Summer Kiln Opening 2024 Tour of Mark Hewitt Pottery barn/gallery presenting pots from Firing 111
Once a working farm building, the massive hay barn at the Mark Hewitt Pottery tucked at the end of the Johnny Burke Rd in Pittsboro, NC is now a stunning pottery gallery filled with the beautiful pottery from the recent firing of Mark's massive wood-burning kiln. This was Firing 111, and the 40th anniversary of the first firing of the kiln that Mark built in 1983 when he first came to NC, and then filled with pots and fired in the spring 2024.
There have been many changes to the late 19th century farmhouse and its outbuildings - renovations, gardens established, and thousands of finely handcrafted pots made and fired that now are enjoyed by people all over the globe.
This video is a sneak preview of the wonderful pots that will be available at the '2024 Summer Kiln Opening.' These are open studio events that happen only twice a year.
Saturday, June 1 • 10-5pm

Hey Mark, are you standing up while you do this? I really want to continue throwing but it's hurting my back sitting down. Is there a different skillset you employ when doing it standing up? Any differences? Would you share your experience with that

Thanks for the update. I was reading the other day about succession in the Raku family. The master, who was in his 70's, has retired and his son, in his 50's, has taken over the head of the family pottery business. Apparently this has been a pattern for a few hundred years. The retired master continues to work, without the burden of being the star. Maybe it's an amateur status. Making pots for the love of the craft.

Joe! What a presumptuous remark! Not only is Mark doing what he wishes to do, but is continuing the art of ceramics having young apprentices learn from him. Yes, they do help in the pottery and get some compensation. Nevertheless this is exceptionally generous. Please don’t assume that a person needs another type of ceramic endeavour.

Yes, it's a blend of four local and regional "wild" clays that I used to prepare myself here, but now Starworks prepares the same blend. It's more expensive than doing it myself, but their equipment is way better and the clay is consequently more plastic and uniform.
