Water entry rock technique

Thought I'd share a technique I use to entice pups that don't care for bumpers. Many of them will not enter the water for a bumper, but do know how to swim.
Remember in the NAVHDA NA test your pup does not have to retrieve the bumper, only enter the water and swim. What I do if I have a pup that doesn't want to go in for a bumper is I entice it with rocks. This is only after the pup has learned to enter the water and swim across to its owner. The pup has confidence in swimming, but doesn't like bumpers. I'll toss rocks in the water to entice the pup to go out and see what's there.
I'll then toss a bumper in the water, pup doesn't have to pick it up, but sometimes it will, when it does I'll load on the praise. If it doesn't I'll do the same think, but toss out a bird. The pup will almost always bring back the bird. After we have the pup bringing back the bird I'll zip-tie bird wings to a bumper and get the pup to bring that back. Always loading on the praise when the pup comes back with the bird, or bumper with wings.
After we have the pup bringing the bumper with wings on it back we'll remove the wings. Now the pup has learned the game and knows what to do. They almost always by this point retrieve the bumper from the water. If they don't no big deal. We have them, entering the water, swimming and retrieving a bird from the water. We'll FF them when they get older and then they'll retrieve anything we send them for.
