JOURNAL ENTRY 4/23-24/17 THE BAHAMAS
We spent the night at egg island anticipating sailing towards the Abacos today, but with the wind speed increasing and the seas turning rough, we don't think it is a good idea to try to make a passage and potentially a land fall on a leeward shore in such rough conditions. Especially when land fall involves transiting a cut on a leeward shore complicated by tricky tides. And if there's one thing that we’ve learned in our time sailing the Bahamas, is that a weather forecast older than 12 hours might as well be from last week.
Our biggest concern is finding an anchorage that has complete protection from all sides, because our most recent weather forecast dowloaded this morning on our Inreach Satellite communicator, shows the wind completely boxing the compass within the next 24 hours as well as increasing speed to over 30 knots. We were so relieved to look at the charts and see the dream anchorage inside of Royal Island just a few miles away.
That night we experienced the most intense thunder and lightning storm we have ever been in! We have never seen anything like it in our entire lives. The wind indeed boxed the compass as forecasted and there is no way we would have been as safe at any other anchorage in the area. We were so glad that we installed the lightning rod to the top of our mast and grounded everything on the boat to the lightning ground dissipating plate on the bottom of the boat. It was a scary long night, but we survived and so did all of our electronics.

Yours is the very best sailing channel with well detailed practical knowledge and skills on an attainable dream-sized boat. As a new owner of a 23 ft, thank you. :)
Thanks you so much! We really appreciate your kindness and support. We have loved being able to share our story and experiences with everyone through our videos and have really enjoyed connecting with our viewers. We wish you all the best with your new boat! Fair Winds!
You two are awesome adventurers.
Very jealous of your grounding system. That is still the scariest night of our last 2 years. Miss you guys.
S/V Rascal good to hear from you! Thank you so much for watching our videos and for sharing this one with your friends! We hope to not be in such a bad storm again and we are glad to hear that you haven't been either! It's scary stuff. Hope your sailing adventure is a great one! Be safe!
Hey y'all... is this channel still active? I just found it and am really enjoying the adventures... continuing to inspire me on my journey! :)
Thank you so much for watching our videos! We are currently working, saving money, and dreaming of our next sailboat. We have great plans in the works and definitely will be creating content again in the future!
That was a great video glad you found a safe place to stay for the storm. Save sailing and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday
Thank you so much! We hope you have a great Thanksgiving too! We really were lucky to have been so close the most perfect anchorage just at the right moment! It's crazy to think what the night would have been like if we had stayed at Egg Island one more night. We also heard the next morning that the northern part of Eleuthera lost power for most of the night and into the morning. It was such a scary, but cool experience. Thanks for leaving us a comment!!
Glad you guys are okay! Hope the weather clears up.
Thanks!
It’s Sunday night where I’m at. Alarm set for 4 AM. Monday is coming.... but after your video, I wish it was stuck on the little boat in a rainstorm 😂
Hahaha We hear ya! Monday mornings are the hardest. Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great week!
That was some crazy lightning!
It really was! We don't have lightning like that on the West coast, so it was definitely a scary experience. Thanks for watching and for leaving us a comment! We really appreciate it!
glad your safe. scary night!.
Us too! It was like nothing we had ever seen before! Such a scary, but cool experience! Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment! We really appreciate it!
Hook some jumper cables on your shrouds and drop the other ends in the water
We had no need to that. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment!
sailing monks... great video
LOL Thanks for watching and for leaving us a comment! We appreciate it and are glad to have you along for our journey!
What are you guys up to now? Back in Oregon? Moved to Florida? What's the best way to keep up with you guys?
Currently we are back to work, saving money, and planning our next big adventure in life. Best way to keep up with us, our story and future adventures is here on our UA-cam Channel and our Instagram. Thanks for watching and being part of the adventure! We still have a lot more to share!
