Smithsdale Farm
Spain
We’re Danny and Kate. After years dreaming of living in the countryside together, growing our own food and raising our own animals, now we’re really making it happen! We’ve just bought 12 acres of land in the Spanish mountains where we’re converting an old stone barn into a tiny house and prepping the land to start a homestead. With no water, no electricity and no building experience, this ought to be fun....! Follow our journey as we take on the barn conversion by ourselves, learning the skills we need along the way, to start our mortgage free dream life in the mountains.
Farmhouse Kitchen Build & Winter Veg Garden | Spanish Homestead Progress
Our old country house renovation kicks up another notch, as we unlock a new skill; brick laying. We're starting to build the kitchen cabinets for our dream Catalan farmhouse kitchen and we're using terracotta bricks to build the structure. It feels good to finally be progressing to this stage of the old house renovation, as we start to see the DIY kitchen build take shape!
Up at the land, with Winter fast approaching, we plant some new veggies in the straw bale beds for our Winter vegetable garden. Planting peas, kale, cabbage and broccoli in Spain has its challenges where water is limited, so we're installing more irrigation too to set up a drought resistant vegetable garden.
Thank you for following our journey.

My wife and I LOVE following you. Your videos are best balanced that we have seen. You vary the content in short sections. Your use of text is so helpful and you explain what you are doing. My wife is going through Chemo and we enjoying watching your videos to switch off all our other stuff. God bless you and your family. Mark and Helen
Thank you for watching & glad you’re enjoying it. Sorry to hear what you’re going through, sending good luck for the treatment
We hope you guys are safe with the terrible storms we are having. You're in a badly affected area? Stay safe.
Hi, thanks for the message. Luckily we’re in a less effected area, lots of rain but not any damage or power loss 🙏 how about you guys? All ok?
@SmithsdaleFarm glad to hear it. Yes, all good here too. We had super strong winds but not much rain. Take care, apparently there is more on the way.
You guys are working very hard... building...and building, and more building. ❤❤. My small vegetable garden was a disaster. Didn't do well at all. Btw, hope your region is ok, not affected by the recent flash flood, rainstorms and hail.
Thank you 🙏 fortunately we’re are just north of the worst weather. Just heavy rain storms for us
@@SmithsdaleFarm Stay safe. Don't over work😁🥰
Hi there, we are Mark (Irish) and Helen (American) and we just found you. You are doing such a great job, even in the midst of set backs. Thank you for letting us join in your adventures
Many thanks for providing these videos. You are a very intelligent, hardworking, and lucky family. Well done, keep up the good work... ❤🎉
Thank you ☺️ glad you’re enjoying them
hello! you have to put on primer on the old floor before levelling the room. And during the drying-process you should cover the floor, when the temperature is to high outside. so you won´t get any cracks, because it can dry slowly.
Yes. Not using a primer was definitely the biggest mistake 🤦🏻♀️😫
long shot... any young people that want to do this in Andalusia together?
I worked with a cabinet maker and you are absolutely right, level everything as best as possible. Why? Slopes can create havoc, items moving off any sloping surface, liquids too. Level surfaces make the cabinets last much longer, they don't warp or twist as much. Your garden space should do well, you've been building the soil structure, adding mulches. It should be successful. Insects are mostly dormant.
Thank you. Ooooh must have been interesting working with a cabinet maker! Carpentry is fascinating!
Put an on/off valve at the “T”?
Yes! We hate plumbing!! lol! The bathroom looks beautiful, though!!
Thank you 💚
Yes! Amazing! Your guests will be honored at the hard work for them!
