I talk about Pathfinder. A lot. This channel is where I talk about some of my favorite aspects of Pathfinder: the gods, NPCs, and factions of Golarion. The videos here serve as a point of education and inspiration for players and GMs who want to incorporate these elements of the Pathfinder RPG into their characters and campaigns.

Up next for this series is the first half of my examination of the Sin of Wrath.
The Runelords of Wrath ruled over the nation of Bakrakhan, the most war-like of the seven Thassilonian member kingdoms. The Runelords of wrath were well-known as demon-binders, and most of them openly made deals with the denizens of the Outer Rifts.
The last and mightiest of the Runelords of Wrath, Alaznist, rose to power after sacrificing her whole family to the Qlippoth Lord Yamasoth, but I'll be digging more into her rule tomorrow.

Pathfinder People - Abrogail Thrune
im so thankful for this videos , the runelords are the thing i love the most from pathfinder , everything about them is always so interesting and incredible to me :)
Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying them!
No, you can't fix Alaznist, people have tried
Lol. But... What if I could?
Inverted giant as a template similar to Cryptids would be an awesome idea.
Totally agree. They have so much potential as villains in a New Thassilon campaign.
Geb and Hei Feng in a "most divorced man in the universe" competition
i think the conceptually most interesting (even if they'd never actually do it because it wouldn't be any fun to play/would make a lot of previous whispering tyrant content just seem dumb) would be he successfully becomes a God through the power of the starstone and is then immediately struck with how much he just reduced his own agency like he's fucking jafar from Aladdin hope ya like granting some clown 1st level Bane and centuries of fan discussion of "why doesn't tar-baphon intervene in X?", idiot even more ridiculous and unlikely but would be doubly funny if he then got jumped by the main pantheon of the setting like he's rovagug 2.0
I really like these ideas. Give him what he wants, then let him realize he's doomed himself to an eternity of boredom.
With Tar Barphon's history of outwitting Aroden and using Aroden's divinity to his own benefit, I think it likely Tar Barphon crafted a spell which resulted in Aroden's death.
That's certainly an interesting theory, and I don't doubt that TB could probably pull it off. If I were to run with this idea, however, I would suggest that maybe TB didn't use a spell to kill Aroden, but rather set into motion a series of events (magical and mundane) that led to Aroden's death. The only reason I say this is because the sheer power gap between Aroden and TB is so huge that I doubt TB could actually muster the raw power necessary to outright kill him. Again, not disagreeing, just offering my 2 cents.
God's almighty, she's insane
Oh look, its Alderpash. I remember freeing him in Wotr.
hehehe. I "Released" him when i destroyed his phylactery.
So out of curiosity since I've tinkered with thassilonian characters some, I was wandering if you noticed any particular kinds names that thassilonian names pull from. I see some greek and roman names, but others i haven't placed, like names (mainly from the Runelords themselves since i don't have a nice list of all named thassilonian characters.) Does seem like its divided by region. Haven't managed to figure out shalast or haruka yet. Kaer Maga was a place named by a greed runelord, and Kaer is a welsh word, but names of people in shalast don't seem to be welsh inspired. Maybe I'm overthinking things and paizo just went with names they thought sounded neat, but it feels like theres at least some consistency in name in each region that it make me very curious, and wondered if you had spotted or noticed where they seem to be drawing names from that I am missing.
I think there's a little of column A and a little of column B. It's important to remember that the Thassilonian lore was established over a 20-year period, not all at once. Names chosen early on for Rise of the Runelords (Karzoug, Xin, Kaer Maga, Shalast) likely would have been made up following a more "whatever sounds cool" philosophy. Later on, when Pathfinder was a more established setting, the writers were more experienced, and more thought could be put into fleshing things out, a more logical approach which intentionally drew from real-world places and cultures likely took over. This could lead to greater trends in names.
These Sin-Mas videos are amazing. I'm so excited for Enchantment (/Lust) and Illusion (/Pride).
