Off the wall fantastic lesson! I was absolutely glued to this, especially the explanation of the chord inversions - those are great - what a gifted ear you have. When you got up to the "Long Train Running" hammer I was like - I'm finally going to learn how a pro musically describes this .. Alas.. the 'Long Train Runnin' "thing" .. ha ha ... that's what I call it. The Keith Richards "thing" // (although in G tuning) .. You are the best ... Please keep them coming whenever you get a chance. Thank you for taking time out to do this for us! This was a real treat. :-)
I know it’s been 2 years since you made this wonderful tutorial for this Steely Dan tune.I am honestly trying to learn this song on guitar and I am struggling a lot. This by far is the best instructional tutorial on this song on UA-cam it explains everything slowly and step by step.Keep up the good work sir!
Wonderful personal teaching style aided by great accuracy and authentic tone. I thought I could play this song until I found your video. Thank you so much.
This is fantastic. Thanks so much! I’m 21 and my friends love Steely Dan, can’t wait to learn this and play for them. All because of you thanks so much Michael!
Just getting into Steely Dan which is a wonderful experience and this is so well timed. Your cut down version of a lesson suits me so well. It's quick and to the point with all the required information and of course the important musical context information. It's good to hear a master keeping proper musical form alive in this age of none musical music. Thank you Michael.
Thank you Michael. I had some gaps of understanding that you have now completely filled-in. That song is a groove machine at the end, which has given me hours of joy to improvise behind.
Great video. Loved the pace of it. Explaining enough for any intermediate to keep up and not getting bogged down with the usual ‘first finger 9th fret, second finger…zzzz’ crap. Thank you !!
Thank you so much. Just learned this song super quick with all the nuances and everything. I like how you did an overview of the song with the tonal centers. And most of all thank you for using note names and chords, instead of just saying fret numbers and tab. It makes it so much easier to understand when you are using note names and chords :) Great lesson.
This is a remarkable lesson. Great song, and you make it look so smooth and 'easy'. Really appreciate you going over the chord names and some of the theory as you play. I know a lot of the chords, but not all.
Great lesson, duh. But I just wanted to say I love the sound of your voice. Helps me be calm and pay attention which is the lame part of learning, cause I have the drive anyways. You made this so much easier.
@@michaelgregory2231 Yeah but none of them cover the proper muting technique. Marshall Harrison s advice is great, but it doesn't go into the depth of muting hammer ons only legato. Great lesson Michael. I just got a new puppy and she loves ruining the shot!! Lol. Waiting for a fresh video from you. Thanks!
OMG !!! You made me very happy , soon 68 yo , but I've loved Steely Dan since the 80ies , but always just listen because it was unreachable for me , but now I can see clearly how's done , and as a cream dropp on the cake he / you uses those chords and harmonies I have used the whole time !!! Isn't It funny ? But thank you so very much and when I am done with this I hope you have more Steely Dan in the store , and In that case you just say how much U want 😅😘👍

Sir, how can one not enjoy this if they happen to be a guitar player or Steely Dan fan? Seriously, there is enjoyment by watching and listening you replicate the guitar foundation of the track and there is the learning angle which is profound as well. There is so much to extract from Dan music again if they are into guitar....and you have plumbed this tune very well. I could listen or watch you do this all day....if you have any other free or fee based songs of this vintage, point me in the direction of their on-line location....and thanks much for this. A late 60's vintage guy chronologically who lives musically in the 60s and later....classic era. What is the best brand name solid body electric guitar that permits even novices to fake their way thru a track like this? I'm thinking a USA build Fender Telecaster or Strat....your thoughts?
Thank you for your kind words. A strat is what was played on the record, but a Tele would be the next closest thing. Re: other videos, email me: twanghang@hotmail.com
The other aspect of a good guitar tutorial or song deconstruction piece incorporates some of the history and lore...and I was even more informed to learn that Hugh McCracken was the session guy who contributed the Hey 19 structure or solos. Wikipedia credits him with the solo. For audiophiles or guitar hobbyists, that musical history is what ties things together many years later for those of us still around. Learning that McCartney played a lot more lead guitar than I realized on the Beatles recordings was an eye opener...the Steely Dan story with their reputation for perfection and or subjective satisfaction on session musician work is fodder for the ages. At any rate, I have been told that Mr. McCracken may have contributed lead guitar parts for Paul McCartney on Ram album....and looking at his discography on Wiki is an eye opening experience....he was as prolific a session guy as Glen Campbell, Louie Shelton, Dean Parks, Jay Graydon and those kind of fellows. Again, MG, thank you for sharing. Will touch base via the other channel.
