There is a lot of information about the differences online in detail. But in my basic understanding you have a much more precise weld and have control over the filler wire,sometimes no filler and a full fusion allowing for much better penetration. And a much smaller HAZ (heat affected zone) the reason it's easier to work is its joining more of the parent metals together and relying less on forcing wire into it like a mig. It also burns hotter yet cools slower. To me it's night and day difference just in the cleanup process, so much less grinding and mess for a stronger overall weld, isn't many downsides in comparison.

Really unsure to be honest, in something like this video there is about 60hrs of work compressed into an hour. I would say I'm about 220 hrs into this car and more than halfway done. It's also hard to say how long is left as there could be some fiddly things I've glossed over and don't realise how hard they are until the moment comes.

Haha don't worry I have to fix work that younger me did years ago that makes me laugh and shake my head.

Thanks for the kind words but there is thousands of people out there better than me, unfortunately the online world is overflowing with garbage work and quick fixes that get glorified into being normal and accepted by the masses. For top notch work I recommend watching wray from proshaper and Peter tommasini also has some very knowledgeable content on here, most of the top tier work like that is buried as they barely get any views as it's too boring for the normal person to watch, they prefer the TV show drama style videos.

Thanks mate, I've been full time for myself for just on 3 years this week. Before that I was a refrigeration mechanic but got bored of the job, always grew up around cars as dad is a panelbeater so I played with cars at home and then got a job at a custom car place doing more fabrication work like tubs,chassis rails,rollcages and custom engine bays/sheetwork etc, and kept practising metalshaping and resto stuff on the side as I enjoyed that more than the other side of the fab world. Spent a few years there renting my own workshop for after hours work and then moved states 3 years ago to setup at home.

😅no superhero just an Aussie battler. Im 31 ,All self taught , dads a panelbeater so I've grown up around cars, am a refrigeration mechanic by trade but left that when i finished my trade and played around with cars at home and then worked at a custom car place for a few years doing more fabrication work like custom rails,tubs,floors,diffs etc for drag/prostreet style cars. And just enjoyed the metalshaping and rust work more than the other fab side of things. so kept doing more of that on the side in a workshop I rented for myself. until finally setting up at home and doing it full time, long way from where I want to be so I have plenty to learn still.

Thanks mate, yeah it's a wonder they eveb survived aslong as they did with the poor design choices of multiple overlaps and water traps, but hey it was 1967..they didn't know how to make cars last just yet haha.

It's quite a big job, although is in great condition compared to the other two haha. Keeping track of the repairs is much easier when you make the pieces before tou remove them, I see people just hack out a large section and that's never going to end well as the car will move/you will just make the prices how you think they looked.

I bought it from a local paint shop a few years ago, great tool. And then I made a holder for the tooling so I can put them on the hammer stand and use them in reverse as a dolly. The website says sold out but they are available from a few places

Thanks mate, yeah so weld through primer on any overlapping edges and epoxy primer for the rest. I usually absolutely soak the cars insides with rust inhibitor like cavity wax until it's dripping out the seams, after they are painted ofcourse.

Thanks Tony, it's been a while for the cosmo, some of this was filmed months ago and I decided to finish the r100 completely before jumping back on so it freed up a space in the shop. I'm keen to see this one all finished up it will be a really nice car.

Cool cars and era, they only had an oxy to weld things together back then , much better modern technology that doesn't require loading the car up with lead unnessessarily these days. Putting anything over baremetal that isn't an epoxy/sealer to me is just never going to last, the filler these days is a much different structure so is not suitable for being applied directly over baremetal like back in the 80s.
