Thanksgiving Trail Cam Dump - Crazy Whitetail Rut
Thanksgiving Trail Cam Dump - Crazy Whitetail Rut
In this video I am sharing the highlights of our annual whitetail rut trail camera collection. We had many bucks running does this year, and it was fun to catch the action. During the peak of the rut, I was caught off guard, while a big mature buck chased a doe right past me. I quickly grabbed my phone from my pocket, and was able to catch the encounter for a grand finale.
I want to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Blessings to you and your families. -Kevin

Bushcraft in Tall Country - First Snow of Winter

Bushcraft in Tall Country - First Snow of Winter Today, fall is officially over, and winter takes hold. I know the calendar on the wall says otherwise, but today there is a winter storm warning and a bomb cyclone headed our way. I took this bushcraft trip to say goodbye to the back country, one final time. I do it every year. One last trip to reflect on the past season. I watch the shrubby vege...
Restoring a 100 Year Old Swedish Barrel Knife
Переглядів 44114 днів тому
In this video, we explore the world of Swedish barrel knives and give this century old piece a complete make over. I'm was so blown away to receive this in the mail from my friend, Shane, a West Fork brother for many years. The barrel knife is the only one I've ever seen. Shane happened upon it in a box at a swap meet, and gifted it to me. Speechless, I figured the least I could do is share thi...
Campfire Blacksmithing -- Making a Fire Poker
Переглядів 21621 день тому
This is the first time I've tried DIY blacksmithing on an open fire. With some bone dry hardwood and a nice light breeze, I had a lot of fun creating some new fire pokers for our woodstoves. The materials I used were just junk I had laying around, and I used various non-blacksmith tools. This would be easy with a modern forge and a big anvil, but the campfire and an old chunk of railroad iron g...
Building a Shaker Style Kitchen Broom from an Old Old Fence Post
Переглядів 417Місяць тому
I don't know what got into me. I found an old fence post out in the open range, and had to drag it home. I was thinking there was good wood in there, and I wanted to carve it. Well in this video, I cracked it open and made a pretty cool broom from it. For the past 12 years, broom making has been our livelihood. That, and growing food, cutting firewood, and just surviving on the homestead. This ...

Winter doesn't seem far off now. Haven't had any snow yet, but there has been ice on the water bucket just about every morning lately. Building a Traditional Shave Horse from a Tamarack Log -- Part 1 The Bench

My latest project is to build a shave horse for future wood carving projects I have planned. To keep the cost down I am building it from a tamarack log I found in the forest. I don't have an extensive wood shop, so I am using mostly hand tools. Just learning as I go, and hoping to have a functional shave horse when I get done! Spuds Firewood and Just Plain Homestead Life

Lots going on at the homestead right now. We had a late harvest season, and are just now harvesting and canning food for winter. Our garden soil set up like concrete, so I had to rig up a way to bust our potatoes out of the earth. It worked, and we had another nice pile of spuds for the pantry. If you haven't subscribed to West Fork yet, please feel welcome. Until next time, God bless and happy...

I always enjoy trail cam pics/videos and looks like a healthy population and some nice bucks!! I don't know much about whitetalils (I hunt mule deer mainly) but hope to hunt them someday. Great video Kevin and thank you for sharing all that awesome footage!!
Cracking vid mate , definitely on my wish list 👍
It's a good one!
I got one that is 26 years old handle got lose so i tryed sending it back and it got a new handle put on by the blacksmith that made it thats why the name of the smith is on there
That's good to hear. We live in a dry climate. Wet fall and spring, but baking dry in summer. All my axe handles get loose, except for the Gransfors axes. I wonder how they do that. Thank you, and take care!

