    Hi Alan,
    Looks like you got yourself a beautiful box set there. Seems like a real high quality book and set. Can't say I'm a big fan of Wishbone Ash, although my sister was into prog rock for a while back in the early 70's and I remember she had a couple of albums by them along with Uriah Heep and Hawkwind.
    BTW: I got some really generous cash gifts this Christmas and decided to go nuts and splurge on some holes in my Stones deluxe box sets collection. I've ordered Charlie is my Darlin, Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones, 40th Anniversary of Get Yer Ya Ya's, 50th Anniversary of Satanic Majesties and Blue & Lonesome. I think that covers everything I was missing regarding deluxe box sets. I like to be a completist when it comes to the Stones. I've seen some of your reviews on these sets as well that's kind of encouraged me to get them as well. In the meantime my wife bought me the BR/CD of Welcome To Shepherd's Bush. I've only had time to play the first 4 tracks and it sounds a really good concert, so full of energy. Looking forward to watching the Blu-ray later.
    Anyway Happy New Year to you!!

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Місяць тому +1

      Wow sounds like you're getting some great sets. I haven't gotten the deluxe of Majesties, Beggars or Let It Bleed - I already have the "musical" material but it is a hole in my collection. Cool you're filling up yours. Enjoy - I know you will. I think you'll love the Shepherd's Blu-Ray. Happy New Year. Best, Alan

    • @bobjpgr3683
      @bobjpgr3683 Місяць тому

      Yeah I know what you mean about the musical content, and I know I won’t be getting anything I don’t already have. It’s just nice to get the deluxe treatment with all the packaging. I’m planning on going to see the new Dylan movie this week. I know like me you are a big Dylan fan. The movie looks really good covering my favorite period of Dylan. I still remember the first time I heard the album Highway 61 as a teenager, it blew me away. Still one of my all time favorite albums.
      Oh And I forgot to mention I watched Welcome to Shepherds Bush last night. Good concert, liked them doing Route 66, one of my favorite Stones covers. Could have done without Melody though, one of my least favorite Stones songs. But all in all a good concert.

    Hi again Alan ... gotta love Wishbone Ash .... bought this on its release and the book, slip cover and signed photo make it worth every penny / cent ... for those folk thinking about buying / getting this, it is best to NOT get too excited, or to put any weight in your thought process (re whether to buy or not) on the CD at the end of the book ... for me, it is only of historic interest as the fidelity struggles to be FM quality ... I would suggest thay it's a play or rip once disc (done that) ... I'd be surprised if I ever seriously re-visit the release ... the rest of the package though is fabulous and I'm chuffed to have it in my collection ... I also echo your views of the other books you showed ... all are great. All the best for 2025 .... CMcG Aberdeen Scotland

    really appreciate the work done. GHS update, Listened to the 3rd disc yesterday. They sound fantastic what a gig to be at. To conclude. For the 70 quid it cost, the book (great shots) the posters and of course the music! Worth it. For 179 quid I would be pretty pissed. Great show as always. Cheers Perry

    Hi Alan - very nice collection. OK - so Wishbone Ash, what can I say - they were pretty popular in the early mid 70's, UK & Europe but since then they've been living on their live performances. Albums very patchy and dont sell well !! All their live albums seem to cover pretty much the same old ground, and their new music simply wasnt good enough to sell in sufficient quantities. The classic Ash, Warrior, King Will Come, The Pilgrim, Time Was, Blowin Free - all their live stuff has those songs, which everyone wants to hear. The internal politics were a distraction for sure. They certainly never broke America, they may have headlined but it didnt last very long. In my humble opinion, hey I was there - late 60's early 70's - they were a great live band, but they never captured the excitement of their live shows on record - thats a fact !! and so their albums never sold that well. Cult following - for sure. I quite like them, I have about 6 or 7 of their albums, but they just couldnt break through, like say Jethro Tull did around the world. They just werent in the same class. I'm just saying thats all - they could fill concert halls, but they couldnt sell enough records. To be bluntly honest I think they were over rated. How can they demand those amazing box sets when bands far more popular cant? Anyway Alan - thats my two bobs worth. They had some great songs in the early days, and were a great live band - end of story !! All the best for the New Year and stay safe. CYA Doug

