punk rock is complete without mentions of Ramones and Sex Pistols. I haven’t listened to Ramones in a few years, but I like a lot of their faster-than-lightening songs. I saw the exhibit on Ramones years ago at New York’s Queens museum. It was excellent. Moving on to Sex Pistols, “Never Mind the Bollocks” May have been groundbreaking, but I never listen to it and rarely listened to it when it came out. I’m glad you gave a shout out to “Catholic Boy” and “Power in the Darkness.” I very much like both of those LPs. You also mentioned Richard Hell and The Voidoids, about whom I have something to say. I saw them perform at CBGB, and I thought they were forgettable. What wasn’t forgettable was their opening band, The Erasers. The only time I have ever walked out on a band is when The Erasers were playing. That band was so loud that ear pain caused tears to practically explode from my eyes. Never before and never since did that happen to me - someone who saw The Who more than once in its hay day. I have many good punk rock memories from all my many weekend hang outs in the mid 1970s at CBGB, Max’s Kansas City(glam scene in addition to punk scene) and The Mudd Club, among less notorious venues. I can tell you that most of the bands I saw were interesting, at the very least, and the house music usually got everyone to jump around. At those places and in those times, Talking Heads were nearly worshiped by punk bar/club goers. (I guess that’s why the band was not too long ago offered many millions of dollars to do one reunion show. Too bad that Chris and Tina can’t stand David and vice versa. Jerry has never given his opinion, as far as I know.) I do respect your feelings about Talking Heads. To me, however, the band is unique, multi faceted and, most of the time, fun. Although Talking Heads started out as a punk band, it branched out to become so much more. I say the same about Elvis Costello, Blondie, The Jam and, one of my all-time favorites in any genre, Pretenders. I think that Joe Jackson’s early music was new wave. It evolved into various other styles. I’ve liked all the directions in which he took his music.

Great video, thanks. My favourites of your favourites are Costello, The Clash, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, Television and a few of the others that you list. The problem for me is that I only have a relatively small collection compared to you. You have such an amazing collection. I have made a mental note of picking up so many CD's that you have recommended and I will definitely pick them up if I come across them. I'm sure I'd love most of your picks if I'd have ever come across them. I must confess that I don't share your passion for The Pretenders, The Jam or Blondie, I like all of them but tend not to listen to them that much. My youngest son loves The Jam though and my youngest daughter loves Blondie so there you go! You have amazingly open ears so thanks for sharing. Do you have any R&B, Blues or Soul stuff in your collection? I love Albert King, Buddy Guy and all the older blues stuff, I am am also crazy about Stax/Volt particularly 'blue' Stax. Do you have any interest in these areas? Anyway, thanks for the video. 👍

Happy Friday Alan! You are so much more diverse in your musical tastes than me! I realize that from the previous videos I've seen. But nonetheless, there's a lot we DO both like. I have almost none of your picks here, and since we're being honest, most just don't appeal to me at all. I'm happy to say though there are a few of your choices I like: Joe Jackson, some Elvis Costello and Ramones, a little Blondie and Pretenders. And of those bands, I only enjoy the complete albums of Joe Jackson. The rest are pick and choose songs for me, not whole albums. But that's more than I expected to like in a punk themed video. I suppose other than The Ramones though, these would be considered the least punk, eh? Stay safe and healthy and enjoy the weekend! Oh, and yes I know that "people who died" song. I forgot all about that one! 😂

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow

Thanks Grumpy. I imagine big fans of punk will not be impressed by my collection as many will consider it more "new wave" than punk or hardcore punk, so my tastes are a bit limited as well. Diverse but limited I guess. But thanks for watching. I really appreciate your support.

Buying 45 albums that came out in 2015 is nothing to sneeze at, if you ask me. I had to strain my brain to recall five 2015 albums that I listened to more than a couple of times. They are: “Modern Blues;” “Something More Than Free;” “Rattle That Lock;” “Tracker;” and “No Cities to Love.” I can see why you picked “Cass County” as your second favorite LP of 2015. I’ve always thought that Don Henley’s greatest strength as a songwriter is when he focuses on the human condition. For those who like a country music vibe, “Cass County” presents one solid song after another. For those folks, I get how the songs are engaging and memorable. The song credits read like a “Who’s Who” in country music. And the vocal performances by those names are indicative of their respective levels of success in the world of country music. That world, however, with very few exceptions, has never held much appeal to me. (In past videos, you’ve spoken about singers whose vocals annoy you. Well, for me, few vocals are more annoying than those laced with a heavy country twang and:/or southern drawl. Yet, I am not the least bit annoyed by listening to and conversing with someone who speaks with a twang or a drawl. For all I know, my Long Island accent annoys the hell out of them! On recordings, though, twangs and drawls almost never do it for me. I do have a small amount of exceptions, if the music and songwriting strikes me as being outstanding. So, it should come as no surprise that my favorite song on “Cass County” is “Take a Picture of This,” the one on which Don Henley is the only singer.

