    I could never understand any picture with colour swatches. Are the swatches meant to be the colours in the picture or are they the colours that I need to mix to get the colours in the picture?

    • @artonthecreek
      @artonthecreek 11 годин тому

      On the color cube cards, the swatches of color are exact matches to the key colors found in the example photo. Their digital hex codes and value variations are on the reverse of each card.

      If you go to Sara's website, it might be helpful to you. She gives a simple explanation, said different ways. Since she is a colored pencil artist, there are a myriad of colors that come in a set of pencils so as a painter with 12 to 48 or so colors in your paintbox, you will end up mixing up some colors. This helps you learn mixes, too. I enjoy just looking at the boxes on my table, too, being a color junkie 😂

    I'm just finding this review... the pans are really intriguing! I have the set of 12 pencils; your comment about the pans smudging made me reach for my swatch and check whether or not they smudged and I fond that they did not. I wonder if this is a difference between the pans and the pencils or the difference between pigment that is freshly laid or pigment that has been in place for awhile? Anyways... the colors on the pans are mostly different than in the set of 12 pencils so I may pick these up to round out my palette. Do you have an affiliate link for them?

    Invest in a small tin/box of Holbein pencils. They're harder than the Prismas, not quite as hard as the PC's, but they lay down and blend really well. Expensive, yes, but you won't regret getting them.

    This was great fun Ann. I saw these paintings on Instagram, and (this will make you snigger), I did wonder what the prompt rush had to do with John Lennon 😂😂😂 Aaand…now I know - nothing! Never heard of the band, and if you are not a fan, I am highly unlikely to be so either 🤷‍♀️ What a fabulous idea putting several together as vignettes, it sort of takes a little of the pressure off pressuring yourself into coming up with a daily masterpiece, or even a single masterpiece in my case. I love the prompts and look forward to seeing many mini masterpieces this month from around the world. I make no promises, as I am in no mood to disappoint myself when I inevitably fail to post, or for that matter paint a single thing. I do like your idea of scanning the list for a prompt that appeals, as that may be doable! Happy Busy (umm, I mean World) Watercolour Month my friend!! 👩🏻‍🎨🖌️🎨🥰. Great tutorial, I too like these over the WN. Cellulose paper I find works really well and better than cotton, if you use cotton, hot press over toothed. These markers... They have changed my JOY game in playing with watercolor. I think I like the sense of drawing and inking at the same time. It's so much fun and they are so saturated. They also really DO granulate well depending on the colour you choose, as they are TRUE watercolor pigment and not dye. I have been LOVING them. I especially enjoy being able to draw over the work again with the markers to create more depth and texture. Layering has been interesting to see the results. I have been playing with them along with 99% isopropyl and 70%. It's so much fun to see how it just melts the colour. So many FUN things to do with these. It's really FUN Play! You did a great job on that little green guy. I enjoyed watching you in the process of creation. It just feels like MAGICK!

    Wow that's fantastic 😊 luv the tiny robins awww great video. Out of interest do you know if the cold wax will protect watercolor from fading as well? I guess it will but not 100% sure 🤔 xx

    • @artonthecreek
      @artonthecreek 6 днів тому

      Hi Jenny! Thank you so much! If I understand pigments and lightfastness correctly, it is up to the pigment itself to dictate how lightfast something is. Cold wax medium only contains beeswax and gamsol (and in some cases small amounts of some type of resin.) None of those will work as a UV protectant to my knowledge. Full disclosure: I am guessing based on conjecture from what I know so I may be wrong. You might have to Google this one, but I really don’t suspect that it can be used to prolonglightfastness. I hope that helps!

    What a sweet Robin. It was lovely to see a European Robin for a change as it is quite different to the American Robins I often see depicted. You did make him somewhat uppity and grumpy looking which made me grin, as they are quite cheeky little birds. Cold wax medium offers so much more choice on what we can do with watercolour paintings. I love that it means it can also be attached to a wooden cradle and hung without the necessity of using glass, along with the ability to post our work around the globe. I wonder if it adds any protection against UV rays? 🤔👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️👏🏻👏🏻🥰

    • @artonthecreek
      @artonthecreek 7 днів тому

      Yes absolutely it can be used to protect watercolor without framing under glass. I wouldn’t think it adds anything to lightfastness. It’s made of beeswax & gamsol. (Just a guess on my part.)

