Is Your Venus flytrap Dormant or Sick?
Leah shows several examples of healthy, dormant Venus flytraps. Then she shows some examples of Venus flytraps that are in declining health for comparison. Seeing these examples could help new or confused growers notice the difference between healthy dormant Venus flytraps and ones that might need a repot or and adjustment to their care regimen.

Repotting Venus flytraps in sphagnum peat mix (FlytrapStore soil mix)
Hi Lea, Thanks so much for your educative video. I got just one question. I usually leave my potted flytraps outside until frosts but then when these hard frosts come I typically get scared and put them in dark basement where it gets temperatures from 7 to 10 C (44 to 50 F). So my question is how cold is toocold for potted flytraps cause I dont want to damage them.. Thanks a lot for your reply in advance!
Bought one at Target few months back. Watered it or sprayed water on it. Dropped annoying little roaches, and 2 weeks later the Venus Fly Trap died
same. No one tells you that you need to repot them in hurry or they will be dead before you blink. I bought one thinking it was so neat and boom, dead.
Great examples! I got my first plant this summer and it’s going through its first winter, leaving it outside. Been through several nights in the low 30s F and still looking good. Older traps turning black but several baby traps at the base.
They also need the cold, after all it's gets cold where they are from! Thanks Leah!
Great video! Very nice having visual indicators of what to look at, perfect for the new growers!
Thanks Jon! I'll pass that along to Leah 😊
Do you have your plants in Long Spragnum Moss ONLY?
In this video, yes, we are potting in long-fiber sphagnum moss with nothing added. If the sphagnum moss if of high quality, Venus flytraps grow exceptionally well in it. However, it is quite expensive and requires more frequent repotting than a peat-based mix. We now primarily use peat moss mixed with silica sand and perlite.
Hi I’m living in NJ. Any suggestions for dormancy here? It gets down to 20s to 10sF. Right now weather is 50s-60s this week. Thanks for all your informative video! 😊
We typically recommend keeping them outdoors as much as possible. When there is a chance of frost or freeze, they can be placed on a sunny windowsill or on a porch to protect them. They can tolerate freezing and frost just fine but grow better if they don't experience it. If they are left out in the frost or in a freeze, be sure to keep them thoroughly hydrated, as the only damage that usually happens is freeze burn when they can't stay hydrated enough when the soil freezes.
Very helpful thank you, just got one question I'm a bit confused about, mycorrhizae and fungicide? Won't that conflict between each other?
That's a good observation! We only mist the fungicide, primarily on the leaves of the tissue as it is potted out. The mycorrhizae is used as a soil drench, so hopefully the conflict between the two is minimal.
I hope you can answer my question despite being very late! is it normal to find minor discoloration (brownish) on SOME NEW leaves when acclimating to dormancy? I have a b52 in a tropical country and i acclimate them by gradual shortening of photoperiod as well as weekly increasing their time on my fridge at 10°C. Might I add that it also concerns ne that the browning seem spread on the leaf its on
I had a VFT that I left outside and something, a slug or snail I think started eating the baby traps and leaving the leaves.
Hi Matt what is your greenhouse temperature set at for your swamp cooler. I also have a greenhouse with flytraps and was wondering what the high temperature should be. Also do you water from the top or tray only? Thanks and I love your plants amazing!!
Thank you for the kind feedback! Unfortunately, the greenhouse (hoop-house) in the video doesn't have a swamp cooler. So temperatures get super hot in summer. The flytraps hate it, so this year I moved my personal collection of flytraps to the greenhouse where I have the swamp cooler. It is set to kick on at 88°F. Anything around 90°F or cooler is ideal for flytraps in summer. This year I left my personal collection of flytraps in the hoop-house (uncooled) until July and much of my collection suffered. Temps were well over 100°F (40°C) and flytraps do not grow well in temperatures that hot.
