Ive featured crabs and now turtles....lol...I used to find several of these a year...this is the first in several years.... Instead I find a stray cat and 3 kittens in my shop yesterday....😬😬😬 Thanks for watching and commenting...maybe I will feature some other odd animal like a black mamba next....lol Take Care-Larry
After your power supply surgery, I think I can say with confidence you'll have no issues making small lightening bolts from those 6146B's! That turtle was so cute! Glad you'll get him back to the lake to eat insects with his/her buddies!
Thanks!! I have found up to six of those turtles in my pool...I try to get them back to the lake whenever I find them...I think the 101 will probably work now, I just want to check it out and make sure all the parts are in tolerance!! Take Care-Larry
Larry - Nice Job!! I purchased an HW set off ebay and I've already rebuilt the PS. Checks are good, now to the RT unit. I can't wait to llok at your next video! 73... KC3QFS
Thanks! I e been happy with the 101…..It’s not my day to day rig….I need to fire it up every once in a while to keep everything working…Take Care-Larry
hi Larry great job i just watch your video on how to restore an old power sup for hw 101, i hope i can have one like yours. I have just got an Hw-101 but no PS-23 included. Thank for your video. 73
Thanks! There should be some extra power supplies out there, doesnt have to be a heathkit but these PS were pretty beneric back in the day. A lot of rigs used PS with the same HV and bias voltages. Good luck! Take Care-Larry
I remember my elmer......he put on a radio class to teach morse code and theory.....he had 25 in his first class, he used the $ to buy a 101 to bet back on the air.....I never could afford one back in the day! I want to make a few contacts on this when I get this one up to where it should be...Thanks for watching and commenting.....Take Care-Larry
Thanks Dan! I’ve just started on Part 2, about to power up the 101....not sure my plan of action at this time....from all I’ve read and seen, I may end up pulling each board and checking the resistors.....from what I have seen some folks have had to replace many out of tolerance resistors....we will see....Also, I just printed out an article by Mark WB8JKR....not his call now on “Optimizing the Heathkit HW-101, SB-100-102Transceivers” which I may do the enhancements listed there.....Take Care-73.....WA4PJP....Larry
Rubber drive belts, there are three in this HW-101 transceiver, or should be, are still made! Whomever built it did a fine job. The PS 23 shows it age but was a good restore candidate. Unhappy little turtle.
Thanks! This one has 2 rubber one spring loaded string/ wire (I havent looked that close yet).....I have ordered 2 belts that suppose to be guaranteed 10 years.... we will see. I can tell you the little turtle was very happy as he swam off into Watts Bar lake!!......Thanks for watching and commenting! Take Care-Larry
@@Backtothefutureradios watts bar i thought in video 2 the lake looked familiar. Just live down the road in Maryville. I have 2 hw101s and power supplys to restore. One has the cw filter. Looking fwd to part 3. Thanks for the video.

Not much to part 3…..been running the rig and working out small bugs….mostly mechanical issues, like dial was rubbing wiring harness etc….I will eventually post part 3…Take Care-Larry ps….I have another 101 and ps on the shelf….not as nice cosmetically as this one but was working when I put it on the shelf…
I have one of these Hw101's and a PS23 supply sitting on a shelf in My Garage. Bought them both off of EBAY but the external looks of the Transceiver looked great the PC board and internally looked awful. Will be interesting to see what you do with this one.
Thanks Double L!! Is the problem the soldering of the boards or just been in a bad environment??? This one looks in really good shape....I made a couple of CW contacts on this one when I first got it....not sure about the ssb side.....I have another one on the shelf....I used to use it on occasion, the outside is rough looking...someone has cut a slot in the front and added a switch....not very professional looking....I’m hoping this one will pan out and be one I can use in the shack. Thanks Don! This one, I had picked up at a hamfest several years ago.....I have ordered some from ebay that came on a slow boat....lol....they dont give that stuff away either......BTW Tim is back on the trail for two weeks....he is crushing it with about 20 mpd....he is on day 5. Take Care-Larry
I am going to acquire one just like it and according to what its owner tells me, it does not have audio. I am EA7JZM and I am self-taught in electronics and I have several devices made with valves. If I had any questions, I would consult you... if you see it as correct... thank you very much
@@josueamodeo6293 Good luck acquiring the Radio….My opinion is since this was a kit that was intended for people to build with limited skills, you should have no problem making it work! How I would start is do a good inspection of the radio and power supply and look for any obvious faults or loose connections. Test all tubes (valves), loosen and tighten all printed circuit board screws (ground issues). Use the resistance charts to test all the resistances on the printed circuit boards. Slowly bring the power up, and test all voltages against the voltage charts. NOTE: the resistance and voltage charts have been very helpful to me during the work on my Heathkit. Good Luck and please keep me informed of your progress! Take Care and 73….Larry W4PJP
@@Backtothefutureradios Hi, I already have the equipment at home.. I'll tell you at first sight that I need the union of the end shaft because it's cracked... I don't know where to get it... and also the rubber rings that move the tandems... where can I get them? . thank you ...
I have a couple HW-101s, bought one for myself last summer and another in the fall for my dad if he passed his tests. Found your videos when getting a little research in before starting on Dad's, just passed tech and general at 73. Do you have any concerns with the ripple current on the large capacitors? I ran across a post on the 23 series power supply and someone stating the Nichecons with HK part numbers are hard to beat in specs. After running a simulation on the power supply I got ripple currents of over 2 amps. I contacted hayseed and they were very helpful, but not comfortable with the numbers. Honestly thinking about using film capacitors, but would feel like a butcher making them fit. Thanks for the videos!
Congratulations to ur Dad! The capacitors I bought from mouser works fine, I never looked at the ripple, the PS works great. Im not familiar with using film capacitors in a power supply. I used aluminum electrolytics and as I said, have no issues. Hopes this helps….Take Care-Larry
@@Backtothefutureradios understand and thanks, probably never be used enough to cause a problem, but running caps over rated ripple current will cook them someday. Film caps might shift the stress to the diodes and transformer
Messing with 800 volts is just good clean fun! Great job, thanks for the time you put into this.
The only video I've watched in several months that featured a turtle. Yay!
