The Down-to-Earth Gardener
Приєднався 29 січ 2023
Hello, my name is Diane and welcome to my garden!
I live in the beautiful coastal area of Northeast England and have a cottage garden that I love, as well as a shady courtyard, a small rear garden, a front border that is exposed to the elements, and a greenhouse.
Join me in my garden where I'll talk you through everything from planting seeds and potting on in the greenhouse to creating a border, planting up perennials, pruning, splitting and everything in between. I take a gentle, wildlife-friendly approach to gardening and I'll show you how I try to attract as many different species of birds and insects as I can.
I'll also do some tours of my garden throughout the seasons to mark the changes, as well as visit my sister's walled garden, my daughter's low-maintenance townhouse garden, and my other daughter's new-build, child-friendly garden, all of which bring joy in their own way.
I'd love to hear from you, so please do get in touch, and I'll see you in the garden!

Whether you're short on space or you just want to see more of your flowers, this is a great way to display your spring bulbs because it raises them up to eye level and saves the smaller ones from being buried in your borders. ua-cam.com/video/6n2G3eZww7g/v-deo.html
October garden tidy up
Переглядів 37221 годину тому
Today we're back in my sister Shirley's beautiful garden and we're going to be doing a spot of tidying up in the borders. There is a Mallow to cut back and a decision to be made as to what to do with a Fatsia Japonica that is threatening to take over the whole of a border.😁 Shirley was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease MND almost nine years ago but still takes every opportunity to get out int...

Well it's that time of year again; when our gardens are covered in the most beautiful leaves and we begin the process of clearing them from our paths and lawns and wondering what we are going to do with all of them. In this video I'm going to show you the simplest way I have found to collect leaves and also how to speed up the process of making leaf mould. 😀

Hi there! Today I thought I would give you a quick tour around my greenhouse to show you what plants I have in there, what seeds I've been sowing this Autumn to give me a head start in the garden next spring, and how I care for them over the winter months 😊. ua-cam.com/video/jpnKQdcR5Z4/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ngZmEbcP5B0/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/RQIJp-HitSk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/V...

Well today I finally managed to get in to the white garden and had a good tidy out. It gave me the chance to see which plants were doing well and also made me reassess some of the larger, more established plants. Planting up a shady corner

Thinking about what you can see in your garden from your house is of particular importance for anyone with mobility issues who can't get out into the garden or, like my sister, can only get out into the garden with help. Today we're re-visiting my sister Shirley's garden, where we are going to plant some new plants in a very shady corner of her garden so that she can see them from her house. Sh...
Where do you store your spent pots?

In late spring and mid-summer I always find myself looking for places to keep pots of plants and bulbs that have gone over: They've given their all for this year but I need to keep them somewhere, because I know that they will all grow back next year. And there lies the question: Where do you store them until next year? Well in this video I'll show you where I store mine. Hope it gives you some...

Just came across your video and such a brilliant video it is!! I have the majority, even your little seat thing but havent used it yet, the children are zooming up and down our hall on it, we have over 60ft of hall so they're having the best craic (fun) using it 😂 ive also used it for delivering the washing to the bedrooms as have a bad back! Another thing or 2 would be special pens that dont fade in the sunlight which i have to get, i use wooden lolly sticks as labels and have you seen charles dowding seed trays? They're made from exceptionally durable plastic that you can stand on or even drive over so a great investment! They're called cd15/cd30 😊 from containerwise, may be you already have them! I love your bag for all your bits, something i never thought of getting!! But i might just try and sew 1 up as a winter project! I will look forward to watching other videos of yours , hello from Ireland 😊
Well hello there! It's lovely to hear from you and thanks so much for taking the time to leave me a comment. It's very much appreciated. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video. I certainly had fun making it for you. That sounds just the kind of game my grandchildren would love. I best not mention it to them 😁. Do you think that might be how mine really broke? 🤔 Hope you enjoy my other videos. Bye for now 😊
Some great ideas thank you. x
You’re welcome 😊
Brilliant share Diane!!! Personally, right now, I am going over to Amazon to get me some red handled snips and scissors 😃
Great idea Susie 😀
What a great video Diane; where can we get the tool organiser you have in your shed please? I am a relatively tidy gardener, whilst my hubby could do with organising help!, brilliant ...thank you.