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Місяць тому

      Your two cents Doug are totally valid. I think overall their studio albums (for the non big fan) are fairly spotty - I agree. With that said, I think Argus (the remastered version is better - a little sped up) is literally a perfect album though. Should be amongst the all time greatest classic rock albums. I also think New England is a perfect album (though I'm biased as it was my first WA album and it GRABBED me). I think their "three" classic live albums - Live Dates, Live Dates 2 (I actually think that may be better) and the off shoot USA live album Hot Ash, are absolutely incredible. So yea they could be really special live. I think part of their lack of huge success was the lack of a truly Great lead singer. I really like Martin Turner's voice, but it's not a GREAT lead vocalist voice. I think they kind of covered that deficiency by having different lead vocals on each album and some fine harmonies. They also never got any radio play in the USA - NEVER. And never had that one big classic radio track that other bands had. I've heard Blowin' Free literally once in my whole life on terrestrial rock radio. The later day Andy Powell Wishbone Ash I think suffers from having Andy singing every song on the albums. Very samey. His voice is fine, but not great. Illuminations was a fine later day Wishbone Ash album because it had a great singer - check out the song The Ring or Top Of The World - those deserved to be big big radio songs. But as a big WA fan - over time the "spotty" WA albums become pretty fantastic for me as all music grows over time. I also love the dichotomy of the Ted Turner Mach 1 vs. Laurie Wisefield Mach 2 years. Really no dip in quality. Anyway, my two cents back to you. But in fact, we're kind of in agreement. I just grew to love it more. With that said, when they're "on" and the dual lead guitars with their absolutely stunning melodic lead guitar lines are really happening, music doesn't get any better for me. I "go to heaven". I literally don't think any other band matches them at that. Best, Alan

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow Hi Alan - again all valid comments. They were great live, but overall apart from their classic early albums their output was generally speaking below par. I have Argus, Illuminations, The Millennium collection, New England, and Live On Satellite Radio. Hey - if I see their stuff out in "the wild" I grab it. Happy New Year to you and your family. Keep on rockin. Cya Doug

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Місяць тому +1

      I also like Uriah Heep - but they are completely different bands and completely different sounding. Uriah Heep used to be called the poor man's Deep Purple. Though I don't agree with that and in fact I listen to Heep more than Purple - that is a much better comparison as Heep is very similar to classic Purple. Wishbone Ash sounds nothing like Heep. Ash is all guitars. Heep has lots of Hammond and keyboards too.

    The Wishbone Ash book is magnificent! It’s one more example of why Madfish is synonymous with elegant coffee table books. While dual guitars were originated by The Allman Brothers Band on its southern blues-rock debut album in 1969, that two guitar model on Wishbone Ash’s first album a year later was the hard rock template for bands including Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. (As you know, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s southern rock style fed off The Allman Brothers Band.) I’m still waiting for a sensible answer to this question: Why did Wishbone Ash never move up from cult status to become a major league band like Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest? To me, Wishbone Ash runs rings around the aforementioned three bands (and many others). Of course, that’s just my perception based on my ears and feelings. Everyone processes music differently. And so it goes…

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Місяць тому +1

      Yes - I'm so with you. My feeling overall, here in the US, radio play was crucial and to this day, in my whole life, I've heard Wishbone Ash ONCE on terrestrial radio - and that's over 50 years. Also they never had a hit single or a hit radio single like those bands. That song or two that everyone knows whether you like the band or not. The third factor I think, is that their achille's heel was they never had a "great" singer. Personally I like Martin Turner's vocals and on their classic albums they had different lead vocals on different songs, so it worked fine for me. Also their harmonies often sounded really great. so in a way, this "covered" up the lack of a truly great singer. In fact the problem I have with the later day Andy Powell version (and yes I have everyone of their albums - so I'm still a massive fan...before anyone attacks me) is that Andy sings every song and his voice is just so samey over the course of the full albums now, that it doesn't maintain the interest and intensity of those classic years. Some later day albums like Illuminations had a great singer in Tony Kishman which really elevated the album. Anyway I lost track, but I'm sure you get my point. But for me, the lyrical guitar interplay has never been bettered by Wishbone Ash. It takes me to another musical level and as you said, these other more popular bands aren't close. Best, Alan
