L10A Cosmo Body On A MX5 Floorpan - Saving A Cosmo Pt 3

  • Perimeter cutting my L10A Cosmo and placing it on top of a MX5 floorpan/chassis.
    Wheelbase corrected and wheel track narrowed to fit wider wheels.
    Body dropped 80mm so the rails are level with the sill.
    Drop knuckles and adjustable arms yet to be installed to determine wheel sizes, mocked up with wheels from my Datsun 1000.
    The other L10A Cosmo will also be placed on top of an MX5 floorpan.
    The owner is much taller than me so a body drop isn't possible for his as he will no longer fit inside.
    The video shows the floorpans being almost identical in terms of size and width, firewall and rear wall locations, it even hangs down the same amount as the factory Cosmo floor does.
    Also attempted to make a door skin to work out what shapes and methods are required.

    Insane craftmanship as always! I love to see how you go about it. Makes me feel like my project are so much more attainable lol.
    Question though: How are you gonna go about fitting the powertrain in? are you gonna redo the cradles to widen the center opening for the differential and the motors later on? I'm curious to see how you'll go about it. I know you did it on the Silgea too, but I don't believe it was shortened this much right?

    • @notevn
      @notevn  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks mate, the diff fits in there no worries it does look tight but it's just because the mx5 has long lower arms so the pivot points are right in the center of the car now.
      My Datsun has an IRS Silvia cradle (same as the stagea) and is shortened way more than this one. (200mm)

    Jay Leno is 180cm and he can drive his stock Cosmo - didn't see him comment on how tight it was.

    • @notevn
      @notevn  10 місяців тому +1

      Lenos is a series 2 (longer, so more seat room) and also stock floorpan, which hangs below the sill an enormous amount, this is bodydropped (shell dropped lower down to retain standard geometry but the car is lower)so the floor is now level with the sill.

  • @grayzbildz

    Loving the vids, your handskills are amazing. One question though, if you're forming new panels over the top of the originals, how do you account for the growth of the new panel by the thickness of the panel? Cheers, Andy

    • @notevn
      @notevn  11 місяців тому +1

      This gets said alot, The panel is only 0.9mm overlapping identically with a 0.9mm panel. So it's only the door openings / double edges that need to be tightened a touch once fitted like the tail buckets and door openings.. But everything else will fit the same once the panel underneath is removed. At worst case it will be 0.9mm larger overall and requires minor tightening of edges.
      Imo Sure beats cutting the piece out first like most do and then you lose all shape and guess how the panel is meant to go. Different story if the panels were a thicker materiel as it would grow too much when overlapped.

    Maybe a dumb question but would it be legal to modify a Honda crx floor pan so the exhaust can sit higher?

    • @notevn
      @notevn  Рік тому +2

      No such thing as a dumb question. Exhaust tunnels are quite common. Not illegal if you don't cut into any rails or supporting structural areas.
      Also Depends where you live. In Australia everything Is illegal so just build what you want and deal with the fines/repercussions when the time comes.