Pride ended up being my favorite script in this series. Hope it lives up to expectations!
The Czech Legion wasn't confused. Their path back to Europe was blocked by enemy forces. They had no choice but to flee East. Making them sound like hapless buffoons diminishes their courage, the adversities they faced and their actual history.
I'll admit I mis-remembered this story as I was writing this script. My bad.
So....an evil race which engaged in slavery, an evil practice, was too much? That is stupid. The game has devils and gods which advocate assassination and wholesale murder, but portraying slavery as an evil practice was too much? Instead, Droskar is an evil capitalist who takes advantage of his workers? What capitalist doesn't take advantage of workers? Jeez, Paizo, pathetic.
So, play them differently at your table if it bothers you so much. Personally, I like the explicitly pyramid-scheme flavored evil that Droskar represents. It makes him and the Duergar stand out.
@Podfinder Sorry that I triggered you. I'll unsubscribe so my criticisms of Paizo no longer upset you.
To quote (and paraphrase) Thordak from D&D PHB PSAs, "Elves cause cancer," and, 'I'm not racist, I hate elves.'
Pathfinder elves are substantially cooler than D&D elves, though. The fact that they are aliens from the pathfinder-equivalent of Venus is fun and interesting, and the elves outside of Avistan range from demon hunters, to mask-carving meditators, to samurai-poets.
Arazni's story was the most tragic in old PF. I was pleased when PF deemed to redeem her. He being Evil does not change this. She has become a force for good by using evil against Evil.
She really is a fantastic character. I'm really excited for what the future of PF has in store for her.
My friends and I are obsessed Kaer Maga, gotta be one of the most fascinating places on all of Golarion
It really is so cool. I'm glad it has gotten so much attention (relative to other cities in the setting) over the years.
I know that the Runelords are relatively evil, but Karzoug is so cool to me because he built himself up from literally nothing
He manages to be both despicable and compelling.
That's what really makes me Love Rise of the Runelords, even though as the first AP it has a few issues @@Podfinder
I dont get it. Fleshwarping is primarily trasmutation isnt it? How did he lose to the Runelord of Wrath in what is supposed to be his area of expertise?
Excellent question. I suspect part of it was due to just how many topics Karzoug was pursuing at any given time. He spread himself fairly thin. Also, I'll discuss this over the next two episodes, but Alaznist had some major outside help.
Haphrama made some pretty great spells I must say
How does one become a lich trasmuter? Doesnt one need to be a master necromancer to become a lich?
Just need to be a decently powerful spellcaster with sufficient crafting skills. That goes for 1e or 2e.
You need to be an expert academic with a knowledge of necromancy. Being a master necromancer (to the exclusion of other forms of magic) isn't necessary.
Is there any mention of inflation with any of the runelords of greed? All of this X material to gold would certainly bring its value down. Is this the reason high level magic items cost 50 thousand gold? Because some old farts 10k years ago decide they needed a golden person wielding a golden sword walking a golden road to the golden capital?
I haven't found any mention of inflation specifically. There was a trend of economic hardship later in the Thassilonian period, but that involved many factors, not just inflation.
I'm excited for Karzoug, although I'm a little biased because of the Karzoug: A Fluke of Fate Pathfinder Infinites novel
I haven't read that. Is it any good?
@Podfinder It's a fantastic read, and fun characterization of Karzoug!
The info on spells crafted by haphrama was great. my players in rise right now use several spells he made and thy just got to end of book 4 so perfect time to lore dump them!!! Thanks!!!!
There are so many neat little lore treasures about Thassilon that can really add depth to a campaign. It's been a blast to put them all in one place. Glad it worked out so well!
Please note that the 8 schools predate 3.0, and existed in ADND 2e
Very true. I didn't mean to imply that they were invented for 3E, only that the Pathfinder implementation predated Pathfinder as a system.
I like that the rune looks like a hand holding a gem.
