These reminiscences about buying cards in the old days are so enjoyable and relaxing. I'm figuring that when you were first buying cards, a wax pack cost 10 or 15 cents. 1972 was certainly a psychedelic peak for Topps. I think the reason so many highs and semi-highs are in nice shape is that the youngsters weren't playing with them for as long as they did with cards in the earlier series. I know it was that way with my cards from my youth.
Michael, I know I paid 10 cents for 1973 wax, I didn't buy 1972 except for vending machine that would sell me five cards for a nickel. Being on the coast, I always wonder if the cards even made it to California. I am assuming at least Series 5 did, but I heard that Series 5 and 6 both came out during football season. I know I jumped to football for a few weeks when the season started but usually lost interest after a few weeks. I miss buying packs until I see someone on UA-cam open a pack of vintage and I see the garbage he bought. hahaha! Thanks for your kind words, Michael!
Beautiful. I don’t have the same patience to do a full set but love doing subsets like 56 Topps HoFers or my fav design 60 all star subset. I do love love love the feel of turning binder pages though. My only set currently is my 1948 exhibits HOF set. Thanks for sharing stories and your collection.
Edison, PATIENCE is a good word I should have used. Building a set does require patience and I am surprised I am a set builder because I honestly have no patience. I think subsets are a great idea. I want to do more subsets if I plan on not building that particular set. 1948 Exhibits is a very nice set!!! Have a great weekend, my friend!
Hey Rick, what a beautiful '72 set you have. I love the colors and design of the '72 set. I know it’s said to have a psychedelic feel, and I can see it. I always thought the font and raised lettering gave it the look of a theater marquee. Bench, Reggie, Billy Williams, Wills, and Munson could be the best page ever, and then you add Seaver, Stargell, and Lolich on the next page. Thanks for pointing that out. I also remember the Garvey and Carew being so expensive. It seemed like the second-year Garvey was as much as the rookie. I was thrilled when I added both to my collection. I didn’t know that the awards were included in the '72 baseball set. The OPC hockey sets had awards from '69 to '72. I checked to confirm the date range. I didn’t realize they did it for that many years. It’s a nice added feature beyond just the standard player photos. I find it interesting that baseball is the only sport that did multi-player rookie cards. You don’t see that in vintage football, hockey, or basketball, and those are much smaller sets. Thanks for sharing the set and the background. I really enjoyed this.
Hi Terry 1972 is a very nice set, a lot of great players in the set. Yes, that one page I showed had a lot of great players. Amazing to see them all in a row. As kids, we talked about the Garvey and Carew's and felt they were untouchable. No one we knew owned them. I didn't know OPC showed off awards. I'll have to look those up today. I also never thought about the mutual player RC's until you brought it up. I wonder who thought that up? Now I have all these things to think about. hahaha. Thanks for watching!
Love the 72 set also. So far of the sets I’ve built, it was the most challenging to complete. I am currently 3/4’s of the way done with 67 and halfway done with 66; both missing tons of high numbers. I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. Love the videos!!
Hi Rick, great walk through of your 1972 set. Mel Stottlemyre did indeed have not only a 73 card, but a 74 and 75 (he was released in March of 75 and the card had already been printed) The boyhood stars cards were never my favorites...kinda thought it was weird they would do those. LOL.
Hey Rick. Really enjoyed that. It was very relaxing watching you go through the whole set. When the set first came out, I wasn't that crazy about it, but now I like it a lot. You're making me think about putting the set together. Thanks for the details on the A's uniforms and the Rangers not having their own hats in the photos until '73. Btw, Stottlemyre had cards through 1975. For me, the '72 set represents the last burst of creativity on the part of Topps, as beginning in '73 they started that whole white inlay run, with of course, a brief respite in '75. Maybe that was the last burst. But after '73, the cards started more or less looking the same (excluding '75) with minor differences. Just my take. One other thing, and I may be in the minority here, but I always felt the "traded" cards were an insult to the player! I mean, who wants to have a card that shows they weren't wanted? Of course, somebody else wanted them, but still. And then the way they have the "Traded" stamped on the front of the card like they are being branded with a cattle iron. Again, my take, lol. Off the subject, I noticed that Battersbox raised the amount of money you have to spend before you get free shipping, from $10 to $21. Oh well, what are we gonna do? Anyway, great video, and you have a beautiful 1972 set.
Thank you, Gannon! Yeah, I was like you. Did not like as a kid. I thought the design was just out there. Now I think it's a great looking design and set. I totally forgot when Stottlemyre stopped pitching. I am going have to look at my 73, 74 and 75 cards to remember what he looked like. I was always hot/cold with the designs on the 70's. As a kid I did not like 1975, but love it now. Liked 76 but still can't stand 77. Interesting take on the 72 cards. I have not heard that viewpoint before but it's a valid take. Battersbox changed their rates? I didn't;t notice that. Luckily I have nothing in my car ATM. lol Thanks for your kind words, Gannon!
Hi rick just to let you know how to complete a set in the 70's larry fritsh sold me a ryan rookie 15$ my dad bought alot from a guy called t.j. schwartz i think he was a big time writer for a bbc magazine
Page after page of enjoyment! This video is proof of the joy of set collecting. This 1972 set is a snapshot of an era. Loved this video Rick!
Thanks Chuck! 1972 is such great set!
Great looking set! Probably the most rewarding set when you're finished. 🎉🎉
I agree, Eric. That 1972 set was just a mammoth to build. Thanks for watching!

You have a great collection Rick.
Thank you my friend! Have a great weekend!
Nice Rick! The 72 set is one of my all time favorites. Picked up a bunch of them at my first card show back in 1981. Cheers and go Dodgers!
1972 is definitely a fun set! Always appreciate you watching, Go Blue!

Oh I want to see your 66 and 67 sets when you're done. I would like to 1967 one day. I hear both those sets are a pain. Thanks so much for watching!
Well done 🎉
Thank you, my friend! I hope you have a nice weekend!

Mike, I never liked the boyhood stars in 1972 and 1973 either. Kinda creepy! hahaha! Have a good Sunday!

Another set collector!! I love it! It's fun having ALL the cards.

I used to buy from Larry Fritsch as a kid. What.a deal your dad got for the Ryan! That's a great deal. Thanks for watching!
