Don't feel pressured by the a.m. radio restoration crowd, I think your concept of working on amateur radio equipment is a good one thanks for letting me look over your shoulder 73
Thanks Mack!! I have a hallicrafters ht-37 transmitter on the bench now….it is definitely an ugly duckling for sure!!. The video may be out next week….Thanks again…Take Care-Larry
Finally got my 520s recapped! You are correct no need to re cap the whole radio. I did most of your checks. Since we don’t have the humidity here in Utah I am not going to worry about the carbons. Got the pictures on Qrz finally 73 JohnBoyUtah KJ7 TBR
Thats great! Im glad you got it done! Those dual grid caps can be a booger, but those new caps should keep it going for a while. Thanks for watching and commenting! Take Care-Larry W4PJP
@@Brenda-jf2pe those caps are hard to change period! I made the PC board to mount mine, still hard to access. Not enuf of the radios out there to have the PC board manufactured. Thanks for the update….73 Larry W4PJP
Enjoyed all your videos, Larry, hope we hookup on 20 meters some day! Kenwood Audio is still the best with my 520s I have a Sure 577 Caroid microphone works better than the Ts-50 microphone!
@@Brenda-jf2pe you ever check in to hybrid net? Ive only did the 40 meter net….maybe I’ll try the 20 meter one one day. Would love to try and hook up on 20 sometime. Take Care…73 Larry
This has been a great series Larry. Its nice to see an older lady being cared for and brought into full spec from a dormant state. I do have a soft spot for older rigs due to the old rose tinted specs, having been licenced for 36 years now. Sure, its not an sdr with bells and whistles but its a good honest radio that just works.
I know what you mean George! These rigs were ahead of their time and this is probably my best radio…..yes, it doesnt have the bells and whistles, but, Im not big on computer driven things….to me..it takes the fun out of adjusting switches, filters, rf gain…I wanted to be an operator of an amateur radio…this rig brings back fond memories for me! Thanks for watching and I always appreciate your comments! Take care-Larry
Thanks “Double L”…..Im pleased with the results so far….Im going to run it a few weeks and see how she drives! Thanks for watching and commenting….Take Care-Larry
Nice Job Larry ! I have one and I did repairs, changed the carrier board because LSB cristal was died ! Next step is an upgrade for 100W ! 73's - PY2NDB
I have this radio as my primary, I am a new ham , your video has been a great help! Now if I could find an Antenna that can live through Hurricane winds at least twice a year I am in business. I live at the mouth of a canyon that can be very windy. THANKS KJ7TBR., aka JohnBoyUtah 🇺🇸🎙🎙🎙👍🏻
Thank you for watching and the kind remarks. I’m glad it helped….maybe an antenna that is on pulleys that is easy to drop and store and put back up?? Just a thought. Take Care, 73 Larry W4PJP
Hi Larry, great videos...I'm a retired electronics tech and just bought a TS520s that needs a little TLC. I used to own one when I was a "johnny" novice back in the early 80's and I regret ever selling it. Most of this stuff I could probably figure out on my own...eventually...but why reinvent the wheel if you don't need to, right? Anyway, I want to replace the lights in the meter and dial escutcheon with blue LEDs. I know the guy that does The Radio Shop did the same thing but I couldn't see where he bought them from. Where did you get yours and do they have the current limiting resistor as part of the assembly? Thanks again!
Hi Tim! Welcome aboard and thanks for subscribing! Yes, the LED’s have the current limiting resistor installed, just replace the bulb with the LED. I got mine from the same place as Buddy did on Radio Shop. I think he told where he got them, maybe he just said ebay. Here is the link www.ebay.com/itm/264270643330 I just bought the second set, I came across another 520 recently, you have to order the LED’s and then send a message to the seller which color you want. He responds fairly quick that he received ur request. I think I got mine within 3-4 days. Hope this helps and good luck! Maybe hear you on the Kenwood Hybrid net on the weekends? Take Care-73…..Larry W4PJP
i got the sleve off the driver tube with a old set of "snap ring plyers". some one said about expanding the sleeve and i tried my old 2 way pliers and it took 2 sencence to do the job. i have a pictures of the pliers but dont know how to inclued a picture.
Another helpful and interesting video. I'm sure you are not going to have any desire to open it up again and do anything else in it, but I have to wonder if it would be of any use to replace the resistors that were in that voltage divider chain going to the meter with 1% resistors and have them at least 0.1" off the board? Speaking of resistors, when you were talking about the carbon comp resistors it reminded me that Paul (Mr. Carlson's Lab) mentioned that the Allen Bradley type did not have that moisture ingression problem but that the "roundie" type as he called them did. The ones you have appeared to be the Allen Bradley type. Any hints as to what your next video will be on?
Thanks Wayne! The radio is performing as well as it did when I bought it new back in the day! Im looking forward to checking into the Kenwood hybrid net later today…..good info on the resistors from Paul….That dude is amazing!! Hmmmm…..what is my next video? Im thinking of doing a broadcast radio….but which one? Thanks for watching and commenting….Take Care-Larry
Thanks Carl!! I agree…..this one is heavy but it also will work on 12 VDC….I really think this is my best performer….Hopefully, it will work for a while….Take Care-Larry

can you help me, i cant get the driver tube out of my ts 520. the sheld is stuck to the mount and i dont want to pull to hard but it wont release from the base, the tube is clear the mount but the strap wont alow me to remove the tube. HELP!
Hello Charlie, Im going from memory, but it seems there is a grounding strap that comes up between the tube and shield. I dont know if some were soldered in or if moisture has gotten in and corrosion has seized it up. Have you tried to open up the shield a bit? Some are rolled metal that has a gap in it and can be opened a bit. Hope this helps! Take Care Larry W4PJP
My ts520s when i turn it. On the relay chatters in an out. It will. Receve. An then it will not have any audio at all then it comes back. Then it will have a audio feadback.
