Hey Rick, It’s funny how 1980 marked the end of your days as a child collector, while it was my gateway into the world of baseball cards. I remember opening so many of those packs and storing the cards in either a cigar box or an old shoe box. I couldn’t get enough of Pirates and Yankees cards! There’s something about the simple yet colorful design that really lets the photographs shine. I’m with you on the mix of portrait and action shots-it would be great if Topps still did that today. It makes flipping through binder pages much more interesting, with each card telling its own story. What are your three favorite cards in the set? For me, it’s Dave Parker, Reggie Jackson, and Gary Carter. The Tim Foli card might not be the first one that comes to mind for most people, but I’ve always liked it. I still remember pulling it from a pack-it’s a great action shot, and you’ve got the pillbox cap with all those Stargell stars on it. The George Scott card was another standout, with a nice portrait shot. Rickey had such an incredible career. I was in Kindergarten when he retired, and then, I was married with my wife expecting our first child when he hung it up. Time sure flies! By the way, I love the added touch of the lunchbox and books displayed alongside the binder.
It's always interesting to hear what each collector considers the last "vintage" set. It's funny, I always have considered 1973 to be the last year. And that was my last year collecting as a kid, just like you with 1980. Those '80s look great in the binder. I'm discovering I'm liking the look of the various sets of the mid-70s - the late 80s in the binders.
1980 Topps...the year it all started for me
Life wise or collecting wise? :)
@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector collecting
Fun stuff, Rick. Have a great new year.
Thanks Dave, you too!
Happy New Year, Rick. Really enjoyed seeing your cards and hearing your family Christmas stories. A belated Happy 90th Birthday to your mom. Looking forward to seeing your collection grow in 2025. All the best to you this year.
Hey Rick! I loved hearing you talk about the 1980 set! I also bought this as a complete set, probably around 1988! Three other memories you touched on. You mentioned "Big " Ed Halicki. Among myself and my friends at the time (back in the early 70s) he was known as "Ugly" Ed Halicki (my apologies to Mrs. Halicki) and I immediately could hear my College roommate calling his name! Second, Rusty Staub was always known as "Le Grande Orange" which is what the broadcasters on the French language radio called him! The name traveled with us as he made his circuit of a number of other teams around MLB. Finally, the Candyman's No-No is one of two no-hitters I have personally watched (this one on TV) from start to finish! The other was Andy Hawkins versus the Chicago White Sox which he lost in eight innings. He would later lose the no-hitter again when MLB changed the rules on 8 inning no-hitters qualifying as an official no-hitter. I also watched on TV Jim Bibby's 28-batter 1-hitter (I am thinking it was also against the Dodgers, but that may be untrue). He lost the Perfect Game when the very first batter singled to start the game! He then retired the next 27 consecutive hitters! Great memories! All of things you mentioned about the reason for the end of your youthful collecting experience were also true for me, except I eventually married the Girl!
I need to start doing videos like this with my team set binders. enjoyed hearing you go through the 80 set.
Do it! It's fun to show off the binders now and then.
Fun video, Rick! Nice set!
Thanks Scott!
I too was 15 and you're bang on...girls cars and was into the music scene too Rick...seems we had similar stories in our journey...hope you had a great holiday season Rick...cheers
Thanks for watching, Mike! It was funny looking back because it made me realize Phase II of me started with music, girls and cars.
1980 is a great set. Thank you for sharing. Saw your hat. I am going to Long Beach for business. Any food or card suggestions while I am there? Thanks Rick
What kinda food do you enjoy? Cards stores close by I would recommend South Bay Cards in Lomita, CA. Another good store is Baseball Cards Plus in Huntington Beach. if you feel like going into LA, you should go to the Burbank Card Store. Let me know if you need more info.
Great set! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Happy new year Rick. Great set and fun Hendersons to see. I agree with you about the Westminster show today. Mostly Pokémon and I also saw the mays and mantle. Talked to the dealers and they just brought it to show off and bring in eyes. Probably gonna hold off until the Burbank show next month.
Man, that Westminster show is hit or miss, Edison. I only go cause it's a short drive from my house. I am not doing anything until Burbank either. I'll be there on Friday for sure.
Happy new year to you and your family 😊
Thank you, Bob!
Mike Scott was a pretty good pitcher. Wasn't he on a 1980 rookie card?
