I make costumes for live theatre. I needed to take measurements. Even though we were but few in the room we did have others around. I took the measurements and wrote them on my form. Several of the actors, male and female, thanked me for not speaking them out loud. I won't even show the actor what they are in case they have a body image issue.
I do usually avoid pants like the plague because of some of the same issues you had and I feel less terrified of them now. The crossbow helped too 😆🧟♀
I went down this path recently and made mock up one, and suffered the split buttocks, not enough room to bend and touch my toes in non stretch fabric. So I trawled the internet for a fitting technique that doesn't require a fitting buddy. Top down, inside out fitting method, you need 2 mirrors or a phone/tablet to see your own backside. It helped my sanity a lot! And saves on mock ups. I made myself a pair of pants for work, sill needs more space for the butt, but it works within reason and I will continue on sewing, try try again till I get a master pattern that fits! Fight on and conquer those trousers! Thank you for sharing :D
Watch the zipper placement. If the zipper is placed so that it doesn't open far enough, you will over time pull out zipper teeth. I had a pattern for a pair of jeans which had this problem.
Second time I'm watching this and I've decided... You must have magic because this is amazing! The changes you made looked easy and they were SO effective. I'm working a pair of trousers next week (after I get my materials in the mail). I'm going to attempt the Magic Pants by Ann Tilly patterns. WISH ME LUCK! 🤞🤞
I had hoped when I saw the survey that the next video would be the "winning" fear. Why? Because I'm in the process of drafting, fitting, and hand-sewing a pair of drop-canvas drawstring trousers, and this is a big help in boosting confidence! 😂❤❤❤
Making my trousers block was SUCH an annoying process, but it’s one I’m glad I did! Or if someone’s using a pattern and has gone through the hassle of fitting it really well, if they save the foundation (the waist/ hips/ crotch curve/ upper thigh) they can reuse that and lay it over other trouser patterns. Plus your tip about using photos is so good. I incorporated it at mock-up…three? of my trouser block mock-up, and it really helped move the process along much more quickly!
Yes!! This is what I plan to do with these--use them as a block! It's a great thing to have! Glad to hear some other folks using the photo technique! 😊
Thank you for this! All of my clothes are second-hand and cast-offs, so I'll probably never make a pair of trousers but all of your videos contain wonderful and useful sewing information. 🧡💙
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Late 17th century pants - yes : mid 17th century petticoat breeches - no!! ☺ 🧡 Though I would actually like to see you make a pair.
You did a great job of explaining the wrinkles. Funny I made things for the kids and now my grandson but rarely make them for myself. Hence the poor fit in almost everything I own.
This is quite literally the Palmer and Pletsch and Cashmerette books in video form. Brava, darling! This is VERY helpful. Like you, I have an interesting time fitting ANYTHING. Recently made a working mock-up of S9792 (which had to be sized up) and though it’s deffo comfy and wearable, but still needs work in some areas. Next up is a sized-up pair of PJ pants which have POCKETS. Holler if you ever want a transatlantic zoom through some of my fitting books. PS this is GENIUS.
I added in a pocket on trousers with a side closure on one occasion, but what I came up with was a pretty janky solution where I essentially enlarged the placket facings and sewed two edges of them together into a pocket. But the contents of the pocket are not very secure when you have to open the hooks (you know, every time you use the bathroom 🤦♀) so I'm not sure I'd recommend it lol
OK! So how you put a pocket into a side closure! Instead of sewing the back portion of the pocket onto the back half of the pants, you sew it onto a placket, which can then act as the new "side seam" for sewing on zipper (very closely to the edge so it's not noticeable), or fold that placket under into a facing and then sew on hook & eyes / snaps.
5:13 I appreciate your point here in not commenting on the issues of you (or others) re. size/shape in the comment field. I do have fit issues whey I sow, but I find it strange that you use the word “suffer” when talking about fit issues; I have problems with fitting a piece of clothing neatly when sowing - but that does not necessarily equate to me “suffering” from the fit issue. (Or is this just me not getting the finer points of english as it is not my primary language? 😅)
Using the word "suffer" in this context is sort of a more dramatic version of the word "struggle," if that makes sense? 🤔 Like, if you're someone who runs into fit issues a lot, you may "struggle (or suffer) with fit issues." Idiomatic usage and probably not one you'll come across often!
This is really helpful! I have a pair of trousers to make in linen denim (yes you read that right) and I'm a little nervous because the fabric has zero stretch, so the fit is going to have to be exact. I am planning to make a mockup in a sturdy regular white linen - maybe I'll dye it purple first so that if the mockup works, it'll be in a color I like??
Yay, I'm glad you found it so! Totally voting for making it purple! Quick warning, because this LITERALLY just happened to me this week--make sure you give yourself a little extra room in your final pair, because regular linen will have some give. Otherwise you'll have to rip out your finished pants and redo...😤 Also your theme song is officially Start Wearing Purple. You're welcome.
Trousers are definitely on my to-do list but I think since I have cargo pants that fit well enough, I'm going to start by tracing them, I think anything done with my waist measurement will end badly. I already know I need negative 2" ease if I want my pants to stay up, even though my waist measurement is 5" bigger than my hip measurement, my pants (and any skirts with weight to them) still slide down off my hips if I don't make things 2" tighter.... One thing I'm realizing helps with keeping stuff from slipping off is a curved waistband, that way it's got a tendency to ride up to counter gravity pulling things down. I even modified one pair I've been wearing for years (that I've been hiking up for years to avoid the dreaded plumber's butt equivalent) by taking two little 1/4" darts into the top of the waistband that are done by the end of the waistband. I don't get a gap at the top like you were having, just not enough to hold the dang things up! Thanks for showing how to fix fit issues! ...also how did it take me this long to realize you're a fellow lefty? Usually I'm right on top of that.
i don't know what it is with me but for some reason when i'm making a project i simply can't watch anything related to that project, and i've been trying to make these pants for months now. so i'll have to come back to this video when i've made them!
@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming i still didn't finish my project x_x but i knew this video would be super helpful and i'm glad i watched it! i'm ready to tackle my own pants now. thank you Jacki!
hang on, hang on. you're using a table😮😮!?! where is floor troll Jacki and what have you done with her😂? so not fair, I was happily munching away on a cranberry orange cookie, and spat it out all over my tablet screen. it's not sitting next to me, because I just can't keep eating it! you can also do thigh adjustments on the outer seams too, which I what I have to do for fitted trousers. also, curved waistbands! bloody lifesaver if you have a sloped spine. I'm afraid I can't link any videos in YT. can I dm. you them?
I have scoliosis Bad. It is like I am two people who mostly meet in the middle (which is not remotely plum) I am wondering where to start with pants. Does it make sense to figure out which half of me is bigger and double it for the size then adjust down

maybe try looking for videos about late Victorian or Edwardian walking skirts since they sometimes have placket-adjacent pockets?
