Cruise Missile
An old SMB tune that I always loved but never learned until now, when a client requested a lesson video on it. Praying the best for Steve's dear wife, Janine, who is fighting cancer! May she prevail!

I've been out of listening to country music since leaving Nashville, but a student wanted to learn this Derek Wells solo and I was happy to pick it up.

I've been so glad to be reunited with my dear drummer/vocalist compadre from the Steve Carl Band in the 80s, Bruce Gaetke and vocalist David Mau in the progressive rock band, Time Horizon. My involvement consists purely of session work on the recordings, but it may turn into some live action after our Coronation has subsided. Here's a snip of one of the tunes where I'm doubling the synth lines ...

Just felt like playing after a day of work and grabbed a jam track with a nice atmosphere and went at it, one take, gurfs and all.

For my dear friend, Ray LaBay on his birthday. I first met Ray when he was in high school, taking lessons at the music store where I worked. We reconnected via social media and I have enjoyed and have come to respect and admire him. His bride, Abbie, told me that Sleepwalk was one of his favorite guitar tunes, so I offer my take on Larry Carlton's arrangement of it and salute you, Ray!

Sweetwater Music, the nation's largest musical instrument retailer, has provided a group of backing tracks in a range of styles and started a Facebook page for players to post what they did with them. This one was in such a familiar groove, so I thought "What if Steve Morse and Steve Lukather played over this?" and had a go at it on my lunch break.

Hadn't played this one in years, so I felt like doing some playing on lunch and dusted it off, did 3 tries and picked this one. Not going for perfection, just having fun with this stellar composition. Takes me back to the days when this came out and we were doing northern California shows with the Dregs. Good times!

Sketching my way through an arrangement of what I think is Donald Fagen's harmonic Magnum Opus, which, given his catalog, is saying something. Not going for perfection, but trying to flow through it and get past the technicality.

It's an interesting and enlightening thing to chase your own tail and try to play things you played years ago. One of the best experiences I had in my Nashville years was writing/arranging/recording and performing with Joel Fry. Along with Brent Mason and Tom Bukovac, Joel is one of Ohio's best exports to Nashville. I met him in 2004 through Matt McClure, a multi-platinum selling, 3 time Grammy...
Swing Like That

Ty Enlgand was originally a member of Garth Brooks' band, but struck out on his own and had a few hits. This was from long gone days of yore when you could actually get a swing tune on country radio (1995). I worked extensively with steel guitarist, John Norris, who toured in Ty's band and spoke highly of the experience. I loved doing this song in Joel Fry's band in my Nashville years and he co...

In memoriam and honor of my brother in life and music, Michael kelly, who left us one year ago today. What a great friend and musician he was! I wrote this tune as a feature for his bass skills. Michael was blind yet could play bass with such force, grace, technique and tone. The middle breakdown section is the two-handed tapping part I'd written for him after hearing him play just about every ...
Mercury Blues Outro Solo

Another video lesson for a client, but when you get asked to do a Brent Mason solo, you're mixing business and pleasure. I'd done a video on Brent's first solo a few years back, but this request was specifically for the outro. Holler if I can do a lesson video for you!

This video produced in 2017 so you may never see this note but how were you able to find each note then so effortlessly play it? This had to take hours and hours of practicing! I've been working on this for years and can only scratch the surface. Well done my friend!!
Very kind, thank you! I listened to it a lot and then spent a lot of time dialing it on. Email me at twanghang@hotmail.com if you'd like to purchase a copy of the tablature.
This song is absolutely mesmerizing, I never tire of listening to this super smooth and blissful groove that this song possesses. Just a true gem of music by the Iconic Phoebe Snow.
I haven’t checked in for a while but I’m so glad I did Michael! It’s amazing to watch you play along note for note with such a complex song. Queen had such a unique style and very memorable licks. You did real justice in paying homage to this iconic song. I wish I had half of the skill on guitar that you have. You make me want to practice more! Thx buddy! Keep rocking! 🎸😎

nice. great shirt...
First heard this on a flexi-disc on a mag cover (Guitar Player?) and was astounded by the transcription (32nd notes?!) and thought it was a marvellous melody/tune/whatever. I remember going out and buying the album later that week. Awesome. I still have the flexi disc too.
Remarkable.
Who do you think played that iconic intro? Neil or Stephen? Honestly it could have been either but I’m thinking Neil!
@@Irlose1 I lean toward Stephen based on Neil’s tone in the fills later in the song that are more obviously Neil
Michael, nice and accurately done! I love this album, and always thought it has 2 of the finest acoustic guitar solos I've ever heard... along with the one from Gardens of Babylon. The fast runs with every single note being clearly heard has always fascinated me, as well as the creative way the notes are rythmically dispersed... By the way, I noticed you do play with the back side of the pick? Would that be for a more warm sound or to lessen the resistance when picking fast between strings? I use the same model as you, inspired by Eric Johnson... thanks and keep it up!
