Welcome to my channel, dedicated to flexwing microlight flying in the UK.
Join me as I fly both on my own and with friends to visit amazing places and and see incredible sights. I love visiting new airfields and particularly enjoy using my aircraft to go camping of "Flamping" as we like to call it.
I do all of my own airframe and engine maintenance and while I'm no expert, I have picked up a lot of tips along the way which I will share with you. They do say if you become a microlight pilot, you also become a mechanic!!
I also like to challenge myself and do crazy things like race my microlight around a race track and switch my engine off at 3000ft to see how long I can stay in the air!
I also publish a monthly roundup of microlight related news and events.
If that sounds like the sort of thing you want to see, then please subscribe to the channel, it would be great to have you along for the ride.

Can a Microlight Pilot Land a 737?
Something completely different for this one. Can a flexwing microlight pilot fly a jet airliner? It can't be all that different can it??

Saying Goodbye to my Microlight / Ultralight aircraft.
Ten years ago I did it with Cathy pacific 737 simulator. It was amazing I was buzzing for days after
Looks great Paul, a good experience 👍👍👍
It was a real eye opener. Definitely a good day out. 👍
I enjoy your thoroughness. Very clear.
@@butchgeagan9768 Thankyou. Glad you enjoyed it. Hope it was helpful. 👍
Fantastic video Paul I'm thinking of learning to fly microlights it's just taking that first step lol I work on a farm I've got a 300 meter strip and hanger if I want ..love your vids.
I remember when I took the first step. I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I’d love to have my own strip and hanger. Maybe when I win the lottery. Thanks for your comments. 👍
Looks like a cracking day out mate - I'd love to have a go at that. Very enjoyable to watch. 👍😁
Mate, it was a cracking day out. It’s the ultimate aviation geek toy. I need one at home!
@@paulieb796 I got properly tempted down that route about 20 years ago but thankfully stopped the habit just after buying rudder pedals for my PC. I escaped full geekage by the skin of my teeth. 🤣
Why are the rudder pedals "backwards"?
The foot pedals on a flexwing trike like the one I normally fly operate in the opposite sense to a conventional aircraft. So for example, right foot down on my aircraft causes the nose to go to the left whereas right foot down in a conventional aircraft causes the nose to turn to the right. It takes some getting used to!
Please post the whole video with close ups of the instruments.
A few people have asked for this so I will do. 👍
I really liked it but I would love to see the unedited video since. I think most people who watched this video want to see that too.
I will do. 👍
I had a go in the 737 for my 59th. It was somewhere near Rochdale at the time. The simulator was so good that some airlines certified it for co pilots continuation training. He got me to do the Hong Kong landing too. I was slightly off centre line. Next he built the Vulcan simulator. That was brilliant. Even smelled like an aircraft should. I've passed a couple of people your UA-cam channel details. I think your cost to learn video is worth its weight in gold.
Thank Simon. 👍
Nice one again 😃
Thank you Andy. I had a lot of fun making this one. I was like a big kid playing with a very cool toy. 👍
The unedited version would be an interesting watch Paul!
Yup. Had a few requests so will have to post the full session. Bring coffee!!
Wow. That was brilliant Paul. You looked totally in control. Glad you had a great time.
Cheers mate. What a cool toy. I could fit one in our living room!!
Absolutely a microlight pilot can land a 737. Heck, you can land anything. Whether you can walk away from that landing is the big question!🤣
Didn’t get a chance to stall it though!!
@@paulieb796 haaaaaa!!! I see what you did there! And I was going to ask what the stall characteristics were on a 737….🤣
What a great job you did. Lots of fun congrats. I am sure the airlines will be calling you soon.
I very much doubt it! I had a great time though and it was a real eye opener. 👍
👍
In my previous job with a UK airline I was the company auditor for the flight simulator centre. I had the opportunity to fly two variants of the 737 and the 757 full motion simulators and I can totally echo your thoughts. Real flying is much more fun. Kind of glad I didn't do it for a job now.
