- I often get requests for tutorials on the song videos I post, but none of them have generated as many requests in recent memory as Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen", so I decided to do a quickly/flyover of the core elements of this great song. Hope it helps - enjoy!
I'm a 73 year old in lock-down - been playing since I was 10!
I can now play it!! Superb lesson Michael - thank you so much
Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience! Music is so powerful and such good medicine, especially in these days. 😊
Like so many others here, I'm impressed with your abilities and your teaching. You could have been on Steely Dan's list of studio musicians!
That's some tall cotton you put me in, sir, thank you kindly!
Thanks so much - so concise and covering all the tasty licks - beautifully communicated Michael!
So glad it was helpful 😊
Thanks for this. This is the only one you need, for anyone trying to learn this.
Wow..👏...thnx...👍...really helped...sooo well done 💪......kick started my own improvement..🎸
I know it’s been 2 years since you made this wonderful tutorial for this Steely Dan tune.I am honestly trying to learn this song on guitar and I am struggling a lot. This by far is the best instructional tutorial on this song on UA-cam it explains everything slowly and step by step.Keep up the good work sir!
Teachers such as yourself are a rarity. 🙏🏼
Thank you for your kindness!
This is fantastic. Thanks so much! I’m 21 and my friends love Steely Dan, can’t wait to learn this and play for them. All because of you thanks so much Michael!
This is the best lesson hands down.thumbs up lesson
that makes my day! Thank you!
Thank you.Excellent pace.
My pleasure. So glad it was helpful
I read somewhere that Mark Knopfler played that intro solo, and that was the only thing they kept from him. Good video.
Thank you for unravelling this wonderful song and sharing it with everybody. Your pup is in the pocket!
She sure is
Wonderful personal teaching style aided by great accuracy and authentic tone. I thought I could play this song until I
found your video. Thank you so much.
Very kind, thank you! So glad it was helpful.
Very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to do this Michael!
My pleasure
Thanks so much!!! great job of laying this out !! such classic tasty guitar parts that I am actually playing now 👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏
Thanks! That makes my day that it's helping people to enjoy this great song!
Blown away by this lesson.
Man…I need to go back to music school.
So glad it was helpful! It’s such a great tune!
I have not picked up my guitar to try this but I know it's perfect just by listening. Hats off to you Michael Gregory!
OMG !!! You made me very happy , soon 68 yo , but I've loved Steely Dan since the 80ies , but always just listen because it was unreachable for me , but now I can see clearly how's done , and as a cream dropp on the cake he / you uses those chords and harmonies I have used the whole time !!! Isn't It funny ? But thank you so very much and when I am done with this I hope you have more Steely Dan in the store , and In that case you just say how much U want 😅😘👍
Tak, Simon!
Thank you so much. Just learned this song super quick with all the nuances and everything. I like how you did an overview of the song with the tonal centers. And most of all thank you for using note names and chords, instead of just saying fret numbers and tab. It makes it so much easier to understand when you are using note names and chords :) Great lesson.
Very kind of you, Matt, thank you!
Great lesson, duh.
But I just wanted to say I love the sound of your voice. Helps me be calm and pay attention which is the lame part of learning, cause I have the drive anyways.
You made this so much easier.
Very kind of you, thank you.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart in moments like these! Your an amazing teacher
Such expressions as yours are a big part of what keeps me doing it. Thank you, Richard! Stay safe!
Thank you Michael. I had some gaps of understanding that you have now completely filled-in. That song is a groove machine at the end, which has given me hours of joy to improvise behind.
Thanks for your kind words. Such a great song!
Spot on structural map of this song, thanks heaps
Thanks for your kindness. Glad it was helpful
Amazing ... thanks. You’re an incredible musician. Steely Dan was unbelievably good
Yes they were. Thank you for your kind words, Fred!
I really enjoyed this lesson. Some mighty tasty chords. I like the way you break it down so it's not overwhelming.
Thanks so much, Kevin! Breaking it into chewable bites really helps me
Super cool! Thanks. I'm learning it on acoustic which is a bit harder but it's shaping up gradually.
Doin’ the hard work! Good on ya! Glad the video was helpful
Stick with it, some good lines in there also like the Keith Richards quip. This is an awesome detailed look at this beauty of a composition. Thanks!
Thank you Sir for this! I love how you not only present this but explain as well!
Thank you! So glad it was helpful
nineteen year old here; I am a fan of the Dan and Gaucho is such an underrated album - thank you Michael, this lesson was great!
Justin! That is medicine for my heart to learn of a young player diggin’ the Dan! My pleasure!
Great video. Loved the pace of it. Explaining enough for any intermediate to keep up and not getting bogged down with the usual ‘first finger 9th fret, second finger…zzzz’ crap.
Thank you !!
