Red Light Therapy: Do Home Devices Work?
A lot of people could have 20 minutes a day of sunrise light even without leaving their homes... in that case could we use sunlight instead of Led light for therapy?
If you’re able to get completely naked for 20 minutes each day, then yes, you would likely see less benefit compared to others using red light therapy, who aren’t able to be outside in this manner every day.
I have peripheral Neuropathy. How can I find how to use red light therapy
@@ladelledaly2335 I’ve got a video on neuropathy which discusses this in more detail. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/he0GipUUDIw/v-deo.htmlsi=rbCvCIyJZP6Tk8Oy The session times with the device discussed in the video is 8-minutes per area, 6-8 inches away from the device. If you have any other questions, just let me know 🙌🏼
Thanks for posting this. Which studies are you referencing that show 100mW/cm^2 as the irradiance to be used for PBM? Can you provide a citation?
This is based on reversing the "dosage" (J/cm2) from studies, which vary across benefits. Skin benefits, for example, can be seen with ~9 J/cm2 (1), whereas sleep improvement is achieved with 30 J/cm2 (2). (1) www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3926176/ (2) pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23182016/ Some benefits go as high as 60+ J/cm2, too. If we work back from 100 mW/cm2 light intensity, this means 6 J/cm2 per minute. This gives the versatility to do lower and higher dose benefits within a 2-10 minute range.
So if I spent a time outside gardening on a sunny day, then should I skip red light therapy that day?
@@jackiet1915 not necessarily. The areas covered by clothes won’t be getting enough light, so you can still target these areas. If you know that you’ll be spending a lot of time outside that day, it’s also a good idea to do red light therapy in the morning as it helps protect your skin from UV damage later. You can find out more about this in this video: ua-cam.com/video/OeiaNQIv_fs/v-deo.html
I tried using a red cloth but your suggestion of a balloon works better i think
that's a cool idea
Would it be possible to find out what specific diagnosis the doctor gave pertaining to his eyes/sight & what his routine was? I would really appreciate it! So happy for him, I want to thank him/you for any information you’re willing to provide.
How about too much? better than too little?
@@laughingoutloud3713 this video covers the effects of “too much” red light therapy”: ua-cam.com/video/8EnUBAPW0RM/v-deo.htmlsi=EabhHYxYcNhhutBb
What if you are treating multiple areas of concern e.g. hair growth, muscle soreness, surgical recovery etc.? Can I mix sessions in one day (e.g. 8 minutes on the head, 8 minutes on the back etc)? Thanks!
@@almach5 great question! Yes, all protocols that are based on clinical studies give the time “per area”, so you can repeat the times in multiple sessions.
Is this another red light commercial?
I live in Washington State where 80% of the year is spent in darkness and rain lol I use it every day for 10-15 mins.
Life hack 😎
I experienced overdosed before. I find that 4-8 mins a day is more than enough for me if I do it daily.
@@VansLegacy yes, with a high quality device you can definitely get benefits with that time frame. Out of interest, did you have any adverse reactions to overdosing, or you just find better results in a shorter time frame?
@@mychondria, I think I was having adverse effects as it drops your blood sugar if used too much and if you do not consume enough calories. In my research, it boosts your mitochondria function (the more potent the machine, the more it'll do this), so excessive red light can be damaging if you're not nourishing your body with adequate nutrients. I was also overdoing everything on top of red light: taking Methylene Blue (which makes you more sensitive to red light/reaps more benefit from it for less time used) and following an animal-based/bioenergetic diet.
@@VansLegacy that’s very interesting. Even the “overdosing” mechanism isn’t certain in the literature, but they also believe it could be from too much antioxidants:free radicals. Interestingly, Methelyne blue is meant to help this as it provides more free radicals, which is why the combination is so powerful.
Is there also a systemic benefit when focusing the light on a specific area? How far do benefits extend, if so?
Great question! And yes, there is systemic effects with red light therapy. In some cases, we’ve even seen the greatest repair happening the furthest from the site of application: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19708798/ Of course, the human body is all connected, so if you’re assisting with inflammation and repair in one area, it leaves more resources for the body to use elsewhere 🙌🏼
A tanned person might look healthier than someone with a pale skin, as the latter could spend their entire day inside due to some disease. However, this is just a correlation: tanning is not the thing that makes one healthier. In fact, tanning is a stress response by the skin after skin damage (“7 Common Tanning and Sun Exposure Myths, Busted”, Healthline).
You may find this published study interesting: Title: Avoidance of sun exposure as a risk factor for major causes of death pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26992108/
@@mychondria definitely interesting. I have some points on it though: - the study shows a positive association between avoiding the sun and cardiovascular death + noncancer death. However, as the authors mention in the discussion, this just an association. They say it is not possible for them to distinguish between active sun exposure and a healthy lifestyle. The better life expectancy could for example be attributed to simply exercising more and coincidentally getting more sun exposure. - I am not arguing that sun exposure should be avoided completely, but that tanning is a sign of the body that there is DNA damage in the skin which is causally linked to skin cancer and other issues (although its less bad than burning red). - Sun exposure can help with vitamin d deficiency, but one can also just take a vitamin d supplement.
Excellent post !