Guys just wondering is it possible to cover the aubergine plants with a large bucket to protect them at night can this help 😊
Ooh, not heard of doing that. Might give it a try. Thanks for sharing 💚
Hiya great job on the bathroom! Can I ask what you used on the walls & where you got it from? Would love to give it a try on our bathroom 😅
Hey! Thank you. We used a product from Leroy Merlin called “Masilla cubre azulejos en pasta” the brand is TOUPRET. In store they had 5kg and 7kg tubs but we also ended up ordering some 20kg tubs from the website too. They were more cost effective. If you do try it, we definitely found the shower squeegee was the best for smoothing it over after applying it. We saw the tip on another video and it was better than other metal tools for sure! Let us know if you try it 😁💚
From what you say about the Catalan farmhouse, you are in Catalonia, right? In which province?
Yes ☺️ we live in the south of Tarragona in the Baix Ebre region
Ok, I'm in Barcelona.😉
You are pretty good brick layer, nice work guys 😅😊
Thank you 😁💚
You guys are doing great, bravo
Thanks 💚☺️
Great vid on the kitchen build. Going to renovate my own kitchen next spring and was doubting between Spanish brickwork technique or just go prefab cabinets. I’m a woodworker and here in Spain everything is stone and brick so need to up my knowledge on brickwork - your video is perfect for that. Looking forward to the rest, the more details on how it works the better (I’ve tried finding videos on it but so far it’s quite limited and bad quality).
We really struggled to find much about building brickwork kitchens, too! We’ve tried to measure and plan the best we can, and above that just hope for the best 🤣 We found that prefab was going to be so expensive in comparison and liked the look of this style more anyway. Hopefully we can try and share as much of the build as possible for you so you can decide if you want to give it a go, too ☺️
@@SmithsdaleFarm really appreciate that! I’m sure all you’ll document will help. Enjoy the process!
Good job in the kitchen already!
Thanks 😁💚
Better something then nothing, in the garden! I mean produce!
What are your plans for that teeny weeny cabinet to the left?
A little pull out with all the spices. Next to the hob👨🍳 Although we have been told it’d make a perfect wine rack by some friends 😉😂
Nice😊
Thank you 💚
Wondering what the rules are regarding you building you own kitchen... Our town allows the kitchen itself to be build DIY, but all water/electrics needs to be signed off by accredited professionals to keep/get your habitation licence.
We have the permissions to renovate from the Ayuntamiento, based on us doing the work ourselves. But we’re not very confident with electrics or water so we’ll be getting some help with that anyway. We’re going to be putting in the conduit etc ourselves, but an electrician will run all the wiring.
@@SmithsdaleFarm So in this instance, its the same. Boggles the mind that each town can have slightly different rules. A friend of mine just a couple of kilometres away from me is basically allowed to do nothing himself...
Great videos guys 🙏🙏 i very much enjoy the content 🙌🏼 big fan here
Thanks man 🙏
Well done!
Thank you 😁
Wow, you have done amazing progress, also it is interesting watching the same time how you progress in your house as well in the fields with your fruits and vegetables. Cannot wait to see the next video, all the best :)
Thank you 💚😁
I grew lemon trees from pips of lemon. Dry them and put them into moist paper towel. Check after a few weeks and when spouting put them into pots
Interesting. Will they grow the same variety of fruit? Or might it just serve as root stock that would need to be grafted?
@@SmithsdaleFarm mine are a foot tall now and in bigger pots until next spring in uk
@@SmithsdaleFarm Lemons don't grow to type. So if you plant pips they grow citron unless EXTREMELY lucky.
👏👏👏
Love the worm! Good to see you getting into the garden too.