Wow Kevin you got all kinda groceries running around your place! That 2am buck was a big boy for sure. Hope you fill the freezer my friend. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Yeah Shane, they would have walked right into the freezer!
The West Fork feeding station is one busy place! That's a lot of hormones running around out there throwing caution to the wind. Nice turkey flock too. That Browning takes nice vids. Hope you can get some fresh venison for the freezer. Good luck!
It was like the Dating Game there for a few days. Sure was a lot of different bucks this year. Sure gonna be a lot of fawns this spring!
got some fine specimens there. That 6x5 looks like a hoss. Is there one with a broken or is it just a stumpy tine on one side.
That stumpy buck looks like it just grew that way. We named him Drill Bit, because if he turns a certain way, he looks like a unicorn. Drill Bit walked through yesterday, but no sign of him now that the season is open!
Convex grind needs getting used to time. I have handed some of mine convex sharpened knives to my friends to do some tasks with it, and they have had a hard time even thinking those were not sharp. Well, they were razor sharp, but the people who are not used to such knifes use it under the wrong angle and slide on the convex shoulder. In axes there are different approaches to some tasks. For example chopping or in felling you say convex is not good for you. Well if used correctly convex actually pops off good chunks of chips out of the tree. Narrower blades have to have some heft and convex grind to work. That's how Swedish forest axes work. While in some other countries blade is longer and flat ground under smaller angle. They have to have small angle so yhat they can go deep enough with wider blade. They are more predictable as well. Though one would not believe hiw much work can be done with Scandinavian first axe that's is a size of a boys axe. For example my Wetterlings Firest axe can take 8 inch tree so fast that you couldn't believe considering the head size and weight. But it just simply works. It just kicks out bigger chunks. So when you want to cut, for example, under 45 degrees you actually need to hit at 50 degrees. Then it will bite in with no problems.
Looks like plenty of turkey. 🦃 Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
Very cool Kevin. There were a couple pretty nice bucks in that footage. I liked the little one antlered buck...he must have tangled with a big one. Bucks and bulls sure lose good sense when the rut is on....glad we humans aren't like that....well maybe some are. Anyway, have a very blessed Thanksgiving - we sure have a lot to be thankful for!
Happy Thanksgiving, my friend!

@WestForkWoodsman thank you for your reply.

Okay this is pretty darn cool and what a neat little knife. Great job on bringing it back to life and I like the pull tab idea. I really like the happenings at West Fork and that's a nice buck in the background!!
Howdy Dave. Having fun with the "new" knife. That buck was my son's muzzleloader harvest a few years back. I'm enjoying the memories of that hunt until he gets his own cabin. He put a lot of miles on his boots to find that one!
You have amazing "wood vision" Kevin meaning I really enjoy how you can envision and make a great camp spot with some down trees and moving stuff around. I struggle with this and from the beginning of the video I was like "what's he going to make....this is going to be good" and sure enough another great one!! Thank You!!!
Haha! I was thinking the same thing, Dave. "What am I going to make? I hope this is good!" Just getting by, my friend. I mostly was looking for a place with a lot of firewood, so I wouldn't have to go looking. It was a nice, relaxing trip, and I'm glad you came along. I hope you are doing great. Next video will be my trail cam dump, in time for Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving, my friend.
@@WestForkWoodsman Ha ha and I doubt that. I really like your style and Happy Thanksgiving to you too Kevin.. I'm always looking forward to your next video and can't wait from some trail cam content - Great Idea!!
Came back to watch this again a couple of more times. So much good stuff packed into this video. One of my favorites for sure.
Thank you, Dave. That was such a nice spot and a fun trip!

😮 I feel cold
It was warm and comfortable inside the shelter with the campfire. But cold out in the snow. Thanks for watching!
What a delightful day you had !Your dog is lovely and the location is fantastic!Thank you for sharing your experience!
Yes, Tig is a big sweetheart. She loves the woods. Thank you for coming along!
That's a beauty of a dog. Good camping.
Thank you for watching!
> 5K views in two days! I think the word is getting out and Tig's going to need a raise.
I hear you, Mo. Tig and I haven't talked numbers yet, but I'm going to up the ante. Maybe a big can of Dinty Moore Stew will appease her!
Tig is the sweetest dog & you guys have raised her right.peaceful video, thanks & happy Thanksgiving.
A happy and peaceful Thanksgiving to The Martin Family. God bless you guys.
A man and his dog sharing time outdoors with a nice fire and some lunch. Doesn’t get much better than that. Very enjoyable video Kevin.
Howdy Don. Glad you enjoyed it. Tig sez hi. Those were some good venison steaks I've kept in reserve. A guy doesn't want to run out completely, right? Hope you are doing well, my friend. Thanks for stopping by!
Good 👍
That some beautiful country ya got there to enjoy 😉
Yes it is. All covered in snow now. I feel blessed to be able to visit these woods. Thank you for watching my friend.
My dog always gets 50% of what I have. Bed, food, water, toys. No questions asked
A happy dog is a good dog! So loyal, how could you not share? Thanks for watching my friend!
Really love this, Kevin. You make it all so fascinating. Hugs to you and Sarah,😃❤️🧹
Hi Andrea! Thanks for sharing this video. Glad you liked it. I hope to make more broom videos when I have time. Hope you have a great week and a Happy Thanksgiving!
@WestForkWoodsman Nice to see your channel is getting some traction. It's such a great place to watch and breathe deep.

