How Moving to Calgary Transformed My Mental Health and Lifestyle | Financial, Social, and Time Freed
About 6 months ago, I packed my bags and moved back to Calgary from Toronto and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. In this video, I’m sharing how this move completely transformed my mental health, finances, and overall lifestyle.
Toronto had me feeling burnt out, stressed about money, and constantly stuck in traffic. Meanwhile, Calgary gave me more affordable housing, shorter commutes, and easy access to the mountains (because let’s be real-who can stay mad when they’re hiking in Banff?). Plus, making new friends here has been easier than I expected, thanks to the fitness scene.

Asking ChatGPT 6 Reasons You Should Move to Toronto | Millennial Moves
Your happiness radiates!! 🎉 Absolutely love this video! Couldn't agree more that the lifestyle in Calgary has everyday mental and physical health benefits in comparison to the GTA. The mountains absolutely dissolve stress and promote physical health and are only as far away as your old GTA commute to work. Can't wait for some summer hiking highlights! Speaking of commuting, maybe your viewers would be interested to learn about the 15+ skywalk system. I walk on it everyday to work and I get lots of exercise and can move across the downtown on indoor bridges without being exposed to winter elements. I really love it. Keep up the great videos and congratulations on manifesting a great new chapter. Awesome job. Yay Calgary!!
Thanks so much! Yeah I can't wait for the spring/summer in Calgary. That's a good idea, you're the 2nd person that suggesting making a video about commuting, so I will consider embedding that 15+ Skywalk system when I make the video. All the best as always!
I wonder how a Calgary move would pan out for someone from Vancouver. I had been to Toronto recently and found Vancouver to be more captivating.
can't speak personal exp! but from the ppl i know who moved to calgary from vancouver, a lot of them share w/ me they enjoy the signficant sunlight calgary gets compared to van city!
ToronTo
Turrrrunooo
Calgarian is way more chill and classic. People are much nicer.
woohoo!
aside from increasing COL which is an issue everywhere, the only crappy thing about Calgary, is not owning a car. Also, not a walking city. Too much sprawl and drivers are a holes. Not pedestrian friendly. Moving forward though, water shortages will be a huge issue in the next years. For all of Alberta in fact. Warmer winters, hotter summers, less snowfalls and less rain are contributing to the problem. Having said that, I’d rather be here than anywhere else in Canada.
Ya its not very walkable, basically need a car to get to places!
everyone here in toronto hustling and all do sound angry. It's a no chill city
@@funguy2627 that’s not good!
Born in Calgary and moved to Toronto in 2012. Just moved back to Calgary in November for pretty much the exact same reasons as you. Even though there are a lot of things to do out there, my partner and I would either just end up staying home or her and I would go to the occasional show or restaurant like once a month. So in that way it was easy to feel kinda isolated out there amongst so many people. Maybe I just outgrew that phase of my life. But now that I’m back I’m finding I’m more social with the friends and family I’ve had since before I moved and am eyeing looking at home ownership in the spring too. Long term condo living just wasn’t for me. Especially with those prices and comparing to what you can get out here for the equivalent.
nice! you moved to toronto around same time I did. glad you both made the decision to make the move back to calgary. Wishing you all the best!
@ thanks, you too!
waiting for your next update, how you got away from the calgary snow and winter for your mental health
I don't think I've ever desired to live in Toronto. Calgary is a great city. Born and raised here. So many opportunities for a sense of community through hobbies. It's easy to find like-minded people. There's enough things to do and restaurants to go to. Enough festivals. Calgary isn't perfect in every way but quality of life is pretty good.
you bet! go calgary!
Wife and I moved from Toronto to Calgary a couple years back.... You don't move to Calgary for the city lol it's such a sketchy city, so many sketchy people and places I've had more stuff stolen and robbed from me here in three years than I did in 10 years in Toronto. Calgary drivers are so much worse, if theres a day that Deerfoot/Glenmore isn't closed down for a wreck let me know. But yeah the mountains and my job are why we came here, certainly not the city lol
sorry to hear you've had things stolen/robbed, that must be very frustrating.
Buying a home or condo means no letter under the door that fills you with dread on what the rent increase will be. If you can, buy. The peaceful feeling is amazing. I control my mortgage. I've broken 3 mortgage loans for better ones. The last was to fixed in fall 2021 at 2.29. If you buy you need to read the financial news. Watch for words like the concern of inflation. If you see that move like the wind to lock everything down. Electric, gas, mortgage etc. And tell your condo board to do the same. "Concern of inflation" notice means inflation is arriving in financial speak.
certainly don't miss those days of annual rent increases! I often stay on top of the market! Thanks for watching too.
Calgary lol no jobs, no life, no good weather ...... shit hole
Frank! Glad your mental health is improving since moving; That's what's most important. At least its sunny and -20! 🥶 Keep warm bud and hope to catch you around the city!
Thanks man! Yes the sun helps a lot especially when I work from home, it's nice cause I'm stuck inside anyways. Yes hope to catch you around the city
It would be fun if you made a dedicated video about commuting in Calgary. Maybe showing us a typical commute but car, transit and biking, How long it takes during rush hour and what the vibes are like. The visuals would be so interesting to see
That's a great idea. I usually talk about it already, but an actual depicting / live footage of the commute would be valuable. Thanks for the video idea Nick!
Keep on going down your path! Loving hearing how you feel about being back in Calgary
Appreciate that! And yes will do, there's much to cover about Calgary
I'm burned out just watching this video.
lol! sry
Wow I'm really surprised! The winters look much nicer than they are here in Ottawa!
chinook winds helped!
Calgary is also getting expensive, but the difference is atleast the adjacent communities (Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks) seem to be florishing. I just wish it wasn't so car dependent.
ya def getting more expensive. I'm shocked how much housing gone up since the first time I moved. car dependancy is another thing too!
Happiness ↑. Stress ↓. Living in a spacious, affordable city surrounded by exquisite natural beauty. Now that's a recipe for success! I'm delighted that your move to Calgary has been so positively transformative. Wishing you much continued joy in your new home. Thanks for sharing your inspirational story. 👍
Thank you! Can't go wrong with that simple recipe I feel for sure!