I always wanted to be an airline pilot but It’s true what they say. You should never meet your heroes. I’d rather go for a bumble in my microlight that fly a jet airliner.
That looked like a lot of fun.
It was. I need to ask Mrs B if I can have one!!
Nice video, Paul thoroughly enjoys every vlog you make. Keep up the great work. You should try Soleys Farm, Ripple, Deal Kent. Terry from shortfield did a video of his trip. It is the home of the famous Kentish ice cream in over 14 flavours. They also do a mean breakfast, pub on site, and a campsite. The runway is interesting and cuts over the campsite. Take care
I remember that video from Terry. A long way for me to go for a bacon butty though!!
A solstice is the time when the Sun reaches its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. Two solstices occur annually, around June 20-22 and December 20-22. In many countries, the seasons of the year are defined by reference to the solstices and the equinoxes. Basically the Solstice Point is the time on the date (twice each year) at which the sun reaches its maximum or minimum declination, marked by the longest and shortest days.
Cheap primer bulbs either split or rot out, I wonder if its E10 fuel ?
I think you’re right on both counts. That’s why I use the Polini primer bulbs which do seem to be better quality that the cheaper bulbs you can buy from Amazon. I also avoid using E10 fuel. 👍
Brill vid, Paul. In the spirit of full disclosure I did watch Giles's vid first, but yours was ... ! 😆 Great to see you both showing what fun flying can be. I'm looking forward to seeing more adventures 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Kev. Plenty more adventures planned. 👍
Another question is the nine rated as an ultra lite or a lite sport in US? I had thought ultralit and in US no license required and I don’t think it has to be regestered. Not positive about registration.
I’m UK based so not overly familiar with US regulations, but I believe that the NiNE meets FAR 103 regulations so is classed as an ultralight and therefore no license required. Not sure what registration requirements are. Leave it with me and I’ll try and get an answer for you. 👍
@@paulieb796 what is the weight of your aircraft and are you satisfied with the engine you are using ?
Just had confirmation from the US distributor of the Flylight NiNE (Blue Collar Aviation). The NiNE does not need to be registered. 👍
@@paulieb796 I watched one of your past videos where you put a wing up from storage. Thought that was another wing am I right? Is the nine easier to fold back and could you show that on a video. Or was I wrong and that was the nine wing you showed? And by the way thanks for answering my question
@@berniebrown9115 no problem answering questions. The rigging Video I previously uploaded was for an Aeros Fox 13TL wing. The rigging procedure for the NiNE wing is very similar and takes about the same amount of time. Very quick and easy to rig. I might need to do a separate NiNE rigging video. 👍
Giles sent me your way and really enjoyed . Congrats on the nine. One question please. I have the perfect place with my 12 acres but my barn only has a 20 ft opening. How much trouble to swivel or remove a wing ect🎉
You don’t need to remove the wing for storage. It folds back easily enough while remaining in the trike and when folded back, the trike will fit through a 4ft gap. 👍
Brilliant Paul. Absolutely loved this one. Fantastic Ariel footage. Really pleased you’ve got some sponsorship now. You’ll be running your own airline soon. See you soon. Work just isn’t the same. K
Don’t think I’ll be giving up the day job just yet! 👍
20th June 2024 was a memorable evening indeed. My instructor took my avatar shot at around 21:45, just before I landed from my GST. 😊
Wow. Not only flying the solstice but choosing that day to pass your GST. Definitely a day to remember. Congratulations 🙌
Another great video! Really enjoying the content, thanks for bringing us along.
Thankyou. I’ve got lots of content recorded. I need to pull my finger out and start editing!