Hi Julie. Lovely to hear from you. I think I bought it at Wickes either last year or the year before. I'll have a look online and send you a link if I find one 😀
Great ideas Diane and presentation tips. Lovely video 😊
Thanks so much Tracey! Glad you enjoyed it 😀
Many nice ideas! My mom always started her holiday shopping in January! I’m not as organized. Enjoyed watching your video on such a horrible day for America, it was a welcome distraction. I’m a knitter, so I will definitely knit some of those fingerless gloves, now that I know how to measure them. My son once bought me flower seed packets as a gift, and I still save seeds from the plants I grew, so it was the gift that keeps on giving. 🌿😀🌸
Hi there. I am so very very sorry. I too needed to be distracted from the news and so I spent the day editing this video. Let me know how the knitting project goes 😀
Oh my goodness, what happened???
What a great video Diane. Lots of lovely ideas for presents. I always think us gardeners are easy to buy for as you can go as expensive or cheap as you want. When my nephew was little he bought me some packets of seeds and they were one of my best presents. One of the tools I use a lot is a Hori Hori knife. My dad was horrified when he heard how much it was and said an old bread knife would do the same thing! I also use my trug all the time. That's a fabulous monkey puzzle tree in your neighbour's garden. I'd love one but my garden is too small.
I've seen those knives Wendy. They look terrifying! Somehow the knife doesn't go with the image of you that I have in my head. I imagine you more with snips😀 . My neighbour's gardener hates that tree. She wanted it pruned last year and he was moaning to anyone that passed and was showing them all his scratches 😂.
So many great ideas,I’m going to look for the welly socks here in the USA, or break down and make some.😊
Hope you find them Tina. You'll never want to take them off. 😀
A very useful video that you have obviously put a lot of thought into. Great gift ideas for gardeners!! Brilliant - thank you!
That's so nice of you. Thank you and I'm glad you found it helpful. Thanks also for taking the time to leave me some positive feedback. Much appreciated. 😀
thank you, some great ideas, I hope Santa hears this !!!!🤩
Me too Mairead! Thank you x
Those bulbs are going to look great on your ladder Diane. One thing that makes me so irritated is a so called indelible marker pen that doesn't work. I've even had some that work on a few labels but not them all. Andrew and Paul on the Mad about Gardening channel have a little hand held machine that prints their labels and I keep wondering if I should splash out on one. I've been planting Tulip bulbs today as it's been nice and dry outside. Just hope the squirrels don't dig them up! Hope you have a lovely week. xxx
Thanks Wendy. I'm with you on the indelible pen anger. I too get disproportionately angry with them😁. The machine sounds intriguing but definitely something that I would immediately lose. Hope you had a lovely weekend. Diane x
Bravo Diane I just love bulb planting, the promise of things to come after the dark cold days of winter. I like topping mine with horticultural grit the last bag I bought was dark granite as it was all available locally. I prefer the sandy buff colour. You are inspirational and very easy to watch, thank you for sharing, bfn.🐞🌻🌱
Ah, thank you Jane. Yes, I must buy some more grit; It does look good on top of the pots and you can immediately tell if something has been digging around. Hope you had a lovely weekend. Diane x
Very enjoyable video ❤ inspiring. I have some bulbs to plant along with garlic …hopefully this weekend
Hi Susie. So nice to hear from you and to see you in your garden. Sorry to hear about your hand. Hope it's getting better.😊
I ordered miniature daffodils for next spring and have been potting them in containers, very excited for next spring.
Me too Tina. I do love the miniature daffs. Hope you had a nice weekend. Diane x
I love that the ladder is interchangeable. I look forward to seeing the bulb show! This inspires me to get out and buy some different bulbs, those are so pretty! My squirrels eat crocus bulbs, but maybe if I grow them in my poly tunnel I’d have some luck. Bulb planting is fun,for sure. 🌸🌸🌸😀🌸🌸🌸
Hi there. I have covered my bulb pots with a very fine mesh to keep the squirrels out. We have one in particular that is so tame. Hope you had a lovely weekend. Diane x
Lovely to see Shirley again. It's great seeing how Shirley can continue to get her ideas for it sorted with your help and obviously see how she loves her garden. 😊
Hi Tracey. She does indeed and it does her so much good when she can get out, no matter what the weather is like. It really lifts her spirits. It lifts my spirits just being with her 😊.