Hey guys, your not going to believe this but I have a heavily customized Ericson 26 myself imagine that. Did you connect your pulpits rudder and stanchions and port chain plate to the grounding plate its for the cone of protection. When your getting into a shit storm like that, actually before disconnect all of your hi tech gear if its got a chip and you can live without it disconnect and if you have a metal box put it in there if you can live without it for a while. (I saw your safe use it for that stuff the shotgun won't blow a chip LOL)
We should talk or email I would love to show you what I've done to my E26
Sail on good to see another E26
E26 Savannah
Dave
Dave, that is so fun to hear! We love it when we can connect with our viewers, especially with people with similar boats as ours! To answer your question, we grounded everything but the rudder. The rudder is one solid piece of aluminum and we didn't want to combine it to dissimilar metals which would give us electrolysis. Thank you so much for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment! We really appreciate you being part of our sailing adventure!
Can you detail your set-up on the grounding in the boat pls? I have a restore project boat and want to be as safe as possible from being hit by lightening, but I don't know much about how to fix that. Thanx in advance, SV Tiger Lily, Norway
Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment with a question. We will try to answer it the best we can. Lightning grounding is a very voodoo grey area. I don't know if anyone truly understands all aspects of the lightning ground issue. There are several websites dedicated to the marine lightning issue, and we just took the bits and pieces that we liked from each one and cobbled together our own "good enough" system. I did a months worth of research on the topic and was nearly as confused at the end as when I started, but there did seem to be several universally excepted notions on the topic. Namely that all shrouds and stanchions should be linked together to a grounding plate no less than 100 square inches or to an exposed lead keel. We also chose to go a bit above and beyond and added a lightning rod with a rounded tip to the mast head. Some "experts" would suggest to do more preparations than what we did, others would suggest that our preparations were over the top. We feel like we landed somewhere in the middle.
Starting at the top, I riveted a 1/2'' solid aluminum rod to the mast that extended several inches higher than the VHF Aerial antennae, which I rounded and polished in accordance to best practice for attracting a lightning strike. Then I grounded the mast extrusion itself, keeping the wire runs as absolutely straight as possible to prevent the massive power of a strike from jumping the grounding cable half way through it's route. I also grounded the side-stays and lifelines to the grounding plate. I would have liked to have connected the backstays to the rudder and the forestay to the grounding system as well, but I had to draw a line somewhere, and figured that I had done enough to at least prevent side flashes. I wasn't worried about saving the radio or building a faraday cage to protect electronics from EMP, just my personal safety.
I used .375" x 2.5" x 36" copper plate for the ground plate with 3/8" Silicon bronze machine screws to attach it to the hull and provide means of attaching the bonding cables. That adds up to approximately 100 square inches, which is about the minimum recommended area for dissipating a lightning strike in salt water. I also glued the plate to the hull with 4200 just to be sure it wasn't going anywhere. I left the corners sharp to encourage the strike to dissipate easily. Check out these links to see pictures and to read more about our lightning-grounding set up on my blog.

What about fish, lobster & conch?
Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us comments! While in the Exumas we weren't able to spearfish much because it is part of the Land and Sea Park, but when we were in approved areas we actually caught and ate a lot of fish. Kenzie didn't like eating the fish all that much, but it was something I couldn't live without. My preferred method is using a Hawaiian Pole Spear. It was very satisfying. One of my favorite spots to spearfish while in The Bahamas was at Rose Island, which is near Nassau.
What about a hammock to sleep on when it is really wavy?
Yeah we tried that once....LOL There wasn't a whole lot of room down below and you will still swing heavily from side to side. We loved setting it up on deck though! Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us an awesome comment!
Reading , boat chores and checking over rigging , gathering amps for the battery’s and tidying boat , plenty to do , payers to turn off electronics in lightning can zap you and stuff the electrics turn lights off and wait , you liven the boat and become a target
Thanks for watching mate!
Oh no
Thanks for watching!
You need to learn to fish..
There is food all around you...
