    JOURNAL ENTRY 5/20-22/17 THE BAHAMAS
    We have been back in Florida for just shy of a week. We are still actively trying to sell Turtle as quickly as possible, but haven't gotten any calls yet. Kenzie put together a video showing all of the upgrades we made to our boat in hopes of grabbing people's attention.
    Here is a link to the video: • 1985 Ericson 26 Sailbo...
    On day 6 of being anchored at Palm Beach, near Peanut Island, we decided that we would motor out to sea so we could dump the toilet. We hadn't quite made it to the other side of the anchorage when Kenzie noticed that the floor inside the cabin looked wet. As she went down below it was quickly made known that the diesel engine had sprung a leak somehow and was making quite the mess on the floor and in the bilge! We quickly shut the engine off and hoisted the mainsail so we could safely make our way back to where we had been anchored.
    Upon examination we found that the fitting for the fuel return line got split open causing the fuel to spray wildly. We later realized that the malfunction must have occurred when Randall was placing the companionway steps back over the engine on a previous day. We are now stranded in the ICW until we can get the part fixed and we are worried that this could potentially cause problems while trying to get our boat sold!

    We just finished watching all of your videos and are hoping that you are both doing well. We loved your honest, forthright presentation and the way you bore up under some pretty challenging conditions while keeping your good nature and basic optimism intact. Good lessons for all of us! We have cruised in a sailboat and loved it-however, an RV can also provide some wonderful adventures, as we found when we drove across the country in a Rialta (22' motorhome). Stay healthy and enjoy!

      Thank you so much for watching all of our videos and for taking the time to reach out to us! We really appreciate your support. We did sell Turtle after our sailing trip to The Bahamas and after living in southern Utah for about a year and a half, we bought ourselves a 25' Fly Cloud Airstream trailer to live in. We love that we get to continue living a simple life, which in turn will hopefully allow us to save up for our next sailboat someday. We've been stationary in Oregon while Randall continues his education, but would love to go on some epic road trip adventures if we ever get the chance to.

    We absolutely lived your videos. We started watching st the beginning. What 3 years ago. What an amazing adventure. And the never day die spirit. True endurance but the Bahamas wad worth all the effort . In 2018 we adopted a 15 yo boy dec15th, jumped on a free 1984 S2 29'11" dec 20th. After 2 weeks refit $2500 and with no blue water or overnight experience we sailed 3400 from Mexico around the gulf ICW to Florida and then the Exumas. All of them. 6 months of grid in paradise. With at least as many challenges u guys went thru plus a little tornado that dropped down our mast in Texas intracoastal. Any way.. thanks for the inspiration. What are u guys doing now?

    Wondering if the full strength Citric Acid Solvent that Custodial Supply houses sell would clean up the diesel. Best part about it is fresh water wash-up.

      We do too! Nothing exciting is happening for us right now. We are just working and going to school, trying to get ahead in life so we can go on our next adventure. It's requiring a lot of patients.....and it's driving us insane not being out on the water sailing to beautiful destinations. Hahaha but we'll get there, someday! Thanks for hanging around with us for so long!

    Diesel stink is always in every boat I've ever been on. You get used to a little bit of it, but those fresh leaks can be a beast. Kitty litter can really help in some situations to absorb diesel. Just don't let it get into a bilge pump. I always wrap a bilge pump with an aluminum screen to keep stuff from clogging them. Thanks for another video. You must be about out of footage though, right?

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing this bit of information with us. We were fortunately able to get the diesel mess cleaned up without any long lasting damages to the floor and were lucky the problem with the fuel return line was an easy fix. We are almost out of footage and probably will only be posting 2 or maybe 3 more videos to tie up the story. Hopefully now that Kenzie has been laid off work due tot he Covid-19 virus, she will have plenty of time to edit the end of our story and get the videos posted. Unfortunately though we really didn't film much during the months of trying to sell the boat, so it's kind of hard to put together videos that will tell a good story of what life was like for us. We were hot, miserable, living out of our truck, hanging with the bums in the library trying to stay cool and showering on the beach. We did sell the boat though so we can at least show that! LOL Thanks again for watching our videos!

      @@SailingTurtle Oh man, I lived in a van for a while in Florida. Not too much fun or very comfortable. I am certainly sorry to hear about Kenzie not having a job. When the lockdowns end hopefully jobs will pick back up. Unfortunately the suicides and lives shortened by the stress of the economic burden of shutting everything down might take more lives than Covid-19. Hopefully there is still income in your family. Hey I am almost to the point where I can get a bigger sailboat so the offer of sailing time on the boat still stands if I can get something nice enough. I might be able to get my son and maybe a daughter to sail with me, but my wife isn't super keen on the idea. Maybe when we get something comfortable enough she will changer her mind and bring the other two. That might limit me to just some winter time cruising over a few months. This might put me short handed where I could use the experinced help of someone else to ease the burden. I'll watch for the rest of your videos, and I hope things go well for you two in the near future. The chance of dying by Covid-19 for you two are extremely small Probably less than a hundreth of a percent..It really is taking mostly people over 80 with other extreme medical conditions!