Mike, you're right. Mike Scott was next to Jesse Orozco. The guy had some very good years with the Astros.
Wow, the last vintage set. Hard to believe that collecting the 1980 set today would be like collecting the 1930's sets in the early 1970's. Are we that old? LOL
Mike, it's crazy to think 1980 was 43 years ago!!! It is like us taking about the 30s. Well I see you in Ontario?
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Hey Rick, looks like tickets just went on sale today! Planning on attending on the 14th.
It's so cool that you bought your first 1980 set from a vending case. Those days are long gone. I'll bet those guys made money selling it at $10 a set. In 1985, I bought a complete set that a buddy had put together from a vending case for $16. That was a good buy. Anyway, by 1980 the possibilities of photography were really improving. Topps stayed well of ahead of Fleer and Donruss for a few years in that department.
Michael, 1980 is the one and only time I bought a set from a vending case. Can you imagines being 12,000 cards and putting sets together? LOL!
Good stuff, thanks for sharing
Thanks Orlando!
Well done my friend
Thank you, my friend!
You had a great year Rick!
Thanks Jake! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
Rick- really love your channel. I really like the Crosetti pickup from May. I am a huge fan of the 34-36 Diamond Stars set. Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
thanks so much, for your kind words, Joe. I just subbed your channel. Diamond Stars are beautiful! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!
Amazing recap. Some great cards there. The Allie Reynolds looks nice. Probably my favorite of your acquisitions. Have a great holiday.
Thanks so much! Almost done with that 50 Bowman set, but it'll take several months still. Happy Holidays to you!
@ thank you. I’m working on the ‘50 Bowman football set.
@@The_Cincinnati_Kid I'm about half way done with the Rams team set from that year. It's a beautiful set like the baseball set.
@ yeah it is. I just got the Waterfield card for Christmas.
Great set accomplishments. I too prefer to store my binders on the flat. Less potential for damage that way. Although I no longer do modern sets, there is something with the 2024 that appeals with me.
Daniel, totally agree, I like them flat. Plus since I use the team card and it's horizontal a card so helps with my OCD <wink>. Thanks so much for watching. Happy New Year!
What was the reasoning Ernie Lombardi wasn’t in ‘41 play ball? Or any of the play ball sets. I’ve often wondered that as a Reds fan
It was several reasons. One being back then, they didn't always include all the players. Every set has missing players. There are no Cubs cards in any Play Ball set (except 1940 retired players) cause Wrigley owned the Cubs and wouldn't let his players on display by a competing gum company. I also heard there was supposed to be a second series starting in late 41/early 42 but the war started and any idea of cards at that point was mute. I have about 20 names of great players that weren't included. You can do the same for sure in Diamond Stars, Bowman, Topps. It's just sad they couldn't get all these players in one set. Thanks for watching!
Very cool video Rick. I did not know about Lamb’s story. Do you think the Dodgers retire Dusty’s #12 if he makes the HOF as a Mgr. Also…I used to love watching Reggie Smith play in the late 70’s and always felt he was the Dodgers best hitter. Reggie had a great career starting with a phenomenal rookie year on that 1967 Impossible Dream team. Reggie is also a longtime Dodgers hitting coach and dedicated humanitarian. I feel he’s should garner more attention from the MLB HOF committee but at the very least the Dodgers should consider retiring #9. Am I on this walk alone?
Hey Rick…Happy Holidays to you and your family. I’ve really enjoyed watching your channel this year and communicating with you. You truly have an amazing collection! 😎 Like you I was born in Encino 1965 bleeding Dodgers Blue from the start. The day my Mom brought me home from the hospital Sandy Koufax pitched a perfect game in a make up game against the Cubs in front of only 12,000 fans at Dodger Stadium as Watts burned in the distance. Here’s to a less volatile and peaceful 2025 and a repeat Dodgers WS Championship. 💪🏽🙏
Todd, amazing Sandy Koufax story to share there. Like you, I was born in 65, it's funny that I never count the 1965 World Series Championship as one that happened while I was alive, but I acknowledge the 1981 championship s my first. I hope 2025 is a good year for all of us. Thank you for your friendship and our love of cards. Happy New Year!
Hey Rick! Happy 90th to your mom! You really had great year picking up some great cards and completing 3 sets. Not to mention the Dodgers WS win. Have a Merry Christmas!
