  • I made all these between 2021 and 2023. Mostly these were a great learning experience, and I often abandoned them when I learned enough to know I had made too many amateur mistakes to fix.
If you want to try mapping for Doom, I highly recommend the RAMP community project! It's a great opportunity for beginners and those wanting to try something new! Check it out: www.doomworld.com/forum/topic...

I used to build very “experimental” maps for Starseige: Tribes. Their map editor was my first foray into any kind of 3D project. Learned a lot.

That Egypt//Indiana Jones/Wolfenstein themed set of maps is super cool, I hope we get to see more of that at some point.

Finally, took you long enough 🙄
Jokes aside, I love this stuff, it's very interesting getting a look at how you like to create Doom maps, and how much people think alike. I also lose interest in certain themes and do something else entirely sometimes :P it's hard to stick to one specific idea for a long period of time
By the way, the second map really reminds me of The Beginner's Guide, a collection of games made by a (fictional) person named "Coda". One of the first games they made was a random space station that for some reason has a maze in it, and it looks just like that. And you can also see the floor of the skybox in it, much like yours has seams :D
In fact, this whole video reminds me of that game, except that you're showing off your own games here, while The Beginner's Guide is narrated by Davey Wreden (co-creator of the Stanley Parable). I dunno if you've played it, but it's a pretty amazing 1-2 hours and I can only recommend it.
Also, about the Egypt map, I love the little details like the water being "drinkable", with the health potions. I've done that before too :P

There's so many good wads and games out there, it's hard to justify spending time on my own unfinished stuff! But I gotta give the people what they want. Eventually 😉.
I've had The Beginner's Guide recommended to me a lot! I guess that means I should probably check it out.
I liked how the original Wolfenstein 3D (or at least the shareware levels) seemed to place healing items in places that made logical sense. Plates of food near tables, dog food in rooms with dogs... dumping a bunch of potions near the water spouts felt like an extension of that.

This was really a trip. The desert adventure really does bring to mind the Indiana Jones PC titles (Infernal Machine) and I enjoy your use of Lovecraft level titles.

The whole wad was supposed to lead up to a boss fight against Nyarlothotep, but I didn't quite get that far. I always liked Sandy Peterson's more Lovecraftian take on Hell in Doom, so I thought I'd just go all in with it!

Your first desert Wolfenstein inspired map really reminds me of Laz Rojas’ prequel to his Astrostein trilogy called “The Portal”

I've played a few of his early Wolfendoom remakes, but I haven't really looked into his more original works. I should check it out! I have no idea why Egyptian ruins are such a fun setting for FPS levels.

10:30 Honestly, I have that anxiety too with my own projects. The best you can do is use it to push you to finish the things you want to create

13:57 Also, I agree. You created a nice area to exist in, even if it's a bit rough around the edges :)

The secret with the four pillars was also really creative. I liked it!

This just reminds me I still need to finish RAMP 2023. I'm about 200 maps deep in it, with only a couple I had to cheat past due to them breaking or one that was just basically impossible. I really got to finish it off, the vast majority are amazingly varied, intense, inventive, or even just charming for the 'my first map' ones. I love playing the 'new guy' ones.

RAMP is a huge undertaking if you're trying to get through it all, but it really is very fun and rewarding seeing all the new talent on display. There's an infectious sort of sense of excitement you get from playing a newbie map and you can just tell they had fun discovering how to make it all work!

@@ShallowVA There definitely is. One even has some delightful little messages left throughout it highlighting the map author's troubles with this or that thing, calling out his own errors and leaning points as part of the map. Very charming and a fun look at the design process of someone who (self admittedly) had no idea what they were doing!