Thank you 🌱💚
Great job, not bad for a novice bricky ❤❤
Thank you! Pretty happy with how the first ones have gone for a first-timer 😁😁
This proves that old houses have their own character and personality - they do what they like! 🏠😅 Thank you for sharing your floor adventures, I'm catching up with your episodes and looking forward to watch the next one ❤
Oh definitely. What’s a house renovation without a bit of character?! 😆 Thank you for joining us for the ride. We hope you enjoy following along 💚
Hi, Been catching up on the videos, been a subscriber for a while just not had chance to keep up! I live and work down the coast from you in Benissa in the building trade. With the floor i have come across the terrazzo flooring many times, and the seal that put on is a pain🙄 I found that if you put a scuffing disc on a grinder and take the glaze and sheen off the tiles it gives a key for adhesive and self leveling compound something to stick too! As for keeping a lot of the dust out of your hair, I wear a motorcycle balaclava as it protects your whole head from the dust 😊 look like a bank robber but it works 😅 If you need any advice let me know and if I can help i most certainly will 👍
Great news about the rain! So glad you found the info on the original flooring method. And what a difference the primer makes 😮😮😮 Crossing fingers it works and you can move on to the next phase of the reno! Looking forward to next week's video!
Thank you! So far, so good 🤞🏻 It feels like such a big step forward on the project!
Thanks for sharing ❤great job checking in for the first time
Thank you 😁💚
Wow it’s amazing to see how much you can divert into the cisterna when it rains! So cool to see these old systems at work!
The old methods work so well…! When there’s actually some rain 🙄
Yes, it's a pity what is happening in some large areas of Spain, it is really dry. It is mostly because de continuous chemtrails on the sky, they are pushing clouds away! They want the Spanish (and European) countryside to stop producing crops. If they ruin farmers, they will make the population dependent on big food companies. They want us dependent, not free and sovereign... Still, they won't succeed, there are too many people organizing to fight these psychopaths who rule us. Thanks for your video!
OMG, that was a big job, but, its done right, thats the main thing!
Yeah.. pretty huge task in the end. But we finally feel like we’re getting somewhere with it 🤞🏻
Nice😊
Thank you 💚
Jajajaja 😅🤣
Looks good this time☺
🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hard work. Is there really nobody around you speaking of reinforcement meshes (fibre/mat) to put into the first layer of levelling. Then primer again and a second layer with more water to really level it out. Or to put some water again on that holes, filled with sand, before filling them up with cemex (and filling them up before the first layer) ... and so on? Hope it will work out this time for you ... without cracks. Good luck. Nice project.
What we’re discovering is there are many ways to skin a cat 🤣 And the more people you speak to, the more ideas they have. And the more confused you can end up. Haha. All the professionals disagree with each other and have their own way of doing things, too. When we found the traditional method, we decided to replicate that, since we don’t want to pull up everything and start from scratch, but rather fix the damage. Hope it was the right decision in the end.. For now it’s looking good. 🤞🏻
@@SmithsdaleFarm I am a professional. 😁 And my advice is relating on what you are doing. I for myself would have removed the screed under the Terracotta (screed and terracotta are one static system) completely because now you loosened it with the drill. It might wiggle an crack again. Then put a new screed with special cement or lime in 6-8 cm on it, then self levelling with reinforcement the complete floor. Fingers crossed
So glad you (a) had rain and (b) got the floor poured. Regards from Australia.
Thank you. Feels like a huge step forward 😁
Yeyyyy… a floor base…. Soon it’ll be ready for little feet to run on 🦶

Thank you for the comment. We did the research into the traditional method of Jack Arch floors, to understand their construction, and decided to follow that method to fix the damage. Maybe some builders would have done it the way you describe, but there are probably 100 ways to choose from to do any construction project. For us, it’s not necessarily about the fastest or cheapest way. We’re learning a lot and enjoying the process, even when things seem new or difficult.

The tiles are called 'encaustic tiles'. I've tried to rescue them a few times here in Greece and I think normally about 50% break on being lifted. You did well! They are very expensive to buy new. The originals can be even more expensive. These look like 1970s ones and maybe not so common as they went out of fashion around then. They would be amazing in a mid-century modern-style house but I'm not sure they will fit with your farm vibe. I might get shot for writing this but if you sold them for a good price they would still be saved but you could buy something more in your style. Also with the floor... It might be best to go right back to the beams and put floorboards in. Good luck that's all such hard work.
Ooh really interesting! We didn’t know that about the tiles, thanks for sharing!
