Historical costuming and corsetry with a heavy focus on humor. This is a safe space for all. Everyone is welcome ♥️
I Spent 1,000 HOURS Recreating This Lobster Bustle Gown!
Would you regret spending 1,000 hours recreating this fabulous lobster gown from an 1883 fashion plate? Follow along the 8-month journey as we build this sucker from the ground up!
I'm SO excited to finally share this make with you! From the hand-dyed fabric to the 26 (!) papier-mâché lobsters dangling from various parts of the gown, this thing took an immense amount of labor. The bodice is decorated in various puffs and lobsters and crowned with a felted lobster "little guy." The apron, or overskirt, is block printed with a hand-carved stamp and then hand painted with funny little lobster guys before getting trimmed and bustled. And the underskirt is covered in pleated voile "grass" before--yep, you guessed it!--getting covered in MOR LOBSTAS.
Even better? My friend made the accompanying Seagull gown, and we got to wear it to a Victorian event in December!
Is this the most epic bustle gown ever made? Maybe. It's certainly the most crustaceous.

Hand Sewing an 18th Century Queen of Hearts Cosplay!
Thank you for this! I’ve been meaning to dye a white lab coat black for a while for a cosplay (Buying a black one straight up is super expensive for some reason…) and this video was very helpful! I appreciate the humorous additions which made it a fun and educational watch at the same time 😊. You’re very creative! I was told a respirator mask is highly recommended, so I lucked out as I already have one as someone who does custom figurines on the side haha! Thanks again
i love love love this regency gown!! the gathering band at the bust and the sleeves and the glorious color and the silhouette...this gown is EVERYTHING!!!!!