      Well....our sailing The Bahamas story came to an end. We were doing really good at posting our weekly videos for about a year and a half, but unfortunately started to slack off when I started working full time and just couldn't keep up with our editing and posting schedule anymore. I tried posting as often as possible, but then quickly realized that we were running out of sailing content. Fast forward a few years and we find ourselves back in Oregon living in a nice 25' Flying Cloud Airstream trailer. Randall is going to school to further his career, and we are both working full time jobs trying to save money for our next big adventure. We have been researching for our next sailboat and can't wait to get back out on the water. We hope to have some smaller adventure along the way. Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to reach out to us. We really appreciate it!

    I had a diesel leak on a return line this summer didn't notice it untill it made a mess in the bilge it took forever to clean it up. I get it. Hey who made your doger frame? Thanks, I hope you're doing well.

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  4 роки тому

      The dodger itself was made by a company called Artful Dodger. We couldn't find a website for them, so they might not be in business anymore. The frame structure for the dodger can be made with generic dodger parts, which can most likely be found in most marine stores. Thanks for reaching out to us and as always thanks for watching our videos!

    You reminded me of your cross country trip. After watching you fight your way through that ordeal, I knew you guys could succeed at anything. I hope things are going well. Question, how long were you guys out there sailing? Would you do it again? 👍👍👍

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  4 роки тому +1

      Man, the time that we spent in Florida waiting for the boat to sell was just as, if not more, miserable as the cross country drive at the beginning of our trip. We didn't film a whole lot of it though, probably because we were hot, miserable, hanging with the bums in the library and showering on the beach. Not exactly the fun content we would like to share. Haha But we do have about 2 or 3 more videos that we could share if Kenzie is able to edit them into telling a decent story. We'll see. We were in The Bahamas from Feb. 19th - May 15th. We spent a majority of our time in the Exumas, because of the phenomenal sailing conditions and endless number of islands to explore. We would love to go back there again if we ever get the opportunity to go sailing again in the future, and then maybe sail further south through the Caribbean. We even wouldn't mind someday sailing over to the mediterranean. We would love to see many of the places across the pond. However for right now we are still in the preparing stage of life and are working again so we can save up money for our next adventure. Another sailboat is definitely in the picture though! Thanks for watching our videos!

    • @SailingTurtle

      Selling Turtle at the end of our trip in The Bahamas was not in our original plan at all. It was a difficult decision to make and even to this day we miss our tiny sailing home very much. Turtle had been our home for the past 5 1/2 years while living on the coast of Oregon and moving to Florida was just the next step to making our sailing lifestyle more enjoyable and permanent. While in Florida motoring down the ICW we realized that we wouldn't be able to afford to live in the neighborhoods that we liked, and we didn't feel comfortable with the idea of living in the neighborhoods that we could afford to live in. While in The Bahamas, about half way through our trip, we both separately had thoughts that Florida isn't where we are supposed to be right now. We spent the second part of the trip talking about our future plans and life goals and came to the conclusion that we had taken Turtle as far as we were personally comfortable going, and that in order for us to move on to a larger boat in the future, one that would allow us to sail to further away places, we would first have to let go of Turtle. We sold Turtle in Florida after our trip, moved to Utah for about a year and half, purchased a 25' Flying Cloud Airstream trailer and moved back to Oregon. We are currently working again, saving money, researching our next sailboat, and just trying to get through life as Randall attends school. We definitely can not wait for the day that we can set sail again! Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment. We love being able to connect with our viewers and can't thank you enough for your kind support.

    Randall and Kinsey, you had the start of a Million $ Vlog...such potential.............Wondering why it appears you stopped in 2017...after 5 years of building a fantastic boat Turtle. I would have died on that boat after investing time, money and interesting adventures....You guys are definitely not buy and hold type investors....I hope you are both well, it has been great following you guys on your vacation......Not sure why newer vid are being posted as of like 10 mos. ago...It's like Amazon cancelling the show Patriot after only like 2 seasons....WTH , like a great show, but the writer's ADHD had him move on to another project...I cancelled my Prime account....Hope you still have some vid left....You dragged Turtle across the country for godsake!!

      We have loved being able to share our sailing adventure with everyone and honestly can't believe the positive response we have gotten from so many. Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to reach out to us. We would absolutely LOVE to keep sharing sailing videos and really hope that we will be able to again here in the near future. While sailing in The Bahamas on our 26' sailboat we knew that it was a lifestyle that we wanted to continue, however we also realized that we would need a bigger boat to comfortably sail to the further away destinations on our wishlist. It was extremely hard for us to say goodbye to Turtle since it had been our home for so many years, but luckily we were both able to see the bigger picture and knew that in order for us to move on to bigger and better things we would have to be willing to let go. We are currently on track with our goals and are working hard to make our next big adventure a reality. We will definitely start posting new content as we are able to. Thanks again for your support! We really appreciate it.

    • @SailingTurtle

      We found that the break in the fuel return line was caused from us placing the companionway steps back over the engine on a previous day. Once we figured out what had happened we could only think how lucky we were that it didn't happen while cruising in The Bahamas, because it would have been very difficult to get fixed. We were glad that there wasn't any serious damage with the diesel engine and were also fortunate that we were able to easily clean up the diesel mess in the interior of the cabin without any long lasting damages to the floor. Thank you for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment! We really appreciate your support!
