Eno: "Here Come The Warm Jets". Hell yes !! Eno didn't do many solo albums as a straight up rock n roller; IMO this is his best of 'em. Also - 100% agree with the idea of getting actual "released in their lifetime" albums by classic artist who have had umpteen compilations released since their deaths. Alan, I have to tell you how much I enjoy living vicariously through you and your CD purchases. As a transplanted Long Islander, hearing you talk about Looney Tunes makes my heart flutter. There were few things better than browsing through the store and having conversations about music with the staff and other customers - just an incomparable way to spend time absorbing music !! Music shopping online is a poor substitute. You're lucky - or maybe unlucky from a financial standpoint ;) - to be surrounded by so many excellent options to physically browse and purchase CDs. Hopefully you'll find that 'Here Come The Warm Jets' is as great an album as I do. I don't listen to it often but it brings back a lot of fond memories of that era. Also, Tom Waits is phenomenal - especially the early stuff. He definitely becomes even more of an acquired taste on his later albums, especially vocally. But among many others of his catalog, 'Tom Traubert's Blues' from 'Small Change' and 'Grapefruit Moon' from 'Closing Time' are two amazing songs that still give me the chills when I hear them. Anyway, keep up the great work and have a safe and happy New Year !

The box set for the excellent “Teaser and the Firecat” album is beautiful. And as you always seem to do when it comes to music purchases, you got it for a ridiculously low price. I like what I’ve heard by Noel Gallagher and The High Flying Birds. I’m sure that I would love Neil Young’s acoustic performance at Carnegie Hall. Of course, you can’t go wrong with Buddy Holly. As for Tom Waits, I think he belongs on the list of excellent songwriters with lousy singing voices. Like many others on that list, his vocals somehow work for his songs. However, I think the definitive version of what surely is his most well-known song, “Downtown Train,” belongs to Rod Stewart. (I’m sure that Tom agrees, thanks to Rod having made the song a hit.) If you’re going to do a deep dive into Tom Waits, you might want to ease yourself into him by starting with his early recordings when his voice was a lot less gruff and had less accumulation of the effects of heavy cigarette smoking. I had a good chuckle from your friend’s suggestion of drinking whiskey while listening to Tom sing.
Thanks so much. Yea I think for me, Tom Waits will be a slow dive...one toe at a time. His voice really is an acquired taste, that I haven't fully acquired.
He sure did. When I saw Rick Wakeman live a year ago, he told great stories of his sessions, like for Cat and Bowie and how he came up with these great melodic keyboard parts for their songs and got paid just for the session. He wasn't bitter but was funny. His piano work on Morning Has Broken is crucial to the greatness of the song too. Thanks.

Thanks Steve. I think we saw a record breaking amount of movies in the theater this year. We totally didn't care for Nosferatu. I was so looking forward to it too. Not scary, didn't like the casting - we love Willem Defoe, but thought he was miscast for "van helsing". Didn't find Nosferatu scary at all. We made the mistake and re-watching Coppola's Bram Stokers Dracula the night before. Now that's a fantastic vampire movie. I'm so with you on this one.
@ funny you mention Coppola’s film cause that’s what i kept using as an example of bringing something new to table when it comes to this tired, old story that didnt need another retelling. although why Copolla cast Keanu Reeves i’ll never know (well OK i do know - he was bankable.)

On the remaster it's the full 9 minutes with drum solo.
So who goes to the movies and plays scrabble and listens to Cat Stevens on NYE? Alan and his wife do, lol. That Tom Waits and Closing Time are classic. No whiskey required but can't hurt either. A lot of good stuff from that Tom era where he was more of a crooner.
Yea - we had no plans and was gonna be a boring New Years Eve for us...but actually worked out pretty good. Funny but the movies were packed - so go figure. I guess there's many of us doing it now. I think I'll be starting with these easier on the ears Tom Waits albums and see how it goes. Thanks.
i miss At The Movies with Alan. i just saw nosferatu. underwhelmed. didnt really bring anything new to the table. tom waits great songwriter but ya couldnt pay me to listen to him sing. hearing Alan Rosenberg talk about Roxette is about as shocking as when he became a Swifty. And still no Debbie Gibson in the collection?
@ inn be love the Coppola version. Watching it the night before seeing Nosferatu really highlighted how lousy Nosferatu was