I appreciate your kindness
Just found this.. a great insight.. nicely explained.. great job - thank you... Hugh had such a great feel.. pretty good yourself👍 👍👍
Thank you kindly, Robert
Off the wall fantastic lesson! I was absolutely glued to this, especially the explanation of the chord inversions - those are great - what a gifted ear you have. When you got up to the "Long Train Running" hammer I was like - I'm finally going to learn how a pro musically describes this .. Alas.. the 'Long Train Runnin' "thing" .. ha ha ... that's what I call it. The Keith Richards "thing" // (although in G tuning) .. You are the best ... Please keep them coming whenever you get a chance. Thank you for taking time out to do this for us! This was a real treat. :-)
Thanks for such positive feedback!
What a treat, thanks Michael!
My pleasure sir.
I just learned the electric piano part which really kicked my butt! Now for the guitar part! My gosh, why do I put myself through this? Hardest song I have ever tried to learn.
Because the payoff is SO good! :-)
This is a remarkable lesson. Great song, and you make it look so smooth and 'easy'. Really appreciate you going over the chord names and some of the theory as you play. I know a lot of the chords, but not all.
Thank you for your kind words of appreciation! I'm glad it was helpful.
Absolutely brilliant!
Very kind, thank you!
thanks a lot mate ! from Australia
carl lynch Good on yer!
in Covid lockdown... will spend the evening learning this one.... so glad I found this, thank you ...have just subscribed !
Thank you! I'm trying to shed on some stuff in this time as well
You really have Hugh McCracken's style down well!
Wow! Thank you so much for this vid. You’re a great teacher and player. You remind me of my uncle tony who knows every Beatles song and gives me the same kind of rundown every time. Bless you
My pleasure, Jason, thank you
great job, Michael! Not only a guitar pro but excellent teacher! Thank you very much!!!
Very kind, thank you.
Very helpful and clear thanks!
Great lesson Michael. Two suggestions: make sure your entire face is in the camera at all times or move it out of the shot and closer to the fretboard (your head is half cut off) AND put the puppy in another room. I just got a new puppy and she loves ruining the shot!! Lol. Waiting for a fresh video from you. Thanks!
Sage advice, thanks!
Wow, incredible, thank you so much, Cheers!!
My pleasure
great song that i loved but never understood. Thank you for clarifying it a little more for me.
So glad it was helpful. Music is medicine!
Just brilliant!
Suuri kiitos Vesa!
Well Done! Thanks for sharing and saving me hours trying to figure it out on my own!

My pleasure. Glad it was helpful.
Great breakdown of a great song. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful
I had to give this a thumbs-up for the Keith Richards remark! (The lesson is great, too!)
That’s hilarious, Keith Richards career, you’re the best teacher!
;-{D
awesome and the shirt is killing it !
That's my Hawaiian wife. I come by it honestly. 😊
Great lesson on a great song. Thank you sir, and all the best to you and yours.
Thank you, sir! Blessings back at ya!

I'll add my thanks.... helpful to understand and pick up some fills
Thank you kindly, Tim

awesome job Mike
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Good one Michael! Saludos!
Muchisima gracias!
That was a really good lesson, Michael! What part of the world do you live in? Take care and I look forward to seeing more of your excellent skills.
@@thomasmarengi2951 Thank you for your kind words. After 20 years in Nashville, I’m back in my hometown of Sacramento
Fantastic lesson. Would love it if you can share some insights on holdsworth like legato technique
If time permits. I'd be glad to, but there are probably many videos available online that cover that.
@@michaelgregory2231 Yeah but none of them cover the proper muting technique. Marshall Harrison s advice is great, but it doesn't go into the depth of muting hammer ons only legato. I'm not sure about your approach but your legato sounds so smooth. Thanks so much for all the uploads over the years!!
I understand. Hopefully I'll have time for that soon. Thank you again for your interest.
Ever thought about doing a lesson for Rose Darling , another great that doesn’t get the attention it deserves IMHO , thanks
Great tune, for sure. Between a full time job in healthcare IT and playing in 8 live projects, I don’t currently have the bandwidth to add content as I’d like to
Very nice dude.
Thank you!
Dude. This is so freaking complicated. OMG but it so cool.....
The genius of Becker and Fagen
Really nice job Helped me pick up some tasty licks I missed. Also love your soft teaching style. I have a take on Room 335 you might like.
Thanks for your kind words, Mitch. I did check out your channel. Excellent work!
@@michaelgregory2231 Thanks! Just getting back into some posting, hoping to do more soon. Look forward to yours as well.
@@MitchMeyersonMusic Excellent! Were you in Scottsdale in the 90s?
@@michaelgregory2231 No I moved to Scottsdale in 2004
@@MitchMeyersonMusic OK. I was there in 1996 when I toured with Motown/Mojazz artist, Wayman Tisdale, who was a power forward with the Suns at the time and lived in Paradise Valley
Sir, how can one not enjoy this if they happen to be a guitar player or Steely Dan fan? Seriously, there is enjoyment by watching and listening you replicate the guitar foundation of the track and there is the learning angle which is profound as well. There is so much to extract from Dan music again if they are into guitar....and you have plumbed this tune very well. I could listen or watch you do this all day....if you have any other free or fee based songs of this vintage, point me in the direction of their on-line location....and thanks much for this. A late 60's vintage guy chronologically who lives musically in the 60s and later....classic era. What is the best brand name solid body electric guitar that permits even novices to fake their way thru a track like this? I'm thinking a USA build Fender Telecaster or Strat....your thoughts?