Shirley's garden is looking great. I always used to cut the Crocosmia down this time of year then 2 years I was stopped in my tracks when I found a ladybird colony deep in the base of the leaves. Now I use a 2ft bamboo cane and natural twine to hold them semi upright till Spring when new shoots appear then I trim to the ground. I think, the blooms seem more abundant now. Thank you for sharing Shirley's garden. bfn. 🐞🌻🌱
Hi Jane. That's why I usually leave mine too. I too noticed that the ladybirds seem to like the leaves. 😀
Gardening is so much nicer when we do it with another person. You and Shirley make a good team. So envious that you can get on the grass as mine is saturated and so squelchy. Probably another Margo moment on its way! Lovely to see you both. xxx
Thank you Wendy. It's always lovely to hear from you. Hope you have had some dry weather so that your grass has had a chance to dry out for this weekend. It's always lovely spending time with Shirley. She's such an inspiration and being out in her garden does her so much good. Hope you have a lovely weekend. 😊
Cutting back makes a big difference and lovely to see Shirley in her garden.
It does. We had a lovely couple of hours together in the garden. She's such an inspiration. I'll be sure to pass on your message. 😊
Hi Diane, Enjoyed watching you pottering in your new greenhouse, whilst having my morning coffee, I must have missed this one last year. Thanks for sharing, bfn. 🐞🌻🌱
Hi Jane. Glad you enjoyed it 😊.
It’s always lovely to see Shirley and her beautiful garden. Amazing how much of a difference a little bit of cutting back makes. I’ve never had much luck with alstroemerias but Shirley’s dark leaved one has inspired me to have another go and see if I can find a similar one. x
Hi Jennifer. Yes, it's a beautiful one. I have found that Alstroemerias don't do much the first year you put them in. However, once they get their roots down they tend to clump up quickly. Hope you find one. Hers is called Arabian Nights. 😊
Shirley’s garden is so beautiful, I always enjoy visiting! This summer I think I accidentally removed some golden rod that had volunteered in my garden. Darn! Great teamwork, nice and tidy, now. Were your parents gardeners? I’m asking since you are both such accomplished gardeners yourselves. We have a new cat in the neighborhood, I’m hoping he gets along with my wild rabbits and doesn’t eat them. He’s a beautiful Bengal cat, when I first saw him, I thought I was seeing a leopard! 🍁🌿😀🍂💕
Thank you. I'll be sure to pass on your message. She'll be thrilled. Yes, my Mum loved flowers and my Dad grew roses. Shirley was just saying the other day how it was Dad who made her first window box for her when she got married back in 1965 and she sowed Marigold seeds in it. And so her love of gardening began and the rest is history as they say. The cat sounds beautiful. You'll have to try and capture some footage of him on your next video 😀.
Aww. I love that story about your Dad and the window box. 💗. The beautiful Bengal has come by twice more on his daily rounds, but I haven’t had my phone with me. I hope to capture my next encounter with him now that I’m keeping my phone in my pocket at all times. 🐾
@@PleasantPrickles I’m looking forward to seeing him 🙂
Great tidy up. Does Shirley leave her alstromeria in ground for winter. I bought one and it's in a pot and I wasn't sure if it would survive for the winter so I took it into conservatory. Hope it will be ok.
Hi there. Yes, she leaves them in the ground and they survive just fine. So yours should be fine in its pot, especially now that it is indoors. Depending on the size of the pot you have, you could split the plant in half next spring and then plant the halves out separately and they would bulk up by the end of the year. I'm sure you're going to love it. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment . It's much appreciated. Diane 😊
Thanks for your helpful reply Dianne 🌷
A Good Team job, well done girls👍
Thanks Mairead 😀
Great video. I do much the same as yourself. Last Autumn I did an experiment. After shredding the leaves, I mulched my beds with about 4-6" and kept them wet to prevent them from blowing away. Come Spring time, a good percentage of it had rotted down, resulting me having hardly any weeding to do this year. The only problem I found with this method was, the birds kept digging holes all over the garden for worms and scattering it onto my gravel (which was a small price to pay). I also mix plenty of leaves into my compost bin and give it a good mix.