Thanks for your thorough analysis of Cass County. I bought it when it came out with little expectations, as I'm not a huge Eagles fan or Henley fan (though I do have all their albums). But as you also said, the quality of the songs were just so good, It was a wonderful listen, that I listened to so much 10 years ago. As you also pointed out, if you don't like that country twang, definitely not for you then. When I bought it, I didn't even know that Mick Jagger was on a track (which was shocking to me - I've never seen a Jagger Eagles Henley connection except when The Eagles opened for the Stones in 1975), though that's actually amongst the lesser tracks on the album. Of course, there's always other country albums without the twang...ya know like this years best country / overall album according to the Grammys - Country Carter by Beyonce...lol. but don't get me started, that's a rant for another day.

My problem with yessongs is alan whites drums, not so much what he plays but how his drums sound, so muddy and shitty, compared to bruford's tracks where the snare is so crisp and all those jazzy nuances that alan white just plows over, not slagging alan white, he's great on relayer and drama especially I had a buddy so long ago who loved the good rats, what a blast from the past, they had a great drummer 🤘😝

Yea Joe Franco was the drummer of The Good Rats and he's a fantastic drummer. As for Alan White vs Bill Bruford. Yea they're completely different styles and sounds. Bruford is an extraordinary percussionist. Incredible. Alan White is more of a straight power rock drummer. White brought a completely different style and sound to Yes, and also lots of power. I've learned to love and appreciate both. Yessongs in particular is known for it's muddy sound. The remastered CD I have sounds far superior to the original vinyl, but still very muddy. It's just how it was recorded way back in the day. I've learned to love it, but of course more for the performances and the incredible songs. Can't imagine how great it would be with fantastic sound as well.

@@Timlinmark because I love the Grateful Dead and I have everyone of their albums. But Fare Thee Well was the last time they were ever going to play together again ever. Because of that they were the biggest shows of their time. Their never ending ongoing configurations is Symantics. But the Dead are not alone in milking the fans. I just thought they were beyond this type of thing.

@ I have no problem with The Grateful Dead releasing archive albums every year. I think it's fantastic actually. And the Dead organization and record labels to a terrific job. The issue I have is Jerry Garcia died in 1995. In 1998, surviving members reformed as The Other Ones. They had moderate success for years, so they changed their name (with changing lineups) to The Dead which with the name change drastically increased their popularity. More lineup changes in 2009 and they changed their name to Further. With diminishing returns they called it a day in 2014 and announced the final performance forever for the Grateful Dead offshoots - that's right forever and they did Fare Thee Well in 2015. Because they were supposed to be the grand finale - they were historic shows - the biggest of their time and they brought in Trey to replace Jerry Garcia. A nice way to go out and finally bury The Grateful Dead (and let Jerry rest in peace). But no, because the shows were soooo big, they recruit John Mayer to replace Trey and Jerry and tour up to now as Dead and Company. I always thought the Grateful Dead were above this type of thing. It's no different than The Rolling Stones continuing to tour after Mick Jagger dies and calling it Stones and Company....or Stones.....and yea I think especially after Fare Thee Well where they loudly proclaimed this is it, yea I think its wrong. But hey fans in todays world happily pay huge money to see bands with no original members - so they can dance and celebrate to the songs of their youth by cover bands who use the brand name. The Grateful Dead should've been above this, but they're not. So yea, let the "fans" try to relive something they never probably experienced in the first place and let the "Dead" collect upteen millions on them, something Jerry Garcia, who make no mistake was the leader of The Grateful Dead, never did when he was alive. And I do love The Grateful Dead and saw them in 1977 for Terrapin Station.