Any update?? I'd love to see the progression
Sorry for the lack of updates! The All Red Fused Tooth ended up getting crown rot and I didn't catch it soon enough to save it (I should have treated them both with a fungicide upon opening the box). The African Werewolf is huge now and going strong. I'll try to get a video posted before it goes completely dormant.
Bummer about the fused tooth! but it's Great to hear you were able to bring back the Werewolf! Looking forward to the video 👍 These plants are Phenomenal
I would like to buy seed they are hard to find in the Netherlands
Thank you! I learned from this video that my flytrap needs more light.
What are the large terracotta -looking plants made out of? I'd like to repot mine into deeper pots like that.
They are painted polyurethane foam pots.
what kind of pot is the big pot? what is it made of?
Polyurethane foam 😊
0:10
Its not possable to hear, sorry.
This is, daniel 12:4. Technology shall increase .
I just wanted to say thank you so much for the content and you guys both are amazing! I apologize in advance if you answer this question in another video, I just found your channel. I was wondering though if the planting of carnivorous plants in terracotta or clay/ceramic does really leech too many minerals/salts. I'm asking because in this video it seems you are repotting the fly traps in a sort of ceramic pot. Wanted to know if this pot was double fired maybe or if thay is one of the myths.
The pot in the video is a polyurethane foam pot with a terra cotta paint job. A lot of people see them and think they're terra cotta. I believe that unsealed terra cotta might pose a risk to flytraps by leeching minerals into the soil, but I've never actually tested out using terra cotta pots, so I can't speak from experience.
Oh awesome, thank you for the reply. Good to know.
How many grams of moss is this?
You mean to fill that 3 inch pot? I'd guess maybe 10 grams or less (dry).
i bought a Venus fly trap on Amazon. Got a new acrylic square Planter put a layer on leca on the bottom, some cocos fibre on top, them Irish peat moss mixed with perlite. Then gave it a good soak with distilled water and put it under a Aquarium light for 10 h a day. A week later the Plant was dead !! what have i done wrong ??
Behind you, Iove the 12-in-deep resin planters, Tuscan-style, that you use for your Venus fly traps.
Which type of grow light would be best for a fly trap?
There are many good LED options these days but unfortunately I am not well-versed in lighting options. I've mostly grown under fluorescent bulbs with a 6500K color temperature. I have also used a Spiider Farmer LED fixture. Both work great. However, the best option is natural sunlight. Indoor growing is riddled with problems and unnecessary challenges that aren't encountered when growing outdoors or in a greenhouse.
@@MattMillerFlytrapStore we can't grow outdoors in Canada during our long winters, this is why I'm wondering
@Rose_A many growers in Canada grow outside during the summer months, then either do a fridge dormancy or use a sunny, south-facing windowsill in winter.
can one sprinkle with tap water cause crown and leaf rotting?
I don't think so. Crown rot is a fungal issue, from over watering or just being stagnant. If you want them to grow better use a distilled water, but tap water is better than nothing for now. Rinse the peat good once you get good distilled water to get the minerals from the tap water out.
@@charliegarrison9688 I don't water it with tap water, I do it with rain water. but my kid sprinkled it with tap water from bottle. and after that it got brown spots. I think it will be ok, it is just adaptation period
Do you guys fertilize or any supplemental feeding of VFTs
No. I never fertilize the flytraps. I do occasionally catch a bug and feed them but I do not have a regular feeding routine. However, they do grow faster if fed!
that shirt tuff ngl
Is moss on the top very bad for them …I am wondering if it’s smothering my Sarracenia, I can’t find all these lovely varieties in U.K.
Sarracenia aren't bothered by carpet moss unless they're very small. They grow quickly and vigorously enough that they can push their way through most things, including the sides of pots!!
Hope you guys are doing great! I was excited to find your videos. It’s nice to hear your voice, Leah! 🤗
Thanks Sarah!!
Hi Sarah! It's so great to hear from you! Hope you're doing well. Your DCXL photo remains epic. :) Leah
My other flytrap just seems to stop growing. I put it through winter dormancy. It grew a couple of warped traps then just stopped growing altogether. It sits next to my B-52‘s which are growing fine now.