It's one of those nice little touches, isn't it?
I'm running a highly homebrewed Varisia Sandbox and this series is a goldmine! Thank you for your hard work, I know there is so much Runelord content to look into
The spellwell in the book looks confusing based on its description. If the rings are supposed to be able to rotate, why do they spiral inward? I'd expect something like skyrims claw puzzles. Is it a design error?!
That... Is an excellent question. I am currently away from my reference books for the next week, but I will check and get back to you. It's possible the art and the description do not match (that happens somewhat often), but it's also possible that I misinterpreted how the spellwells functions.
I'm starting to GM my first game of Rise of the Runelords next week and this is incredibly useful!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy RotRL! My wife ran it for me as a duet campaign, and it was fantastic! Stick around for the next two videos in this series. They should help you out a lot.
Woot woot!! Day three of sinmas! I’m so excited to dig into each of the Runelords coming up!
Wait a minute! Are you saying that the Runelords of Greed fashioned a sort of Opportunistic Greed Licensure (or "OGL" for short) that they could use to profit from other creative spellcasters, to only then twist in a blatant attempt to steal from the very people that they had profited from? How could such terrible wizards, presumably living near the coast, have accomplished such a dastardly feat? Hopefully an Organized Resistance Community (or ORC) rises to defeat them! I eagerly await the next part of this series to learn more! Also, loving this series! Lots or fun!
Glad you're enjoying it! And yes, the OGL was among the most insidious of artifacts created by the Runelords of Greed.
Day 3: The Lust Runelords have invented the Giantess Fetish
Day three of sinmas, lats go algorithm!
Yay!
Love this channel. Hope it gets the subscribers you deserve.
Thanks very much!
While its an incredibly small niche, IF you want to play a Giant who worships Lissala, Roll for Combat has a Giant Ancestry as part of their Year of Legends line of pdfs, and you could 100% pair that with the Runesmith class that Paizo is currently playtesting! To the exactly one person on the planet that this somehow helps... you're welcome!
I've always wished Paizo would put out an official giant ancestry, but Roll for Combat consistently does great work!
there is an official-from-paizo playable stone giant...... in starfinder everything else about it besides, I've always admired that that game just doesn't care and lets you play as nearly anything at this point
@@obamabiden I agree! Starfinder is not afraid to offer you crazy options! I really hope they maintain a similar mentality in 2e!
That is a really good thought on how her and some other dieties are such that clerics arent able to directly engage their dieties domain or at least not as greatly. This kind of introduces a nieche use of a witch. They are more directly guided by the patron/diety than a wizard or a druid if more nature theme but able to go into different spell domains than a cleric. She would be an awesome inscribed one patron putting runes on your familiar to learn and translate to attempt to know her wants. But they also have the ability of learning more spells independently to show initiative. (Back when she was active of course) Love your stuff.
Thanks so much! I totally agree, the inscribed one witch is a perfect choice for a follower of Lissala. And if you were to run a campaign set in ancient Thassilon, they could transition to the Senechal archetype after Earthfall. Could make for a great character arc.
In Lost Omens: Divine Mysteries she is have two versions her old Azlanti version and her more "modern" version. People can see the differences in the free pdf from Paizo in the post "Chronicles of the Divine".
I've started reading my Divine Mysteries book now that this project is over. I came across her entry and I just rolled my eyes because of course major lore updates would be published after I finished things up. Oh well. Addendum videos exist for a reason.
@@PodfinderMy favourite detail from that book is the question of who Arazni's new herald is.
@@Podfinder I would love to see a an update video with the Gods and NPCs you have done.
@stillyourgoth5841 I've got one penciled in for 2025.
New information came out of Lissala too in Divine Mysteries. Her Edicts have changed significantly and now its "Gather and share knowledge freely, honor your duty when your word is given, respect and carry out the law" And her Anathema are "Conceal and keep information secret, break an oath, subvert authority" Her domains have changed aswell to "Ambition, duty, fate, knowledge" Her divine font is now harm or heal and sanctification is holy or unholy. So yeah, she's changed quite alot as a deity to follow.
