When I was a boy and we did everything mail order, 1960s, I once asked a company what they would want for the complete high series, and they replied $4.95. Well, from the point of view of a preteen boy, they may as well have said $100. So I passed. In retrospect, I should've promised my parents to do extra chores for a couple months just to get the money. Those 1950 Bowman star cards you showed are just such stunning poses. That's when they did real artwork, not color splashes and AI.
Michael this is my first knee issue and don't like it. HAHAHA. The one thing I am lucky in regards to 1961 is that I own all of the All-Star cards, but the commons aren't cheap. So far, I'm paying $10-$15 a card. $4.95 was A LOT of money back then! I saw a company in 1974-75 selling the 1971 set for $25. My brother and I cringed, I keep saying if we had bought those cards as kids, we wouldn't have them today. Who knows? 1950 is definitely a nice set. If I can get the Williams, a lot the more expensive cards are out of the way. I hope to buy one this year! Always appreciate you watching!
Hi Rick, You're right about finding joy in your own collection while also appreciating the cards others acquire. We all have different budgets and priorities in life. A great collector isn't necessarily the one who writes the biggest check for high-profile cards-there’s so much more to it. As we discussed via text, that could be a video topic or livestream on its own. I hope you can get your Ryan and/or Ted Williams cards. I love seeing a Mickey Mantle card in a video. It’s always a special feeling when you add one to your collection-at least it is for me. It never gets old, even when I pick up one of his magazines from his playing days. It’s Mickey Mantle! I enjoyed hearing the stories behind the cards you acquired. I’d take a '64 Topps Maris to make up for tax-such a great card with him looking up. I wonder what he’s staring at. Maybe Mantle hitting a home run in batting practice. The pose on the Roberts card is cool-so stylized and very '50s. The '54 Topps set isn’t a favorite of mine, but I do like, and have, the Spahn. Terry, Someday when I stop procrastinating, we need to do the what makes a great collection live stream. Regarding Mantle, everytime I buy a Mantle, I say that's it, no more Mantle's, but then another shows set with a Mantle shows up on the horizon. hahaha Maris was staring at the group of reporters he still didn't want to speak with. lol. Hopefully I can get to the Burbank card show one of these days. An 8 hour drive doesn't sound like a fun time though. What's the closest airport to fly into to go to the show? Love the '64 Maris!
That's a great question, Jim. The summer show is in Anaheim so you'd want to fly into John Wayne but the winter show in February is in Ontario which is right next to Ontario International. Anaheim is bigger but they're both very good shows. Let me know one day when you come down and we can meet up. Yeah, that Maris is a nice one. Almost makes up me having to pay sales tax on the Ted Williams card. FYI I drove six hours up to Sacramento last month and I think that's what jacked up my knee. Flying is smart!!!