@@Timlinmark Thanks so much. I really do appreciate your comments. Clearly I'm in the minority because Dead and Company are now as big as The Grateful Dead were in their heyday. But for me its semantics because they have now been trading on The Grateful Dead name. I've no problem with Weir and Company touring with Mayer and playing Dead music to keep it alive for the fans. That's wonderful. But we live in a musical world of branding. Very few people care or even know, who's in a band. Just the name. There are so many "big" bands touring and do fantastic business but have even no members that were in the band. But "fans" don't care, they want to see the band and hear the music. But they're really tribute bands, not "the" band. I have a real problem with that. And thats what touring under Dead And Company, or The Dead is. And for me, its disrespectfull to long time "real" Grateful Dead fans who were there and love the band. I never want to see The Rolling Stones tour as The Stones, or Stones And Company with just Keith Richards if Mick Jagger died. In fact as much as I love The Who, I don't even think they should be called The Who now, but it's all about branding. I will not see them now. But again I'm in the minority. Thanks so much again - no disrespect to you either. It's all just music anyway and meant for enjoyment.

Interesting selections, as ever, including a couple of albums that passed me by despite being by performers I like (Blackmore's Night & Martin Turner). I need to give Jason Isbell a listen too. I have 67 2015 albums. My favourites are probably these: 10. Magic Pie - King For A Day (Styx/Starcastle infused prog from Norway) 9. Trans Siberian Orchestra - Letters From The Labyrinth (Meat Loaf meets Andrew Lloyd Webber) 8. The Sheepdogs - Future Nostalgia (Canadian Southern rock from the first unsigned band to appear on Rolling Stone's cover) 7. Biters - Electric Blood (back to basics, swaggering rock & roll debut album. Sadly they only made one more before splitting) 6. Leo Sayer - Restless Years (more akin to his early albums rather than his later soul/r&b infused ones) 5. China Sky - II (AOR, with gentle Southern leanings, in the style of 38 Special or the Henry Paul Band) 4. Tradarrr! - Cautionary Tales (folk-rock from the school of Fairport) 3. Alan Doyle - So Let's Go (second solo album from erstwhile Great Big Sea man) 2. Zervas & Pepper - Abstract Heart (new-ish duo from Wales with a real Laurel Canyon vibe) 1. Blitzen Trapper - All Across This Land (feels like a heartfelt homage to all the great roots/heartland artists of the previous forty years without ever descending into pastiche). A few honourables: . Zac Brown Band - Jekyll & Hyde . Cutting Crew - Add To Favourites (Going to see them in concert in a couple of weeks!) . Dawes - All Your Favourite Bands . The Enid - The Bridge . Richie Furay - Hand In Hand . Amy Helm - Didn't It Rain . Don Henley - Cass County . Nordic Giants - A Seance of Dark Delusions . Red Jasper - The Great & Secret Show . Spock's Beard - The Oblivion Particle

I had no idea (though I personally was never a fan). I did buy a Blitzen Trapper album once. Thought it was ok - I gave it to my son, he liked it better. Thanks for sharing.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Yeah, I'd say that Blitzen Trapper are a tad hit & miss albums-wise but the good ones tend to be excellent. Definitely a try-before-you-buy band though. It's interesting where various strands of music take you. Not being big into The Who, I got into Roger Daltrey's solo work (which I do quite like, curiously enough) through his Leo Sayer connection.

@@carlwmpylu That is interesting and for me part of the fun of following music and like you said the threads it can lead to. Like that first Daltrey solo album was Leo Sayer songs. And then Daltrey lead you to The Who. Definitely not typical but interesting. Thanks.

I just finished listening to the Rolling Stones albums from the 80s and this is how I rank them; 1)steel wheels- 4.5/5 2)tattoo you- 4/5 3)undercover- 3/5 4)emotional rescue- 2.5/5 (the album was ok, some good songs some bad songs) 5)dirty work- 0.5/5 ( I really didn’t like this album, it might probably be the worst album I have ever heard along with pink Floyd’s saucerful of secrets) - Srirahul.

Interesting. I appreciate you ranking Steel Wheels so high. For me, it would not be above Tattoo You. But at the time Steel Wheels really was a great release and I love its diversity of styles, especially coming after Dirty Work and Undercover. Thanks for sharing.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Steel wheels was amazing. I was jamming through it the entire time. Dirty work was awful. I was waiting for it to end