Thank you for your kind words. A strat is what was played on the record, but a Tele would be the next closest thing. Re: other videos, email me: twanghang@hotmail.com
The other aspect of a good guitar tutorial or song deconstruction piece incorporates some of the history and lore...and I was even more informed to learn that Hugh McCracken was the session guy who contributed the Hey 19 structure or solos. Wikipedia credits him with the solo. For audiophiles or guitar hobbyists, that musical history is what ties things together many years later for those of us still around. Learning that McCartney played a lot more lead guitar than I realized on the Beatles recordings was an eye opener...the Steely Dan story with their reputation for perfection and or subjective satisfaction on session musician work is fodder for the ages. At any rate, I have been told that Mr. McCracken may have contributed lead guitar parts for Paul McCartney on Ram album....and looking at his discography on Wiki is an eye opening experience....he was as prolific a session guy as Glen Campbell, Louie Shelton, Dean Parks, Jay Graydon and those kind of fellows. Again, MG, thank you for sharing. Will touch base via the other channel.
@@dennylibertario2246 It's true. Hugh is all over RAM, one of my fave albums of all time, If you scour the videos on my channel,. I tried to do at least one Steely Dan song for each of the brilliant guitarists they featured.
9:00 - i was singing 'still feel like your man'(by john mayer of course) :D
Well done, Michael!!
Thanks, Allen!
Kindergarten simple ha ha ha... Thx for the lesson!!
Thanks MG, always inspirational for us hackers, and cool doobie bros. lesson w/in a lesson. Better let that dog out, it might really need to go, haha'
Lol! She just can't stand to be on either side of a closed door. The grass is always greener... Glad you enjoyed the vid!
Guitar players couldn't teach the masses like this until the internet arrived.
Almost a lost art likes of Cardi b and Kanye west two chord songs..
Hi Michael - every thought of doing Domenic Troiano Lonely Girl?
Good call. I loved Dom's playing.
Niiiice! ;-)
Grazie
"Nice"
Thank you!
Thank you very much!! This video helps me a lot. But can you please explain the solo part of the beginning of the song? Like you did in the video 2 years ago. 😊🙏🏼
It's just the chorus chord progression on the intro, in F# minor, transitioning to D major for the 1st verse.
Michael Gregory thank you 🙏🏼❤️
That was an amazing and accurate lesson. Thanks so much. How do you hear all that?
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful. Some players are great improvisers, while other are great stylists and other are great feel players. God/The Universe gave me great ears. When I started playing at age 9 I could learn basic riffs by ear almost off the bat. It's just a gift.
@@michaelgregory2231 Is there any chance that you could help me figure out a song? It is "her eyes are a blue million miles" by Capt. Beefheart. The intro riff seems to be out of the C# minor pentatonic scale, and there are some chromatic sequences, but I can't seem to get it. Very frustrating.
B minor pent rather
@@billzziv6859 B minor pentatonic is correct. Email me: twanghang@hotmail.com
What came first, music or theory?
Music, of course
I was looking for my dog...LOL
:-{D
Way too advanced for me..such unique music.. tone is spot on.. you make it look easy..very complex pattern changes, chords.. beautiful break down..hard to tell what fingers are down holding something and when they are up floating..Thanks..very enjoyable watch!
James Hill Thanks so much! They write deceptively complex stuff. It grooves so light and easy that you don’t realize there’s so much going on. 🙂
so simple...right?!
Seemingly
cant help it i love dogs and was uneasy because neglecting the dog sorry i quit
Turn down the sensitivity knob, bro. My wife was with the dog. If I get a call from the SPCA I'll who know called 'em.
All dogs hate minors and flats
Lol
audio 2 low kid
you need to speak p or turn mic up
God Bless u sir
Thank you!
I’ll bet you can’t play Sweet Home Alabama.😉
🤣 I’ve got a story about that. When I was touring with Shane McAnally, we did 2 weeks with Lynyrd Skynyrd. By the 4th or 5th show, I’d been at catering with Gary Rossington a few times and we got friendly. I said to him “I’ve probably played Sweet Home Alabama in all my cover gigs more times than you have and I’ll never make a fraction of your money”. He just looked at me and said “Sorry’bout ya”. 🤣
beautifully done. get a better camera tho 🙂
Your tone sounds great. What kind of amp and effects are you using?
Thanks for your kind words. I was plugged in to my recording computer and using the Fender Deluxe sim in Amplitube 5 with compression and reverb
@@michaelgregory2231 Cool that sounds awesome!!
I love this song because the guitar chords stand out so gloriously!!
Proper breakdown of sections to get the meat and potatoes of a lovely tune kudos to you dude
Thanks, M8!
Great lesson , love the sixths details, the rhythm guitar makes this song !
Thank you. Yes, Hugh's unique, sparse and tasteful approach really make it