Thanks for the well wishes to my Mom, Gannon. She had a great time at her birthday dinner. Why am I the only person that feels like finishing 3 sets isn't much? LOL! Dodgers winning the series was definitely my best Christmas gift! thanks so much for watching and commenting, I hope you had a nice Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thanks for the look back on the year in your collecting journey, but especially on the christmas memories of your family. You helped put me in a good mood for a great christmas. See you in 2025.
Mitch! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! See you soon!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MOM! What a milestone! You had a wonderful year. You picked up and finished some very cool things! Can't wait to see what you have all in store for 2025! Merry Christmas!
MIKE! Mom's party was a rousing success! She was so happy! 2024 was a good year. I hope 2025 will be too. Merry Christmas, my friend!
This set is shrouded in darkness. IT'S ONE OF THE VERY BEST!
Happy 90th Birthday to your mom! That’s great! Sounds like you had a great year in the hobby! Loved the cards you showed especially the Goudey Ernie Lombardi and the 49 Bowman Enos Slaughter! Love both of those sets! Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Jim! 2024 was a good year. I hope 2025 will be too for all of us! I love that Ernie Lombardi card too. Those Goudey cards are best. A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!
Hi Rick, First off, Happy 90th Birthday to your mom! What a special milestone, and I’m sure going out to celebrate with her will be such a memorable evening. Enjoy every moment! Thank you for mentioning my video and for sharing the story of your first Christmas gift. The photo of you with your stuffed bear at the end was a nice touch. It’s incredible to think about the history you shared with that bear. While it’s a shame you no longer have it, the memories and that wonderful picture will always hold a special place. I also loved hearing about how the Acosta family celebrated Christmas. I am glad your mom recovered from being sick in 1969 and is still here to make new memories with you. This season really is about cherishing memories, isn’t it? That’s one of the reasons collecting cards resonates so deeply with me-it ties into those feelings of nostalgia and connection that make the hobby so meaningful. You’ve had an incredible year in collecting! I really enjoyed the recap of your pickups. It also reminded me how much I want to add the 48-49 Leaf Joe Gordon to my collection-I don’t have any of his cards yet, and there aren’t many to choose from. I also loved how you finished the card portion of your video by showcasing the Alou, Cox, and Reynolds cards. They’re a perfect reflection of the projects you will be working and possibly finishing in 2025. You’ve accomplished so much this year, from adding that vintage Carruthers card from the Goodwin Champions set, to reclaiming all the cards from your childhood collection, and finishing off your 41 Playball, 63 Topps, and 68 Topps sets. What an amazing year! Merry Christmas to you, my friend. Here’s to an exciting 2025! Take care, Terry
Thanks Terry! Mom's birthday party was very nice and Mom was very happy. 90 Years, just amazing to think about it. When I saw your video, I knew I had to discuss the bear story as I do think about it often around this time of year. Christmas is definitely a time of reminiscing. Like you, I think I enjoy my 70's cards cause it just reminds me of so many events from that era. Now with my older vintage cards, I think about the child that bought or owned this card and somehow ended up in my collection. I can't explain why, but for some reason I am a a big Joe Gordon fan and when I saw that card, I knew I wanted it my collection. I am very lucky to have my collection and I love sharing it with all of you. 2025 should be another fun collecting year. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Terry!
Merry Christmas Rick, thank you for great shows. Had to look up Bob Caruthers on Wikipedia. Wow, impressive career! There are a number of pitchers in the HOF with less impressive stats.
I agree on the Caruthers HOF statement. When I started researching him and knowing he played for Brooklyn, I knew I had to buy the card. Merry Christmas and thank you for always watching!
Cheers to you and your family. Thanks for sharing some personal stories. 🎉❤ merry Christmas and happy new year 2025 dodgers two peat lol
Thank you, Edison! Let's run it back, my friend! I'll see you in Ontario! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
RIP RICKY HENDERSON
RIP Indeed. A great player. The plan is to discuss him in my next video. Thanks for watching!
Addendum: The 1949 Bowman set is a landmark because it introduced America to the nickel wax pack. (I don't think anyone counts the scarce 1948 test issue that was unearthed in the 2010s. In '49, Bowman came right out the gate with both nickel and penny packs.)
49's are nice cards!
What a year Rick. Congrats! Completing three vintage sets in one year is a big deal. And happy birthday to your mom and have a great Christmas and new year
Hey Mark! Thanks so much for the well wishes. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you!