the issue with the RA optic is that they don't have the bigger sizes that can fit over your prescription glasses so you are forced to buy the ones that have prescription lenses in them. Which means more money and with that kind of a cost you can just go to your local eye glass store and have them make your eyeglass lenses with blue light safe coding.
That could be an option. Do you know if the eye store tests these lenses? I know most eye specialists are only concerned with blocking some blue light, just for eye protection. The deep orange/red tint would be hard to find.

Thank you. Your videos are always so helpful.
You are so welcome :)
Avoiding blue night at night is crucial indeed!! I used to sleep great until my hormones started changing. I still fall asleep fast and sleep great but only for 5-6 hours, and I think it’s because I’m probably in perimenopause, haha. I just started placenta glandular to see if it’ll help up my progesterone so I can sleep better. We’ll see!
Thanks for sharing! What is your sleep environment like? You may find you can sleep longer if your room is darker, and a bit cooler (18-21 degrees Celsius)
@@mychondria I appreciate your replying! I sleep with it as cool as I can without it being cold, and for the most part, it is very dark. I have all lights covered from gadgets, and there is a small bit of light coming from my windows, but it’s a big bay window that I would not be able to put blackout curtains up on, as I have furniture in the way. However, I used to easily sleep eight hours, and this is a new occurrence. Thank you again! ☺️
@@PeaceIsYeshua thanks for sharing. It sounds like you’re doing everything right! Hopefully things shift back into place soon
@@mychondria Thank you so much!! I hope so! 😊☺️
Thanks for this video! Does the distance between my face and the device matter if I’m not using eye protection but just closing my eyes?
I used the morning sunrise and the evening sunset to heal my vision. Noone believes me but if they watched your clip, they might. It's THIS what you're saying that healed my eyes. A disciplined process to it though. Thank you for all the education.
How does this work? Can it make my vision better?
Absolutely! The eyes are like muscles, and healthy light is the exercise needed to strengthen them.
The type of light from morning and evening sunlight has a lot of red light, which has been shown to be beneficial for your eyes. We cover this in a video (with a study involving a deep red light to improve eye sight) below: ua-cam.com/video/1WBxZ8KSFOw/v-deo.htmlsi=JXH3bLD_ENAeK5J7
How are you measuring the optical power or irradiance? Are those solar power meter measurements?
measured with the AuLight Professional Irradiance Meter (not a solar meter)
My device says not longer than a 20 minute session. So if I do my face for 20 minutes then could I do my ankle for 20 minutes or if I hit my limit with the 20 minute face session.
@@27kjh which device are you using? The protocol should be “per surface area”
@@mychondria thanks for your reply. I certainly didn’t expect it that soon. I have the Mito pro 300. So I understand by your reply I can do each body part” surface area” up to the maximum time.
@@27kjh yes, I just had a look at the specs, and it does make sense that it’s the total time per surface area 👍🏼

Hi, how can i treat the head with a panel? If I put the panel in front of my face is It good or on a bed and the panel in the back part of the head? Thx a lot
@@LedEyeStrain it is better if you can aim it directly at the area where there is hair loss. You can use a panel in a similar fashion to how I had the device at the 0:07 (7 second) mark in this video. If it’s a larger panel, then place it on its side on the ground and lie next to it, with your head facing the panel. Let me know if there’s anything else I can answer for you 👍🏼

@@truthseeker2248 calories can be a factor, although “calories in vs. calories out” doesn’t take into account metabolic or hormonal changes. We choose to prioritize food quality over total calories
Bro you can’t say stuff like deeper or performed better. Those terms mean nothing when talking about scientific devices. Even just saying red light isn’t enough. You need to talk about wavelengths of red light because different wavelengths have very different effects.
That’s why the channel has more than one video 👍🏼