@@WestForkWoodsman Happy Thanksgiving to you too🦃🍂🥧💕
Enjoyed you sharing part of your day with us. That was a very interesting and unique pocket knife. Never seen one like it before.
Howdy Lonnie. That knife was a gift I got from a friend, called a Swedish Barrel knife. I have been practicing Swedish spoon carving, and was quite thrilled to recieve it. Darn thing is sharp and holds an edge. My previous video is all about this little knife. Thanks for checking in, my friend. Blessings to you guys!
you seem to be the only person on UA-cam who stocks up on firewood as it should be, enough for the whole night with a reserve👍and you have places for firewood👍good
I agree you need plenty of firewood. On this trip I made sure I made camp near a good fuel source. There were a lot of down trees and dead limbs, and fatwood stumps. Thank you for watching!
Nice craftmanship!
Thank you. It works good, too!
Cute doggy and serene snowy scene I enjoyed. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it my friend. Makes me happy! Take care, and have a great week!

My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed!

Great to see the barrel knife at work. Another very enjoyable production. I probably should have waited to watch when I wasn't hungry. Breakfast will come soon enough. I wonder how much snow will pile up this year. Sure looks pretty.
Well dang I should have used the barrel knife to cut steak bites, but we were eating big ol hunks. Sure is a fun piece. I have a feeling we'll get a pile of snow this year. Nothing scientific, but I can feel it coming on. Lots of rut action lately. I'll be sharing some highlights. Thanks for watching my friend. It's always pretty, isn't it?
Your production quality is great.
Much appreciated, Sandberm. Been working on it!
Yup, relaxing is the keyword for this vid. Immersing oneself in nature is Big Medicine. Great way to spend a day. Tig is such a swell dog. What a pal. Thanks for this well done and peaceful video. 🌲
My pleasure, Pinepuppy. That dog always earns her keep, even if it's just for a few smiles. It was great to get out in nature with no electricity or communication. Gave me time to listen to more important stuff. Like the whispering pines and crackling campfire. Big medicine, indeed!
That old classic knife worked perfectly - glad to see old things brought back to life and used again!!!!
Love my new knife, Steve. Not sure if you saw my last video, but it was a gift. It's extremely sharp, and I had to be extra careful with it. Thank you for tuning in my friend!
@ yes I watched you restore it-beautiful work that you did to it!!! I love old nostalgic items like that. God bless and take care.

I think we got more Tig head shakes in this video than ever before! That lunch was gone in a hurry. lol Sure looked like a lot of fun and man that little knife was made to be in your hands (and pocket). Thanks Kevin really enjoyed this one and God bless you.
Howdy Shane! Head shakes for deer steaks! I swear, if it weren't for Tig, UA-cam would shut this channel down. Love this barrel knife my friend. It's near and dear to my heart!
Downright relaxin video Kevin. There’s nothing like God’s creation to soothe the soul. I pray that atmospheric river doesn’t bury you guys in snow. Sounds like some serious wind too. Tig sure is a good companion. Blessings brother!
I agree, Bob. My soul has been soothed clear down to the bone. We dodged the brunt of the storm. Got about 3" of wet snow at the cabin. Some folks didn't fare as well. Blessings to you my friend! Thank you for watching!
That’s a handy Scandi! Love these videos.
Thanks for watching, Eric. It was fun to pull that knife out of my pocket for this trip. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I sure appreciate your encouragement, my friend!
The grandeur of God all around you! What a great dog. I rewatch all your afield videos over and over and dream......
Thanks for your support, Henry. Makes me glad that you enjoy these field trips with Tig. I gave her some extra footage this go round. Darn dog is taking over the channel, and eating all the deer meat! 😁