Great yearly recap , Rick. I love the Lombardi and Vander Meer cards.
That Lombardi card is very nice. Vander Meer was a tough card. The man throws two consecutive no hitters and makes his card pricey! Thanks so much for watching!
90 years young! Wow, kudos to your mom! Omigosh, those old home movies from our youths -- they bring such fond memories! The thing that infuriated our dads the most: When they tried to take still photos, some kids would always be squirming around. Then when they shot movies of us, we'd be standing stock still. And there was always some kid who mistook the whole indoor movie setup for an alien monster and started to cry or hide. Thanks for the laughs you brought me, Rick!
I remember once a month sitting in the living room and the home movies would come out. My Dad had his screen and take his projector out. Definitely a different era! We have the same memories, Michael! Mom's 90th birthday was a smashing success! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Rick: Great hearing about your Christmas reminiscing. Merry Christmas.
Christmas is a time for reminiscing for me. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Great pick ups this year. Those 41 Playballs are really nice. Congrats on completing the set and 63 and 68s. The 36 Diamond Stars are one of my favorite sets.
Thanks Dave! I was very lucky this year. Diamond Stars are BEAUTIFUL, 33/34 Goudey and 41 Play Ball are all great sets.
That was a great year Rick. A lot of great adds and now I gotta look for frank crosetti lol😅 it's a really nice card. Merry Christmas to you my friend enjoy the holidays and your mom's birthday.
awww thanks Jesse. Hopefully the next year brings you a Frank Crosetti card! I look forward to seeing you in Ontario. Have a Merry Christmas, my friend!
That's one heck of a good year you had Rick! Congrats and Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Mike. Have a very Merry Christmas my friend! I will see you in Ontario!
Hello Rick. Thanks for showing your 68 Topps set. Sounds like we have similar stories about this set. I too just recently (2022) completed mine. Up until then, I had all sets back to 1970 so in 2022 I bought the 69 and hand built the 68. See in 1969, at age ten, I got the Milton Bradley board game. The Rod Cares and Reggie Smith were my favorites. I never hung on to my early 68s but always aspired to heave it. That was a fun project. How long did it take you to put it together?
HI Daniel: Sounds like you have an impressive collection. Would love to hear about your collection sometime. The 1968 set took about 7-8 months to complete. I usually take about a year to finish. 50 Bowman is the next set I am working on that has taken me a good year so far. Thanks so much for watching!
I do have a story I like to share regarding my building the 68 set. I also don't mind sharing my collecting story. What works best for me is email so not to clutter the comment section. Do you have an email you care to share? If not, I understand.
Hey Rick, nobody has more fun at shows than I do, especially when I get to hang with great collectors such as yourself. I have to tell you the ’68 Topps baseball set was the first set I built when I was a kid. Most of the cards I bought from a vending machine at a Coles Market growing up in Long Beach. When ever I had some change I would ride my bike over to Coles Market and pick up a stack of cards out of that vending machine. The memories of card collecting from when we were kids I think is an underrated part of the hobby. Great video as always and thanks for putting my info out there to the hobby community. Happy holidays.
Ahhhh thanks for your kind words, Mitch! I see the good time you have at shows and you're inspiring me to go to more shows. Someday, I am going to sit next to you at my own table! I still have a lot to learn. What was the location of Coles Market? I bought my cards at a liquor store or at Thrifty's. God, I would get so excited buying packs back then. Thanks so much for watching, Mitch. I look forward to seeing you in Ontario! Happy Holidays!
@@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector The Coles Market was on Spring St. near Palo Verde. Yes, there was also Plaza Liquors in the same shopping center that had cards. You mentioned Thrifty’s (which was almost across the street from Millikan on Palo Verde), I will always remember seeing a cello rack pack of ’68 Topps baseball with a Willie Mays on top, but I had no cash to buy it. One that got away.
Hey Rick! I enjoyed seeing you thumb through the 68 set. While I like the overall aesthetic of the set, I am drawn most to the history it represents. The World Series Tigers wjth Lolich, McClain, Horton Freehan and Kaline. Not to mention the fantastic team card. Of course, it was the year of the pitcher with all those great seasons that were had. Yaz wins the AL batting crown with a .301 average! Crazy! That Managers Dream card with Killebrew, Mantle and Mays is fantastic. Three old lions took a moment for camera. You have a beautiful set! I think the Bob Elliott has one of tbe nicest backgrounds in the set. The Heegan is a beauty too. You got a good deal for $80. Thanks for sharing!
