  • Matt gives a late April tour of his Venus flytrap collection. The flytraps have put up their spring traps and, despite being recently repotted, are putting up some really nice traps. They're also nearly in full flower with the first few flowers opening and many more to come.

    How do you avoid accidental cross pollination between flytraps? Or it that something you guys dont have to worry about? If say, you were crossing only two specific ones, but some pollen flew and got on some flowers?

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Рік тому +4

      That's something I'm not too worried about. While I do make a few specific novel crosses each year, most of the time the pollination I do is just whatever I think might be interesting at the moment and for the vast majority of the flowers I don't even keep track of what the crosses are.
      I also usually pollinate the flowers multiple times a day for the novel crosses I want and I've never really noticed any sort of unwanted cross pollination happening ober the 15 years or so I've been doing this. And the reality for me is as long as the plants set seed, I'm happy 😊

    Hi Matt, I wonder if you ever came across this. The G16 started to flower, but of course I cut the flower stalk. The traps started sprouting like crazy! I mean like 10 are sprouting at a same time. But in this cluster of sprouts, I noticed a couple without a potential traps at the end. Just a very pointy tip. Have you ever come across this? I’ll definitely find out in a couple weeks what it will look like.

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Рік тому +3

      Yes, that happens often in the spring. As flytraps break dormancy and start flowering they can put out some crazy growth. Double traps, half formed traps, leaves with no traps, etc., are all fairly common occurrences during the spring.

    Awesome collection! Matt, I live in San Bernardino County, California and it gets extremely hot here. I can't seem to find Square white pots of good size or even white deep trays to hold the water. I see you have white square pots and white deep trays. Can you please share where I can purchase some such as the ones you have?

      I would second this hydroponics shop has the square pots as far as the trays I didn't see any at my shop.

    I was gifted one of these a few months ago and now I have 35 cultivars..I went Pokémon and tried to collect them all. I keep saying "one more" 😂 I'm not complaining I'm just saying that this little hobby is getting out of hand quickly

      @@LostCause187 It's so true that the hobby is addictive and can quickly get out of hand! When I started, there were only about 6-8 cultivars available in the US and only 2-3 of those you could actually purchase from vendors online. Obviously that has changed dramatically over the last 10-12 years! When I started FlytrapStore, we were one of the few vendors who sold more than a handful of Venus flytrap cultivars. Now there are likely over a hundred cultivars available from dozens of vendors around the world! So neat to see the hobby explode like it has!!

    Wow this was great. I was just watching your previous flytrap tours today. So very happy to see this come up. I hope I can order some plants from you soon in the next few weeks. So there are four plants in the WIP series? Wip snapper, Wip slim snapper, wip long snapper and wip big red snapper? I'd love to collect all of them. I have slim and long.

      Thank you!
      Yes, you have it right - there are 4 plants that were selected and named by Bob Hanrahan of World Insectivorous Plants (WIP). I think WIP Snapper is the first named cultivar to exist. WIP Slim Snapper, WIP Long Snapper and WIP Big Red Snapper are the other three.

      @Matt Miller - FlytrapStore Co-Owner for sure the best time of year is when they all start to re ignite with vigure. The mass of stems gets me right un the mood for propergation. Any specific crosses your working on this season that your happy to shair buddy. I'm hoping to try a few select crosses myself. Korrigen x triton for one just for the off chance of striking gold with both fusion traits passing on to one plant. Fussed trap edge combined with the trap/ petiola fusion of korigans. Would make for one realy unique shape.

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Рік тому +1

      @@lyonscultivars Korrigans x Triton could result in a really neat plant! If you are successful, please let me konw what the babies look like.
      I'm mostly crossing a few freaks like Booman's Mutant and GJ Giant Cudo with some vigorous red varieties and also doing a lot of crosses with scaling clones like Schuppenstiel, Trictherfalle, Trichterfalle x Coquillage, and an unnamed seed-grown with scaling with each other and red varieties to try to get an all-red Schuppenstiel.
