    This was a special flight to be a part of with no less than 7 Flylight trikes dropping into Otherton for breakfast before departing for Darley Moor Airfield. It must have been a proud moment for the aircraft designer Ben Ashman who was amongst us to see so many of his aircraft flying together.

    That’s an amazing number of Flylight craft up at once! Thanks for the vid Paulie! Was Mark flying his Raptor?

      I don’t think I’ve seen so many Flylight trikes in the air at one time. I had flown with 4 others at Marks wedding reception. Mark was in his Raptor. 👍

    Paul, can you speak to how you handle refueling the BivvyBee when landing away. I assume you carry oil with you with a measuring cup. How do make sure your oil gets adequately mixed with the fuel? I would assume just adding oil to the petrol tank as you add petrol would not guarantee sufficient mixing, but could be wrong. Is the petrol tank removable where it can be shaken to mix the oil? Do you carry a collapsible container to pre-mix oil and fuel before placing in the BivvyBee? Might be over-thinking this, but was always curious.

    • @GolfFoxtrot22
      @GolfFoxtrot22 10 місяців тому

      I have the same tank in my single seat aircraft. The tank can hold nearly 25 litres so 4 hours of flying, more duration in Paul's BivviBee as he burns less per hour. If more fuel is required we normally preplan a fuel pickup and mix the fuel with the oil that we can bring with us. You are not over thinking it, it's a valid question.

      David. That is a very good question. I am thinking of doing a Q&A video (something I can film when the weather is rubbish) and if you don’t mind, I will include this question and explain how I do this on the video. 👍

    So, I gather insurance is a legal requirement to fly sub 70, so may I ask how much insurance costs?

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  8 місяців тому

      Yes, 3rd party insurance is a requirement. I get mine through the BHPA (British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association) which is currently £164 per year.

    Sorry, but I have a million questions. I currently have a paramotor but due to a bad back I think I want one of these instead. However, their website kind of sucks and they really need to update it with the new models.
    What do you think of the Bivvybee over the Peabee? These are the two of the three trikes I'm considering and I just can't decide.
    Why does the Bivvy lift more than the PB? I'm not a big guy but I like the thought of being able to fly with more cargo although I don't know if it's necessary.
    I'm guessing it's a different wing? They have three trikes do they all have different wings? Which is more "fun" in your eyes... the PB, Bivvy or Adam wing? Which is slower and which is faster?
    How well does the bivvy wing keep up or not keep up with the pb and Adam wings and how do they perform (ie. with power, gliding with no power, maneuverability, climb, etc) compared to each other?
    The website is not showing the new nine. (or the raptor for that matter) and they don't do a very good job of explaining the differences and why I would want one over the others.
    Could the new nine trike be flown with your Bivvy wing or a PB wing? Because I've been thinking about ordering a nine with both a nine wing for touring with other pilots and a slow easy fun flying wing for training and having fun around the home base. I just don't know if it's possible or practical. I'm really confused and just can't decide what I want or need. Maybe there is a video I'm not finding that already explains all this?

      Wow, a lot of questions. Right I’ll do my best. First, you are correct in that the BivvyBee is capable of carrying more than the PeaBee because of the wing. The BivvyBee has a Fox13tl wing which can carry about 50kg more than the fix13t fitted to a PeaBee. Other advantages of the BivvyBee wing is that it is easier and quicker to rig as the solid struts mean the wing can be folded back without the need for any additional wing fold supports and there is no king post to worry about. The disadvantage of course of the BivvyBee (and the NiNe) is that it is not sub 70 so requires a license to fly. In terms of performance, I have to say that I have not personally flown a PeaBee or Adam wing but I have flown alongside both. My BivvyBee wing is about 8mph slower than the Adam wing although it could be trimmed to fly a bit quicker. I have however been able to keep up with Adam’s and PeaBees although flying quicker does need some effort to keep the bar pulled in. Glide performance seems to be about the same. My BivvyBee massively outclimbs Giles PeaBee but that is more down to having a more powerful engine. Personally, I don’t see the need to have a Nine wing and another slower wing (I’m selling my BivbyBee wing). The Nine flies really well slowly with very minimal effort so is perfectly capable of flying alongside slower wings and local bimbling. You probably could put a PeaBee wing on a Nine trike but the extra weight of the engine would leave very little left for fuel. The Nine wing is capable of carrying even more weight than the BivvyBee wing and with the extra speed will be an even more capable touring machine than the BivvyBee. All just my opinion of course. Hope that helps. 👍

      @b796 It does massively help. Thank you so much! Between you and Giles, you both have been really awesome and so helpful answering my questions and helping me understand these things better. I only saw hang gliders during the two weeks I took my paragliding lessons and I know nothing about them. Nothing other than it looked scary watching the guys flying around hanging from a string.
      It really sounds like the Nine is the way to go and almost makes the others obsolete if you're not counting license requirements... at least in the UK. Here in the US we don't have sub70 but I think everything on the Nine is FAA part 103 compliant except the speed and possibly the fuel quantity. I'm pretty sure, from the sound of it and watching you fly it, I would need a light sport license to fly the Nine wing.
      Is the nine beginner friendly? Or would a beginner be OK once they had training?
      Sorry. I'll stop asking questions after this, I promise. At least for today. Or I'll go bother Giles again. I came over here because I thought I'd give him a break. 😄
      Are these just basic hang glider wings or is there a difference between powered and non-powered wings? Can you use ANY wing as long as the all up weight rating on the wing is within range? Meaning, I could put a Wills Wing or something else rated for up to 300kg on a powered trike? I'm guessing you can't thermal on a Nine wing and would need something with more surface area?
      Again, I'm so sorry if I'm annoying you with all the questions.
      I just really wish Ben and the guys at Flylight would update their website with the new models and the specs... and add the "click here" downloadable price list for the bivvybee like the Adam and PB have... and maybe list all the same list of specs for the different models. One model might show it's all up weight but not it's load capacity and the others might only show a load capacity without showing an all up weight. Some will show speed or climb rate or whatever else and the others won't show it. None of them have the same list of specs which makes it really hard to compare them with each other and see where the differences are.

    • @paulieb796
      @paulieb796  6 місяців тому

      @@TruthHurts2u I do believe the Nine is part 103 compliant. In terms of it being beginner friendly, it is a higher performance wing than the others so you will need training, but no reason why it can’t be flown safely if the training is up to scratch. All of the wings we mentioned are derived from Hang Glider wings though they are designed to cope with the heavier loads associated with having a trike and engine underneath them. I guess you could put a different wing on the trike but I would be more inclined to stick with a wing that has been tried and tested with the trike unit. If you are after performance figures and specs etc it’s well worth looking on the Aeros website (aeros.com.ua/) who build the wings. Lots of useful comparison info on there. Hope this helps, never be afraid of asking questions and thanks for the sub. 👍

      @@paulieb796 I'm in southern California and have nothing within 500 miles of me. I've looked. The nearest training I could find was 500 miles and the nearest FlyLight dealer is over 2,800 miles from me on the other side of the country. You guys are lucky to live on a small island so you have a community relatively close to you.
