Channel to share my likes and sometimes dislikes. I enjoy restoring vintage radios and learning their history. Im retired and now spend my days helping with the grandkids, working at the church and working on old radios. My favorites are WWll and before. I was born in Alabama and was raised on a farm. I retired from TVA where I was in Radiation Protection. No, I dont glow in the dark! Lol.
One of my pet peeves and it makes me so angry, is why I pay for cable entertainment, and also end up watching commercials. Commercials were to pay for free broadcast. Thats why I listen to the local radio station, I have no problem listening to those commercials. Off of soapbox.

With no AVC pulling in DX is an interesting experience. With a ham set the AVC on/off is always there when fading gets rough.
RG-59 coax outer jacket is perfect for sleeving the wire entrances for the IF cans.
The output transformer does not look near as bad as the interstage. I would dig around and try to find one with a mounting frame close to the same size and use it on the output transformer core to keep it together.
None of the caps have a voltage rating on the schematic. I just got all 630 volt.
The ground straps on the tuner shaft needed to be cleaned and treated with deoxid. Noisy.
I think a previous tech decided to sub a modern speaker and eliminate the field coil. It explains why R-4 was turned into charcoal. If you jump out the field coil a dropping resistor is required. Not to mention the filter caps would need an upgrade.
For those unfamiliar with early radio the filament voltage is 2.5 volts as is the dial light.
Looking for part 5 6 and 7

When I see work as thorougho as this, I get a really good feeling about this radio! I'll never understand how such things work, but love watching it. I usually watch all the vids first and comment on the last one. Beautiful job Larry!
@@tyronevanleyen9880 Thank You! This radio was given to me and it sat around for several years before I decided to restore it. It is a well built radio for the day and fairly simple. I enjoyed working on this one for sure, thanks for watching and commenting…..Take Care-Larry
My grandfather has one of these and an old record player in the garage. I 14 asked about it. He's had it forever and it don't work sadly but it's a cool piece of history
Hi Larry. Just wondering what happened to part five. I would love to see the finished result. Hope all is well. Terry
@@terryblackman6217 Hi Terry! Well, the radio is still sitting beside the workbench awaiting completion. I really dont have a good reason why its not complete other than I got sidetracked with other projects. Ive rebuild 3 ham radio amplifiers, a power supply of a 30 year old ham radio transceiver and lots of smaller projects. I do plan on finishing it and now that someone has asked, it reminded me that there are people out there that may be interested in seeing it. I still have raw footage of the Silvertone console I restored for my daughter. So sounds like Im making excuses….lol…..I’ll put the chassis back on the workbench and see if I can remember where I was at…lol. Thanks so much for watching and the comments! Take Care-Larry
Great video! Question about removing the AVR board ... am I supposed to remove the coiled wire around the posts? Or is the AVR board supposed to be able to moved out of the way enough with the wires still connected?
@@W4YDL Hi, I was able to move the board enuf without removing the wires. As you know, these connections are known to break if moved a lot. The wires are solid and like anything else if flexed several times can break. Use care moving the board and be sure to double check to make sure one of the wires dont break. If the radio has been subjected to damp or uncontrolled climate, it might be a good idea to apply a little solder to the wire wraps. Makes it harder to remove later, but assures a better connection. Sometimes with a damp environment, the wire wrap connections corrode. I bought my 520 new back in 1978 and still love the way it works. I have it on my table and occasionally use it to keep the cobwebs blown out. I hope this advice helps and if I can help in any other way, please feel free to ask. Feel free to email me. Take Care--73 Larry W4PJP
@@Backtothefutureradios thanks, Larry! I was able to move the board just enough to replace the caps! Radio is working like a charm now! Hope to see you on the air!

