    Larry, it will be fun to watch you work on this. I restored the exact same radio model about two years ago and donated it to an organization that had charity auctions for the St. Jude Children's hospital. The radio turned out to be the big seller at a whopping $450 offer for the radio. Made me feel proud. Keep up the good work.

      Congratulations! That’s a lot of $ for a great cause! Our daughter was a St Jude patient back in the early 90’s...Great hospital and folks!!! She is now 33...married, 2 kids, and a marathon runner...I’m curious if this cardboard filter can is a replacement (I’m beginning to believe it is)....Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting....Take Care-Larry

      I think a replacement. Mine was a black cardboard cover that was stamped with Philco on it.

      @@Backtothefutureradios Hi, one more thing. If you think you might be disassembling and cleaning that vernier tuning on that radio, I have a document on what was involved if interested. If so, somehow let me know how we can touch base and I'll email it to you. It is a two-page word doc.titled "Rebuilding the Vernier Tuning Shaft on Philco Models 38-8, -9 and -10" I decided to take it apart and clean it up when I did my radio.

    Larry - that’s a nice looking radio and very deserving of your touch. I look forward to seeing the work commence and it’s great to know you heard from Michael. Video publishing as you know is very time consuming and I respect his position. I appreciate you taking the time to share your skills/projects with us and I’m glad you’re feeling better my friend. Best, Don

    Larry,
    I was watching this one again and something caught my eye. I looked to see if anyone else mentioned it, but I didn't see any comments - that "top hat"-shaped knob is the center tuning knob (fine tune) and the big one that was in that fine tune slot belongs where you found the top hat. I love your vids, my friend. Cheers!

    Larry,
    This is a great vid! I really like late-30s Philcos. They had a classic American style that stands out more than any other brand in defining the era. You did an excellent and thorough job of explaining what you are doing and why. I like your videos, because I never feel rushed by them and they always hold my interest. My white cat that liked your videos was Freddie. He died shortly after Wifey passed. However, I have two new cats named Bert and Ernie. This past weekend, I learned that Ernie, in particular, seems to like to hang around when your videos are playing. Perhaps there is something about your voice and style that appeals to the feline psyche! Thank you for the shout-out. You are always a good friend. Keep up the excellent work! Cheers! Michael

    Glad to see this radio. I'm working on a Philco 38-40. It looks similiar to this one. Mine had an antenna coil missing and the band switch was destroyed, so it took some figuring on how to fix. I'll be interested to see the inside of this one.

      @@Backtothefutureradios Yes, mine had a component perched on top of the tuning capacitor. It looks like a antenna coil. It looks as though someone added there. one lead came from the external antenna lug and the other lead went to the grid cap of the 6K7 oscillator tube. I was wondering if supposed to be there. i,ve not seen anything like it.

  • @RapperBC
    @RapperBC 3 роки тому

    That unknown static/ noise sounds like a condenser microphone with a bad power supply connection. A little DeOxit on the mic connector should help out if it recurs. (;^>)

    Wonderful to see another new video from you Larry!
    This should be a very interesting radio to restore. I am looking forward to all the videos in this series. I love how you come up to a "roadblock" and simply say, can't do "X" , well then I will simply do "Y" instead. Love your positive attitude.
    I realize that it might be an error in my sight but I think you mentioned that the two capacitors, the electrolytics, were replacements for a "can" on the top. I realize this suggestion may be a bit pricey and therefore not doable, but have you considered using one of these to put the capacitor(s) on top again: adapt-a-cap.com/collections/all
    I have been thinking about doing something similar myself, but would be making the entire thing myself instead of purchasing it. In any case, I am interested in seeing what you decide to do on this one.
    At first, I thought the reading on the "output transformer" was a matter of dirty connection, but as you continued to work with it, and the value of resistance kept changing, well, I agree with you that it is either going to require a rebuild of this one, or a replacement. Not sure I would trust this one with it changing like that.
    Blessings to you and your family!
    Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, and Stay Happy!!!

      @Backtothefutureradios  3 роки тому

      Thanks Wayne! The adapt-a-cap looks like a good idea, but Im afraid its a little rich for me...lol....I may try to locate a picture of the can and see if I have one....otherwise, mount a couple under the chassis....worked before...I have a replacement output transformer on an old speaker that I can use.....I probably will tear this one apart and see whats inside...lol.....hope you got my holiday email I sent you? Take Care-Larry
