    Thanks for the mention Paul, on further review it looks like the fuel (E10) sitting in it over winter caused it to deteriorate from the inside out so would have been hard to spot before takeoff. No harm done though and lesson learned.

      Same thing happened to be though not bad enough to let fuel leak out, just air to leak in. Same end result though with the engine quoting. I only use E5 for that reason. 👍

    Hi Paul
    The flex wing category is in crisis. I live in Victoria Australia, to get things in perspective you could fit the uk and all the islands in to Victoria and still be able to swim a cat. As it stands at the moment we only have 2 instructors and one is retiring and the other will only do BFR (biennial flight
    review). And now that airborne have stopped trading trikes are so cheap, cheaper than a sub 70 in some cases. Who knows what the future holds for the sport.

      That sounds pretty dire. I guess we are spoiled in the UK. You are never more than an hour away from flying school and even though the UK weather means instructing can’t provide a reliable income, we still have new instructors qualifying each year (8 last year). I don’t know the solution to the problems you describe. 😧

      @@paulieb796 If you or anyone know of flex instructors down South East England please let me know as there are none I'm aware of! So it's 1:30 hrs minimum from where I live (2+ hrs when the M25 is inevitably stuffed). It's getting so bad I might have to give up after 30+ hrs, which would be a terrible waste of time and money :-(

    Great update Paul. Several people have mentioned, druelled over, the Delta Jet, what is it that makes it so desirable? Maybe a video for the future

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  3 місяці тому +1

      It’s just flexwing porn! And it’s made in the UK (or at least the trike is). It’s a hugely capable machine and the option of an engine other than a Rotax makes a refreshing and cheaper change. 👍

    I had a similar video planned on the costs of flying - however it's still on the back burner as I worry it may put people off rather than encourage them 😂 I reckon if folk want to learn to fly, they'll figure out a way that suits their pocket, and if they knew up front the costs, would they start?? just my worry!!

      I think some people might be surprised at how affordable it can be especially compared with other licensed forms of aviation. Cheaper still if you go down the sub 70 route. 👍

    Cheap primer bulbs either split or rot out, I wonder if its E10 fuel ?

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  Місяць тому

      I think you’re right on both counts. That’s why I use the Polini primer bulbs which do seem to be better quality that the cheaper bulbs you can buy from Amazon. I also avoid using E10 fuel. 👍

    Paul, You mentioned the perceived decline in Flexwings, but as you well know Sub70's are becoming the most popular sector in Flexwing Flying.....You ask if there is any way of knowing how many Sub70 Flexwings are actually in the UK? For many a year I have suggested that there should be a Register of Sub70 Aircraft..... I am not saying that every Sub70 should be CAA Registered on the G-info System but as your question highlights " We don't have a clue how many Sub70's are operated in the UK? " The BHPA or BMAA could quite easily have a Stand Alone Registry System that logs the details of every Sub70..... it isn't Rocket Science to set it up, it is almost as simple as you being registered as PB796 ( * I know you are now CAA Registered* but you should get my theory ) & any other Peabee operator picking another 3 numeral in the PB000-PB999 allocation..... To follow suit any Ace Aviation Sub70 Operator could pick any 3 numeral in the AA000-AA999 allocation & so on with any other Sub70 Manufacturer picking 2 letters & 3 numerals for their Sub70 Types..... I have even thought of the Homebuilt Sub70's could be allocated to the HB000-HB999 allocation.
    I get the impression that the Sub70 Brigade want to 'secretly' Fly Under The Radar & not be accountable by having any form of Registry or Records of Sub70 ownership attached to them !!! I guess the Sub70 Brigade look upon any form of Registry or Records as the start of sliding down the Regulatory Slippery Slope, it would actually be the complete opposite of that & I strongly believe that it would be highly beneficial to the Sub70 Owners to have such Records in place. I could quite easily cite many reasons for Registry or Records to be put in place, but it would make this post into a JK Rowling length Novel.
    I believe that either the BHPA or BMAA should collate Registry or Records of all Sub70 aircraft, but if they didn't want to..... I would even set up a Registry or Records System myself if it got the support of the Sub70 Owners & Operators.
    Certainly Food For Thought.

      @paulieb796  3 місяці тому +1

      Hmmmm. I can see both pros and cons. I’m firmly on the fence on the need for a register of Sub 70. Definitely a conversation starter though. I will probably reference this topic in next months video. 👍