BRUSH, do not spray anything on the asbestos. SPRAYING will blow particles around, so brush it with whatever. Think about it. No worries about dried lacquer either, it is NOT going to burst into flames any more than the wood will. Wet lacquer is way more flammable due to the solvents that have not evaporated. Even if it was still wet. those tubes will never get hot enough to ignite anything. Without overthinking the issue, you can mix up some watered down white wood glue, then BRUSH it on. Can add a second coat (brushing) if you want. Let dry, done. The main point was that you want to keep fibers from flying around, but then spraying something on will blow fibers around. That's why BRUSHING it on will keep the fibers out of the air and encapsulated. Do anything outside upwind just in case.
Good comments! Thank you…I will pin this comment for others to be sure to see!!
I got self adhesive heat resist pad from Summit Racing for $10. I didnt like the idea of selling it with the asbestos present.
Hi I appreciate this post is a couple of years old. I have the ts 520s. It receives great and transmits, however when I am trying to tune it up I am getting no movement at all on the ALC. Plate current set at 60mA. Does anyone know what the issue might be? I just need a start point for diagnosis. Thanks in advance. Mick
Hi Mick, great radios! I would start by cleaning all switches and working them with cleaner. Then check the resistors on the HV board. Sometimes the resistors for the metering go bad, I cant remember which one, seems I had to replace one back in the early 80’s….lol. Does t do it on all bands? Seems the manual speaks about lack of ALC on 10 meters. Be careful in the rig, hope this helps! Later today, I will try to find which resistor to look for. Keep me updated….Take Care-Larry. ps…. A good resource of knowledge and help is the Kenwood hybrid group….. here is a link…kenwood-hybrids.groups.io/g/main

Great series! Thanks for all the tips and the info. Since I have been working mostly on AC-DC AA5 sets (no transformer) I would appreciate a little clarification for new cord hook-up on a transformer set. I know the LINE goes yhrough a fuse to the ON-OF swwitch. Where is the best place to hook up the NEUTRAL? Thank you
Thank you for watching and commenting. To my knowledge, one place is as good as any to connect the NEUTRAL to the other connection of the transformer primary. A lot of the radios have terminal strips for that. Some of the Philcos have a block capacitor where both the HOT and NEUTRAL are connected allowing a bypass capacitor connection to chassis. Hope this helps, Take Care-Larry
Thank you for the video. I'm restoring a Philco speaker and struggled with centering the voice coil and your solution of the paper strips worked perfectly. No more buzz. Rod

Hey Larry, I think this is going to be one that you are very well pleased with all of it, cabinet as well as chassis!
Thanks Wayne! The cabinet turned out a little better than I had expected. As you may have caught in the video, this one was completed before I started editing the videos, so its sitting in my daughter’s house now (spoiler alert)….Thanks for watching and as always the comments! Take Care-Larry
Larry, your veneer work is very nice. You could really raise your game if you would use grain sealer on your new veneer. It would give you a smoother finish and save you a lot of labor.
Thanks Mike! Ive used grain sealer before and didnt get the results I was looking for. I tried it on a 1937 Howard console and had to rework it a couple of times to get the look and finish I was looking for. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but the color of the statins and toners were skewed when I used grain sealer. Thanks for the tip, I’ll try to find some videos on how to use grain sealer. Each cabinet I do is a little bit different. I appreciate you watching and the comments! Take Care-Larry

Lucky devil! I love Tennessee! As you know, I live in Utah now, but I grew up in central Illinois, so Tennessee always had better weather. Within the next year or so, I plan to move to Missouri, which is a lot closer. I like your practical approach to cabinet work. I enjoyed this video. Michael