Terry, the 1968 Tigers team card for some reason turned out nicer than the other teams. The League Leader cards for some reason also capture my attention. Yaz winning the battle title with a 301 average is crazy indeed. I thunk he was the AL player to bat over 300. I didn't appreciate The Managers Dream card as a kid probably because I didn't really appreciate Harmon Killebrew, but I love the guy now. I think he hit the most home runs in the 60s? He;s a fantastic player and it's a fantastic card. Love my new Boman pickups. 50 more to go! Thanks for watching, Terry!
Hey Rick…that 68’ Reggie Smith card has always been one of my favorites. I dont feel he gets enough credit for the rise of that 1967 Impossible Dream Red Sox team when he had a great rookie year as well as those great Dodger teams from 77’ to 81’. Growing up in Encino he was always one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing your 68’ set. Happy Holidays to you 👍
I agree with you about Reggie Smith. I collect cards today because his 68 offering in a Milton Bradley board game I got at ten years old.
@@danielbernier6095 He was SO good. I think there might be some validity with the fact that he played the same time Reggie Jackson played and has been overlooked. But he was an elite hitter and very good outfielder on many winning teams 👍
Todd thanks for the response. Not sure if you are familiar wth the channel "The Athlete Archives", but Gordon had me on to do a talk on Reggie Smith. If interested, you can find it by searching videos on his channel. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
@@danielbernier6095 oh Wow….I’ll definitely check that out. Thanks for letting me know and Happy Holidays. 😎
@@danielbernier6095 Dan…I just watched your video about Reggie Smith with Gordon. Great video and killer Reggie Smith collection! I subscribed to his channel after watching a couple other cool mini documentaries he had on Rick Monday and The Bird. Thanks for introducing the channel to me and I’ll write to Reggie Smith if you do. Deal? 😎🙂
Coming after one of the best-looking sets of all time in 1967, collecting the 1968 set in 1968 must have been a "WTF?" moment. One of the oddest design choices ever. Not as bad as 1980 Hockey or Basketball, but still weird.
Mark, I AGREE on that 1968 remark. I LOVE the 1967 set. I'd like to work on that set one day. Thanks for watching!
Thanks again, happy holidays 😊
Yeah, Rick! I will always have a special feeling for the 1968 Topps set as it was the first one that I really collected as a kid. I only have a few of those cards now. In the early '70's, I actually bought an entire set for $18! But I sold it for quite a bit more than that several years ago. Since I started collecting again, I've been picking up some of my favorite cards from the set. Those 1950 Bowman cards are nice, too.
Gannon, you bought the 1968 set for $18?? OMG, I love that! That was a lot of money back then. I remember the 1971 set going for $25 around 1975 and thinking how on earth am I going to pay for that?? LOL! Think you'll ever build the 68 set again? Thanks for watching!
@RickAcostaDodgerCardCollector Yes, $18! If only I had bought two or three! And I got a 1971 set for the same price. As you were saying, it was a lot of money back then. I think, if I remember correctly, you would have been around 10 when you got your set. I was around 14 when I got mine. I really needed the cash when I sold those sets, and the money I got from them really helped me out. The only thing that ticked me off was when I sold the '68 set, I forgot to take out the complete set of '68 game cards that I'd collected as a kid that were in the back of the binder! Well, at least I had doubles of Mantle, Mays, and Aaron, which I still have. As far as the future goes, I'm not gonna rebuild the entire set. I'm just gonna pick up cards from it that I really loved. Right now, I have three Roger Maris cards and a couple of Mays'. I always loved the manager cards from that set, as well as the team cards. Each one of those team cards gave me a different feeling. The colors actually helped shape how I felt about the teams. I particularly loved the blue Dodgers team card. Still do.
Great video! Many memories of 1968 cards. I was the youngest kid in the neighborhood. When kids got board of their cards, I bought them for really cheap. One box, I bought for a dollar, had 4 mantles in it.
Have to check them out I m here in the Inkand Empire ❤ great pick ups
I'll be honest, not a great show but it depends on what you collect. When the show doesn't cost me a nickel for admission or parking, it's just nice spending an hour or two looking at cards. They have another show on January 11th.
That d best I m looking for you never know what you will find Thanks for the informations 👍🏻