❤ I like to fly
Me too. 👍
That sky as the sun was setting looked amazing Paul and in crisp clear 4k. Appreciate the great video and well done on the sponsorship, you're getting noticed. 👍
Thanks Terry. I’ve always been busy (or away) on the Solstice so it was nice to finally fly it. A moonlit landing felt very surreal. 👍
Another very enjoyable watch that really celebrates the freedom and blissful adventure that these aircraft bring. The solstice theme just brings that extra bit of magic. Nice. 👍😎
Yeah, but no BBQ after this one and I had to buy my own beer 😉
What a lovely evening Paul. Yet again beautiful scenery. 👍👍
It was one of those flights that was just a bit special. I’ve been meaning to fly on the solstice ever since I started flying. Glad I finally managed it. 👍
I used Quiz Aero too. I also recommend them to students I talk with
I liked the idea of being able to study for the exams whenever I had a spare 10-15 minutes and the QuizAero courses are a fraction of the price of ground school and the textbooks (which are out of date as soon as they are published). Being able to learn in your own time and at your own pace sold it to me. 👍
That was a great flight. Thanks for taking us along. What about putting a strobe light on your machine. Thanks.
I am looking at adding some lights. The wing tips on the new wing give a perfect mounting point for something sparkly. Watch this space. 👍
Paul, you're inspirational. The training course looks cheaper than buying the books. Summer solstice - I remember reading somewhere about an astronomer in Glasgow (?) Looking through a large telescope waiting for a particular star to get directly over head. I could be way off but that's all I remember.
Nah mate. Getting over a double hip operation and training to climb a mountain is inspirational. 👏👏👏
@paulieb796 While I'm inspiring others, you are inspiring me. Did my first one mile walk yesterday. It was gard work, a slog all the way, plenty of rest stops, but I did it. You keep on showing me how wonderful flying is. Cheers.
That was an amazing flight. Really enjoyed seeing your perspective.
One of those flights I’ll remember. You up for the winter solstice? 21st December. 🥶🥶🥶
@@paulieb796 I might be at home by then
Oooh that was awesome, brilliant views, what an experience
Thought you’d like that one. I know you do like a sunset. 👍
What a fantastic flight. Bet you don’t do the winter solstice!
21st December. It’s already in my diary. 👍
I wonder if full size pilots make good model flying pilots and vice versa?
No, ‘cos they won’t fit in the tiny cockpits!!
Although you could attach numerous models to a chair and off you go.
At 1:53 I've never seen so much malt vinegar on sale. They must do a roaring trade there on chips to sell that much.
Never coming round yours for chips!
@@paulieb796 I'll buy extra vinegar, gives the chips a bit of rev.
Are there any updates on the IMC proposals?
Not yet. The consultation period doesn’t end until 16th July. 👍
Hi Paul, This is why Drone Pilots are getting a bad name !!! in Scotland we have Muppets like this !!!! ua-cam.com/video/nQbkvX60Ovo/v-deo.html his videos are just BAD PRESS !!!!
Turn the engine off! Now you have a Hangglider! All you have to do is turn high onto base leg, Have a longerbase leg. Then still with good hight on turn onto final leg useing the turn to get at the right hight. Bingo, your down safe & sound.
I think the wing actually flies nicer when you turn the engine off!
Looks like it was an awesome day out. 👏
It was!
It looked a bit soggy, but the Gyro display looked amazing.
Witchcraft mate!
It was quite a demo. I think he’d done it before!!
@@paulieb796 I was thinking that, or he'd just completely lost control making it look like a display, only to find the cockpit swimming in adrenaline juice.
Pity about the wet but it looked like an awesome day out. On my bucket list for next year.
Apparently I’ve heard that next year might be the last so don’t miss out. 👍
Couldn’t go this year but went last year and it was epic. Would love to fly there but a bit of a stretch for the Peabee from Boston.
Yeah you'd need to go via Bangor Maine, Newfoundland, Iceland and into the Northern fringes of Scotland. Bit cold I reckon as well.
Bit wet this year but a very enjoyable few days at the show. Weston park is one of the best shows on the calendar, I never miss it ❤