Man, Larry! That Hammerlund is a beast! I'm glad you came back. I love your videos. Nice work here. Michael
Off to a good start. Silvertone made some very nice radios. Although this is going to take some work, I'm sure you will give this the TLC it deserves.
Thanks Bob! It is a lot of work and I normally wont put this much effort in most of the radios, but I figured I would, because it had the eye tube and my family wanted it for their new house….They appreciate older stuff, so here goes…..Thanks for watching and as always enjoy your comments! Take Care-Larry
The radio attic has a photo of what it should look like. Cabinet will be a challenge but nothing that can't be done. It's got AM broadcast with two shortwave bands but doesn't match Rider's line drawing of the chassis at all. 57DM early 4486 chassis. Ahh the joys of veneer work. Replace the whole side with a new sheet. Thanks Larry for showing the work done.
Thanks Steve! Yes, veneer work is time consuming, but can be therapeutical, lol…..if you caught it in the video, I said most of the work will be done because I wanted to take advantage of low humidity in the spring. In this radio, I show a lot of the process, it may bore some folks and some will like it, maybe, lol…..Thanks for watching and commenting! Take Care-Larry
Oh no! I only have part 1 to watch🥲 I have been looking at some radios that need veneer, and I haven't ever replaced veneer, so your comment that the new veneer is thinner will be kept'd in mind. When I went to the Wood Craft website, I saw that I can get it with paper backing. Could you add more paper to get to the same thickness? Thanks Luther
Luther, not to worry….I have added additional paper and in fact on occasions, two layers of veneer and sand it down. If you replace the whole sheet of veneer, then the thickness is a never mind. If you are patching pieces of veneer, then it (could) be something you have to address. Just check the thickness first…you can figure how to make it thicker if you have to. Not all older veneer is thicker, I have just ran into it in the past and had good results with paper backing and two layers…keep me updated as to ur progress….email me if you would like…lhlyda719 at att dot net. Larry - this will make for a fun project. Lots of work ahead, but it’s in great hands. Thanks for sharing and I’m enjoying your updates as you progress. Best, Don
Wow! What a beautiful radio. Like you, I really like the corner speakers (especially on Zeniths), but they are sooooo easy to put a meat hook through! Those pre-set buttons are nice, too. Really nice work, Larry. I sure have missed your vids. I hadn't watched much UA-cam lately, and what a treat to see something new from you. As always, your work is excellent. I'm going to watch Part 2 right away. Cheers! Michael

Larry, your replacement veneer has a beautiful grain. Doing both sides is the only way to go.
Thanks Mike! I now know it is the right thing to do…..😉…..Thanks for watching and the comments, both means a lot to me…. Take Care-Larry
Looks like a GREAT project Larry! I think doing both sides in the same veneer will produce the best results. Lot's of cleaning on this one for sure. She's rough, but will really be nice when completed. I love those eye tube radios!!!
Thanks Gregg, Most people are suggesting to replace both sides of the veneer. I think that is the best option. She is a bit rough, but should clean up…Take Care-Larry
Hey Larry. A nice project for sure. Looks to be a slow process to get that old stuff off. :)
I plan on taking my time, the fun is in the journey….Thanks for watching! Take Care-Larry
Nice video, thanks for all the time editing it and putting it up. BTW, does Judy know you have her iron?
Thanks Josh, and if I want Judy to know about the iron, I will tell her, Thank! Lol
Good to see you on with another radio! I would suggest using NEW Vanier on both sides of the cabinet! Using a resistor to replace the Field Coil??? I was really hoping that you would rewire the field coil and use that instead. My reasoning is that the Field Coil will not get hot like the resistor will, and the resistor really does get very hot. It isn't a matter of "Right or Wrong" because both methods work. It is simply a personal preference of mine to use the coil in a Pi Filter circuit. I love it when the entire radio assembly is made to look as good as possible. Take a look at this video of an example of what I mean ua-cam.com/video/8sgDfzjJjAA/v-deo.html starting from Time Stamp 17:38 to the end. It really does make a difference to me. Keep up your excellent work! Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks Wayne! If were are wishing, I wish I had the whole speaker assembly….lol…..I agree with using the speaker coil if possible, we will see….Thanks for the video suggestion…I’ll check it out…Take Care-Larry
Looks like fun.
Should be a challenge….Thanks for watching and commenting! Take Care-Larry
I learned something. U. L. knot, and " skip". I'v heard the term "skip", but didn't know what it was.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I kind of misspoke about what I was actually hearing, that fluttering sound is actually just when the line of sun and dark meets and when some of the radio waves bounce off the ionosphere to farther places (skip) and some of then are still being absorbed by the ionized layers of the ionosphere. Its actually called fading and sounds like a flutter….Take Care-Larry