If I put a plastic filter sheet over a regular bulb. Will if give any benefits? I had an LED red-light therapy bulb but I got rid of it because you have to wear goggles to protect your eyes. I want something cheap and easy I can leave on while I'm watching movies.
Plastic filters may not remove all the blue/green light. If you’re looking for a cheap source of red light for evening time, I personally use little “on camera lights” which have the RGB function. You can use these on their red mode, and they’re pretty inexpensive ~$30.
See if you can find the “Ulanzi” mini light in your Amazon feed.
how often should you get the light therapy and for how ling means 3 times a week 20 minutes a sessions. So what is your recommendation?
The length of the session will depend on the device's light intensity. Which device are you using? For frequency, daily sessions is best.
you cant be serious?
@@welfareleech1525 why do you say that?
I feel like is better to use in the morning. Especially when shining red light close to the face. If doing it at night, body might think it is morning since strong red light energy emit to the body and may confuse the internal clock? Even not shining red light closer to face, let’s say shining to ankle, but our cell have internal clock too (that’s what I heard), so might still confuse the body? Just my guess.
@@SoulEscalator that’s a great question, and worthy of some future video content 🙌🏼 While we have to be careful with other wavelengths of light (especially blue/green), the human body has evolved with some “sleep immunity” to red and infrared. At night, it would be possible for us to be exposed to these wavelengths, either by a fire, or even general heat (which is infrared light). There’s also been clinical studies where they used red light therapy in the evening, and see significant increases in melatonin (sleep hormone). You can see this here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3499892/ With that said, regardless of the color, some people find a bright light aimed at their face quite “mentally stimulating”, so I always say don’t aim at your face within an hour of the time you plan on going to sleep.

thank you dearheart
I’m like watching this in the first hour of waking up 😢
I can definitely vouch for the morning sessions of red light for eye health. The first thing I noticed is how vivid the color of flowers were after starting it.
I stack books and put my panel on the sides of the edges of the books and stick my feet under the panel and it has helped a lot.
That's a great way to do it 😎
Oral (fast dissolve) melatonin is effective for me… Is that overkill? I’ve been doing red light therapy in the gym in the morning 10 minutes- 8 full panels, 4 on each wall, and I stand between the two walls…About 2 hours after I use it I do feel I need another cup of coffee…
I'm not a fan of melatonin supplementation, as it's not something you can be precise with, and your body's melatonin requirements change every day. There's a great short video on this here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsgWJgeq-uaGM?si=W2QdcC9ejY1bTzv8
i wonder if you have any parkinson people that have success with this, my wife is always complaining about her feet going numb when meds wear off. same thing with the stomach always cramping and tight. i saw a company symbyx has a laser for that. do you know anyone that it has helped with advanced parkinson?
I use RLT 5-6 days a week 10 minutes for my face and I do not use goggles . I close my eyes only and stay at a distance of 9-12 inches infront of the panel and the irradiance of 25%. Would it be safe for my eyes?
Yes, provided you aren't staring into the device's light.
Great video thanks for clarifying! Personally, I use the Hooga 300 stand led panel. I do 10 overall for my face/front hairline. 6 mins just on Red Light then for the other 4 turn on the Near Infrared Light. Close my eyes throughout no googles. Distance around 8 inches away and ive had no issues been doing this for a long time now.
so .... peripheral ? ow close and how long... yo never really got to the exact way to expose eyes.
Anywhere from 10 inches and on is good. You can see a full video about red light therapy and eye health here: ua-cam.com/video/1WBxZ8KSFOw/v-deo.htmlsi=OMNxmJz04HW2NDvy
I have a red light panel. It’s delivered with goggles. I have under eye bags and wamt to get rid of those or at least decrease them. The goggles cover the whole eye area, including under eyes. So to wear them, doesn’t improve the under eye bags. My question is, can I just ignore wearing the goggles, so the red light is able to treat the under eye bags? Your advice is very appreciated. Thanks!
I wondering the same! But for fine lines and wrinkles
Yes, you can leave out the goggles and simply close your eyes. I've done a video on these goggles and red light therapy, which you will find interesting: ua-cam.com/video/xyJy4e8aacE/v-deo.html&pp=ygUZbXljaG9uZHJpYSBleWUgcHJvdGVjdGlvbg%3D%3D
I have been using a red lamp device near my desk each morning and sometimes while I read at night. I don't have it close enough to cause too much heat. Is this cheaper lamp device beneficial or is it of only a heat benefit to muscles, etc. ?
More likely a benefit for muscles, and you will want to be careful of getting to. much of this light into your eyes, as it could lead to cataract formation later in life.
@@mychondria I dont use it for eyes or look directly into it. For me it was more about benefiting the skin on my face which has some age spot/blemishing. Does the lamp have some skin benefit?
exposing yourself to sunlight does the same thing as red light therapy, correct?
To a lesser degree. Sunlight involves full spectrum light, so it doesn't have the same concentration of the "mitochondrial stimulating wavelengths". That doesn't mean sunlight is worse (because it also includes other beneficial wavelengths like UV light). I've done a video on this topic here: ua-cam.com/video/qLPXTJn52sc/v-deo.html&pp=ygUobXljaG9uZHJpYSBzdW5saWdodCB2cyByZWQgbGlnaHQgdGhlcmFweQ%3D%3D
