    On the raceway lands, can’t a red deck T1 mountain + one drop then T2 raceway and attack. This leave 2 mana for combat trick or a heartfire hero anyway and sets you up at 2 speed at the end of T2 anyway? I don’t think you need to skip one drop

    I'm thinking there are pretty easy ways to cheese getting start your engines max speed in something like Rakdos Lord of Riots where you're already playing life drain all opponents cards. The wording is lose life during your turn which does not mean you have to do combat.

    the Aether spark is going to be a tool for control finishers: they are going to slap it on Tolarian terrors and other chunky haymakers backed up by counterspells and Ward and use it to just keep churning through the deck keeping answers in hand

    34:00 Am I reading speed wrong or can you play a start your engine then hit an opponent and go to 2speed in 1 turn? Its not there to trigger at 0 and it says if its at 1 or more increase once per turn

    Only thing I see the aetherspark being good for(in standard) is the draw. Got to put it on something with ward. But would help the colors that don’t have draw.

    I genuinely despise this set and everything it represents for contemporary MTG design philosophy. On the heels of the other 3 cosplay sets it tells me after 14 years that this isn’t the game for me anymore. I’ll enjoy my current collection/decks and hold out hope that Wizards gets back to concepts I’m a fan of.

    The problem is the marvel humor and not taking the planes seriously. The idea of a race set or space set doesn't bother me, it could be great but only if they do it right and care about the setting. All the jokes and puns come off as cringe to me. It's fine in small doses but when there's too many jokes it turns the entire set into a joke, and in turn it makes it seem like they don't care about the characters, the story or the plane. Because if they cared they would take it more seriously. That doesn't mean every set needs to be super dark, mature and without humor. Like I said in small doses there's no issue. But they've reached a point where players see in universe MTG as a sad joke, but only because WotC turned it into a mockery.

    I don't understand the first turn you play a max speed card. The way it is worded, it sounds like you play a raceway, then a desert (same turn), and you are now max speed 2. You only triggered max spped via life-loss once, but playing the max speed card got you to 1, so you would be at speed 2 on the first turn you play it, right?

    I wonder if The Aetherspark is playable in a boogles style deck. 4 mana is a lot but having the ability to draw cards in that deck like this could be good? Idk I’m tired

    Aetherdrift is probably my least favorite magic set of all time. I like very few of the cards and very little of the art. I hate the theme and whatever this story is. I just... kind of hate it? (not a fan of the mechanics either) EDIT: also the execution of this set primarily ruined it. I literally could have made a better version of this set thematically ALONE with no extra writers or assistance and they have a whole fucking department on it. EDIT2: They should have called start your engines "Velocity" so it can be reused in future sets. As-is it's a complete throwaway mechanic. (I'm so mad about this set lol)

    Duskmourn was absolutely a dressup set. The monsters/evil forces were done great. but it was done in the laziest fashion for the non-monster elements. Straight up labeling cards "Cheerleader", "Baseball Bat", "Chainsaw" "Reluctant Role Model", etc. They did nothing to incorporate horror movie tropes into the world of MTG and instead just copied and pasted them.

    I think getting to 4 speed is going to be difficult in older formats because you realistically have to survive that long as well as have the max speed payoff somehow survive to do its thing.

  • @tankdempsey1818
    @tankdempsey1818 2 години тому

    Could go for quick SYE in older formats too. Gingerbrute, Bomat Courier, and Chancellor of the Forge can pretty consistently get you to 2 speed on turn one if there is a good enough payoff.

  • @Hemlocker

    Richard is right. The Aetherspark is bad. A single bounce/kill spell on the creature you attach it to timewalks you. The only way it draws you 2 cards per turn is if you have it attached to a 5+ power creature which is dealing combat damage every turn and neither the equipment nor the creature itself are being interacted with in any way. If you're in that position, drawing 2 per turn is winmore, and you'd rather spend that 4 mana on 2 Up The Beanstalks. Such a disappointing card for how much it was hyped.

    I wonder if the speed mechanic is going to lead to more control heavy matches. Prevent your opponent from gaining speed, if there's a strong deck. If you're playing speed yourself, the longer the game goes, the more advantage you'll get from your speed cards because in a longer game you're more likely to achieve max speed.

    I can see a home for The Aetherspark in an extra combat deck. Put all that extra loyalty on damage, -10 to add all that mana, cast more extra combats or activate aggravated assault. Rinse and repeat. It does seem to go infinite with aggravated assault now that I think about it if you have enough damage to add that much loyalty and can get through.
