I wonder if it would be lighter with the wing tips. Thanks for posting... I think all us pilots that fly these trikes are excited about the wing.

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  Рік тому +1

      I don’t think the wing was any stiffer in roll than the Fox 13TL. I just felt a little stiffer in roll compared to the feel in pitch which is super light. The wing I flew was a development wing. I think the production wings are going to be vented which should lighten the roll feel. 👍

      @stone8597 Рік тому +1

      @@paulieb796 I understand what you're saying about roll compared to pitch. What is "venting"? Sounds interesting. Thanks for posting, and you great description about how the wing flies.

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  Рік тому +1

      @@stone8597 the Nine wing is a double surface wing which is what makes it so efficient. A vent is a small area on the under surface of the wing which allows air inside the wing (ie some sort of meshed area). The idea is the vent should lesson the force needed to initiate a roll. That’s my understanding anyway. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’ve got it wrong. 👍

      @@paulieb796 Wow. Thanks for the great explanation. I'm really trying to learn everything I can about this wing. I have an Aeros ANT (Polini and Fox 13TL) and fly it with the pod that Aeros sells. The pod is beautiful but offers little in the way of wind protection for your upper body, and at higher speeds this could be annoying. I reached out to Aeros several weeks ago and ask if there was anything they could do. Well, a couple days ago they emailed me that they are working on a windshield design...they even sent a couple of photos. They're testing it to see if it will give the needed protection. Honestly, I was quite impressed with their responsiveness. Anyway, if more wind protection is offered for my trike it sort of takes away that excuse.

      Hi there. I put your question to Ben Ashman who told me :
      It is possible to order the Nine with a laminate cloth leading edge. The only downside is that it will stall at a higher speed in the presence of rain. The laminate cloth also can make the handling heavier in roll.

      Nigel, I was in exactly the same position as you about 10yrs ago. I’d flown RC stuff then tried to up the immersion by flying FPV. Ultimately I decided I needed to get my feet off the ground and started with paramotoring. My only regret is not doing it sooner. In terms of costs, it can be as low or as high as you want it to be. I would say the cost to me is about the same as the cost of running a second car. It is surprisingly affordable. Find your nearest microlight site and pop along for a look. @paulieb796 Whilst I am really enjoying watching your videos : I am noticing that you have an uncanny fixation with Groundspeed figures 🤭
    Maybe I am noticing it because I have an uncanny fixation with Airspeed figures because Airspeed measures an airplane's speed relative to the surrounding air, while ground speed measures its speed over the ground, factoring in wind speed.
    A strong tailwind can increase an aircraft's ground speed beyond its airspeed & A strong headwind can decrease an aircraft's ground speed conversely below its airspeed.
    Being rather pernickety, Airspeed doesn't just affect airplanes. It also affects our vehicles on the ground. As a study published in 2013 in the International Journal of Energy and Environmental Engineering describes, a car's airspeed on the highway is what really determines its fuel efficiency, rather than ground speed or the speedometer reading.
    Now here is an Interesting Groundspeed fact : A kite has a ground speed of 0 miles per hour, because you're holding it on the end of a line of string. But since it moves in the air, it has an airspeed that's equal to the speed of the wind.
    Where this fact gets interesting is : In the video you say you had a Groundspeed of 100mph so I am guessing you had an approx Airspeed of 65mph with a 35mph tailwind component which conversely would be still be an approx Airspeed of 65mph with a 35mph headwind component giving you a Groundspeed of 30mph. So with my GA Head on I am really struggling to get to grips with why it isn't mandatory to have an ASI on a Sub70/SSDR Flexwing?
    It brings me back to the point I made in your other excellent video about Airspeed vs Groundspeed whilst you were flying your own 'NINE'
    Maybe I am too reliant on having an ASI in anything I fly, but even with an ASI I have been caught out once by referencing groundspeed as opposed to what the ASI was telling me.
    The actual phrase I was taught is, “Airspeed is life. Altitude is insurance.” The phrase is an old aviation mantra and memory aid for all pilots. It is not just for fighter pilots. Airspeed is critical in all phases of flight. Altitude can be turned into both speed and time aloft if you're just bringing a gliding plane to an emergency off-field landing. Altitude can also provide the time (and often airspeed) needed to recover from an unusual attitude or a stall. Planes never crash into thin air. Being close to the ground is usually the most dangerous part of any flight so being able to gauge your airspeed accurately is potentially a lifesaver .

  • @blue_beephang-glider5417
    @blue_beephang-glider5417 Рік тому +2

    Speed is overrated. You see less of the view, make more noise, work harder, can land in less places and burn more fuel.
    I'm pretty sure these things are never used for business trips 🤔?

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  Рік тому

      I take your point, but if I want to fly to an airfield 100miles away, I think I’d rather travel at 60mph cruise than 38mph cruise for marginally more fuel burn. I do agree though that low and slow does have its place. 👍