Are the pots in the video plastic?
Nope. Those are insulated polyurethane foam pots.
when you top water them in dormancy how much water do you give them ? until its comes out of the Bottom ?
Yes, I always thoroughly moisten the soil whenever I water them. For the large pots that I don't have in trays, that means watering until water flows out of the bottom.
@@MattMillerFlytrapStore got it thanks :)
A wealth of info here. Great vid that pointed out many things I was not aware of. Thx!
Thanks Ed!!
Thanks so much! :)
I was wondering when fly traps come out of dormancy and if you can tell
When Venus flytraps start growing in the spring depends on the conditions. In our greenhouses in Missouri, new growth is noticeable by late January or early February. However, when we lived in Oregon, some years they wouldn't really put out much growth before April. Basically, when temperatures are consistently above 70 during the day, and the days are at least 12 hours long, flytraps will break dormancy.
I’m trying to have a nice collection too. They almost grow at the rate a Douglas fir grows!! Lolol😂😂😂 patience, patience! And hurry! 😊
Sarracenia can grow quite quickly! I've taken seeds to maturity in about 18 months. Not super fast but not terribly slow either. And once they reach maturity, most types grow and divide quite quickly. So just stick with it!
Beautiful plants!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Update on this one ? :)
Been meaning to get one out! The African Werewolf is doing well but the AR Fused Tooth unfortunately got crown rot. I should have treated it with fungicide upon unboxing them!
@@MattMillerFlytrapStore what fungicide can you recommend ?
I’ve noticed my fly traps are growing deformed I think from spider mites. How often should I spray them with insecticide? Also, how often can I spray my fly traps with Maxsea fertilizer?
Spider mites don't deform traps. The signs of spider mites are yellowing and browning traps. Deformed traps are usually caused by aphids or thrips. As for fertilizer, we don't fertilize our flytraps. We've tried controlled experiments a number of times over the years and the plants with fertilizer did not grow noticeably faster. They did, however, have a lot of algae and carpet moss in the pots.
Matt you inspire me to have a greenhouse full of carnivorous plants!
Haha, thanks!
You've got me interested.
Flava rubricorpora x purp montana
Thanks Eric!
Great name!
Are they separate plants? Do you have to water the upper plant or just the lower?
The plant will live for a long time on the stalk but will eventually die when the stalk dies. It can be cut off and potted up before that happens.
Okay I need 4 new ones, I probably need to narrow that down.
😅 which ones caught your eye?
Some of the best collections I have seen! By the way, where do you get your polyurethane foam pots? I live in horrible California in zone 9, the desert in San Bernardino County. I want to try out polyurethane foam pots for my plants and see if they grow better in those pots.
I was always told to not put that moss in like peat but like coil it around in the pot like a snake kinda is this true?
Awesome collection. I have a S. Alata. The plant is actually finally pretty big, but all of the pitchers are growing floppy and to the sies. What could be causing my pitchers to not grow straight up? Would it be too late to cut old pitchers off? Bould it be the lack of sun light from so many pitchers clumped together. Should I repot it, or is it too late? Do you have a video on how to divide them?
S. alata pitcher tend to fall over quite easily. It's possible to use something to help hold them up, or you can just trim them off if they are too unsightly.
I though terracotta pots were bad for carnivorous plants.
Not sure where you think you saw terra cotta pots, but we've never used any. All our pots are either plastic, Styrofoam, or insulated polyurethane foam.
Oh okay, I thought the mother plants were in terracotta pots. 😂 👍 Your collection is AWESOME by the way!
@@Jesus-eg3yb Nope! Those are insulated polyurethane foam pots that are painted. And thanks for the kind feedback on the plants!!
Amazing, thanks for sharing.
They totally catch their own food, there really is no reason to feed them. If you have them in the sun, they produce lots of sugar which they secrete on the traps. That attracts the flies.