Unfortunately, all this was published after I was finishing up this series. I am planning an addendum in the future to reflect the recent canon updates from War of Immortals, Divine Mysteries, and other books like Seven Dooms for Sandpoint.
Her edicts are literally how i live my life! I dig it
The vignette at the start of chapter 2 of War of Immortals depicts a group of Lissalan pilgrims from ancient Thassilon, "seekers of the seven virtues" who are trying to "restore [Lissala] to the wisdom and virtue of her old ways, which she has been made, tragically, to forget." Whether this means that the Runelords "made" Lissala neglect her more benign aspect through some magic, or the speaker in the story is just using poetic language to describe Lissala's change of heart as part of her becoming Thassilon's patron deity, isn't clear. I think it's likely that Paizo is foreshadowing a partial rehabilitation of Lisalla for the introduction of the Runesmith class, and the "Temple of the Seven Wings" referenced in that story may appear in that book or an upcoming adventure.
All good information for a future addendum video! I agree that it seems like Lissala is due for an update from Paizo in upcoming publications.
I love you man
Lissala: The Patron Goddess of Your Boomer Parents
Consider an addendum covering SF² sources. It might be a Short if under three minutes.
Her old self's views on hard work and ernest effort might have had her in good standing with the dwarves if they found out about her. but alas, she wad gone before the dwarves finished the quest for the sky.
That would be an interesting interaction.
Love your work. Both extensive and compact. I'm finally learning all those things I wondered about Golarion. Thank ou so much!
Let's not worry about her being the chief deity of the Azlanti Star Empire in Starfinder and promoted to the core 20 deities of SF2e. That's probably totally okay!
Guess She left Golarion to focus on the Azlanti Star Empire.
Definitely doesn't bode poorly for SF2E.
He mentioned she may have departed for the stars. Further, this series is about Thassilon and the Runelords so this video is not a comprehensive video of Lissala but only her ancient history and her relationship to both. So, yeah, there is no reason to worry about her and SF. It is totally okay!
Love this video and reminded me of something I heard of a long time ago that there use to be two more sins that were merged into the seven, vainglory and despair. From my understanding vainglory is excessive vanity or mega pride but I feel that despair fits SO WELL with divination. Looking into the future and seeing all the bad coming. And while not an opposite I see self control as an old virtue which fits for divination not being studied. If you practice self control you avoid going too deep into divination due to the risks but if you go with the opposite of self control you have no control to stop you from constantly looking into the future entering a state of despair. Both extremes would encourage divination to be "lost" as a major like the 8th virtue/sin lost. But that would be reaching to explain plot hole. Your videos just make me want to look and think.
These sound like great ideas for a homebrew campaign! Love the despair idea in particular!
Xin reaching to connect the schools of magic to the virtues of rule reminds me of how Isaac Newton was really into the mystical & religious significance of the number seven, as a result was very insistent that there were seven colors of the rainbow, and that's why indigo is considered a color of the rainbow.
So "Seven Dooms of Sandpoint" reveals in some minor background details that someone was trying to make Divination a proper school of sin magic. They wanted to be called the "Runelord of Vainglory," but, uh, she had bad timing. She reached a runelord's magical power a few months before Earthfall and then got crippled by her visions of the coming apocalypse. Whoops. It's unclear if she made a runewell, but it's most likely she was just overwhelmed with terror by watching her own death on repeat.
This is great to know! I haven't had a chance to dig into Seven Dooms yet, so it looks like I've got an addendum video to make for this series in the future.
Which is hilarious because Eastern Orthodox Christianity has an actual eighth sin: DESPAIR
On the first day of sin-mas the runelords gave to me: An e‐ternal o‐li‐gar‐chy!
Its finally here! Merry Sin-mass and Happy Horrordays to everyone!