    Marker art has always been somewhat of an enigma to me, which may seem a little odd now I come to think about it, because the whole layering with various colours is quite similar to that of watercolour. Watching you create our beautifully mature Tink was great fun, even if as I said I find it hard to relate to them 🤷‍♀️ As ever though, any artistic endeavour in your hands, is an endeavour very much worth watching. Huh… you have been the only artist I have watched using these colour cubes, and managing to sell me on the fact that they can indeed be a very useful tool. Am I wrong in thinking that when they first came out, they were more expensive, than what you paid? I do remember my eyes bleeding at the shipping costs from Australia though 🫣 Perhaps if I am in funds once more over the coming months/year(!) I will splurge on them as a gift to myself, but this shall be highly unlikely until at least Christmas/Birthday 2025!! 😢 Thank you for a wonderful explanation, resulting in an extremely successful painting. 👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️👏🏻❤️

      Anita, you and I are so alike! When these first came out, I didn’t even see why they would be useful. That’s evidenced in how long I waited to purchase them, and I genuinely am happy with them because they are so versatile. I enjoy using a limited palette in colors that go against the normal expected range of colors for a subject-I’m sooo happy you enjoyed this and the final painting! I have noticed the portrait in your background set from time to time, depending on where you have been sitting, and admired it very much. Honestly, if you were simply to rattle off all of the colours used, I would imagine a bit of a horror show. However, they are extremely well balanced, and your portrait showed the nuances of these colours very well. Portraiture is not something I have a hankering to do myself, but that would never stop me admiring those that take to it like a duck to water, like you obviously have. I already love your charcoal and soft pastel portraits, and now I can add watercolour to the list! 🥰👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️😘👏🏻👏🏻

      That praise is high, and I very humbly and sincerely thank you !! For the longest time I didn’t like the portrait. It took 2 months of letting it sit for me to appreciate it…it almost made it to the garbage bin! I’m happy to say I just bought her a frame☺️ Yes, the colors in Ali’s set kind of blew my mind at first…then it all just made sense. So much more sense than any other combinations of colors for skin tones. Ali’s palette was truly a lightbulb moment for me. Thank you 🩷🩷🩷

    I use this to waterproof the swatch cards which I include inside my watercolour palettes. I find the finish silkier and smoother than laminating them. Thanks for showcasing the Gamblin medium. What a great idea to use this to seal swatches! I’ve seen several artists use a laminating machine or clear backing tape but I always wonder if that changes the colors a bit visually or will it over time ? I’m like you I love the silkiness that cold wax medium imparts🩵🩵

    What a very beautiful Lily. I don’t believe I have seen it before, not even in my many gardening books. I can’t quite remember if you said you yourself recognised it. Loved the painting, and was surprised to hear you say you were going for a more gestural approach, because when you once more zoomed in on the Lily, your painting was a pretty realistic rendition. Your florals are coming along in leaps and bounds! You still go from strength to strength for someone who had little interest in the subject just a few months ago. I love that your style is so fluid and that you have the ability to tweak it across both subject matter and medium. As ever, I bow to your skills. It was lovely to see Leslie in person. If, like me, sketching or painting in public holds a few horrors, being able to buddy up or meet in a larger group must be more conducive to relaxation. I hope many more decide to make it, if they live in the area. Thank you for a wonderfully relaxing video…👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️🪷❤

      Lovely comments, Anita…thank you indeed, my friend. I do know Canna Lilies and they are a popular potted plant in the summers here. I’ve even grown them myself in the backyard! I had no idea, though, that they could be submerged in water as a water lily! That was exciting to know as I love how it gives some height to a lily pond. I don’t know exactly what it is I don’t enjoy about painting florals, because although I say that fairly often and don’t think I do them justice, every time I paint any plant, blooming or not, I enjoy both the process and the result. I am surely a riddle wrapped in an enigma 🤔😂 It was GREAT to have Leslie join me, and I hope in the months ahead we’ll see a repeat! Yes, painting in numbers (not BY numbers!!) is wonderful in so many ways💕 You know for certain that I would lessen the miles between us if I could!

    Great review, but I think you're comparing apples and oranges. My big question was just whether they were the same colors...apparently not,...as a compare, I think you just can't compare a hard lead with a soft lead...even tho they show a completed picture with the verithin, they are obviously designed for just details.