Hi Stephen. It's lovely to hear from you. That's such a good idea and saves storing them. Love the fact that it suppresses the weeds! Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. Much appreciated. Diane 😀
I put my bagger attachment on my garden tractor. I used to dump my leaves in the woods to keep the weeds down, but I am making a huge pile this year and composting. I plan to knock the pile down and recollect them so they are cut smaller.
Hi Paul. Lovely to hear from you. I'm guessing that your garden is a lot bigger than mine 😁. That garden tractor sounds awesome! Love that you will have so much lovely leaf mould by next year. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Diane 😊
What about black oak and scrub oak left, how do you treat them? They have like an oil to them. But these are the kind of trees around my house. And acorns are a big problem. Please help
Hello Barbara. It's lovely to hear from you. According to gardening experts, you have the best leaves for making the richest leaf mould! So lucky you 😀. The oil is a problem in that, if you collect them whole, the oil causes the leaves to stick together and slows down the decomposition process. Shredding with a mower is the recommended method. I would suggest always doing this when the leaves are dry, otherwise it clogs your blades. It also means that it will take longer for you to clear all of your leaves away because you are reliant on weather conditions. I would actually recommend collecting your Oak leaves in your mower and then tipping them out on the lawn and going over them a second time to really break the leaves down. As for the acorns, I can only think to pick them up by hand. Would they break your mower blades? It sounds like you have your work cut out for you and I do hope you love gardening. But you know, what I always say is do the best you can with the time and equipment you have. And if that means just raking them up whole and popping them in your bags or fenced area then nature will take care of them; they will eventually break down and you will get your beautiful leaf mould. Your garden sounds amazing. Hope you're having a lovely weekend. Diane 😊
Wow, it’s amazing to see them spring back up in such a short time… I suspect with the soil Being frozen this stops the roots being able to soak up moisture. Then when the soil defrosts the plant is able to consume water again and fill up its cells again
Hi there. Yes, I think you're right. I'm always amazed at how such tiny, delicate little seedlings can survive winter temps. Nature is truly amazing. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. 😊
That leaf sucker doesn't work very well
Tell me about it 😀. You spend most of your time unblocking the thing. Much better with the lawn mower.
Love all the foliage no flowers
Hi Barbara. So pleased you liked it and thanks for taking the time to leave me feedback. Hope you're having a lovely weekend 😀
Seems a lot of work Diane, I have a adjustable rake and a couple of different brushes to clear leaves. I did try the leaf mould in old compost bags a couple of years ago, but it didn't seem to give the "black Gold" results I was hoping for. When I moved the bags, they had been acting as a overwintering snail colony. I do love your concept of sustainability in the garden. You are lethal with the shears in hand,✂ 🤣Thanks for sharing, bfn🐞🌻🌱
Hi Jane. I did look a bit scary now that I look back at it 😂. Hope you're having a lovely weekend.
Good to see that you're getting good use of your greenhouse and cold frames. Invaluable for this time of the year. I'll have to check on my plants tomorrow and tuck them in a more sheltered area. Thanks for filming and showing us Diane. x
They are indeed Wendy. There's something very satisfying about nurturing and protecting plants isn't there? Hopefully the weather will be good for you tomorrow and by tomorrow night you will have everything safely gathered in. Hope you have a good weekend. 😊
Thank You!!! I learned a lot from this video. I was raking leaves into a large plastic bag, squishing it down, and letting it sit for a year (occasionally squishing at random times). But, I never added water 🤦♀️ or poked holes in the bag. I will try your method. It's beautiful. 🙂
Hi Trish. It's lovely to hear from you and I really appreciate your feedback. So pleased I was able to help and I do hope that you come back and visit my channel and my garden again. Hope you have a lovely weekend. Diane 😊
LOVE what you taught me today. Thank you! BUT here in the states vacuuming your yard is a clear sign of meth use😂
Hi Bonnie. I'm so pleased you found the video useful and thanks for taking the time to leave me such lovely and highly amusing feedback. I love that! 🤣🤣 Hope you have a great weekend. Diane 😀
Great informative video! I pick up shredded leaves by the church, they make a lot. I push away the dirt/soil in the pallets and lay down the leaves, and put the dirt/soil back on. The leaves will now become mould/dirt while I grow on top of the pallet. I also mix with grassclippings, shredded paper or eggcartons. When the growingseason is over, I've made myself 2000 liter of new dirt to use. Talk about feeling happy😊 Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪
Hi Gina. What a fantastic idea and it does away with the need to find somewhere to store the leaves. Thank you so much for sharing your tip and for taking the time to leave feedback. I really appreciate that. Hope you have a lovely weekend and happy gardening 😀. Diane x
Great informative video Diane. I like your leaf blower/sucker. If I had more leaves I'd get one but all I get is fallen berries from a children's play area that backs onto my garden. I usually get my brother to fill a few sacks of his leaves as he has no shortage at this time of the year and as you said, it does make lovely mulch for our flower beds.
