    8:02 Single shotgunning pinky demons, cacos, and barons are what make Doom 1 gameplay intolerable to me. I feel that the single shotgun and chaingun need to be brought up closer to (but not necessarily the same) the level that the launcher and plasma are on (with the low tier monsters being slightly buffed to match so they don't get left behind). 14:33 Most likely they cross a WR Lift Lower Wait Raise action before hitting the teleport line. Clever idea. 16:30 The only directly usable door action monsters can use in vanilla Doom map format is action special 1, the blazing doors (action special 117) aren't usable by monsters. Boom format still has action special 1, but it also has generalized doors, which default to not usable by monsters. It's definitely a mix of new formats adding more customizable door types that default to only player usable and doors being generally phased out, since they break up flow and there are typically better ways to stop the player going somewhere or connect areas together than using doors. 21:46 Softlocked 24:27 Plutonia has at least one "ladder" in map12, I don't remember if Evilution has any. Doom 1 and Doom 2 definitely never did stuff like that, they would use lifts in such places. 34:55 lmfao oops

    15:20 I've played way too much modded Doom to the point that all the mods feel kinda the same to me. It looks like the same ideas are repeated in majority of current mods. So now I stick to vanilla/boom source ports (and also the remastered version of Doom) Unless I want to play the PSX total conversion or PSX-inspired maps. Then I unfortunately have to use GZDoom for that...

    I ruined vanilla Minecraft for myself. I can't play Minecraft with out a map mod that gives me a mini map and waypoints i can teloport to.

    4:20 90's sector lighting like this always reminds me of Dr Sleep's lighting. I don't know if he was the first or saw someone else do it and adopted it himself, but I always associate it with him. I personally very prefer the sharp brightness contrast like this over gradients. 8:18 Probably my least favorite aspect of Doom 1, and something I sought to change when working on my (still unreleased) gameplay mod, is that half the Doom 1 bestiary is some flavor of imp: imp but more health, imp but flies, imp but hitscan. Leaves the game feeling very stale when the most common monsters all demand the same approach. This kind of thing I think Doom 2 did a good job addressing, but Heretic and Quake I feel were designed to solve this problem from the get go, with monsters attacking multiple times in sequence, with spread patterns, or less predictable projectiles, but still some of the garden variety fireball throwers. 10:44 Insert Leonardo DeCaprio pointing meme 11:40 That door must've been a Door Close Wait Open type, it was completely shut at 11:09 and reopened at 11:39. 14:30 Tasty tomato paste 15:20 I don't like vanilla Doom's gameplay (nor do I like how most mods approach Doom's gameplay, they usually feel like vanilla++ to me), but I do sometimes suck it up to play something vanilla if I feel it would be worth the frustration that tends to result from things like a cool 80 dmg rev shot or 64 dmg baron shot. 21:21 The way I tend to approach dropdowns when monsters will be below is preventing them from infinite height blocking (and attacking, in vanilla-like ports) the player with monster block lines. I think that infinite heights (and being unable to look vertically) are stupid and needlessly obnoxious. 22:27 "This is only 10% of my true power" 22:59 I genuinely love the Heretic style gold colormap for the invulnerability, it looks so nice and is a lot less hard on the eyes than the vanilla inverse map. 23:32 Hurt water, Pandemonium style. 27:48 Doom: The Funk Ages 32:20 Monsters can shoot straight up or down to hit you normally so the player having full freelook is only fair. Freelook is only really cheating imo if it's used to hit shoot switches and such earlier than intended. Otherwise it's fair play and sometimes lets you ignore some of the more obnoxious moments that can happen without it. 35:38 They're fire resistant, but their metal components rust in the water and corrode in the slime. 40:12 Conspicuous monster blocking lines, Yonatan Donner would approve, and one up this in Hell Revealed.

    what version of gzdoom are you using? that trick you used to get the red key doesn't work with 4.13.2

      4.12.2. It should still work, you have to stand on the top of the elevator, but hanging far enough off the edge that you can push the side of the elevator, and then run forward before the elevator lowers too far. Actually I'm not even sure that's how you're supposed to get it, it's kind of a crazy thing to do, especially on the first map. Playing this in GZDoom was kind of a mistake though! It was tested in DSDA, so that's probably the best way to do it.

      @@ShallowVA I can do it the first try every time with 4.12.0. For some reason, the way elevators work got changed in 4.13.2. So, I'll have to use an older gzdoom, or unfortunately, dsda

    4:05 Wow that was rude, 40/45 damage from that shotgunner. 13:35 Unless I'm misremembering, the first three episodes only had switches and GATE teleporters for exits, and skies only on the ceilings. 15:38 You found an I in the first level, yeah, it was a skylight in one of the metal/startan rooms. 19:49 The best defense is a good offense, though redundant defenses never hurt. 26:45 Having to chaingun/single shotgun barons, not something I ever find myself missing from Doom 1 wads. 31:45 Those teleport lines are flipped the wrong way, odd design choice. Apparently intentional since it's consistently happening this way in the wad. 34:34 Factual. 40:03 I like Doom's choppy animations, smoothing everything out makes the game look really weird to my eyes, though the spinning keys are cute. 41:13 "It made sense in my head but when I started talking I was like, "This doesn't make sense," but then I was like, "I can save it if I just keep talking," and it didn't happen at all! It never remotely came together." 44:46 Half the fun of buttons is mindlessly pressing them and later finding out that doing so was a terrible mistake.

    Honestly your characters and theming are what originally kept my interest with your channel. I adore them and I am especially invested in Harry's story because the poor guy can't catch a break. There are a bunch from a while back that I feel have been underutilized though.

    1:05:00 You can, if you modify the barrel's death state in Dehacked to call A_KeenDie somewhere, then when all barrels are destroyed, as long as they call that codepointer, all doors tagged 666 will open. If one wanted, they could emulate Doom 64's secret exit in map 1 very accurately using a combination of that and an activator monster to trigger a one-time monster usable Door_Raise action even in vanilla Doom's map format, which sadly doesn't happen in Doom 64 for Doom 2, would've been neat.
