Hazel Now over a year old and starting steadiness
Looking back to last year's videos, you'll see Hazel at six months old. At that point, we were getting her used to her owner, Rick, walking back and forth and going to her on point. This is part of early steadiness. At a young age, I let the pup chase after the flush to build a bird drive and have fun. In this video, we start to work on more advanced steadiness. Hazel has one hunting season under her belt and is ready to move forward. I start the steadiness with the dog on whoa. No search and no point. I put a half hitch on the dog to help it remain steady. After doing this for a few sessions, there will be no lead on Hazel. Once she is steady without a lead, I'll take her out into the field, let her search, let her point, and then put the half hitch on to let her know we are transferring what we learned on whoa to an actual hunting situation. Please look at Hazel's tail during the upcoming sessions, you'll see she is very happy learning this. I do it this way because the dog understands what I'm asking of it, and there is not a lot of pressure applied.

Brooks holding steady after a few sessions.
Переглядів 2993 місяці тому
This is Brooks, now six months old and after a few sessions. His owner, Chuck, has kept working on whoa at home. During the last couple of sessions, he held longer and longer. This morning, as you can see, he is holding steady and letting us walk around him, talk, and move back and forth. I can now launch the bird before he breaks. When he doesn't break point, and the bird flushes on its own, h...
Brooks Five Months Old Starting to Point
Переглядів 4753 місяці тому
This is Brooks. I had already introduced him to live birds by releasing them from my hand and wing-locking a bird in the field. Then, I introduced him to a bird launcher using a bumper in the launcher. I did this in his earlier sessions when on a lead. In this video, he is starting to point, but you can see he breaks for the bird after a short point and movement by his owners. In the next coupl...
Brooke and Rylee Steadiness

Today I trained with thirteen-year-old Brooke and her pup Rylee. Brook's entire family spent the weekend at our gun dog ranch. I didn't know her mom, Peggy, was taking this video. But it is a perfect example of how we work into steadiness with a young pup. This is Brooke and Rylee's third session of the weekend and the second to last bird of the session. In the first session, Rylee did not poin...
Hazel without lead steady on point.

This is the second video with six-month-old Hazel. As you can see, the lead is off, and Hazel is doing great. I have her owner walk back and forth to her to get her used to that movement. Then I have him pet her to keep her calm, all the time praising her and telling her whoa. Then I have him walk in front of her to get her used to him going in front to flush a bird. She remains steady, so I st...

Introduction to Backing
Переглядів 9742 роки тому
Sorry about the wind. This is how I start the introduction to backing using a backing/silhouette machine. You can also put a dog in the whoa/pointing position behind an obstacle and then bring your pup around the obstacle to see the pointing dog. If you have your pup solid on whoaing, teaching backing is easy. You just do repetitions of whoaing your pup whenever it sees a dog on point. I like t...

Water entry rock technique

Thought I'd share a technique I use to entice pups that don't care for bumpers. Many of them will not enter the water for a bumper, but do know how to swim. Remember in the NAVHDA NA test your pup does not have to retrieve the bumper, only enter the water and swim. What I do if I have a pup that doesn't want to go in for a bumper is I entice it with rocks. This is only after the pup has learned...

    The joys of uncooperative birds that don't want to fly. I quit using pen raised quail with my griff because of that. Pigeons and chukars worked way better for me out of the launcher. I only used pheasants once or twice because of the cost.

    I was overwhelmed at first at teaching the Whoa command. I thought it would be very tough to teach my dog. But it was fairly easy and he, (WPG), picked it up quickly. I used the "Suitcase Handle" method and then progressed to a check cord then on to free running with the E collar. It took less then one week. Probably the most important command your dog will ever use and can save his life in certain situations, (Running onto a road).

If they bring the bird back, great; if not, no problem. No pressure in the field until FF is complete. Once FF is complete, the retrieve will be enforced. No, I don't do any other games until FF is completed. I have 5 videos on FF that show my complete process. I will not be posting anymore on FF. I may post other videos.

    I have a sport dog e collar with 8 settings, vibrate, and beeper I've tried vibrate and it doesn't faze her but at the same time the level 1 stimulation at times seems far too much were she has a bad reaction such as vocalizing

    • @georgedecostaandthehunting7629
      @georgedecostaandthehunting7629 2 роки тому

      Some Sport Dog e-collars have a programing setting for Low, Medium, High. What I mean by this is you can be on setting 1, but it is on setting 1 high. Or you can be on setting 1, which is setting 1 low. Also, Sport Dog has models for "stubborn" dogs; I can't remember what they call them. Those models are of higher stimulation than the standard model. Check your instruction manual to see if your model has that type of programming, maybe you can lower the mode. If that is not the case I would look for an e-collar that has much more of a range. Hope this helped, George

    So.. I have a Griffon coming, welp date 12/27. I want to use upland and duck. Why do you wait for a season of pounting to start on duck? I want to do the best by new puppy. Thanks,

    • @georgedecostaandthehunting7629
      @georgedecostaandthehunting7629 2 роки тому

      I just got back from Kansas and Oklahoma, hunting pheasant and quail. Sorry for the late response. If you are primarily a waterfowl hunter and not much of an upland hunter, then getting your pup on ducks the first year is probably good for your. But... if you want a really steady pointing dog it's a good idea to get it on lots of birds that it has to point before using it on waterfowl. (This is a general statement for Griffs and some other versatile breeds.) Here's what I often see happen. Griffs love to please their owner. They bond quickly and closely to their hunting companion and will try to do what they think their hunting companion wants. Waterfowl hunting is almost all retrieving and sitting still. Your pup stays close to you and then your send it for the retrieve. When it makes the retrieve you give it lots of praise. As you should. If you haven't instilled the search and point in your pup before all those retrieves a Griff will many times believe the retrieve is what makes you happy and what is primary to the hunt. So, when you take your dog out to the uplands it stays close and when it gets to the bird instead of holding its point, it thinks, I'll just grab this bird and take it to my best friend, that what he likes. Now you have a pup that wants to take the bird out instead of holding steady until the flush. IMO, it's important to establish that the point is primary and the retrieve secondary with a Griff. So, upland first and then waterfowl... in most cases. Hope this made sense.