I am planning to move to Calgary in Spring from Saskatoon. The mountains are atleast about an hour drive from Calgary though, right? I am hoping to buy there after a few months, but single detached houses are getting pricier there too.

@@tns-rox you're very welcome!
Hey! Sorry for the question... this year Im going to move in Calgary with my boyfriend and we are so excited! we really like the city, we see it as a mix of a big city and a quiet city. but we read a lot of "disheartening" things around, they say it's very boring, is it true? we chose it voluntarily...
Don't be sorry at all! Good question. Between Big/Quiet city, my personal opinion is Calgary sides more on the quiet side (coming from Toronto) -- for "boring-ness" I feel that depends what stage in life you're at. For example: Younger 20s would more likely say Calgary is boring vs Late 20s or older may enjoy Calgary's more quiet life and work/life balance. Best of luck.
Lol I think you like Calgary! I moved out of Toronto too but I moved to Vancouver and loved it!
No complaints so far! Nice I always thought Vancouver would've been my 2nd option, hope you like it out there!
As someone who grew up in the GTA, I can say your dollar goes waaaay further out here. I bought a pretty much new detached house with a 2-car garage that's a 20 minute drive to downtown Calgary for $625k a few months ago. Would probably cost me close to $2M for something equivalent that's that close to downtown Toronto
@@TheNewSchoolGamer nice! Congrats on your new home. I’ve noticed it as well. It’s crazy hey
@@FrankHuynh Thanks! Yeah, Alberta definitely lives up to the name of "Canadian Texas" when it comes to home prices
Sorry but 17 Ave SW is living on it's past glory. It's nothing like it was 20 years ago. 4 St SW is better for restaurants these days. Nothing has taken up the old party atmosphere. Calgary is dead that way.
curious how 17th ave. was 20 years ago!
Both are terrible cities to live in!
Coco milk tea ftw!
heck ya!
Great video. What would be typical monthly HOA fees for the third unit?
I’m scared for February, it was super mild last year until then. It became -50 almost 😭😭 every year is so different! Good video Frank ☺️
polar vortex is a part of every calgary winter and most often happens in feb....it will happen again but atleast its only max one week LOL once its done you can relax until the next feb rolls around
haha! I should be fine cause at that point only a month or so until spring. Tho -50 sounds brutal. Thanks Patricia!
@ damn!
Collab!!? Hahahahah
In the clurb, we all fam! You got it!
Hi I'm not sure why 17th is your center point as it's pretty boring. It was much better 30 years ago but now it's just living in it's past reputation
I'm just more familiar with it!
Hey Frank! Local Calgarian here and i did not know the Alley in Chinatown isn't there anymore! :O But i know it's still in malls like Crossiron Mills and Chinook i believe
Hey! Ya it must've closed down recently - hoping maybe they're doing renovations? Thanks for the heads up for the other locations - I think there's one by university district as well!
Great video, Frank! Pretty sweet getting an on-the-ground look at Calgary. It’s a pretty nice looking city and I’m looking forward to visiting for myself.
Thanks Tylor! Glad you liked it - that was the point - to give ppl on the ground look at Calgary! Pretty nice hey haha come visit!
Hey Frank thanks for this informative vid. I also plan to make the move from Toronto to Calgary this year. I'm curious which company did you use to haul your car and how was that experience like? Great video Frank! I feel like our city is getting progressively warmer in the winter each year but to be honest I prefer it the cold sucks
Thanks so much for watching! Ya it does seem to be that way hey.
ive been here 40 years and agree....we are one month into winter and its barely snowed and the temp has hardly dropped below -20. years ago we would dip this low starting in october some days and it would be more or less consistent until march and then start warming up .

Being a Canadian sharecropper, really sucks, working to pay taxes to the govt and rent to your landlord. Lower your expectations in life, we have a Trudeau Liberal/NDP govt.

Great video. Wishing you much success in beautiful Calgary! 👍
Thanks so much :)
To "save" Toronto ( it's probably too late" } we need to have the provincial government and all of its jobs to move elsewhere in Ontario - health to Hamilton, finance to London, head office to Huntsville, etc. We need also to force most head offices out of Toronto to Hamilton., Kingston, Cornwall or Sarnia. Not only will it save Toronto, but the rest of the province.
Get out of the madhouse!!!