Hi Wendy. That sounds like a good arrangement 😀. I wish our local council would sell or give away the stockpiles of leaf mould they must accumulate. We never see where it goes or what they do with it. Hope you have a lovely weekend. Diane x
I put my leaves in a metal garbage can and take my weed wackier and shred them in that, leaf mold I swear is more precious to me than compost.😊
What a great idea Tina. Like you, I don't know what I would do without my stockpile. Hope you have a lovely weekend. Diane x
Top idea 👍
Brilliant video and perfect timing. I ve learnt so much from you. Thank you Diane I love your channel x
Ah, thank you Diane. That really means so much. Hope you have a lovely weekend. Diane x
So nice that you worry about the small creatures. That was gorgeous leaf mould from last year! How satisfying to make your own natural amendments. I collect whole leaves and it does take a long time to break down. I’m determined to find a way to shred them this year. I think it’s fun too! Great demo!🍁 🍁🍁🍁😃🍂🍂🍂
Thanks so much 😊. If you have a mower I would definitely recommend that method and certainly in your size garden. Thanks for the lovely feedback. Diane x
A woman after my own hart !! Thanks for a good vlog
You're welcome Mairead. 😊
Great advise as always. Love your channel. Thank you for sharing x
Thanks so much Diane 😊
All my tenders and succulent's are tucked away in the green house, I put them inside much earlier than normal. The wet weather was relentless and I did not want things rotting off. Great video Diane enjoying with my morning coffee. Thanks for sharing, bfn. 🐞🌻🌱
Glad you enjoyed it Jane. I'm heading round to Shirley's now, to dig up all of her Geraniums and bring them round to my greenhouse. It's a lovely sunny day here today, but it was a really cold and windy night last night. We're doing the right thing 😊.
How great that you have started so much already in the greenhouse! It’s a lot of work preparing for frost. Sounds like you have a proven plan. I’m sure your greenhouse and cold frames are wonderful to have now. It’s hot here during the day this week, so strange, but I’m watching the weather forecast closely! 🌿🌿🌿😀
Hi there. I'm off to my sister's house now, to collect in all of her Geraniums and bring them back to my greenhouse. We're having very cold and windy nights here. Looking forward to your next video 😊.
Lots of good advice Diane, thanks 😊
You're welcome Tracey. Looking forward to your next video 😊.
Thank you, for all your good advice, have a good week
You too. Mairead. Thanks for watching! 😀
Lovely to bump into you today Diane. Breagh got a little thrown hearing your voice on the video so soon after seeing you. This is a great recommendation for our next stay near Harrogate. It looks gorgeous. Thank you. Great editing and a really nice video. I’m sure you’ve given the RHS PR guys some ideas.
Oh thank you! I hope you have a lovely visit very soon. I can recommend the coffee and curd tarts from the cafe in the middle of the gardens. 😀
What a lovely garden Diane. Can't believe how much colour is still around for this time of the year. I'm sure that you and your sisters had a great time together. So nice that you all get together and enjoy visiting gardens. xxx
We had a lovely couple of days away Wendy and I think it did us all so much good. Especially Shirley I think, as she is totally dependent on others to take her anywhere. We stayed in a lovely hotel, ate far too much cake and bought far too many plants. It was wonderful😁. x
@@thedown-to-earthgardener Sounds like a perfect mini getaway Diane. Just my kind of thing. x
A lovely garden tour Diane. I visited Harlow Carr last summer and was blown away by it. Such a beautiful and well maintained garden full of ideas to take home. I hope you managed to fit in lunch at Betty’s, that was one of our highlights!! Have a good weekend xx
Hi Jennifer. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the tour. Yes, we had coffee and cake in the middle of the gardens and then we bought far too many plants on the way out. 😁
Lovely video, thank you.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it and hope you have a lovely weekend 😊x.
