JOURNAL ENTRY 5/23-28/17 THE BAHAMAS
In the last episode we unfortunately found that the diesel engine had sprung a leak somehow and was making quite a mess on the floor and in the bilge! Come to find out the fitting for the fuel return line got split open causing the fuel to spray wildly. We were able to find a repair shop to get the piece welded back together and were able to get the diesel mess cleaned up using lots of dish soap and a deodorizing spray.
Now that we have the engine back in running order it is time for us to make our way back up the Florida coast to Fort Pierce, where we started our journey back in February. On the way out of the Palm Beach anchorage we passed a famously known cruising yacht named Venus. We didn't film any of us motor sailing along the coast, because there really wasn't much to see, but picked our story up again as we were entering the Fort Pierce inlet.
There was a strong 4 knot current flowing from the Fort Pierce inlet as the tide was going out which made for a very slow entry. The bay was very crowded with people and boats due to it bing a holiday weekend. Tomorrow is Memorial day, so we're pretty sure the marina office will be closed. We will anchor for a couple of day and then go in on Tuesday to talk with them. We just hope and pray that we don't repeat the same mistake and find ourselves in the same stressful situation by wrapping the keel AGAIN while anchored in this bay.

    Excellent video ! ..I am considering an alberg 30 w/ non-original tabernacle, and a cut-down mast from a C and C. The tabernacle consists of a thick flat stainless steel plate bolted atop and through the coach roof and through the horizontal wooden support beam directly underneath the coach roof. Welded to port and starboard edge-sides of the base plate are additional, raised, vertical stainless steel plates. The mast sits between the raised plates and is held there by two bolts each of which run through one plate then the mast and out the other plate. In the above-described arrangement the bottom of the mast remains suspended (above the horizontal coach-roof-bolted plate) by the two horizontal bolts and does not touch down upon the horizontal plate. I can only suppose that this was done so as to allow the mast to be lowered/raised by removing one horizontal bolt and rotating the mast around the remaing bolt(?).. I wonder if you might let me know if such a set-up is unstable, given that the bottom of the mast is suspended. (I have only experience, many years ago, sailing a little 12 foot sailboat).

    what would freak me out pretty quickly is that everything is the same in every direction. no visible horizon, the water being almost like glass, no point of reference or orientation of ANY form, there is absolutely zero air movement and nothing around, so on top of all that it is also completely silent. horrible. if the air was less hazy i could maybe deal with it but the accumulation of factors in this situation here would give me a panic attack.

    Very impressive. My son just bought a 1983 Catalina 25 and has already decided it's too small and is looking at the Ericson 26. Seeing all the modifications you did to this boat really makes it sea worthy for long trips, something he'd like to do as well. Thanks for sharing.

    Since fresh water is critical to one's survival, how could a few hundred dollars for a repair kit deter one from buying it? Really poor judgement.

    It's amazing how quiet it is. I hiked Delicate Arch in Utah years ago and when there weren't people around, just being out in the middle of the desert is so much quieter than you expect it to be. Same here. I expected some wind noises, water noises, but nope. It's so quiet it seems to isolate and amplify every noise you guys make. Crazy.

    Middle of the Ocean and you can see the bottom? If I google it and ask the overage I get an answer of about 3,000 feet deep. I know there are some Major Deep places but, what would one actually think, How deep is most of the Ocean? The main belief would be NO MATTER where you are the ocean is Deep as F. But I love that you say you are in the middle of the ocean and can see the bottom so clearly. Wish I could see it. Edit: @8:00 minutes, Why not just jump in the Ocean?

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle Рік тому

      Hahaha yeah we try to have as much fun as possible while out on the boat. Imagine being out on the water. You can't see land in any direction. You feel so distant from reality. It's like being on another planet or in outer space. You will start to feel like you are in the middle of the ocean. Just you and the boat. This day was particularly neat with the ocean being so calm. Truly an amazing experience. We noticed a ton of small jelly fish swimming around the boat and we didn't know much about them...basically we didn't want to risk getting stung...so we relaxed in the "dinghy tub" instead. hahaha Thanks for watching our video and for taking the time to reach out to us! We really appreciate it!

      Thanks for watching our videos. Living aboard and sailing on Turtle was so rewarding for us. We will cherish the memories made, skills learned, and adventures had for the rest of our lives. After sailing in the Bahamas we sailed back to Florida and sold Turtle. We then moved to Utah for about a year and a half before moving back to southern Oregon. Randall has been going to school to become a licensed electrician. We realized that having a solid career to fall back on, for when we aren't sailing full time, would be the responsible thing to do. It's been a very stressful, challenging several years, but we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. We are excited to be looking at potential boats and can't wait to get back out on the water. Thanks again for watching!

    10 boats in an anchorage, only 1 is grounded. The grounded boat will probably be hit before the others. Lightning strikes start from the ground up, not from the cloud down. The direct path to ground with an air gap between the mast and the ground is the way to go. The air gap will limit the charge build up, but still allow a strike to pass to ground.
