How we Raise and Lower our own Mast on an Ericson 26 Sailboat

  • This video was made to show how we raise and lower the mast on our Ericson 26 sailboat without using a crane. We've added a hinged mast-step and also temporary side stays and brackets in order for it to be raised and lowed quickly and efficiently. Although this system has worked well for us, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND this system to anyone else thinking about raising their own mast. Please do your own research and know what you and your own boat are capable of handling.

I'm about to buy a sailboat & i have no idea how to sail. I'm going to live on it also so I'll be watching as many videos as possible before I take it into the Ocean.
    PS, I can't wait 👍✌️😂

Thank you for your video. I just made a mast stepper in my wood shop for my hobie getaway. Seeing this system working on a much large boat gives me the confidence that this system is safe for my mast. I do have to figure out how to mount some temp side stays to prevent the mast from going side to side. Not a problem when I have second person, but most of the time I'll be solo. Thanks again.

Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us such a great comment. Those side stays were definitely the hardest part to make. Hope it all works out well for you. Good luck and fair winds!

Great detail in this video Randall. I too built a single person raising system for my 26' sailboat but I think the mast is shorter than yours. Works great for me though. Keep up the great videos, I love watching you guys.

That's fantastic! We love the freedom it gives us to do it ourselves. It's fun to hear from a fellow 26'er who can relate to us and our story. Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment! We really appreciate your support!

The launches I've been to have yard arms. The biggest mast I did with one of those was a 24 foot keel stepped boat. It felt like the limit so your longer boat but deck stepped would be similar.

Hey guys...that was great and I commend your efforts but there is easier way. IL try and be brief and follow up with a video. The side plates can be made out of cable with a hinging point. Ill have to show you with a photo. Use an A frame for the lifting pole and gravety will center the mast always. Ive done my Cal 2-27 when I used to trailer it everywhere and have the system down to 1/2 hour from start to finish. I would love to share it with everyone but a video will be the best way. Seeing is believing. Great videos.

I use the spinnaker pole with a spinnaker halyard attached to the end of the spinnaker pole. Have another line that attaches to the end of the spinnaker pole that is led down to a pulley where the jib tack attaches and then it leads back to winch in the cockpit. Of course I installed Harken 32 self tailing winches as the primaries. There are stabilizer lines on the cabin top inline with the pivot pin on the mast step that are tensioned at the cockpit. I use a mast up crutch in the cockpit to get the mast up higher to start with. I can raise and lower the mast on my Ericson 25+ by myself. How do launch your boat, with a line or an extendable tongue? Do you have keel guides? Ryan

Hi I made a similar system for 24 foot boat with a tabernacle and gin poles, it is the most nerves part of sailing lol

Impressive. I've hand raised my Macgregor 26c mast. I just got a Ericson 25, and hope to remove the mast, but I guess unlike Macgregor the Ericson masts are too heavy for 2-5 people to hand lift to vertical? . . How much is crane time to remove mast I wonder? thanks.

    • @SailingTurtle

We are able to put our sailboat on a trailer when it's not in the water. We raise and lower the mast while it's on the trailer, because it is more stable than being in the water, and the winch that we use is mounted on the trailer's tower. Most of the pictures and video clips show'n in this video were from when we lived in Oregon, on the west coast of the U.S. but because it is on a trailer, we can raise and lower the mast anywhere. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment!

Yeah.... so we actually didn't think to make this video till AFTER we sold Turtle. We kept getting asked in the comments of our other videos how we would raise our own mast, so we decided to sit down and try our best to explain it. Since we no longer owned the boat we weren't able to just film us doing it step by step with proper instruction, so we had to compile every bit of old footage we had from previous years. We unfortunately didn't have those photos to include. Thanks for watching!