here's my all-time favorite joke: Q: How many moles are there in guacamole? A: Avocado's number :)
This costume was amazing! I hope you go back and maybeadd a waterproof clear coat to your lobsters to make them better able to resist the weather - i want this to be worn many times!
6:59 "We're approaching this just like we would approach fitting a Victorian corset" Okay that has actually blown my mind though. Completely new perspective on my bodice fitting, I feel like so many problems I've been having have been solved just by how that's changed how I'm thinking about them. Thank you!!!!
🦞🦞🦞
Thank you for all the information. Should I remove the color off of my garment somehow before I do a fiber reactive dye?
As for general organisation tips (I am making this separate from my mending comment to assist with clarity)... I am a librarian, so I am (quite literally) a professional organiser. This doesn't mean that I am a tidy person (far from it- I am an ADHD chaos goblin!) and I frequently need to do a big sewing-room clean out, but within the mess there IS organisation. For me the key has always been everything needs to have a place that *makes sense*, so that even if something does not go back where it is supposed to straight away, it will eventually make it back to the same place and not to a "new home". The best way to make this happen is (a) organisable storage, rather than a mismatched set of boxes, bags and containers that are chucked together, (b) avoid anything that requires moving stuff around just to access it, and (c) label the crap out of everything. By using a whole lot of clear plastic drawers that are all the same size, they will sit well together on a shelf and not want to fall over if you look at it the wrong way. If you need to reshuffle your order to add an extra drawer (ie. you need two containers instead of one for your dye collections because you bought some more), then it is simple to add another without the "order" being messed up. Be careful of plastic tubs that you need to remove the lid from, because then you need to remove all the tubs stacked on top of something just to open it up, and that sounds too much like hard word (and you will leave that stray bottle of dye powder next to the tub instead of actually putting it back inside). As for labels, I cannot stress this enough. It is all well and good finding an Extra Safe Place to put that Important Thing, but if you don't remember where that is, it becomes pointless. Labels will ensure you will always know where to go to find your candle supplies, and you are less likely to end up with them in three different places because each time you bought something you put them in a different box of bag.
I know that this video is six months old at this point (for some reason YT unsubed you from my account), but there is only one thing that has helped me deal with my mending pile. The Australian UA-camr came up with #MendingMonday a few years ago, and this has actually worked for me. Each Monday I try and deal with one thing (or one part of a thing) from my mending pile. Just one. Even if it is a quick two-minute job, I don't try and do more. The aim is actually less about mending your clothes and more about habit forming. So I would rather have three weeks running of two-minute jobs than do them all at once in less than 10 minutes. If you can get in to the habit of mending just one item from your mending basket each week no matter how big or small the pile is, then "dealing with it" becomes a lot less stressful and overwhelming. Doing this has also helped me deal with the fact that this is an ongoing task that will never truly be over (a bit like folding your laundry). It is is part of my weekly chores- no different from washing my towels and changing my sheets- then it becomes routine. What you mend in the basket doesn't matter (and sometimes it is a 30 second machine repair to the inside of a shopping bag in a miss-matched thread colour), it is the fact that you mended SOMETHING becomes an achievement.
Lobster Madness! 🦞🦞🦞Turned out great but what an ordeal. I don't think I could put that much work into anything - I'm pretty slow when it comes to doing projects. Was the gown made out of cotton sateen? It looks quite pretty even if its not your color. Love the rapier at the beginning!! ⚔ 🧡💙
Thank you! Trust me, I was NOT expecting it to take as long as it did 😑 And yes, the bodice and the underskirt are sateen, but the overskirt is cotton twill, because it was cheaper.
Love your angry lobsters! You've stuck it out and condensed months of work into a few short minutes. WOW! You rock!
Thank you so much!!
The red dress your wearing at the beginning of the video is STUNNING! Do you have a video of making it?
Thank you! No, I purchased this dress from Linennaive, although I DID dye it that color, and I have several videos on fiber reactive dyeing linen if you're interested!
Amazing as always! I’ve been really enjoying your videos, the ones on the Angelica gown have been super helpful and motivating as I’ve decided to make my own wedding dress with that pattern as a base. Thanks so much. Also, if you want to do block printing again, I think a brayer might be the fix to your splotchiness problem? It rolls the ink on evenly and only puts it on the raised part of the stamp.
Thank you! I'm glad the Angelica gown videos are helpful, thanks for watching!
🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦐🦐🦐❤❤ I know how much work went into your dress and yes the rain damaged it but it was an epic costume, I do hope you are able to wear it again and hopefully you can fix it up and get even more wear, it's too quirky to just fade away. ❤
Thank you so much! 😊
🦞🦞🦞🦞 love it!!
Whoohoo! Thanks! So glad you enjoyed!
Your suppoition that the deeper teal between your face and the light blue is something I discovered when I made a lovely lilac shirt and it looked AWFUL on me, so I put a black extension around the collar when I realized the armpits were too high and drivng me nutz anyways, and it solved the "dear gods, are you sick?" issue. It's about the only way I can get away with any pastel colours. I hope you find some solutions to the lobster breakage issues so you can enjoy the fruits of your labours, you put way too much time into this ludicrously wonderful endeavour not to wear the crap out of it!!
Same!! Gotta do something about those pesky pastels! Thanks for watching!
That’s so fun that your friend did the Seagull! I have made this dress as well (same - when I found the dress plate, I also said I needed this in my life!). I then made my husband a Victorian Fisherman - or Victorian Butter as people kept asking - a completely yellow, Victorian suit, with a lobster net umbrella 🦞 🧈 🌂 👗. We wore them to Rhode Island Comic Con and had a real blast!
YESSS!!! Love it! Victorian butter is the most amazing accidental costume 🤣
🦞🦞🦞
Yay, thanks for the lobbies! 😁
Such dedication to getting the concept realised. I salute you! 🦞
Dedication is a much nicer term than "stubborn" 🤣🤣 Thank you so much!
🦞🦞🦞🦞
Whoohoo, thanks for the lobsters!!
Cute lobsters! By the way, that bright red gorgeous dress looks fantastic on you!🦞
Thank you! New dress, I just finished dyeing it!
EPIC!!!!! A++++++. I adore this gown!!
Thank you!!!! 🧡
It's recommended to sit on the toilet backwards (ie facing the wall/cistern) when wearing a bridal gown - I think this would help for this gown too because all the volume is at the back but the front skirt is relatively modest. What a project!!
It's an interesting tip. Not sure it'd be any easier, since even though there is more fabric in back, there are more lobsters in front, and the lobsters were the issue. I'd have to try it 🤔
Great job🦞 you even won a contest! I think it’s a fun dress even without the paper lobsters. 🦞 congratulations! My favorite is the felted lobster 🦞 and hat!
Thank you so much! Aren't the felted guys so CUTE? 😍
Bigger brush........
Bigger brush = less precision = messier results.
When I got the notification, I was like "Oh, a Lobster Tail bustle support with a gown on top of it." Then I was like "Oh, Actual Lobsters on a Dress? Hells yeah!"
HAH! Love it! 🤣

Thank you!!! Me, too 😬
Lobster 🦞 Love 💕 & Like 👍
Yaaaaay thank you!
If you ever think about doing paper-mache for a garment again, you may want to consider spun cotton instead. Basically, you use cotton batting instead of paper. Then paint with fabric paint (which can be a medium mixed with acrylic paints). It will be lighter and more durable.
I forgot to say that I adore how it turned out. Beautifully done!
I'll check that out next time!
🦞
Whoohoo, thank you for the lobster!!
In the future when you are block printing grab a brayer. They are not very expensive and will solve 90%+ of your issues with negative space and uneven ink distribution. Great job on the dress. It's wonderfully ridiculous in all the best ways.❤
Thank you!!! I have a brayer, and tried to use it for this project, but I didn't find that it distributed the paint all that well.
I imagine needle felted lobsters would hold up better, but would be just as much of a PITA to make...
Oh yeah. And expensive, and like 3 times as heavy. It did cross my mind 😆
I have been spending the past few months dreaming of lobster dresses. Last night I was googling inspiration. Wondering how would I achieve this without buying all the lobster. Only to open up UA-cam to find this video! The answer to my weird lobster 🦞 dreams! You are so incredibly brilliant!!!
Wow, what are the odds! Love it! 😃
my best friend is a furry orange 🦀. because he lurves me, he hired a furry red 🦞as our personal (crustaceanal?) assistant. and i'm happy to report that all of us happy clicky pinchy critters approve of your delightful 🦞gown. i especially love the felted li'l guys--i want to hug them so badly!!!!!
